Sourate Luqman (31) unvowelled

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif, Lam, Mim.i 1

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم الم

These are the signs of the Scripture full of wisdom, a guidance and benevolence for the doers of good, those who maintain the Contact, give the purifying alms, and who have certainty of the Hereafter.i 4

تلك ءايت الكتب الحكيم هدى ورحمة للمحسنين الذين يقيمون الصلوة ويوتون الزكوة وهم بالءاخرة هم يوقنون

Those are upon guidance from their Guardian, 5

اوليك على هدى من ربهم

and it is they who are successful. 5

واوليك هم المفلحون

And among people is he who buys distracting talk, to lead [others] astray from the way of God without knowledge, and to take it in mockery; 6

ومن الناس من يشتري لهو الحديث ليضل عن سبيل الله بغير علم ويتخذها هزوا

those will have a humiliating punishment. 6

اوليك لهم عذاب مهين

And when Our signs are recited to him, he turns away in arrogance, as though he had not heard them, as though there were deafness in his ears: 7

واذا تتلى عليه ءايتنا ولى مستكبرا كان لم يسمعها كان في اذنيه وقرا

so give him news of a painful punishment. 7

فبشره بعذاب اليم

Those who believed and did righteous deeds will have the gardens of blessing, abiding therein forever —i 9

ان الذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت لهم جنت النعيم خلدين فيها

a true promise of God; 9

وعد الله حقا

and He is the All-Powerful, the Wise. 9

وهو العزيز الحكيم

He created the heavens without pillars 10

خلق السموت بغير عمد

that you can see; 10

ترونها

and He placed on the earth firm anchors, lest it shake with you, and He scattered upon it every kind of living being;i 10

والقى في الارض روسي ان تميد بكم وبث فيها من كل دابة

and We sent down water from the sky, and caused every generous kind [of plant] to grow in it. 10

وانزلنا من السماء ماء فانبتنا فيها من كل زوج كريم

This is God's creation: 11

هذا خلق الله

so show Me what those you obey besides Him have created. 11

فاروني ماذا خلق الذين من دونه

The wrongdoers are rather in manifest error. 11

بل الظلمون في ضلل مبين

And We certainly gave Luqman wisdom: "Be grateful to God"; 12

ولقد ءاتينا لقمن الحكمة ان اشكر لله

and whoever is grateful is grateful only for himself, 12

ومن يشكر فانما يشكر لنفسه

and whoever denies [that blessing] — God is self-sufficient, praiseworthy. 12

ومن كفر فان الله غني حميد

And [recall] when Luqman said to his son, while exhorting him, "O my son, do not associate [any partner] with God; 13

واذ قال لقمن لابنه وهو يعظه يبنى لا تشرك بالله

association is certainly a great injustice." 13

ان الشرك لظلم عظيم

And We enjoined upon man [kindness] toward his parents — 14

ووصينا الانسن بولديه

his mother carried him, weakness upon weakness, 14

حملته امه وهنا على وهن

and his weaning is completed within the two years that follow — :i 14

وفصله في عامين

"Be grateful to Me and to your parents; 14

ان اشكر لي ولولديك

to Me is the final return." 14

الى المصير

But if they press you to associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them; 15

وان جهداك على ان تشرك بي ما ليس لك به علم فلا تطعهما

but accompany them in the present life in a recognized manner,i 15

وصاحبهما في الدنيا معروفا

and follow the path of one who turns to Me [in repentance]; 15

واتبع سبيل من اناب الى

then to Me is your return, and I will inform you of what you used to do. 15

ثم الى مرجعكم فانبيكم بما كنتم تعملون

"O my son, indeed if it should be the weight of a mustard seed, and should be in a rock, or in the heavens, or in the earth, God will bring it forth, 16

يبنى انها ان تك مثقال حبة من خردل فتكن في صخرة او في السموت او في الارض يات بها الله

for God is Subtle, Aware. 16

ان الله لطيف خبير

O my son, maintain the Contact, 17

يبنى اقم الصلوة

enjoin what is recognized,i 17

وامر بالمعروف

forbid what is disavowed,i 17

وانه عن المنكر

and be patient over what befalls you: 17

واصبر على ما اصابك

that is indeed among matters requiring resolve. 17

ان ذلك من عزم الامور

And do not turn your cheek away from people [in disdain], 18

ولا تصعر خدك للناس

nor walk upon the earth exultantly: 18

ولا تمش في الارض مرحا

God certainly does not love any arrogant boaster. 18

ان الله لا يحب كل مختال فخور

Be moderate in your pace, 19

واقصد في مشيك

and lower your voice: 19

واغضض من صوتك

for the least recognizable of voices is the voice of donkeys."i 19

ان انكر الاصوت لصوت الحمير

Have you not seen that God has subjected to you what is in the heavens and what is on the earth, and has completed His favors upon you, apparent and hidden? 20

الم تروا ان الله سخر لكم ما في السموت وما في الارض واسبغ عليكم نعمه ظهرة وباطنة

And among people is he who disputes about God without knowledge, without guidance, and without an illuminating Scripture.i 20

ومن الناس من يجدل في الله بغير علم ولا هدى ولا كتب منير

And when it is said to them, "Follow what God has sent down," 21

واذا قيل لهم اتبعوا ما انزل الله

they say, "We rather follow what we found our ancestors upon." 21

قالوا بل نتبع ما وجدنا عليه ءاباءنا

What, even if the Diverter was calling them to the punishment of the Blaze?i 21

اولو كان الشيطن يدعوهم الى عذاب السعير

And whoever devotes himself to God with integrity, while being virtuous, has certainly grasped the firmest handhold;i 22

ومن يسلم وجهه الى الله وهو محسن فقد استمسك بالعروة الوثقى

and to God is the outcome of all things. 22

والى الله عقبة الامور

And whoever denies, let not his denial grieve you: 23

ومن كفر فلا يحزنك كفره

to Us is their return, and We will then inform them of what they did — 23

الينا مرجعهم فننبيهم بما عملوا

God is certainly All-Knowing of what is in the chests. 23

ان الله عليم بذات الصدور

We grant them a brief enjoyment, then We will compel them toward a harsh punishment. 24

نمتعهم قليلا ثم نضطرهم الى عذاب غليظ

And if you ask them, "Who created the heavens and the earth?" they will certainly say, "God"; 25

ولين سالتهم من خلق السموت والارض ليقولن الله

say, "Praise be to God!" 25

قل الحمد لله

But most of them do not know. 25

بل اكثرهم لا يعلمون

To God belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth; 26

لله ما في السموت والارض

God is certainly self-sufficient, praiseworthy. 26

ان الله هو الغني الحميد

And if whatever trees are on the earth were pens, and the sea, extended by seven seas after it, [were ink], the words of God would not be exhausted: 27

ولو انما في الارض من شجرة اقلم والبحر يمده من بعده سبعة ابحر ما نفدت كلمت الله

God is certainly All-Powerful, Wise. 27

ان الله عزيز حكيم

Your creation and your deployment are but as [that of] a single Self;i 28

ما خلقكم ولا بعثكم الا كنفس وحدة

God is certainly the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. 28

ان الله سميع بصير

Have you not seen that God makes the night pass into the day, and makes the day pass into the night, and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running to an appointed term, and that God is Aware of what you do? 29

الم تر ان الله يولج اليل في النهار ويولج النهار في اليل وسخر الشمس والقمر كل يجري الى اجل مسمى وان الله بما تعملون خبير

That is because God is the Truth, and what you invoke besides Him is falsehood, and because God is the Most High, the Great.i 30

ذلك بان الله هو الحق وان ما يدعون من دونه البطل وان الله هو العلي الكبير

Have you not seen that the ships sail on the sea by the favor of God, that He may show you some of His signs? 31

الم تر ان الفلك تجري في البحر بنعمت الله ليريكم من ءايته

There are certainly in that signs for every steadfast, grateful being. 31

ان في ذلك لءايت لكل صبار شكور

And when a wave covers them like shadows, they call upon God, devoting the Law exclusively to Him;i 32

واذا غشيهم موج كالظلل دعوا الله مخلصين له الدين

but when He brings them safely to land, some of them remain moderate [in gratitude]; 32

فلما نجىهم الى البر فمنهم مقتصد

and none denies Our signs except every treacherous, great denier. 32

وما يجحد بايتنا الا كل ختار كفور

O mankind, be mindful of your Guardian, and fear a day when no father will avail his child, nor any child avail his father at all. 33

يايها الناس اتقوا ربكم واخشوا يوما لا يجزي والد عن ولده ولا مولود هو جاز عن والده شيا

God's promise is certainly true: 33

ان وعد الله حق

so do not let the present life deceive you, 33

فلا تغرنكم الحيوة الدنيا

and do not let the great deceiver deceive you about God. 33

ولا يغرنكم بالله الغرور

God certainly has knowledge of the Hour, 34

ان الله عنده علم الساعة

and sends down the rain, 34

وينزل الغيث

and knows what is in the wombs; 34

ويعلم ما في الارحام

and no Self knows what it will earn tomorrow, 34

وما تدري نفس ماذا تكسب غدا

and no Self knows in what land it will die; 34

وما تدري نفس باى ارض تموت

God is certainly All-Knowing, Aware. 34

ان الله عليم خبير
