۞

Al-Isra

  • In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Exalted is He who made His obedient one travel by night, from the Forbidden Sanctuary to the farthest sanctuary, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him some of Our signs.i 1
  • Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. 1
  • And We gave Moussa the Scripture, and made it a guidance for the Children of Israel: "Take no one, besides Me, as an agent" — progeny of those We carried with Nuh.i 3
  • He was indeed a grateful the obedient one.i 3
  • And We decreed to the Children of Israel, in the Scripture: "You will surely spread corruption on the earth twice, and you will surely rise to an immense arrogance."i 4
  • When the promise of the first of these two came, We raised up against you obedient ones of Ours, possessed of severe rigor, who ranged through the dwellings in every direction —i 5
  • and it was a fulfilled promise. 5
  • Then We gave you back the upper hand over them, and supported you with wealth and children, and made you more numerous in ranks. 6
  • If you do well, you do well for yourselves, 7
  • and if you do ill, it is against yourselves. 7
  • Then, when the promise of the second time came, [We raised up servants] to afflict your faces, to enter the Sanctuary as they had entered it the first time, and to utterly destroy whatever they seized.i 7
  • It may be that your Guardian will show you benevolence; 8
  • but if you revert, We will revert. 8
  • And We have made Jahannam, for those who deny, an enclosure.i 8
  • This Recitation guides to what is most upright, and gives the believers who do righteous deeds the glad tidings that they will have a great reward, and that those who do not believe in the last life — We have prepared for them a painful punishment.i 10
  • The human being calls for evil with the same haste with which he calls for good, 11
  • for the human being is hasty. 11
  • We have made the night and the day two signs; We effaced the sign of the night and made the sign of the day a time of clarity, so that you might seek a favor from your Guardian and know the count of years and reckoning. 12
  • And everything, We have set out in detail. 12
  • And to every human being We have fastened his own omen to his neck; and We shall bring forth for him, on the Day of Appearance, a register which he will find laid open:i 13
  • "Read your register: today, it suffices that you be your own accountant."i 14
  • Whoever lets himself be guided is guided only for himself, 15
  • and whoever goes astray does so only against himself. 15
  • No burdened Self will bear the burden of another.i 15
  • And We never punish until We have raised up a messenger. 15
  • And when We wish to destroy a city, We command its privileged ones [to reform], but they overstep within it; so the word comes true against it, and We destroy it utterly.i 16
  • How many generations have We destroyed after Nuh!i 17
  • Your Guardian suffices, to know the wrongs of His servants, as Informed and Seeing. 17
  • Whoever wants the hasty [life], We hasten for him in it what We will, to whom We will; then We assign him Jahannam, where he will burn, blamed, driven away. 18
  • And whoever wants the last [life] and strives for it with the effort it deserves, while being a believer — those are the ones whose effort will be acknowledged. 19
  • To all, We grant — 20
  • to these as to those — from your Guardian's gift, 20
  • and your Guardian's gift is never restricted. 20
  • See how We have favored some over others; 21
  • and the last life is indeed greater in degrees, and greater in preference. 21
  • Do not place, alongside God, another deity, or you would find yourself blamed, abandoned. 22
  • Your Guardian has decreed that you obey none but Him, 23
  • and kindness toward one's two parents. 23
  • If either of them, or both, reach old age with you, do not say to them "ugh!" and do not rebuke them, 23
  • but speak to them a noble word. 23
  • And lower for them the wing of humility, out of tenderness, 24
  • and say: "My Guardian, have benevolence on them as they raised me when I was small." 24
  • Your Guardian knows best what is in your Self.i 25
  • If you are righteous, He is, toward those who turn back to Him, most forgiving. 25
  • And give to the close relative his due, and to the destitute and the traveler on the road,i 26
  • and do not squander wastefully. 26
  • Those who squander are the brothers of the Diverters,i 27
  • and the Diverter is, toward his Guardian, a great denier.i 27
  • And if you must turn away from them, seeking a benevolence from your Guardian that you hope for, then speak to them an easy word. 28
  • Do not keep your hand chained to your neck, nor stretch it out completely, or you would find yourself blamed, overwhelmed with regret. 29
  • Your Guardian extends provision to whom He wills, and He measures it; 30
  • He is, toward His obedient ones, Informed and Seeing. 30
  • Do not kill your children for fear of poverty:i 31
  • it is We who provide for them, as for you. 31
  • Killing them is indeed a great fault. 31
  • Do not approach fornication: it is an indecency, and what a detestable path!i 32
  • And do not kill the Self which God has made sacred, except in truth.i 33
  • Whoever is killed unjustly, We have granted the legal authority [in charge] an authority; but let him not exceed the bound in taking life,i 33
  • for he will be helped. 33
  • Do not approach the orphan's wealth, except in the best manner, until he reaches his full maturity, 34
  • and keep the covenant, 34
  • for the covenant will be questioned. 34
  • Give full measure when you measure, and weigh with the straight balance: 35
  • that is better, and finer in outcome. 35
  • Do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge: 36
  • hearing, sight, and the Conscience — of all that, account will be asked.i 36
  • And do not walk upon the earth with insolence: 37
  • you will never split the earth, nor reach the mountains in height. 37
  • All that, its evil is, with your Guardian, detestable. 38
  • That is what your Guardian has revealed to you of wisdom.i 39
  • Do not place, alongside God, another deity, or you would be cast into Jahannam, blamed, driven away. 39
  • Has your Guardian then favored you with sons, and taken, among the Agents, daughters?i 40
  • You are indeed uttering an enormous word. 40
  • We have indeed diversified, in this Recitation, [Our words] so that they might remember; but it only increases their aversion. 41
  • Say: "If there were, with Him, deities, as you say, they would then have sought a way to the Holder of the Edifice."i 42
  • Glory be to Him, and He is exalted, above what they say, in immense exaltation.i 43
  • The seven heavens glorify Him, as does the earth and those within it;i 44
  • there is nothing that does not glorify Him in praise, 44
  • but you do not understand their glorification. 44
  • He is thoughtful, most forgiving.i 44
  • And when you recite the Recitation, We place between you and those who do not believe in the last life a hidden veil,i 45
  • and We place over their Cores veils, [preventing them] from understanding it, and in their ears a deafness.i 46
  • And when you mention your Guardian in the Recitation, Him alone, they turn their backs in aversion.i 46
  • We know best what they listen for, when they listen to you, and when they are in private converse, when the wrongdoers say: "You follow none but a man abused by illusion."i 47
  • See how they have multiplied examples against you, and so gone astray:i 48
  • so they cannot find a way. 48
  • And they said: "When we are bones and fragments, shall we really be raised in a new creation?" 49
  • Say: "Be stone, or iron, or any creation that looms great in your minds,i 51
  • They will then say: 'Who will bring us back?' 51
  • Say: 'He who fashioned you the first time.' 51
  • Then they will shake their heads at you and say: 'When will that be?' 51
  • Say: 'It may well be near. 51
  • The Day He calls you, you will respond in praise of Him, and you will think you had stayed only a little [while]." 52
  • And tell My obedient ones to say what is best: 53
  • the Diverter sows discord among them;i 53
  • the Diverter is, to the human being, a declared enemy.i 53
  • Your Guardian knows you best; if He wills, He shows you benevolence, and if He wills, He punishes you. 54
  • We have not sent you to be their agent.i 54
  • Your Guardian knows best those who are in the heavens and the earth. 55
  • We have indeed favored some prophets over others, and We gave Dawud the Formulary.i 55
  • Say: "Invoke those you claim [to be divine] besides Him: they have no power to remove harm from you, nor to divert it." 56
  • Those very ones they invoke seek, toward their Guardian, the means of approach — whichever of them is nearest — and hope for His benevolence and fear His punishment,i 57
  • for your Guardian's punishment is indeed to be feared. 57
  • There is not a city but We shall destroy it before the Day of Appearance, or punish it with a severe punishment:i 58
  • that is inscribed in the register.i 58
  • Nothing has kept Us from sending the signs, except that the former peoples denied them. 59
  • We gave the Depleters [Thamud] the she-camel, as clear evidence, but they wronged her. 59
  • And We send the signs only as a warning. 59
  • And [recall] when We told you that your Guardian encompasses the people [in His knowledge] — 60
  • We made the vision that We showed you only a trial for the people, as also the cursed tree in this Recitation.i 60
  • And We warn them, but it only increases their immense excess. 60
  • And [recall] when We said to the Agents: "Prostrate before Adam," they prostrated,i 61
  • except the Despairing One [Iblis]: he said: "Shall I prostrate before one You created from clay?"i 61
  • He said: "Do You see this one You have honored above me? If You give me respite until the Day of Appearance, I shall surely seize his progeny, except a few."i 62
  • He said: "Go! Whoever among them follows you — Jahannam will be your recompense, an abundant recompense.i 63
  • Rouse, by your voice, whomever you can among them; rally against them your cavalry and your infantry; share with them in wealth and children; and make them promises — 64
  • but the Diverter promises them nothing but delusion.i 64
  • Over My obedient ones, you have no authority; 65
  • and your Guardian suffices as agent."i 65
  • Your Guardian is the One who makes the vessel glide for you on the sea, so that you may seek His favor. 66
  • He is, toward you, full of benevolence. 66
  • And when harm touches you at sea, those you invoke abandon you, except Him. 67
  • Then, when He saves you to dry land, you turn away: 67
  • the human being is a great denier.i 67
  • Are you then sure He will not cause a part of the dry land to swallow you, or send upon you a shower of stones, leaving you then to find no agent? Or are you sure He will not bring you back into it another time, to send upon you a shattering wind that drowns you, for your denial, leaving you then to find no one to pursue Us on your behalf?i 69
  • We have indeed honored the sons of Adam, carried them on land and sea, provided them with good things, and preferred them, in preference, over many of those We have created.i 70
  • The Day We call every group of people with their reference,i 71
  • whoever is given his register in his right hand — those will read their register, and not be wronged a hair's breadth.i 71
  • And whoever is blind in this [life] will be blind in the last life, and further astray in path. 72
  • They have indeed nearly tried you, [to turn you away] from what We revealed to you, so that you might invent against Us something else; 73
  • and then, they would have taken you as an intimate friend.i 73
  • And had We not made you firm, you would well nigh have inclined toward them, a little. 74
  • We would then have made you taste double [the punishment] of life and double [the punishment] of death; then you would have found, against Us, no helper. 75
  • They have indeed nearly shaken you out of this land, to drive you out of it — 76
  • and then, they would not have remained after you, except a little.i 76
  • Such is the constant rule concerning those We sent before you among Our messengers, 77
  • and you will find no change to Our rule. 77
  • Maintain the Contact from the sun's decline until the darkness of night, and the Recitation of dawn:i 78
  • the recitation of dawn is indeed witnessed. 78
  • And for part of the night, keep vigil with it, as an addition for you: it may be that your Guardian will raise you to a praised station. 79
  • And say: "My Guardian, cause me to enter by an entrance of truth, and cause me to exit by an exit of truth, and grant me, from Yourself, a supporting authority." 80
  • And say: "The truth has come, and falsehood has vanished: 81
  • falsehood is bound to vanish." 81
  • And We send down, from this Recitation, that which is healing and benevolence for the believers,i 82
  • but it only increases the wrongdoers in loss. 82
  • And when We favor the human being with blessings, he turns away and withdraws to his side; 83
  • and when harm touches him, he is despairing.i 83
  • Say: "Each one acts according to his own manner; your Guardian knows best who is best guided in path."i 84
  • And they ask you about the Influx.i 85
  • Say: "The Influx is of my Guardian's affair; and you have been given of knowledge only a little." 85
  • And if We willed, We would surely take away what We have revealed to you; then you would find, against Us, no agent for it — except a benevolence from your Guardian.i 87
  • His favor toward you is indeed immense. 87
  • Say: "If humans and the Occulted united to produce the equal of this Recitation, they would not produce its equal, even were they mutual support to one another."i 88
  • We have indeed diversified for the people, in this Recitation, every kind of example; but most people persisted in nothing but denial.i 89
  • And they said: "We will not believe in you until you make a spring gush forth for us from the earth, or you have a garden of palm trees and vines in which you make rivers gush forth abundantly, or you make the sky fall upon us in pieces as you claim, or you bring God and the Agents before us, or you have a house of ornament, or you ascend to the sky — and we will not believe even in your ascent until you bring down upon us a register we can read."i 93
  • Say: "Exalted is my Guardian! Am I anything but a human being, a messenger?"i 93
  • And nothing kept the people from believing, when guidance came to them, except that they said: "Would God have sent a human being as a messenger?" 94
  • Say: "Had there been on earth Agents walking about in tranquility, We would have sent down to them, from the sky, an Agent, as messenger."i 95
  • Say: "God suffices as witness between me and you: 96
  • He is, toward His obedient ones, Informed and Seeing." 96
  • Whoever God guides, he is the rightly guided, 97
  • and whoever He lets go astray, you will never find for them allies besides Him. 97
  • And We shall gather them, on the Day of Appearance, upon their faces, blind, dumb, and deaf:i 97
  • their refuge will be Jahannam: 97
  • every time it dies down, We revive for them the blaze.i 97
  • That is their reward, for having denied Our signs and said: "When we are bones and fragments, shall we really be raised in a new creation?" 98
  • Have they not seen that God, who created the heavens and the earth, is able to create their like, and that He has appointed for them a term about which there is no doubt? 99
