Guidance for Those Who Guard Themselves
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Mim.
This is the Scripture: no doubt possible,
ذلك الكتب لا ريبguidance for those who guard themselves, who believe in God even though He escapes their senses, maintain the Contact, and spend from what We have provided them as sustenance,
فيه هدى للمتقين الذين يومنون بالغيب ويقيمون الصلوة ومما رزقنهم ينفقونand those who believe in what has been revealed to you and in what was revealed before you, and who possess certainty of the last life — those are the ones who are upon guidance from their Guardian,
والذين يومنون بما انزل اليك وما انزل من قبلك وبالءاخرة هم يوقنون اوليك على هدى من ربهمand those are the ones who succeed.
Those who disown, it is the same to them whether you warn them or not: they do not believe.
God has sealed their cores and their hearing,
ختم الله على قلوبهم وعلى سمعهمand over their sights, a veil;
وعلى ابصرهم غشوةand they will have an immense punishment.
And among the people, there are some who say: "We believe in God and the Last Day", when they are not believers.
They seek to deceive God and those who have believed,
يخدعون الله والذين ءامنواbut they deceive none but themselves, without perceiving it.
There is, in their cores, a sickness,
في قلوبهم مرضand God has increased them in sickness;
فزادهم الله مرضاand they will have a painful punishment, for having lied.
And when it is said to them: "Do not sow corruption on the earth", they say: "We are only setting things right."
Is it not rather they who are the sowers of corruption? But they do not perceive it.
And when it is said to them: "Believe as the people have believed", they say: "Should we believe as the fools have believed?"
Is it not rather they who are the fools? But they do not know.
الا انهم هم السفهاء ولكن لا يعلمونAnd when they meet those who have believed, they say: "We have believed";
واذا لقوا الذين ءامنوا قالوا ءامناand when they are alone with their diverters, they say: "We are with you, we are only mocking."
God mocks them, and lets them prolong their blind wandering in their excess.
Those are the ones who bought error at the price of guidance; their trade did not, then, profit, and they did not let themselves be guided.
Their likeness is that of one who kindles a fire; when it has illuminated what is around him,
God takes away their light and leaves them in darknesses where they no longer see.
Deaf, mute, blind, they do not, then, turn back [on their way].
Or like a torrential rain from the sky, in which there are darknesses, thunder, and lightning:
او كصيب من السماء فيه ظلمت ورعد وبرقthey put their fingers in their ears, because of the thunderclaps, out of fear of death.
God encompasses perfectly those who disown.
The lightning almost snatches away their sight.
يكاد البرق يخطف ابصرهمEvery time it lights up for them, they walk on;
كلما اضاء لهم مشوا فيهand when it darkens over them, they stand still.
And had God willed, He would certainly have taken away their hearing and their sight.
God is indeed capable of all things.
O mankind! obey your Guardian, who created you and those before you, perhaps you will guard yourselves,
He who made for you the earth a bed, and the sky a structure, and who sent down from the sky water, by which He brought forth fruits as sustenance for you.
So do not attribute to God equals, while you know.
And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our obedient one, bring, then, a surah like it,
وان كنتم في ريب مما نزلنا على عبدنا فاتوا بسورة من مثلهand call your witnesses, besides God, if you are truthful.
If you do not do it — and you will never do it — guard yourselves, then, against the Fire, whose fuel is people and stones,
فان لم تفعلوا ولن تفعلوا فاتقوا النار التي وقودها الناس والحجارةprepared for those who disown.
And announce to those who have believed and done righteous deeds that they will have gardens beneath which rivers flow.
وبشر الذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت ان لهم جنت تجري من تحتها الانهرEvery time they receive a fruit therein as sustenance, they say: "This is what we were given as sustenance before";
كلما رزقوا منها من ثمرة رزقا قالوا هذا الذي رزقنا من قبلand it is given to them, resembling [what they knew].
They will have therein purified spouses,
ولهم فيها ازوج مطهرةand they will abide therein eternally.
God is indeed not ashamed to multiply an image, be it that of a gnat or something greater.
ان الله لا يستحي ان يضرب مثلا ما بعوضة فما فوقهاThose who have believed then know that it is the truth from their Guardian;
فاما الذين ءامنوا فيعلمون انه الحق من ربهمand as for those who disown, they say: "What did God intend by this image?"
واما الذين كفروا فيقولون ماذا اراد الله بهذا مثلاHe leads astray by it many, and guides by it many;
يضل به كثيرا ويهدي به كثيراand He leads astray by it only the oversteppers, those who break the engagement of God after the solemn engagement that binds it, sever what God ordered to be joined, and sow corruption on the earth.
Those are the losers.
How can you disown God, when you were dead and He gave you life; then He will cause you to die,
كيف تكفرون بالله وكنتم اموتا فاحيكم ثم يميتكمthen He will bring you back to life, then it is to Him that you will be returned?
It is He who created for you all that is on the earth,
هو الذي خلق لكم ما في الارض جميعاthen He established Himself toward the sky, and made of it seven heavens harmoniously arranged;
ثم استوى الى السماء فسوىهن سبع سموتand He is All-Knowing of all things.
And remember when your Guardian said to the Agents: "I am going to establish a successor on the earth."
They said: "Will You establish therein one who will sow corruption in it and shed blood, while we celebrate Your praise, glorifying You, and proclaim Your holiness?"
He said: "I know what you do not know."
And He taught Adam all the attributes, then He presented them to the Agents, and said: "Inform Me of the attributes of these, if you are truthful."
They said: "Glory be to You! we have no knowledge except what You have taught us; You are, You, the All-Knowing, the Wise."
He said: "O Adam! inform them of their attributes."
And when he had informed them of their attributes, He said: "Did I not tell you that I know what escapes the senses in the heavens and on the earth, and that I know what you show and what you were hiding?"
And remember when We said to the Agents: "Prostrate before Adam"; they prostrated,
واذ قلنا للمليكة اسجدوا لءادم فسجدواexcept the Despairing One [Iblis]: he refused, was arrogant, and was among those who disown.
And We said: "O Adam! dwell, you and your spouse, in the Garden, and eat from it, at your ease, wherever you wish,
وقلنا يادم اسكن انت وزوجك الجنة وكلا منها رغدا حيث شيتماbut do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers."
ولا تقربا هذه الشجرة فتكونا من الظلمينBut the Diverter made them slip out of it, and drove them out of the state they were in;
فازلهما الشيطن عنها فاخرجهما مما كانا فيهand We said: "Descend,
وقلنا اهبطواyou will be enemies to one another,
بعضكم لبعض عدوand you will have, on the earth, a dwelling and an enjoyment for a time."
Then Adam received from his Guardian words, and He turned toward him with clemency.
He is indeed the Ever-Accepter of repentance, Benevolent.
انه هو التواب الرحيمWe said: "Descend from it, all together;
قلنا اهبطوا منها جميعاthen, if guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance, no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.
And those who disown and deny Our signs — those are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally."
O sons of Israel! remember My blessing, that with which I blessed you, and keep My engagement, I will keep yours; and it is Me alone that you should revere.
يبني اسرءيل اذكروا نعمتي التي انعمت عليكم واوفوا بعهدي اوف بعهدكم وايي فارهبونAnd believe in what I have sent down, confirming what is with you, and do not be the first to disown it;
وءامنوا بما انزلت مصدقا لما معكم ولا تكونوا اول كافر بهand do not buy, with My signs, a paltry price; and it is Me alone toward whom you should guard yourselves.
And do not cover the truth with falsehood, and do not hide the truth, while you know.
And maintain the Contact, and give the purifying alms,
واقيموا الصلوة وءاتوا الزكوةand bow with those who bow.
Will you order virtue upon people, while forgetting yourselves, when you recite the Scripture?
Will you not then reason?
And seek help in patience and the Contact:
واستعينوا بالصبر والصلوةthat is surely heavy, except for the humble, those who think that they will meet their Guardian, and that it is to Him that they return.
O sons of Israel! remember My blessing, that with which I blessed you, and that I favored you above all beings.
And guard yourselves against a day when no Self will avail another Self in anything, when no intercession will be accepted from it, when no compensation will be taken from it, and when they will not be helped.
And remember when We saved you from the clan of Fir'awn, who inflicted upon you the worst of punishments, slaughtering your sons and violating the modesty of your women —
واذ نجينكم من ءال فرعون يسومونكم سوء العذاب يذبحون ابناءكم ويستحيون نساءكمand there was in that, for you, an immense testing from your Guardian.
And remember when We split the sea for you, and saved you, and drowned the clan of Fir'awn, while you looked on.
And remember when We appointed for Moussa forty nights; then you took the calf [as a deity], after him, and you were wrongdoers.
Then We effaced [that] for you after that, perhaps you would be grateful.
And remember when We gave Moussa the Scripture
واذ ءاتينا موسى الكتبand the Discernment, perhaps you would be rightly guided.
And remember when Moussa said to his people: "O my people! you have wronged yourselves by taking the calf [as a deity]; turn back, then, to your Originator, and kill yourselves,
واذ قال موسى لقومه يقوم انكم ظلمتم انفسكم باتخاذكم العجل فتوبوا الى باريكم فاقتلوا انفسكمthat is better for you with your Originator."
He turned toward you with clemency, then:
He is indeed the Ever-Accepter of repentance, Benevolent.
And remember when you said: "O Moussa! we will not give you credit until we see God openly"; the thunderbolt seized you then, while you looked on.
Then We resurrected you after your death, perhaps you would be grateful.
And We spread over you the shade of the cloud, and sent down upon you manna and quails:
Eat of the good things We have provided you as sustenance" —
كلوا من طيبت ما رزقنكمthey did not wrong Us, but it was themselves that they wronged.
And remember when We said: "Enter this city, eat from it wherever you wish, at your ease, enter by the gate bowing down, and say: Relieve us [of our faults] — We will forgive you your faults,
واذ قلنا ادخلوا هذه القرية فكلوا منها حيث شيتم رغدا وادخلوا الباب سجدا وقولوا حطة نغفر لكم خطيكمand We will increase [the reward] of those who do good."
But those who were unjust substituted a saying other than what had been said to them; We then sent down upon those who had been unjust a defilement from the sky, for having overstepped.
فبدل الذين ظلموا قولا غير الذي قيل لهم فانزلنا على الذين ظلموا رجزا من السماء بما كانوا يفسقونAnd remember when Moussa asked for water for his people; We said: "Strike the rock with your staff";
واذ استسقى موسى لقومه فقلنا اضرب بعصاك الحجرand behold, twelve springs gushed forth from it:
فانفجرت منه اثنتا عشرة عيناeach group of people knew its drinking place.
Eat and drink of God's sustenance,
كلوا واشربوا من رزق اللهand do not spread disorder on the earth as corrupters.
And remember when you said: "O Moussa! we can never endure a single kind of food; invoke, then, your Guardian for us, that He bring forth for us of what the earth grows, of its herbs, its cucumbers, its garlic, its lentils, and its onions."
He said: "Would you exchange what is near [and immediate] for what is better?
Go down, then, to Egypt, you will find there what you have asked."
And humiliation and misery were imprinted upon them, and they incurred the anger of God.
That is because they used to disown the signs of God, and kill the prophets without right.
It is for having disobeyed and crossed the limits.
Those who have believed, the Reoriented, the Helpers, and the Aspirants — whoever has believed in God and the Last Day, and done righteous work, their reward is theirs with their Guardian, no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.
And remember when We took your solemn engagement, and raised above you the Mount:
Take with strength what We have given you, and remember what is in it, perhaps you will guard yourselves."
خذوا ما ءاتينكم بقوة واذكروا ما فيه لعلكم تتقونThen you turned away after that;
ثم توليتم من بعد ذلكand without God's favor upon you and His benevolence, you would have been among the losers.
You have indeed known those among you who crossed the limits concerning the sabt [the act of rest/inaction]; We then said to them: "Be apes, rejected."
We made of it an exemplary punishment for what surrounded it and what followed, and an admonition for those who guard themselves.
And remember when Moussa said to his people: "God orders you to slaughter a cow."
They said: "Do you take us in mockery?"
He said: "I take refuge in God against being among the ignorant."
They said: "Invoke your Guardian for us, that He make clear to us what it is."
He said: "He says she is a cow neither old nor virgin,
قال انه يقول انها بقرة لا فارض ولا بكرof middle age between the two;
عوان بين ذلكdo, then, what you are ordered."
They said: "Invoke your Guardian for us, that He make clear to us her color."
He said: "He says she is a yellow cow, of a vivid yellow,
They said: "Invoke your Guardian for us, that He make clear to us what it is: the cows all resemble one another to us, and we will, if God wills, be among those who let themselves be guided."
He said: "He says she is a cow not broken to plow the earth or water the crops,
They said: "Now you bring the truth."
They slaughtered her then, after having very nearly not done it.
And remember when you killed a Self, and cast [the blame] on one another concerning it —
واذ قتلتم نفسا فادرءتم فيهاbut God was going to bring out what you were hiding.
والله مخرج ما كنتم تكتمونWe then said: "Strike him [the dead man] with a part [of the cow]";
فقلنا اضربوه ببعضهاthus does God give life to the dead, and show you His signs, perhaps you will reason.
Then your cores hardened after that, so that they are like stone, or harder still.
ثم قست قلوبكم من بعد ذلك فهي كالحجارة او اشد قسوةThere are surely, among stones, those from which rivers burst forth;
وان من الحجارة لما يتفجر منه الانهرand there are surely, among them, those which split, and water comes out of them;
وان منها لما يشقق فيخرج منه الماءand there are surely, among them, those which fall, out of fear of God.
And God is not heedless of what you do.
Would you covet, then, that they give you credit, when a group among them used to hear the word of God, then displace it from its context, after having understood it, while knowing?
افتطمعون ان يومنوا لكم وقد كان فريق منهم يسمعون كلم الله ثم يحرفونه من بعد ما عقلوه وهم يعلمونAnd when they meet those who have believed, they say: "We have believed";
واذا لقوا الذين ءامنوا قالوا ءامناand when they are alone with one another, they say: "Will you relate to them what God has opened to you, that they may dispute with you about it before your Guardian?"
Will you not then reason?
Do they not know, then, that God knows what they hide and what they disclose?
And among them, there are people without a prior Scripture, who know the Scripture only through vain wishes,
ومنهم اميون لا يعلمون الكتب الا امانيand who only conjecture.
Woe, then, to those who write the Scripture with their hands, then say: "This is from God", to sell it for a small price!
Woe to them for what their hands have written,
فويل لهم مما كتبت ايديهمand woe to them for what they earn!
And they said: "The Fire will touch us only for a counted number of days."
Say: "Have you taken an engagement with God — God never fails His engagement —,
قل اتخذتم عند الله عهدا فلن يخلف الله عهدهor do you say about God what you do not know?"
But yes: whoever acquires an evil deed, and whose fault envelops him entirely — those are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally.
And those who have believed and done righteous deeds — those are the companions of the Garden, they abide therein eternally.
And remember when We took the solemn engagement of the Sons of Israel: "You shall obey none but God,
واذ اخذنا ميثق بني اسرءيل لا تعبدون الا اللهand beneficence toward the two parents, relatives, orphans, and the destitute;
وبالولدين احسانا وذي القربى واليتمى والمسكينand speak good words to people;
وقولوا للناس حسناand maintain the Contact, and give the purifying alms";
واقيموا الصلوة وءاتوا الزكوةthen you turned away, except a few of you, evading.
And remember when We took your solemn engagement: "You shall not shed your blood, and shall not expel yourselves from your dwellings"; then you acknowledged it, and you are witnesses to it.
واذ اخذنا ميثقكم لا تسفكون دماءكم ولا تخرجون انفسكم من ديركم ثم اقررتم وانتم تشهدونThen here you are, nonetheless, killing one another, and expelling a group of your own from their dwellings, banding together against them in transgression and hostility;
ثم انتم هولاء تقتلون انفسكم وتخرجون فريقا منكم من ديرهم تظهرون عليهم بالاثم والعدونand if they come to you as captives, you ransom them, even though their expulsion was forbidden to you.
Would you believe, then, in part of the Scripture, and disown another part?
What, then, is the recompense of whoever among you acts thus, but disgrace in the present life?
And on the Day of Appearance, they will be cast back to the most severe of punishments.
And God is not heedless of what you do.
Those are the ones who bought the present life at the price of the last life; the punishment will, then, not be lightened for them, and they will not be helped.
We indeed gave Moussa the Scripture, and We made other messengers follow after him.
And We gave Issa, son of Maryam, the clear proofs, and We reinforced him with the sacred Influx.
Every time a messenger came to you with what your own Selves did not desire, did you not become arrogant?
You denied a group of them, and you kill another.
ففريقا كذبتم وفريقا تقتلونAnd they said: "Our cores are wrapped up";
وقالوا قلوبنا غلفno, God cursed them for their disowning, and they believe only a little.
And when a scripture came to them from God, confirming what is with them — though before they used to ask for the decisive judgment against those who disowned —,
ولما جاءهم كتب من عند الله مصدق لما معهم وكانوا من قبل يستفتحون على الذين كفرواwhen, then, there came to them what they recognized, they disowned it.
The curse of God is, then, upon those who disown.
How evil is what they sold their own Selves for: to disown what God sent down, out of aggression, [resenting] that God should send down of His favor upon whom He wills among His obedient ones!
They incurred, then, anger upon anger.
And for those who disown, a humiliating punishment.
And when it is said to them: "Believe in what God has sent down", they say: "We believe in what was sent down upon us"; and they disown what came after.
واذا قيل لهم ءامنوا بما انزل الله قالوا نومن بما انزل علينا ويكفرون بما وراءهand it is the truth, confirming what is with them.
Say: "Why, then, did you kill the prophets of God, before, if you were believers?"
Moussa indeed came to you with the clear proofs; then you took the calf [as a deity], after him, and you were wrongdoers.
And remember when We took your solemn engagement, and raised above you the Mount:
Take with strength what We have given you, and listen."
They said: "We have heard and disobeyed".
قالوا سمعنا وعصيناand their cores were made to drink in the calf, because of their disowning.
Say: "How evil is what your faith orders you, if you are believers!"
Say: "If the last abode, with God, is reserved exclusively for you, to the exclusion of mankind, wish, then, for death, if you are truthful."
But they will never wish for it, for what their hands have prepared.
God is All-Knowing of the wrongdoers.
You will certainly find them the most attached of people to life,
ولتجدنهم احرص الناس على حيوةeven more than those who have associated; one of them would like to live a thousand years,
ومن الذين اشركوا يود احدهم لو يعمر الف سنةbut that would not remove him at all from the punishment, even if he lived that long.
God sees perfectly what they do.
Say: "Whoever is an enemy of Jibril should know that it is he who brought it down upon your core, with God's permission, confirming what precedes it, and as a guidance and good tidings for the believers."
Whoever is an enemy of God, His Agents, His messengers, Jibril, and Mikal should know that God is the enemy of those who disown.
We have indeed sent down to you clear signs,
ولقد انزلنا اليك ءايت بينتand only the oversteppers disown them.
Is it that, every time they conclude an engagement, a group among them casts it aside?
Most of them, rather, do not believe.
And when a messenger came to them from God, confirming what is with them, a group of those to whom the Scripture was given cast the Scripture of God behind their backs, as if they did not know.
And they followed what the diverters recited concerning the kingdom of Sulayman.
But Sulayman never disowned,
وما كفر سليمنbut it is the diverters who disowned, teaching people illusion, and what was sent down upon the two kings at Babel, Harut and Marut;
ولكن الشيطين كفروا يعلمون الناس السحر وما انزل على الملكين ببابل هروت ومروتand those two did not teach anyone without first saying: "We are only a trial, do not disown, then."
وما يعلمان من احد حتى يقولا انما نحن فتنة فلا تكفرThey learned from them, then, that by which they sow discord between a man and his spouse;
فيتعلمون منهما ما يفرقون به بين المرء وزوجهbut they harm no one by that, except with God's permission.
And they learn what harms them and does not benefit them.
They indeed knew that whoever acquired it would have, in the last life, no share.
How evil is what they sold their own Selves for, had they known!
And had they believed and guarded themselves, a reward from God would indeed have been better, had they known.
O you who have believed! do not say "Disdain us", but say "Look at us", and listen.
And for those who disown, a painful punishment.
وللكفرين عذاب اليمNeither those who disown, among the people of the Scripture, nor the associators wish that any good be sent down upon you from your Guardian;
ما يود الذين كفروا من اهل الكتب ولا المشركين ان ينزل عليكم من خير من ربكمbut God reserves His benevolence for whom He wills.
God holds the immense favor.
Whatever sign We copy, or leave to be forgotten, We bring one better than it, or similar to it.
Do you not know that God is capable of all things?
Do you not know that to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and that you have, besides God, neither protector nor helper?
Would you question your messenger as Moussa was questioned before?
And whoever exchanges disowning for faith has indeed strayed from the straight path.
Many, among the people of the Scripture, would like to bring you back, after your faith, to a disowning,
ود كثير من اهل الكتب لو يردونكم من بعد ايمنكم كفاراout of envy, from themselves, after the truth has become clear to them.
Efface, then, and overlook, until God brings His command.
God is indeed capable of all things.
And maintain the Contact, and give the purifying alms.
And whatever good you advance for yourselves, you will find it with God.
God indeed sees perfectly what you do.
And they said: "None will enter the Garden, except one who belongs to the Reoriented or the Helpers."
Those are their vain wishes.
Say: "Bring your proof, if you are truthful."
But rather: whoever renders his direction true to God alone, while doing good, has his reward with his Guardian; no fear upon them, and they will not be grieved.
And the Reoriented said: "The Helpers rest on nothing"; and the Helpers said: "The Reoriented rest on nothing"; while they recite the Scripture.
Thus spoke those who do not know, holding a saying similar to theirs.
God will judge between them, on the Day of Appearance, concerning what they used to differ over.
And who is then more unjust than one who prevents God's name from being mentioned in God's places of prostration, and strives for their ruin?
Those should not enter them except fearful.
They have, in the present life, a disgrace,
لهم في الدنيا خزيand they will have, in the last life, an immense punishment.
And to God belong the east and the west:
ولله المشرق والمغربwherever you turn, there is the direction of God.
God is indeed Vast, All-Knowing.
And they said: "God has taken a child."
Glory be to Him!
سبحنهTo Him, rather, belongs what is in the heavens and on the earth;
بل له ما في السموت والارضall are devoted to Him.
Unprecedented Creator of the heavens and the earth.
When He decrees a thing, He only says to it: "Be",
واذا قضى امرا فانما يقول له كنand it is.
And those who do not know said: "Why does God not speak to us, or why does a sign not come to us!"
وقال الذين لا يعلمون لولا يكلمنا الله او تاتينا ءايةThus spoke those before them, holding a saying similar to theirs;
كذلك قال الذين من قبلهم مثل قولهمtheir cores resemble one another.
We have indeed made the signs clear for a people who possess certainty.
We have indeed sent you, in truth, as a bearer of good tidings and a warner,
انا ارسلنك بالحق بشيرا ونذيراand you will not be questioned about the companions of the Blaze.
And neither the Reoriented nor the Helpers will ever be satisfied with you, until you follow their doctrine.
Say: "The guidance of God, that is the [true] guidance."
And were you to follow their emotions, after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have, against God, neither protector nor helper.
Those to whom We have given the Scripture, and who recite it as it should be recited, those are the ones who believe in it.
And whoever disowns it — those are the losers.
O sons of Israel! remember My blessing, that with which I blessed you, and that I favored you above all beings.
And guard yourselves against a day when no Self will avail another Self in anything, when no compensation will be accepted from it, when no intercession will benefit it, and when they will not be helped.
And remember when the Guardian of Ibrahim tested him with words, which he fulfilled completely.
He said: "I am going to make you a guide for mankind."
He said: "And among my descendants?"
He said: "My engagement does not reach the wrongdoers."
And remember when We made the House a place of return for mankind, and a security; and take, from the station of Ibrahim, a place of Contact.
And We engaged Ibrahim and Isma'il: "Purify My House for those who frequent it, those who dwell there permanently, and those who bow in service and submit in allegiance."
And remember when Ibrahim said: "My Guardian, make of this a secure land, and provide of its fruits as sustenance to its inhabitants, to those among them who believe in God and the Last Day."
He said: "And whoever disowns, I grant him a brief enjoyment, then I compel him toward the punishment of the Fire."
And what an evil destination!
And remember when Ibrahim was raising the foundations of the House, with Isma'il:
Our Guardian, accept this from us; You are, You, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
Our Guardian, make us both true to You alone, and, of our descendants, a community true to You alone.
And show us our beneficent practices.
And turn toward us with clemency.
You are indeed, You, the Ever-Accepter of repentance, Benevolent.
Our Guardian, and raise up among them a messenger, from among themselves, who recites Your signs to them, teaches them the Scripture and the wisdom, and purifies them.
You, indeed, are the All-Powerful, the Wise."
And who, then, turns away from the doctrine of Ibrahim, but one who despises his own Self?
We indeed chose him in the present life,
ولقد اصطفينه في الدنياand in the last life, he will surely be among the righteous.
وانه في الءاخرة لمن الصلحينremember when his Guardian said to him: "Be true to Me alone";
اذ قال له ربه اسلمhe said: "I am true to the Guardian of all beings alone."
And Ibrahim made this a recommendation to his sons,
ووصى بها ابرهم بنيهand so did Yaacoub: "O my sons! God has chosen this Law for you; do not die, then, except being true to Him alone."
Were you witnesses, when death presented itself to Yaacoub, when he said to his sons: "What will you obey after me?"
They said: "We will obey your deity, the deity of your ancestors, Ibrahim, Isma'il, and Ishaq, one deity, and to Him we are true."
That is a community that has already passed:
تلك امة قد خلتto it what it earned,
لها ما كسبتand to you what you earned;
ولكم ما كسبتمand you will not be questioned about what they used to do.
And they said: "Be Reoriented or Helpers, you will be rightly guided."
Say: "No, rather the doctrine of Ibrahim, wholly turned toward God,"
قل بل ملة ابرهم حنيفاand he was not among those who associate.
Say: "We believe in God, in what has been revealed to us, in what was revealed to Ibrahim, Isma'il, Ishaq, Yaacoub, and the tribes, and in what was given to Moussa and Issa, and in what was given to the prophets, from their Guardian; we make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we are true."
قولوا ءامنا بالله وما انزل الينا وما انزل الى ابرهم واسمعيل واسحق ويعقوب والاسباط وما اوتي موسى وعيسى وما اوتي النبيون من ربهم لا نفرق بين احد منهم ونحن له مسلمونIf they believe in what you have believed, they are then rightly guided;
فان ءامنوا بمثل ما ءامنتم به فقد اهتدواand if they turn away, they are then only in a rupture;
God will soon suffice you against them:
He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
The dye of God —
صبغة اللهand who dyes better than God? —
ومن احسن من الله صبغةand it is Him that we obey.
Say: "Do you dispute with us about God, when He is our Guardian and your Guardian? To us our deeds, and to you your deeds,
قل اتحاجوننا في الله وهو ربنا وربكم ولنا اعملنا ولكم اعملكمand to Him we devote ourselves exclusively."
Or do you say that Ibrahim, Isma'il, Ishaq, Yaacoub, and the tribes were Reoriented or Helpers?
Say: "Is it you who know best, or God?"
And who, then, is more unjust than one who hides a testimony he holds from God?
And God is not heedless of what you do.
That is a community that has already passed:
تلك امة قد خلتto it what it earned,
لها ما كسبتand to you what you earned;
ولكم ما كسبتمand you will not be questioned about what they used to do.
The fools, among the people, will say: "What has turned them away from their anchor point, the one they used to be upon?"
سيقول السفهاء من الناس ما ولىهم عن قبلتهم التي كانوا عليهاSay: "To God belong the east and the west;
He guides whom He wills to a straight path."
And thus have We made you an exemplary community,
وكذلك جعلنكم امة وسطاso that you may be witnesses against mankind, and the messenger a witness against you.
And We had established the anchor point, the one you were upon, only to distinguish who follows the messenger from who turns back on his heels.
That was indeed heavy, except for those God has guided.
And it is not for God to let your faith be lost.
God is surely, toward mankind, full of kindness, Benevolent.
We indeed see, from the sky, this [coming] turning about of your face [a refugee in search of guidance, no longer knowing where to turn]; We will direct you, then, toward an anchor point that will suit you [as a final destination].
Set your course, then, for the inviolable place of prostration,
فول وجهك شطر المسجد الحرامand wherever you are, set your course for this anchor point.
Those to whom the Scripture was given surely know that it is the truth from their Guardian.
And God is not heedless of what they do.
And even if you brought to those to whom the Scripture was given every sign, they would not follow your anchor point.
ولين اتيت الذين اوتوا الكتب بكل ءاية ما تبعوا قبلتكAnd you will not follow their anchor point;
وما انت بتابع قبلتهمnor do they follow, some of them, the anchor point of others.
And were you to follow their emotions, after what has come to you of knowledge, you would then surely be among the wrongdoers.
Those to whom We gave the Scripture recognize him as they recognize their own children,
الذين ءاتينهم الكتب يعرفونه كما يعرفون ابناءهمand a group among them surely hides the truth, while knowing.
وان فريقا منهم ليكتمون الحق وهم يعلمونThe truth comes from your Guardian;
الحق من ربكso never be among those who doubt.
And to each a direction that he adopts; race, then, in good deeds.
Wherever you are, God will bring you all back.
God is indeed capable of all things.
And from wherever you come out, set your course for the inviolable place of prostration:
ومن حيث خرجت فول وجهك شطر المسجد الحرامit is surely the truth from your Guardian.
And God is not heedless of what you do.
And from wherever you come out, set your course for the inviolable place of prostration,
ومن حيث خرجت فول وجهك شطر المسجد الحرامand wherever you are, set your course for this anchor point, so that people may have no argument against you — except those among them who are unjust; do not fear them, then, but fear Me —
وحيث ما كنتم فولوا وجوهكم شطره ليلا يكون للناس عليكم حجة الا الذين ظلموا منهم فلا تخشوهم واخشونيand so that I may complete My blessing upon you, and perhaps you will be rightly guided,
ولاتم نعمتي عليكم ولعلكم تهتدونas We have sent, among you, a messenger from among yourselves, who recites Our signs to you, purifies you, teaches you the Scripture and the wisdom, and teaches you what you did not know. Remember Me, then, I will remember you; be grateful to Me, and do not disown Me.
O you who have believed! seek help in patience and the Contact:
God is indeed with the patient.
And do not say of those who are killed in the way of God that they are dead.
No, they are alive, but you do not perceive it.
بل احياء ولكن لا تشعرونWe will certainly test you with some fear, hunger, loss of goods, persons, and fruits;
ولنبلونكم بشىء من الخوف والجوع ونقص من الامول والانفس والثمرتand give good news to the patient, those who, when misfortune strikes them, say: "We are God's, and it is to Him that we return."
Those are the ones upon whom rest blessings from their Guardian, and a benevolence,
اوليك عليهم صلوت من ربهم ورحمةand those are the ones who let themselves be guided.
Safa and Marwa are indeed among the perceptible markers of God.
Whoever performs the Hajj of the House — a debt owed to God — or performs the Umra, no blame upon him for visiting them.
And whoever does good willingly — God is Grateful, All-Knowing.
Those who hide what We have sent down of clear proofs and guidance, after We have made it clear to mankind in the Scripture — those are the ones God curses, and whom those who curse, curse,
ان الذين يكتمون ما انزلنا من البينت والهدى من بعد ما بينه للناس في الكتب اوليك يلعنهم الله ويلعنهم اللعنونexcept those who turn back [to God], reform, and make [the truth] clear: those are the ones toward whom I turn with clemency; I am the Ever-Accepter of repentance, Benevolent.
الا الذين تابوا واصلحوا وبينوا فاوليك اتوب عليهم وانا التواب الرحيمThose who disown and die while disowning — those are the ones upon whom weighs the curse of God, the Agents, and mankind, all together, wherein they will abide eternally;
ان الذين كفروا وماتوا وهم كفار اوليك عليهم لعنة الله والمليكة والناس اجمعين خلدين فيهاthe punishment will not be lightened for them, and they will not be granted a delay.
لا يخفف عنهم العذاب ولا هم ينظرونAnd your deity is one deity;
والهكم اله وحدthere is no deity but Him,
لا اله الا هوthe All-Benevolent, the Benevolent.
There are surely, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, in the alternation of night and day, in the ship that sails at sea laden with what benefits mankind, in the water that God sends down from the sky and by which He gives life to the earth after its death, spreading in it every kind of living being, in the diversity of the winds, and in the cloud subjected between the sky and the earth — signs for a people who reason.
ان في خلق السموت والارض واختلف اليل والنهار والفلك التي تجري في البحر بما ينفع الناس وما انزل الله من السماء من ماء فاحيا به الارض بعد موتها وبث فيها من كل دابة وتصريف الريح والسحاب المسخر بين السماء والارض لءايت لقوم يعقلونAnd among the people, there are some who take, besides God, equals, whom they love as one loves God;
ومن الناس من يتخذ من دون الله اندادا يحبونهم كحب اللهbut those who have believed are even more intense in the love of God.
If the unjust could see, when they see the punishment, that power belongs to God in its entirety, and that God is severe in punishment —
ولو يرى الذين ظلموا اذ يرون العذاب ان القوة لله جميعا وان الله شديد العذاب[they would see it] when those who were followed will disavow those who followed them, and they will see the punishment, and the bonds between them will be severed.
And those who followed will say: "If only we had a return, we would disavow them as they have disavowed us."
Thus does God show them their works, as bitter regrets for them,
كذلك يريهم الله اعملهم حسرت عليهمand they will never leave the Fire.
O mankind! eat of what is on the earth, lawful and good,
يايها الناس كلوا مما في الارض حللا طيباand do not follow the footsteps of the Diverter:
ولا تتبعوا خطوت الشيطنhe is indeed for you a manifest enemy.
He orders you only evil and indecency, and to say about God what you do not know.
And when it is said to them: "Follow what God has sent down", they say: "No, we follow what we found our ancestors upon."
What! even if their ancestors reasoned nothing and were not rightly guided?
And the likeness of those who disown is that of one who cries out to what hears nothing but a call and a shout.
Deaf, mute, blind, they do not, then, reason.
O you who have believed! eat of the good things We have provided you as sustenance, and be grateful toward God, if it is Him alone that you obey.
He has forbidden you only the dead animal, blood, the flesh of swine, and what has been consecrated to other than God.
But whoever is compelled to it, without being rebellious or crossing the limits, no transgression upon him.
God is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
Those who hide what God has sent down of the Scripture, and sell it for a small price — those are the ones who swallow nothing into their bellies but the Fire; God will not speak to them on the Day of Appearance, and will not purify them,
Those are the ones who bought error at the price of guidance, and punishment at the price of forgiveness. What, then, makes them so enduring in the face of the Fire!
That is because God sent down the Scripture in truth,
ذلك بان الله نزل الكتب بالحقand those who differ about the Scripture are surely in a deep rupture.
Virtue does not consist in turning your faces toward the east or the west,
ليس البر ان تولوا وجوهكم قبل المشرق والمغربbut virtue is one who believes in God, the Last Day, the Agents, the Scripture, and the prophets, and who gives of his goods, despite his love for it, to relatives, orphans, the destitute, the stranded traveler, those who ask, and for freeing those under the burden of a debt, who maintains the Contact and gives the purifying alms,
ولكن البر من ءامن بالله واليوم الءاخر والمليكة والكتب والنبين وءاتى المال على حبه ذوي القربى واليتمى والمسكين وابن السبيل والسايلين وفي الرقاب واقام الصلوة وءاتى الزكوةthose who keep their engagement when they have engaged themselves,
والموفون بعهدهم اذا عهدواand the patient in hardship, distress, and the hour of violence:
والصبرين في الباساء والضراء وحين الباسthose are the ones who have been truthful,
اوليك الذين صدقواand those are the ones who guard themselves.
O you who have believed! the investigation is prescribed for you concerning those killed:
يايها الذين ءامنوا كتب عليكم القصاص في القتلىthe free man [independent] with the free man [independent], the obedient one [salaried] with the obedient one [salaried], and the woman with the woman.
But if a remission is granted [to the offender] by his brother [in humanity, not a brother in the familial sense], then a pursuit [of the compensation] according to what is recognized, and a settlement in good grace.
That is a lightening from your Guardian, and a benevolence.
And whoever commits aggression after that will have a painful punishment.
And you have, in the investigation, a life, O possessors of intelligence, perhaps you will guard yourselves.
It is prescribed for you, when death presents itself to one of you, if he leaves goods,
كتب عليكم اذا حضر احدكم الموت ان ترك خيراthe testament in favor of the two parents and relatives, according to what is recognized:
الوصية للولدين والاقربين بالمعروفa duty upon those who guard themselves.
And whoever modifies it after having heard it, the transgression thereof falls only upon those who modify it.
God is indeed the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
But whoever fears, on the part of a testator, a partiality or a transgression, and reconciles them, no transgression upon him.
God is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
O you who have believed! abstention is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, perhaps you will guard yourselves, for a number of counted days.
يايها الذين ءامنوا كتب عليكم الصيام كما كتب على الذين من قبلكم لعلكم تتقون اياما معدودتAnd whoever among you is sick, or on a journey, then a number of other days;
فمن كان منكم مريضا او على سفر فعدة من ايام اخرand for those who have the capacity for it, a compensation, the feeding of a destitute person.
وعلى الذين يطيقونه فدية طعام مسكينAnd whoever does good willingly, it is better for him;
فمن تطوع خيرا فهو خير لهand that you abstain is better for you, if you knew.
The month of refreshment, that in which this Recitation was revealed, a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of guidance and the Discernment.
شهر رمضان الذي انزل فيه القرءان هدى للناس وبينت من الهدى والفرقانWhoever among you attests the beginning of that month, let him abstain in it;
فمن شهد منكم الشهر فليصمهand whoever is sick, or on a journey, then a number of other days.
God wants for you ease, He does not want for you hardship,
يريد الله بكم اليسر ولا يريد بكم العسرand [He wants] that you bring the count of days to its completion, and that you proclaim the greatness of God for having guided you, perhaps you will be grateful.
And when My obedient ones ask you about Me, I am near:
I answer the call of the one who calls upon Me, when he calls upon Me.
Let them, then, respond to My call, and believe in Me, perhaps they will attain rectitude.
Made lawful for you, on the night of abstention, is intimacy with your women:
احل لكم ليلة الصيام الرفث الى نسايكمthey are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them.
God knew that you were betraying yourselves; He turned toward you with clemency, then, and effaced [the fault] for you.
Unite with them, then, now,
فالن بشروهنand seek what God has prescribed for you.
And eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinguishable to you from the black thread of dawn,
وكلوا واشربوا حتى يتبين لكم الخيط الابيض من الخيط الاسود من الفجرthen complete the abstention fully until night.
And do not unite with them, while you are in residence in the places of prostration.
Those are the limits of God,
تلك حدود اللهso do not approach them.
Thus does God make His signs clear for mankind, perhaps they will guard themselves.
And do not devour your goods among yourselves through falsehood, and do not offer it to judges to devour, through transgression, a part of the goods of the people, knowingly.
They ask you about public announcements.
Say: "They are fixed appointments for mankind, and for the Hajj."
And virtue does not consist in entering houses from their backs,
وليس البر بان تاتوا البيوت من ظهورهاbut virtue is [that of] one who guards himself.
Enter, then, houses by their doors,

And whoever does not find the means, then an abstention of three days during the Hajj, and seven once you have returned: that is ten complete days.

And among them, there is one who says: "Our Guardian, give us a good share in the present life, and a good share in the last life, and preserve us from the punishment of the Fire."

And when he turns away, he strives on the earth to sow corruption in it, and to annihilate crops and offspring.
God does not love corruption.
And when it is said to him: "Guard yourself toward God", [claimed] might seizes him in transgression; Jahannam suffices him, then.

ومن يبدل نعمة الله من بعد ما جاءته فان الله شديد العقابThe present life has been embellished for those who disown, and they mock those who have believed;
زين للذين كفروا الحيوة الدنيا ويسخرون من الذين ءامنواbut those who guard themselves will be above them, on the Day of Appearance.
And God provides sustenance to whom He wills, without measure.
Mankind formed a single community; God then raised up the prophets, bearers of good tidings and warners, and sent down with them the Scripture, in truth, so that it might judge between people what they differed over.
And only those to whom it was given diverged over it,
وما اختلف فيه الا الذين اوتوهafter the clear proofs had come to them, out of aggression among themselves.
God then guided those who believed to the truth over which they diverged, with His permission.
And God guides whom He wills to a straight path.
Or did you think you would enter the Garden, when there has not yet come to you the equivalent of what those before you experienced? Hardship and misfortune touched them, and they were shaken to the point that the messenger and those who had believed with him said: "When, then, is the help of God?"
Is it not so: the help of God is near!
They ask you: what should they spend?
Say: "Whatever good you spend belongs to the two parents, relatives, orphans, the destitute, and the stranded traveler."
And whatever good you do, God knows it perfectly.
Combat is prescribed for you, though it is distasteful to you.
كتب عليكم القتال وهو كره لكمIt may be that you dislike a thing, while it is a good for you;
وعسى ان تكرهوا شيا وهو خير لكمand it may be that you like a thing, while it is an evil for you.
God knows,

قل قتال فيه كبيرbut to turn away from the path of God, disown it, [turn away] from the inviolable place of prostration, and expel its inhabitants from it, is graver still with God;
وصد عن سبيل الله وكفر به والمسجد الحرام واخراج اهله منه اكبر عند اللهand the trial is graver than killing."
And they will not cease to fight you until they make you renounce your Law, if they can.
And whoever among you renounces his Law, and dies while disowning — those are the ones whose works have collapsed, in the present life and in the last life,
ومن يرتدد منكم عن دينه فيمت وهو كافر فاوليك حبطت اعملهم في الدنيا والءاخرةand those are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally.
Those who have believed, those who have emigrated and have striven in the way of God — those are the ones who hope for the benevolence of God.
God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
They ask you about wine and games of chance.
يسلونك عن الخمر والميسرSay: "There is, in both, a great transgression, and profits for people;
قل فيهما اثم كبير ومنفع للناسbut their transgression is greater than their profit."
And they ask you: what should they spend? Say: "The surplus."
Thus does God make the signs clear to you, perhaps you will reflect on the present life and on the last life.
كذلك يبين الله لكم الءايت لعلكم تتفكرون في الدنيا والءاخرةAnd they ask you about orphans. Say: "Setting their situation right is a good;
ويسلونك عن اليتمى قل اصلاح لهم خيرand if you mix your affairs with theirs, they are your brothers."
God distinguishes the sower of corruption from him who sets things right.
And had God willed, He would have overwhelmed you.

ويبين ءايته للناس لعلهم يتذكرونAnd they ask you about menstruation. Say: "It is an inconvenience;
ويسلونك عن المحيض قل هو اذىso keep away from women during menstruation,
فاعتزلوا النساء في المحيضand do not approach them until they are no longer inconvenienced.
And once they are no longer so, unite with them from where God has ordered you."
God loves those who turn back [to Him], and He loves those who keep themselves clean.

وقدموا لانفسكمand guard yourselves toward God,
واتقوا اللهand know that you will meet Him.
And give good news to the believers.
And do not make God, in your oaths, a pretext you use at will,
ولا تجعلوا الله عرضة لايمنكمto being virtuous, guarding yourselves, and reconciling people.

وان عزموا الطلق فان الله سميع عليمAnd repudiated women observe a waiting period of three cycles;
والمطلقت يتربصن بانفسهن ثلثة قروءand it is not lawful for them to hide what God has created in their wombs, if they believe in God and the Last Day.
And their husbands have greater right to take them back during this period, if they want a reconciliation.
وبعولتهن احق بردهن في ذلك ان ارادوا اصلحاAnd they have rights equivalent to their obligations, according to what is recognized;
ولهن مثل الذي عليهن بالمعروفand men have, over them, a degree [of responsibility].
God is All-Powerful, Wise.

Then, either a resumption according to what is recognized, or a release in good grace.
And it is not lawful for you to take back anything of what you gave them, unless both fear that they will not maintain the limits of God.

And whoever crosses the limits of God — those are the wrongdoers.

And if this one repudiates her, no blame upon them both for reuniting, if they think they will maintain the limits of God.
Those are the limits of God, which He makes clear for a people who know.
وتلك حدود الله يبينها لقوم يعلمونAnd when you repudiate women, and they reach their term, keep them according to what is recognized, or release them according to what is recognized;
واذا طلقتم النساء فبلغن اجلهن فامسكوهن بمعروف او سرحوهن بمعروفand do not keep them out of harm, to commit aggression.
And whoever does that has wronged himself.
And do not take the signs of God in mockery.
And remember God's blessing upon you, and what He has sent down upon you of the Scripture and the wisdom, by which He exhorts you.

And when you repudiate women, and they reach their term, do not prevent them from marrying their [new] spouses, once they mutually consent according to what is recognized.
That is what whoever among you believes in God and the Last Day is exhorted to.
That is more pure for you, and cleaner.
God knows, and you do not know.
And mothers take their children into care for two complete years,
والولدت يرضعن اولدهن حولين كاملينfor whoever wants to bring this care to completion.
And it is incumbent upon the father to provide for their food and their clothing, according to what is recognized.
No Self is burdened beyond its capacity.
Let no mother be wronged because of her child, nor any father because of his child.
And upon the heir falls the same thing.
And if they want a weaning, by their mutual consent and after consultation, no blame upon them both.
And if you want to have your children taken into care [by another woman], no blame upon you, once you settle what you owe according to what is recognized.
And guard yourselves toward God,
واتقوا اللهand know that God sees perfectly what you do.
واعلموا ان الله بما تعملون بصيرAnd those among you who die leaving wives, they observe a waiting period of four months and ten;
والذين يتوفون منكم ويذرون ازوجا يتربصن بانفسهن اربعة اشهر وعشراand once they reach their term, no blame upon you for what they do with themselves according to what is recognized.
God is Informed of what you do.
And no blame upon you, in what you hint at as a proposal of marriage to women, or what you keep within yourselves.
God knows that you will think of them; but do not promise them anything in secret,
علم الله انكم ستذكرونهن ولكن لا تواعدوهن سراexcept to say a recognized word.
And do not conclude the marriage contract before the document [of the waiting period] reaches its term.
And know that God knows what is in your Selves; beware of Him, then.
And know that God is Most-Forgiving, full of patience.
No blame upon you, if you repudiate women while you have not touched them, or have not fixed an obligation for them.
And grant them an enjoyment — the affluent according to his means, and the modest according to his means — an enjoyment according to what is recognized:
ومتعوهن على الموسع قدره وعلى المقتر قدره متعا بالمعروفa duty upon those who do good.
And if you repudiate them before having touched them, while you have fixed an obligation for them, half of what you fixed [belongs to them], unless they forgo it, or unless he in whose hands is the marriage contract forgoes it.
And that you forgo is closer to guardedness.
And do not forget the favor between you.
God indeed sees perfectly what you do.
Keep the Contacts, and the most perfect [possible] Contact, and stand before God, devoted.
حفظوا على الصلوت والصلوة الوسطى وقوموا لله قنتينAnd if you fear [danger], then on foot or mounted [by any means of transport];
فان خفتم فرجالا او ركباناand once secure, remember God as He has taught you what you did not know.
فاذا امنتم فاذكروا الله كما علمكم ما لم تكونوا تعلمونAnd those among you who die leaving wives — a prescription [from God] in favor of their wives: an enjoyment until the anniversary [of death], without expulsion;
والذين يتوفون منكم ويذرون ازوجا وصية لازوجهم متعا الى الحول غير اخراجbut if they leave, no blame upon you for what they do with themselves that is recognized.
God is All-Powerful, Wise.
And for repudiated women, an enjoyment according to what is recognized:
وللمطلقت متع بالمعروفa duty upon those who guard themselves.
Thus does God make His signs clear to you, perhaps you will reason.
Have you not seen those who went out of their dwellings, by thousands, out of fear of death? God then said to them: "Die"; then He brought them back to life.
God surely holds a favor toward mankind,
ان الله لذو فضل على الناسbut most people are not grateful.
And fight in the way of God, and know that God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
Who, then, will make God a beautiful loan, which He will multiply for him many times over?
God tightens and extends [sustenance],
والله يقبض ويبصطand it is to Him that you will be returned.
Have you not seen the court, among the Sons of Israel, after Moussa, when they said to a prophet of theirs: "Raise up for us a king, that we may fight in the way of God"?
He said: "Might it be that, if combat were prescribed for you, you would not fight?"
They said: "And what reason would we have not to fight in the way of God, when we have been expelled from our dwellings and [separated] from our children?"
But when combat was prescribed for them, they turned away, except a small number of them.
God is All-Knowing of the wrongdoers.
And their prophet said to them: "God has indeed raised up for you Talut as king."
They said: "How would he have the kingship over us, when we have more right to it than he, and he has not been given abundance of goods?"
He said: "God has chosen him over you, and increased him in breadth of knowledge and constitution."
God gives His kingship to whom He wills.
God is Vast, All-Knowing.
And their prophet said to them: "The sign of his kingship will be that the ark comes to you, wherein is a tranquility from your Guardian, and a remnant of what the family of Moussa and the family of Harun left, carried by the Agents."
There is surely in that a sign for you, if you are believers.
When Talut set out with the troops, he said: "God is going to try you with a river: whoever drinks from it is not of me, and whoever does not taste it is of me — except one who draws a scoop with his hand."
They drank from it, except a small number of them.
Then, when they had crossed it, he and those who had believed with him, they said: "We have no strength today against Jalut and his troops."
Those who thought that they would meet God said: "How many a small group has overcome a large group, with God's permission!"
God is with the patient.
And when they came out to face Jalut and his troops, they said: "Our Guardian, pour patience upon us, make firm our steps, and help us against the people who disown"; they routed them then, with God's permission,
ولما برزوا لجالوت وجنوده قالوا ربنا افرغ علينا صبرا وثبت اقدامنا وانصرنا على القوم الكفرين فهزموهم باذن اللهand Dawud killed Jalut; God gave him kingship and wisdom, and taught him what He willed.
وقتل داود جالوت وءاتىه الله الملك والحكمة وعلمه مما يشاءAnd without God repelling people, some by others, the earth would indeed have been given over to corruption;
ولولا دفع الله الناس بعضهم ببعض لفسدت الارضbut God holds a favor toward all beings.
Those are the signs of God, which We recite to you in truth,
تلك ءايت الله نتلوها عليك بالحقand you are surely among the envoys.
Those are the messengers:
We favored some of them above others.
Among them, there is one to whom God spoke,
منهم من كلم اللهand He raised others in degrees.
And We gave Issa, son of Maryam, the clear proofs, and We reinforced him with the sacred Influx.
وءاتينا عيسى ابن مريم البينت وايدنه بروح القدسAnd had God willed, those who came after them would not have fought one another, after the clear proofs had come to them;
ولكن اختلفواamong them, there are some who believed, and some who disowned.
فمنهم من ءامن ومنهم من كفرAnd had God willed, they would not have fought one another;
ولو شاء الله ما اقتتلواbut God does what He wills.
O you who have believed! spend from what We have provided you as sustenance, before a day comes wherein there will be neither trade, nor friendship, nor intercession.
And those who disown — those are the wrongdoers.
God, there is no deity but Him,
الله لا اله الا هوthe Living, the Self-Subsisting.
Neither drowsiness nor sleep seizes Him.
To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth.
Who, then, intercedes with Him, except with His permission?
He knows what is before them and what is behind them,
يعلم ما بين ايديهم وما خلفهمand they encompass nothing of His knowledge, except what He wills.
His Seat extends over the heavens and the earth,
وسع كرسيه السموت والارضand their guarding costs Him no effort.
He is the Most High, the Immense.
No compulsion in the Law:
لا اكراه في الدينrectitude of judgment has become distinct from misguidance.
Whoever disowns the Tyrant and believes in God has held firmly to the surest handhold, which never breaks.
God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
God is the protector of those who have believed, He brings them out of the darknesses toward the light.
And those who disown, their protectors are the Tyrant, who brings them out of the light toward the darknesses.
Those are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally.
Have you not seen him who disputed with Ibrahim about his Guardian, because God had given him kingship? When Ibrahim said: "My Guardian is He who gives life and causes death",
الم تر الى الذي حاج ابرهم في ربه ان ءاتىه الله الملك اذ قال ابرهم ربي الذي يحي ويميتhe said: "I too give life and cause death."
Ibrahim said: "God brings the sun from the east; bring it, then, from the west"; the one who disowned was left with his words unraveled, then.
And God does not guide the wrongdoing people.
Or like him who passed by a city, empty despite its edifices.
He said: "How will God bring this back to life, after its death?" God then caused him to die a hundred years, then He resurrected him.
He said: "How long have you remained?"
He said: "I have remained a day, or part of a day."
He said: "No, you have remained a hundred years.
قال بل لبثت ماية عامLook, then, at your food and your drink: they have not waited [to spoil];
فانظر الى طعامك وشرابك لم يتسنهand look at your donkey —
وانظر الى حماركand so that We may make of you a sign for mankind.
And look at the bones, how We raise them up, then clothe them with flesh.
When this had become clear to him, he said: "I know that God is capable of all things."
And remember when Ibrahim said: "My Guardian, show me how You give life to the dead."
He said: "Do you not believe, then?"
He said: "Yes, indeed; it is only so that my core may find ease."
He said: "Take, then, four birds, tame them to yourself, then place, on each hill, a part of them, then call them: they will come to you swiftly.
And know that God is All-Powerful, Wise."
The likeness of those who spend their goods in the way of God is that of a grain which grows seven ears,
God multiplies for whom He wills.
God is Vast, All-Knowing.
Those who spend their goods in the way of God, then do not follow what they spent with either reminder or harm, have their reward with their Guardian; no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.
A recognized word and forgiveness are better than alms followed by harm.
God is self-sufficient, full of patience.
O you who have believed! do not render your alms vain by reminder [of your benefactions] and harm, like one who spends his goods for show before people, and believes neither in God nor in the Last Day.
His likeness is that of a smooth rock covered with soil: a torrential rain strikes it, and leaves it bare.
They hold nothing of what they have earned.
And God does not guide the people who disown.
And the likeness of those who spend their goods, seeking the good pleasure of God and the strengthening of their own Selves, is that of a garden on a height: a torrential rain strikes it, and it gives its yield twofold; and if no torrential rain strikes it, a drizzle [suffices].
God sees perfectly what you do.
Would one of you like to have a garden of palm trees and vines, beneath which rivers flow, wherein he would have all kinds of fruits, then old age strikes him, while he has a weak offspring, and a whirlwind of fire strikes it, and it burns?
Thus does God make the signs clear to you, perhaps you will reflect.
O you who have believed! spend of the good things you have earned, and of what We have brought forth for you from the earth,
يايها الذين ءامنوا انفقوا من طيبت ما كسبتم ومما اخرجنا لكم من الارضand do not aim at what is vile of it to spend, when you would not accept it yourselves except by closing your eyes to it.
And know that God is self-sufficient, worthy of praise.
The Diverter promises you poverty, and orders you to indecency,
الشيطن يعدكم الفقر ويامركم بالفحشاءwhile God promises you, from Himself, a forgiveness and a favor.
God is Vast, All-Knowing.
He gives wisdom to whom He wills,
يوتي الحكمة من يشاءand whoever receives wisdom has received an abundant good.
And only the possessors of intelligence take heed.
And whatever expenditure you spend, or vow you make, God knows it.
And the wrongdoers have no helpers.
وما للظلمين من انصارIf you disclose your alms, that is excellent;
ان تبدوا الصدقت فنعما هيand if you hide them and give them to the poor, that is better for you, and it covers a part of your evil deeds.
God is Informed of what you do.
It is not incumbent upon you to guide them,
ليس عليك هدىهمbut God guides whom He wills.
And whatever good you spend, it is for yourselves.
And you spend only seeking the direction of God.
And whatever good you spend, it will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.
وما تنفقوا من خير يوف اليكم وانتم لا تظلمونThis belongs to the poor who are held back in the way of God, unable to travel through the land: the ignorant thinks them rich, because of their restraint;
للفقراء الذين احصروا في سبيل الله لا يستطيعون ضربا في الارض يحسبهم الجاهل اغنياء من التعففyou recognize them by their marks: they do not ask people insistently.
And whatever good you spend, God knows it perfectly.
Those who spend their goods by night and by day, in secret and openly, have their reward with their Guardian; no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.
Those who devour usury rise only as one rises whom the Diverter has overturned by his touch.
الذين ياكلون الربوا لا يقومون الا كما يقوم الذي يتخبطه الشيطن من المسThat is because they said: "Trade is only ever like usury";
ذلك بانهم قالوا انما البيع مثل الربواbut God has made trade lawful, and forbidden usury.
Whoever, an admonition from his Guardian having reached him, ceases, will keep what is past,
فمن جاءه موعظة من ربه فانتهى فله ما سلفand his matter rests with God;
وامره الى اللهbut whoever relapses — those are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally.
God destroys usury, and makes alms grow.
God does not love any great disowner, transgressor.
Those who have believed, done righteous deeds, maintained the Contact, and given the purifying alms, have their reward with their Guardian; no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.
O you who have believed! guard yourselves toward God, and forsake what remains of usury, if you are believers.
يايها الذين ءامنوا اتقوا الله وذروا ما بقي من الربوا ان كنتم مومنينIf you do not do it, know then that it is a war from God and His messenger;
فان لم تفعلوا فاذنوا بحرب من الله ورسولهand if you turn back [to God], the principal of your goods belongs to you, without your doing wrong or being wronged.
وان تبتم فلكم رءوس امولكم لا تظلمون ولا تظلمونAnd if [the debtor] is in hardship, then a delay until ease;
وان كان ذو عسرة فنظرة الى ميسرةand that you remit it as charity is better for you, if you knew.
And guard yourselves against a day when you will be brought back to God,
واتقوا يوما ترجعون فيه الى اللهwhen every Self will be fully repaid for what it has earned, without being wronged.
O you who have believed! when you contract a debt between yourselves for an appointed term, put it in writing.
And let a scribe write it between you with justice,
وليكتب بينكم كاتب بالعدلand let no scribe refuse to write,
ولا ياب كاتب ان يكتبaccording to what God has taught him; let him write, then,
كما علمه الله فليكتبand let him dictate who owes the debt, and let him guard himself toward God, his Guardian, and not diminish anything of it.
And if he who owes the debt is foolish, or weak, or unable to dictate himself, let the one responsible for him dictate, then, with justice.
فان كان الذي عليه الحق سفيها او ضعيفا او لا يستطيع ان يمل هو فليملل وليه بالعدلAnd call two witnesses from among your men to witness it;
واستشهدوا شهيدين من رجالكمand if there are not two men, then a man and two women, from among those whose testimony you approve, so that if one of the two errs, the other may remind her.
And let not the witnesses refuse, when they are called.
And do not be weary of writing it down, small or large, until its term.
That is more equitable with God, more upright for testimony, and closer to not doubting — except if it is an immediate trade that you conduct among yourselves: no blame then upon you for not writing it down.
And take witnesses when you conduct a transaction among yourselves.
And let no harm be done to either the scribe or the witness.
And if you do, it is an overstepping on your part.
And guard yourselves toward God,
واتقوا اللهand God teaches you.
God is All-Knowing of all things.
And if you are on a journey, and you find no scribe, a pledge taken [suffices].
And if one of you trusts another, let him to whom the trust was given discharge his trust,
فان امن بعضكم بعضا فليود الذي اوتمن امنتهand let him guard himself toward God, his Guardian.
And do not hide testimony.
And whoever hides it has indeed a transgressive core.
God is, of what you do, All-Knowing.
To God belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth.
Whether you disclose what is within you, or hide it, God will call you to account for it; He forgives, then, whom He wills, and He punishes whom He wills.
God is capable of all things.
The messenger has believed in what has been revealed to him from his Guardian, and [likewise] the believers.
All have believed in God, His Agents, His scriptures, and His messengers:
كل ءامن بالله ومليكته وكتبه ورسله"We make no distinction between any of His messengers";
لا نفرق بين احد من رسلهand they said: "We have heard and we have obeyed.
Your forgiveness, our Guardian; to You is the destination."
God imposes upon no Self except its capacity.
To it what it has earned,
لها ما كسبتand against it what it has committed.
Our Guardian, do not hold us to account if we forget or if we err.
Our Guardian, and do not lay upon us a burden as You laid it upon those before us.
Our Guardian, and do not make us bear what we do not have the strength to bear.
And efface [our faults] for us,
واعف عناand forgive us,
واغفر لناand have benevolence on us.
You are our nearest Guarantor; help us, then, against the people who disown."
