۞

Al-Hajj

  • In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. O mankind, guard yourselves against your Guardian,i 1
  • for the tremor of the Hour is a tremendous thing. 1
  • The Day you see it, every woman with a child in her care will forget the child she was caring for, and every pregnant one will deliver her burden, and you will see mankind as if drunk, though they are not drunk — but the punishment of God is severe.i 2
  • And among mankind is he who disputes about God without knowledge and follows every rebellious Diverter, for whom it has been decreed that whoever takes him as an ally, he will misguide him and guide him to the punishment of the Blaze.i 4
  • O mankind, if you are in doubt about the Deployment, then indeed We created you from dust, then from a drop of seed, then from a clinging clot, then from a lump of flesh, formed and unformed, that We may make things clear to you.i 5
  • And We settle in the wombs whatever We will until a specified term, 5
  • then We bring you out as a child, that you may then reach your full maturity. 5
  • And among you is he who dies [early], and among you is he who is returned to the most decrepit age, so that he knows nothing after having known [much]. 5
  • And you see the earth barren, but when We send down water upon it, it stirs, swells, and grows every splendid kind. 5
  • That is because God is the Truth, He gives life to the dead, He is capable of all things, the Hour is coming — no doubt about it — and God will raise up those who are in the graves. 7
  • And among mankind is he who disputes about God without knowledge, without guidance, and without an illuminating Scripture, turning his side away in arrogance, to lead [others] astray from the way of God.i 9
  • For him is disgrace in the present life, 9
  • and We will make him taste, on the Day of Appearance, the punishment of the burning fire.i 9
  • That is for what your hands have sent forth; and God is not unjust to [His] the constrained. 10
  • And among mankind is he who obeys God in a distorted manner: if good befalls him, he is content with it, but if a trial befalls him, he turns back on his face — losing both the present life and the Hereafter.i 11
  • That is the manifest loss. 11
  • He calls upon, besides God, that which can neither harm him nor benefit him. 12
  • That is indeed far-reaching error — he calls upon 13
  • one whose harm is nearer than his benefit. What a wretched ally, and what a wretched companion! 13
  • Indeed, God admits those who believe and do righteous deeds into gardens beneath which rivers flow. 14
  • Indeed, God does what He wills. 14
  • Whoever thinks that God will never help him in the present life and the Hereafter, let him extend a link toward the sky, then let him withdraw from it, then let him wait to see whether his scheme removes what enrages him.i 15
  • Thus have We sent it down as clear signs, 16
  • and [know] that God guides whom He wills. 16
  • Those who have believed, the Reoriented, the Aspirants, the Helpers, the Magians, and those who ascribe partners to God — God will judge between them on the Day of Appearance.i 17
  • Indeed, God is witness over all things. 17
  • Have you not seen that to God prostrate whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth, the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the living beings, and many among mankind? 18
  • And for many [others], the punishment is justly due. 18
  • And whoever God humiliates has none to honor him. 18
  • Indeed, God does what He wills. 18
  • These are two disputing parties who have disputed concerning their Guardian. 19
  • Those who deny will have garments of fire cut out for them; boiling water will be poured over their heads, melting what is in their bellies as well as their skins. 20
  • And for them are maces of iron. 21
  • Every time they wish to come out of it, out of anguish, they will be returned to it: 22
  • "Taste the punishment of the burning fire!" 22
  • Indeed, God admits those who believe and do righteous deeds into gardens beneath which rivers flow; they will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearls, 23
  • and their garments therein will be of silk. 23
  • And they were guided to the good in speech, 24
  • and they were guided to the path of the Praiseworthy. 24
  • Indeed, those who deny and turn [people] away from the way of God and from the Sacred Mosque, which We made for the people equally, whether one dwells there or is passing through — 25
  • and whoever intends therein a deviation through injustice, We will make him taste a painful punishment. 25
  • And remember when We established for Ibrahim the site of the House: "Do not associate anything with Me,i 26
  • and purify My House for those who frequent it, those who maintain it, and those who bow in service and submit [in allegiance]."i 26
  • And proclaim to mankind the Hajj: they will come to you on foot and on every lean mount, coming from every distant, deep-cut path, to witness the benefits [granted] to them and to mention the name of God on known days over the grazing livestock He has provided them.i 28
  • So eat of it and feed the distressed, the poor. 28
  • Then let them put an end to their unkempt state, fulfill their commitments, and frequent the sovereign House.i 29
  • That is so. 30
  • And whoever magnifies the sacred prohibitions of God, it is better for him with his Guardian. 30
  • And lawful to you is the livestock, except what is recited to you: 30
  • so avoid the defilement of idols, and avoid false speech, wholly turned toward God, associating nothing with Him. 31
  • And whoever associates [others] with God, it is as though he had fallen from the sky, and the birds snatch him away, or the wind sweeps him down into a far-off place. 31
  • That is so. 32
  • And whoever magnifies the perceptible markers of God — that is part of the guardedness of the Cores.i 32
  • For you in them are benefits until a specified term; then their place of release is at the sovereign House.i 33
  • And for every community We have assigned a beneficent practice, that they may mention the name of God over the grazing livestock He has provided them.i 34
  • So your God is one God. 34
  • So to Him alone be true. 34
  • And give good news to the humble, whose Cores tremble when God is mentioned, who are patient over what befalls them, who maintain the Contact, and who spend from what We have provided them. 35
  • And the sacrificial animals — We have made them for you among the perceptible markers of God; in them is good for you.i 36
  • So mention the name of God over them, while they are lined up in rows; 36
  • then when their flanks fall [to the ground], eat of them and feed the one who is content without asking and the one who asks. 36
  • Thus have We subjected them to you, that you may be grateful. 36
  • Neither their meat nor their blood reaches God, but the guardedness from you reaches Him. 37
  • Thus has He subjected them to you, that you may magnify God for having guided you. 37
  • And give good news to those who do good. 37
  • Indeed, God defends those who believe. 38
  • Indeed, God does not love any grand traitor, grand denier. 38
  • Permission is given to those who are being fought, because they have been wronged — 39
  • and God is indeed able to give them victory. 39
  • those who were expelled from their homes without right, only because they said, "Our Guardian is God." 40
  • And were it not for God's defense of people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished hermitages, churches, synagogues, and mosques wherein the name of God is much mentioned.i 40
  • And God will surely help whoever helps Him — 40
  • indeed, God is strong, the All-Mighty. 40
  • those who, if We establish them in the land, maintain the Contact, render the purifying alms, enjoin what is recognized [by custom], and forbid what is disavowed. 41
  • And to God belongs the outcome of all affairs. 41
  • And if they deny you, before them the people of Nuh, the Recidivists [Aad], the Depleters [Thamud], the people of Ibrahim, the people of Lut, and the people of Madyan denied —i 44
  • and Moussa too was denied.i 44
  • So I granted respite to those who denied, then I seized them: 44
  • and how was My reproof! 44
  • How many a city have We destroyed while it was committing injustice: they now stand empty despite their edifices, with an abandoned well and a lofty, deserted palace! 45
  • Have they not traveled through the land, so as to have Cores with which to reason, or ears with which to hear? 46
  • For it is not the eyes that are blind, but rather the Cores that are within the breasts. 46
  • And they urge you to hasten the punishment, 47
  • though God will never fail His promise. 47
  • And indeed, a day with your Guardian is like a thousand years of those you count. 47
  • And how many a city to which I granted respite while it was committing injustice, then I seized it — 48
  • and to Me is the final destination. 48
  • Say, "O mankind, I am only a clear warner to you." 49
  • So those who believe and do righteous deeds will have forgiveness and generous provision. 50
  • But those who strive against Our signs, seeking to thwart [them], those are the companions of the Blaze. 51
  • And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he had a wish, the Diverter would insert something into it. God then transcribes what the Diverter inserts, and He affirms His signs — God is all-knowing, wise — so that this transcription may be a trial for those in whose Cores is a sickness and whose Cores are hardened.i 53
  • And indeed, the wrongdoers are plunged in extreme division.i 53
  • And so that those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Guardian, and believe in it, and their Cores humbly submit to it. 54
  • And indeed, God surely guides those who believe to a straight path. 54
  • And those who deny will not cease to be in doubt of it until the Hour comes upon them unexpectedly, or there comes to them the punishment of a barren day. 55
  • The dominion, that Day, belongs to God. 56
  • He will judge between them. 56
  • So those who believed and did righteous deeds will be in gardens of blessing. 56
  • And those who denied and rejected Our signs as lies — those will have a humiliating punishment. 57
  • And those who emigrated in the way of God and then were killed or died — God will surely provide them with a good provision. 58
  • And indeed, God is surely the best of providers. 58
  • He will surely admit them to an entrance with which they will be pleased. 59
  • And indeed, God is all-knowing, thoughtful. 59
  • That is so. 60
  • And whoever retaliates in kind to what he was made to suffer, and then is aggressed against again — God will surely help him. 60
  • Indeed, God is surely the One who pardons, the Most Forgiving. 60
  • That is because God causes the night to enter into the day and the day to enter into the night, and because God is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. 61
  • That is because God is the Truth, and what they invoke besides Him is falsehood, and because God is the Most High, the Great.i 62
  • Have you not seen that God sends down water from the sky, and the earth becomes green? 63
  • Indeed, God is subtle, all-aware. 63
  • To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. 64
  • And indeed, God is surely the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy. 64
  • Have you not seen that God has subjected to you whatever is on the earth, and the ship which sails through the sea by His command? 65
  • And He withholds the sky from falling upon the earth, except by His permission. 65
  • Indeed, God is, to mankind, full of kindness, most benevolent. 65
  • And it is He who gave you life, then will cause you to die, 66
  • then will give you life again. 66
  • Indeed, man is surely a great denier. 66
  • For every community We have assigned a beneficent practice which it carries out. 67
  • So let them not dispute with you concerning the matter, 67
  • and call to your Guardian, 67
  • for you are surely upon straight guidance. 67
  • And if they dispute with you, say, "God knows best what you do. 68
  • God will judge between you on the Day of Appearance concerning that in which you used to differ."i 69
  • Do you not know that God knows whatever is in the heaven and the earth? 70
  • Indeed, that is in a record:i 70
  • indeed, that is easy for God. 70
  • And they obey, besides God, that for which He has sent down no authority and of which they have no knowledge. 71
  • And for the wrongdoers there is no helper. 71
  • And when Our clear signs are recited to them, you recognize on the faces of those who deny the disavowal; they nearly assault those who recite Our signs to them. 72
  • Say, "Shall I inform you of something worse than that? 72
  • The Fire, which God has promised to those who deny — 72
  • and how wretched a destination!" 72
  • O mankind! An example has been put forth, so listen to it: 73
  • indeed, those you invoke besides God will never create a fly, even if they gathered together for that. 73
  • And if the fly should snatch away something from them, they could not recover it from it. 73
  • Weak are the seeker and the sought! 73
  • They have not appraised God with true appraisal of Him. 74
  • Indeed, God is surely strong, the All-Mighty. 74
  • God chooses from the Agents messengers, and from mankind [as well].i 75
  • Indeed, God is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. 75
  • He knows what is before them and what is behind them. 76
  • And to God all matters return. 76
  • O you who believe! Kneel, prostrate, obey your Guardian, and do good, that you may succeed. 77
  • And strive for God with the striving due to Him. 78
  • It is He who has chosen you, 78
  • and He has not placed upon you, in the Law, any hardship — 78
  • [it is] the way of your father Ibrahim.i 78
  • It is He who named you the true [servants of God] before, and in this [Recitation], so that the Messenger may be a witness over you, and that you may be witnesses over mankind. 78
  • So maintain the Contact and render the purifying alms, 78
  • and hold fast to God: 78
  • He is your Protector — 78
  • what an excellent Protector, 78
  • and what an excellent helper! 78
