Maryam

  • In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Kâf. Hâ. Yâ. ʿAyn. Sâd.i 1
  • A remembrance of your Guardian's benevolence toward His obedient one Zakariya, when he called upon his Guardian with a secret call,i 3
  • he said: "My Guardian, the bone has grown weak within me, the head has blazed white, and never, in calling upon You, my Guardian, have I been left wanting. 4
  • I have feared for my kin after me, and my wife is barren. So grant me, from Yourself, an heir who will inherit from me and inherit from the line of Yaacoub,i 6
  • and make him, my Guardian, pleasing [to You]." 6
  • "O Zakariya, We give you glad tidings of a boy: his name is Yahya, to whom We have given, before him, no one sharing this attribute."i 7
  • He said: "My Guardian, how shall I have a boy, when my wife is barren and I have reached, in old age, utter decrepitude?"i 8
  • He said: "So it will be. Your Guardian has said: That is easy for Me, and I created you before, when you were nothing." 9
  • He said: "My Guardian, appoint for me a sign." 10
  • He said: "Your sign is that you shall not speak to the people for three complete nights."i 10
  • He came out to his people, from the oratory, and signaled to them: "Glorify [Him] at morning and evening."i 11
  • "O Yahya, take the Scripture with strength."i 12
  • And We gave him judgment, while he was a child,i 12
  • and a tenderness from Us, and a purity;i 13
  • and he guarded himself.i 13
  • Dutiful toward his parents, he was neither tyrannical nor rebellious.i 14
  • And peace be upon him the day he was born, the day he dies, and the day he is raised alive.i 15
  • And mention, in the Scripture, Maryam, when she withdrew from her people to a place toward the east and took, apart from them, a screen of seclusion.i 17
  • So We sent to her Our Influx, who took before her the form of a well-formed human being.i 17
  • She said: "I take refuge from you with the All-Benevolent! If you guard yourself [before Him]…" 18
  • He said: "I am only the messenger of your Guardian, [come] to grant you a pure boy."i 19
  • She said: "How shall I have a boy, when no human has touched me and I have not been unchaste?"i 20
  • He said: "So it will be. Your Guardian has said: That is easy for Me. 21
  • And We shall make him a sign for the people and a benevolence from Us. 21
  • It is a matter already decreed." 21
  • She conceived him, then withdrew with him to a far-off place.i 22
  • The pangs of childbirth drove her to the trunk of the palm tree. She said: "Would that I had died before this, and been a thing forgotten, utterly forgotten!"i 23
  • He called to her from below her: "Do not grieve! Your Guardian has set beneath you a couch.i 24
  • And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree: it will drop upon you fresh, ripe dates.i 25
  • So eat, drink, and let your eye find rest.i 26
  • If you see anyone among the humans, say: "I have vowed to the All-Benevolent a silence; so I shall not speak today to any human."i 26
  • Then she came with him to her people, carrying him. 27
  • They said: "O Maryam, you have done a monstrous thing!i 27
  • O sister of Harun, your father was not a man of evil, nor your mother unchaste."i 28
  • So she pointed to him. 29
  • They said: "How shall we speak to one who is a child in the cradle?"i 29
  • The child said: "I am the servant of God. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet; He has made me blessed wherever I may be, and enjoined upon me the Contact and the purifying alms as long as I live, and dutifulness toward my mother.i 32
  • He has not made me tyrannical or wretched. 32
  • And peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I am raised alive." 33
  • Such is Issa, son of Maryam —i 34
  • the word of truth, about which they are in doubt.i 34
  • It is not for God to take a child.i 35
  • Immaculate is He! 35
  • When He decrees a matter, He only says to it: "Be," 35
  • and it is. 35
  • God is my Guardian and your Guardian: so obey Him. 36
  • This is a straight path. 36
  • But the factions diverged among themselves.i 37
  • So woe to those who deny, at the appearing of an immense Day!i 37
  • How well they will hear and see, the Day they come to Us! 38
  • Yet the wrongdoers, today, are in manifest error. 38
  • And warn them of the Day of Regret, when the matter is decided, while they are heedless and do not believe.i 39
  • It is We who will inherit the earth and all who are upon it, 40
  • and to Us they will be returned. 40
  • And mention, in the Scripture, Ibrahim: he was a man of truth, a prophet, when he said to his father: "O my father, why do you obey what neither hears nor sees and avails you nothing?i 42
  • O my father, there has come to me of knowledge what has not come to you; so follow me, I will guide you to an even path. 43
  • O my father, do not obey the Diverter:i 44
  • the Diverter is rebellious toward the All-Benevolent.i 44
  • O my father, I fear that a punishment from the All-Benevolent will touch you, and you become an ally of the Diverter."i 45
  • [His father] said: "Do you spurn my gods, O Ibrahim?i 46
  • If you do not desist, I will banish you! Keep away from me for a long time."i 46
  • [Ibrahim] said: "Peace be upon you. I will ask my Guardian's forgiveness for you: He has ever been gracious to me. I withdraw from you and from what you invoke besides God, and I invoke my Guardian; perhaps, in invoking my Guardian, I shall not be left wanting."i 48
  • When he had withdrawn from them and from what they obeyed besides God, We granted him Ishaq and Yaacoub,i 49
  • and each We made a prophet. 49
  • And We granted them [a share] of Our benevolence, and gave them a lofty renown of truth.i 50
  • And mention, in the Scripture, Moussa: he was wholly devoted, and he was a messenger, a prophet.i 51
  • We called him from the right side of the Mount, and drew him near in confidence.i 52
  • And We granted him, out of Our benevolence, his brother Harun, a prophet.i 53
  • And mention, in the Scripture, Ismail: he was true to his promise, and he was a messenger, a prophet. He would enjoin upon his people the Contact and the purifying alms,i 55
  • and he was, with his Guardian, well-pleasing. 55
  • And mention, in the Scripture, Idris: he was a man of truth, a prophet.i 56
  • And We raised him to a lofty station. 57
  • Those are the ones God has favored among the prophets: of the progeny of Adam, of those We carried with Nuh, of the progeny of Ibrahim and of Israel, and of those We guided and chose.i 58
  • When the signs of the All-Benevolent were recited to them, they fell down prostrate, weeping.i 58
  • Then there succeeded them a generation who neglected the Contact and followed desires: so they will meet with error — except one who repents, believes, and acts righteously; those will enter the Garden and be wronged in nothing: the Gardens of Eden which the All-Benevolent has promised His obedient ones, in what escapes their presence.i 61
  • His promise is surely to be fulfilled. 61
  • They will hear in it no idle talk, 62
  • only: "Peace!" 62
  • And they will have their provision there, morning and evening.i 62
  • Such is the Garden that We shall give as inheritance, among Our obedient ones, to whoever guarded himself. 63
  • "We do not descend except by the command of your Guardian. 64
  • To Him belongs what is before us, what is behind us, and what is between that. 64
  • And your Guardian is never forgetful." 64
  • The Guardian of the heavens, the earth, and what is between them: so obey Him, and be steadfast in His service.i 65
  • Do you know anyone who shares His attribute?i 65
  • And man says: "When I am dead, shall I really be brought forth alive?" 66
  • Does man not remember that We created him before, when he was nothing? 67
  • By your Guardian, We will surely gather them, along with the Diverters; then We will bring them, on their knees, around Jahannam.i 68
  • Then We will pluck out, from every faction, those most insolent toward the All-Benevolent.i 69
  • Then it is We who know best who most deserves to burn in it.i 70
  • There is none of you but will come to it: that is, for your Guardian, an irrevocable decree.i 71
  • Then We will save those who guarded themselves, and leave the wrongdoers in it, on their knees. 72
  • And when Our clear signs are recited to them, those who deny say to those who believe: "Which of the two parties has the better standing and the finer assembly?"i 73
  • How many a generation before them We have destroyed, finer in possessions and in appearance!i 74
  • Say: "Whoever is in error, let the All-Benevolent extend for him a long respite!" 75
  • until, seeing what they are promised — either the punishment or the Hour — they know who is worse in station and weaker in support.i 75
  • And God increases in guidance those who let themselves be guided. 76
  • And the enduring, righteous deeds are, with your Guardian, better in reward and better in outcome.i 76
  • Have you seen the one who denied Our signs and said: "I will surely be given wealth and children"? Has he pierced what escapes his presence, or taken a pact with the All-Benevolent? By no means!i 79
  • We will record what he says and extend for him the punishment, at length. 79
  • And We will inherit what he speaks of, and he will come to Us, alone.i 80
  • They have taken, besides God, gods, that they might be a might for them. By no means!i 82
  • They will deny their obey and stand against them as adversaries.i 82
  • Do you not see that We have loosed the Diverters upon those who deny, inciting them relentlessly?i 83
  • So do not be hasty against them: 84
  • We are only counting out for them [their days], count by count. 84
  • The Day We gather those who guarded themselves to the All-Benevolent, as a delegation, and drive the severed to Jahannam, like a herd to the watering-place.i 86
  • They will hold no intercession, except one who has taken a pact with the All-Benevolent.i 87
  • And they have said: "The All-Benevolent has taken a child." 88
  • You have put forth a monstrous thing! The heavens nearly rupture from it, the earth splits open, and the mountains collapse in ruin — that they have ascribed a child to the All-Benevolent.i 91
  • It does not befit the All-Benevolent to take a child. 92
  • There is none in the heavens and the earth but comes to the All-Benevolent as a the obedient one. 93
  • He has enumerated them and counted them, one by one. 94
  • And each of them will come to Him, on the Day of Appearance, alone.i 95
  • To those who believe and do righteous deeds, the All-Benevolent will grant affection.i 96
  • We have made it easy on your tongue only so that you may give glad tidings by it to those who guard themselves and warn by it a contentious people.i 97
  • How many a generation before them We have destroyed! Do you perceive a single one of them, or hear from them the faintest murmur?i 98
