What Is in Themselves
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Mim. Ra.
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم المرThese are the signs of the Scripture.
تلك ءايت الكتبAnd what has been sent down to you from your Guardian is the truth,
والذي انزل اليك من ربك الحقbut most people do not believe.
ولكن اكثر الناس لا يومنونGod is the One who raised the heavens without pillars
الله الذي رفع السموت بغير عمدthat you can see;
ترونهاthen He established Himself upon the Edifice;
ثم استوى على العرشand He subjected the sun and the moon,
وسخر الشمس والقمرeach running to an appointed term.
كل يجري لاجل مسمىHe governs the Order,
يدبر الامرHe details the signs, perhaps you will have certainty of the meeting with your Guardian.
يفصل الءايت لعلكم بلقاء ربكم توقنونAnd it is He who spread out the earth, and placed upon it firmly-anchored mountains and rivers;
وهو الذي مد الارض وجعل فيها روسي وانهراand of all the fruits, He placed therein two elements of a pair,
ومن كل الثمرت جعل فيها زوجين اثنينHe covers the day with the night.
يغشي اليل النهارThere are surely in that signs for a people who reflect.
ان في ذلك لءايت لقوم يتفكرونAnd on the earth, there are neighboring plots, gardens of vines, crops, palms clustered or standing alone, watered by the same water,
وفي الارض قطع متجورت وجنت من اعنب وزرع ونخيل صنوان وغير صنوان يسقى بماء وحدand We favor some of them over others in what they yield as food.
ونفضل بعضها على بعض في الاكلThere are surely in that signs for a people who reason.
ان في ذلك لءايت لقوم يعقلونAnd if you marvel, it is marvelous that they say: "Once we are earth, shall we really be in a new creation?"
وان تعجب فعجب قولهم اءذا كنا تربا اءنا لفي خلق جديدThose are the ones who disown their Guardian,
اوليك الذين كفروا بربهمthose are the ones who will have chains around their necks,
واوليك الاغلل في اعناقهمthose are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally.
واوليك اصحب النار هم فيها خلدونThey ask you to hasten evil before good, though there have already come to pass, before them, exemplary precedents.
ويستعجلونك بالسيية قبل الحسنة وقد خلت من قبلهم المثلتAnd your Guardian is surely possessed of forgiveness for the people, despite their injustice;
وان ربك لذو مغفرة للناس على ظلمهمand your Guardian is surely severe in sanction.
وان ربك لشديد العقابAnd those who disown say: "Why has a sign not been sent down upon him from his Guardian?"
ويقول الذين كفروا لولا انزل عليه ءاية من ربهYou are, yourself, only a warner,
انما انت منذرand to every people belongs a guide.
ولكل قوم هادGod knows what every female carries, and what the wombs diminish and what they increase;
الله يعلم ما تحمل كل انثى وما تغيض الارحام وما تزدادand everything, with Him, is according to a measure.
وكل شىء عنده بمقدارThe Knower of what escapes the senses and of what is manifest,
علم الغيب والشهدةthe Great, the Supreme.
الكبير المتعالIt is equal, among you, whether one keeps his word secret or discloses it, and whether he hides in the night or moves openly by day.
سواء منكم من اسر القول ومن جهر به ومن هو مستخف باليل وسارب بالنهارHe has, [placed] before him and behind him, relaying watchers, preserving him by God's command.
له معقبت من بين يديه ومن خلفه يحفظونه من امر اللهGod does not change what is in a people until they change what is in themselves;
ان الله لا يغير ما بقوم حتى يغيروا ما بانفسهمand when God wills harm for a people, nothing can repel it,
واذا اراد الله بقوم سوءا فلا مرد لهand they have, besides Him, no protector.
وما لهم من دونه من والIt is He who shows you the lightning, feared and hoped for, and who raises the heavy clouds; and the thunder glorifies Him in praise, as do the Agents, out of fear of Him;
هو الذي يريكم البرق خوفا وطمعا وينشي السحاب الثقال ويسبح الرعد بحمده والمليكة من خيفتهand He sends the thunderbolt, and strikes with it whom He wills, while they argue about God; and He is of a formidable rigor.
ويرسل الصوعق فيصيب بها من يشاء وهم يجدلون في الله وهو شديد المحالTo Him belongs the call of truth;
له دعوة الحقand those they invoke besides Him respond to them in nothing, except like one who stretches out his palms toward water so that it may reach his mouth, never reaching it.
والذين يدعون من دونه لا يستجيبون لهم بشىء الا كبسط كفيه الى الماء ليبلغ فاه وما هو ببلغهThe invocation of those who disown is nothing but in error.
وما دعاء الكفرين الا في ضللAnd before God prostrates whoever is in the heavens and on the earth, willingly or unwillingly, as do their shadows, morning and evening.
ولله يسجد من في السموت والارض طوعا وكرها وظللهم بالغدو والءاصالSay: "Who is the Guardian of the heavens and the earth?" Say: "God."
قل من رب السموت والارض قل اللهSay: "Have you then taken, besides Him, allies who hold for themselves neither profit nor harm?"
قل افاتخذتم من دونه اولياء لا يملكون لانفسهم نفعا ولا ضراSay: "Are the blind and the seeing equal?"
قل هل يستوي الاعمى والبصيرOr are the darknesses and the light equal?
ام هل تستوي الظلمت والنورOr have they assigned to God associates who created as He creates, such that creation seems alike to them?
ام جعلوا لله شركاء خلقوا كخلقه فتشبه الخلق عليهمSay: "God is the Creator of everything,
قل الله خلق كل شىءand He is the One, the Subjugator."
وهو الوحد القهرHe has sent down from the sky a water, and valleys began to flow according to their measure, and the torrent carried a swollen froth;
انزل من السماء ماء فسالت اودية بقدرها فاحتمل السيل زبدا رابياand of what is heated in the fire, seeking an ornament or a use, there is likewise a froth.
ومما يوقدون عليه في النار ابتغاء حلية او متع زبد مثلهThus does God multiply truth and falsehood:
كذلك يضرب الله الحق والبطلthe froth goes off as scum,
فاما الزبد فيذهب جفاءwhile what is useful to people remains on the earth.
واما ما ينفع الناس فيمكث في الارضThus God multiplies the examples.
كذلك يضرب الله الامثالTo those who respond to their Guardian belongs the best;
للذين استجابوا لربهم الحسنىand those who do not respond to Him, if they possessed all that is on the earth, and its equivalent besides, they would give it as ransom.
والذين لم يستجيبوا له لو ان لهم ما في الارض جميعا ومثله معه لافتدوا بهThose are the ones who will have the worst of reckonings,
اوليك لهم سوء الحسابand their refuge will be Jahannam:
وماوىهم جهنمwhat an evil bed!
وبيس المهادIs he who knows that what has been sent down to you from your Guardian is the truth then like one who is blind?
افمن يعلم انما انزل اليك من ربك الحق كمن هو اعمىOnly the possessors of intelligence remember, those who keep God's covenant and do not break the solemn engagement, those who join what God has commanded to be joined, dread their Guardian and fear the worst of reckonings, those who were patient seeking the direction of their Guardian, maintained the Contact, spent from what We provided them, secretly and openly, and repel evil with good.
انما يتذكر اولوا الالبب الذين يوفون بعهد الله ولا ينقضون الميثق والذين يصلون ما امر الله به ان يوصل ويخشون ربهم ويخافون سوء الحساب والذين صبروا ابتغاء وجه ربهم واقاموا الصلوة وانفقوا مما رزقنهم سرا وعلانية ويدرءون بالحسنة السييةThose are the ones who will have the outcome of the Abode:
اوليك لهم عقبى الدارthe Gardens of permanent abode, which they will enter, along with those who were righteous among their ancestors, their spouses, and their descendants,
جنت عدن يدخلونها ومن صلح من ءابايهم وازوجهم وذريتهمand the Agents will enter upon them through every gate:
والمليكة يدخلون عليهم من كل باب"Peace be upon you, for what you were patient in!"
سلم عليكم بما صبرتمWhat an excellent outcome of the Abode!
فنعم عقبى الدارAnd those who break God's covenant after the solemn engagement that binds it, sever what God has commanded to be joined, and spread corruption on the earth — those are the ones to whom belongs the curse, and to whom belongs the worst of abodes.
والذين ينقضون عهد الله من بعد ميثقه ويقطعون ما امر الله به ان يوصل ويفسدون في الارض اوليك لهم اللعنة ولهم سوء الدارGod extends provision to whom He wills, and He measures it:
الله يبسط الرزق لمن يشاء ويقدرand they rejoice in the present life,
وفرحوا بالحيوة الدنياwhile the present life, compared to the last life, is only a fleeting enjoyment.
وما الحيوة الدنيا في الءاخرة الا متعAnd those who disown say: "Why has a sign not been sent down upon him from his Guardian?"
ويقول الذين كفروا لولا انزل عليه ءاية من ربهSay: "God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides to Himself whoever turns back to Him,
قل ان الله يضل من يشاء ويهدي اليه من انابthose who believe and whose cores find peace in the remembrance of God.
الذين ءامنوا وتطمين قلوبهم بذكر اللهIs it not in the remembrance of God that the cores find peace?"
الا بذكر الله تطمين القلوبThose who have believed and done righteous deeds — what felicity for them, and what a fine place of return!
الذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت طوبى لهم وحسن مابThus We have sent you within a community before which other communities have already passed, so that you may recite to them what We have revealed to you, while they disown the All-Benevolent.
كذلك ارسلنك في امة قد خلت من قبلها امم لتتلوا عليهم الذي اوحينا اليك وهم يكفرون بالرحمنSay: "He is my Guardian;
قل هو ربيthere is no deity but Him;
لا اله الا هوupon Him I rely, and to Him goes my repentance."
عليه توكلت واليه متابAnd even if a Recitation caused the mountains to move by it, or split the earth by it, or made the dead speak by it [they would not believe].
ولو ان قرءانا سيرت به الجبال او قطعت به الارض او كلم به الموتىBut to God belongs the command, entirely:
بل لله الامر جميعاhave those who believe not yet understood that, if God willed, He would guide all the people?
افلم يايس الذين ءامنوا ان لو يشاء الله لهدى الناس جميعاAnd those who disown will not cease to be struck, for what they have fabricated, by a sudden calamity, or [that calamity] will alight near their abode, until God's promise comes:
ولا يزال الذين كفروا تصيبهم بما صنعوا قارعة او تحل قريبا من دارهم حتى ياتي وعد اللهGod indeed does not fail His promise.
ان الله لا يخلف الميعادAnd messengers before you were indeed mocked; I then granted a delay to those who disowned, then I seized them:
ولقد استهزي برسل من قبلك فامليت للذين كفروا ثم اخذتهمand what then was My sanction?
فكيف كان عقابIs He who watches over every Self, according to what it has earned, [like another]?
افمن هو قايم على كل نفس بما كسبتAnd they have assigned associates to God: say: "Name them!
وجعلوا لله شركاء قل سموهمWill you inform Him of what He does not know on the earth, or is this only a word in appearance?"
ام تنبونه بما لا يعلم في الارض ام بظهر من القولIt is nothing of the sort: their plot has been made to appear pleasing to those who disown, and they have been turned away from the path.
بل زين للذين كفروا مكرهم وصدوا عن السبيلAnd whoever God lets go astray has no guide left.
ومن يضلل الله فما له من هادThere is for them a punishment in the present life,
لهم عذاب في الحيوة الدنياbut the punishment of the last life is even more grievous,
ولعذاب الءاخرة اشقand they have, against God, no defender.
وما لهم من الله من واقThe example of the Garden promised to those who guard themselves: rivers flow beneath it, its food is constant, as is its shade —
مثل الجنة التي وعد المتقون تجري من تحتها الانهر اكلها دايم وظلهاsuch is the outcome of those who guarded themselves,
تلك عقبى الذين اتقواwhile the outcome of those who disown is the Fire.
وعقبى الكفرين النارAnd those to whom We gave the Scripture rejoice at what has been sent down to you,
والذين ءاتينهم الكتب يفرحون بما انزل اليكbut there are, among the parties, those who disavow part of it.
ومن الاحزاب من ينكر بعضهSay: "I have only been commanded to obey God, and to associate nothing with Him:
قل انما امرت ان اعبد الله ولا اشرك بهit is to Him that I call,
اليه ادعواand to Him is my return."
واليه مابAnd thus We have sent it down, as a flawless judgment:
وكذلك انزلنه حكما عربياand if you followed their emotions after knowledge has come to you, you would have, against God, neither protector nor defender.
ولين اتبعت اهواءهم بعدما جاءك من العلم ما لك من الله من ولي ولا واقWe have indeed sent messengers before you, and given them spouses and progeny;
ولقد ارسلنا رسلا من قبلك وجعلنا لهم ازوجا وذريةand it was not for any messenger to bring a sign, except with God's permission.
وما كان لرسول ان ياتي باية الا باذن اللهTo every term belongs a register.
لكل اجل كتابGod effaces what He wills, and He affirms,
يمحوا الله ما يشاء ويثبتand with Him is the Source of the Scripture.
وعنده ام الكتبWhether We show you a part of what We promise them, or whether We call you back to Us, only the transmission is incumbent upon you, and the reckoning belongs to Us.
وان ما نرينك بعض الذي نعدهم او نتوفينك فانما عليك البلغ وعلينا الحسابHave they not seen that We come to the earth, reducing it from its extremities?
اولم يروا انا ناتي الارض ننقصها من اطرافهاGod judges, and none can revise His judgment:
والله يحكم لا معقب لحكمهHe is swift in reckoning.
وهو سريع الحسابThose before them indeed plotted, but to God belongs the whole plot:
وقد مكر الذين من قبلهم فلله المكر جميعاHe knows what every Self earns,
يعلم ما تكسب كل نفسand those who disown will soon know to whom belongs the outcome of the Abode.
وسيعلم الكفر لمن عقبى الدارAnd those who disown say: "You are not sent."
ويقول الذين كفروا لست مرسلاSay: "God suffices as witness between me and you, and whoever holds the knowledge of the Scripture."
قل كفى بالله شهيدا بيني وبينكم ومن عنده علم الكتب
