Sourate Ya-Sin (36) unvowelled

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Ya-Sin.i 1

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم يس

By the Recitation full of wisdom, you are truly among the envoys,i 4

والقرءان الحكيم انك لمن المرسلين على صرط مستقيم

a revelation sent down from the All-Powerful, the Benevolent, so that you may warn a people whose ancestors were not warned, and who are therefore heedless.i 6

تنزيل العزيز الرحيم لتنذر قوما ما انذر ءاباوهم فهم غفلون

The verdict has proven true against most of them: they do not believe. 7

لقد حق القول على اكثرهم فهم لا يومنون

We have placed shackles on their necks, reaching up to their chins, so that their heads are held back. 8

انا جعلنا في اعنقهم اغللا فهي الى الاذقان فهم مقمحون

And We have placed a barrier before them and a barrier behind them, and We have covered them over, so they do not see. 9

وجعلنا من بين ايديهم سدا ومن خلفهم سدا فاغشينهم فهم لا يبصرون

It is the same to them whether you warn them or do not warn them: they do not believe. 10

وسواء عليهم ءانذرتهم ام لم تنذرهم لا يومنون

You can only warn usefully one who follows the Reminder and fears the All-Benevolent unseen: give him good news of forgiveness and a generous reward. 11

انما تنذر من اتبع الذكر وخشي الرحمن بالغيب فبشره بمغفرة واجر كريم

It is We, We alone, who give life to the dead, and We record what they put forth and the traces they leave behind. 12

انا نحن نحي الموتى ونكتب ما قدموا وءاثرهم

And everything, We have counted it in a clear register. 12

وكل شىء احصينه في امام مبين

Set before them, as an example, the people of the town: when the envoys came to it, when We sent two [messengers] to them, and they called them liars; so We reinforced them with a third, and they said: "We are indeed sent to you." 14

واضرب لهم مثلا اصحب القرية اذ جاءها المرسلون اذ ارسلنا اليهم اثنين فكذبوهما فعززنا بثالث فقالوا انا اليكم مرسلون

They said: "You are nothing but humans like us; the All-Benevolent has sent nothing down; you are only lying." 15

قالوا ما انتم الا بشر مثلنا وما انزل الرحمن من شىء ان انتم الا تكذبون

They said: "Our Guardian knows that we are indeed sent to you; and it is incumbent upon us only to deliver the message clearly." 17

قالوا ربنا يعلم انا اليكم لمرسلون وما علينا الا البلغ المبين

They said: "We see in you a bad omen. If you do not stop, we will surely banish you, and a painful punishment from us will touch you." 18

قالوا انا تطيرنا بكم لين لم تنتهوا لنرجمنكم وليمسنكم منا عذاب اليم

They replied: "Your omen lies with yourselves. Is it because you are reminded [of the truth]? 19

قالوا طيركم معكم اين ذكرتم

Rather, you are a people who overstep all bounds." 19

بل انتم قوم مسرفون

And a man came hurrying from the farthest end of the Capital. 20

وجاء من اقصا المدينة رجل يسعى

He said: "O my people, follow the envoys; follow those who ask no reward of you, and who are rightly guided. 21

قال يقوم اتبعوا المرسلين اتبعوا من لا يسلكم اجرا وهم مهتدون

And why should I not obey the One who created me, and to whom you will be brought back? 22

وما لي لا اعبد الذي فطرني واليه ترجعون

Should I take, besides Him, deities? If the All-Benevolent intends harm for me, their intercession will not avail me at all, nor will they save me. 23

ءاتخذ من دونه ءالهة ان يردن الرحمن بضر لا تغن عني شفعتهم شيا ولا ينقذون

I would then truly be in manifest error. 24

اني اذا لفي ضلل مبين

I have indeed believed in your Guardian: so listen to me." 25

اني ءامنت بربكم فاسمعون

It was said [to him]: "Enter the Garden." 26

قيل ادخل الجنة

He said: "If only my people knew for what my Guardian has forgiven me, and made me one of the honored ones!" 27

قال يليت قومي يعلمون بما غفر لي ربي وجعلني من المكرمين

And We did not send down upon his people, after him, any army from the sky, nor did We need to send one down. 28

وما انزلنا على قومه من بعده من جند من السماء وما كنا منزلين

It was but a single cry, and there they were, extinguished. 29

ان كانت الا صيحة وحدة فاذا هم خمدون

What regret for the obedient ones! 30

يحسرة على العباد

No messenger ever came to them but they mocked him. 30

ما ياتيهم من رسول الا كانوا به يستهزءون

Do they not see how many generations We destroyed before them, [generations] that will not return to them? 31

الم يروا كم اهلكنا قبلهم من القرون انهم اليهم لا يرجعون

All of them, every single one, will be gathered, brought before Us. 32

وان كل لما جميع لدينا محضرون

A sign for them: the dead earth, which We bring to life, and from which We bring forth grain, so that they eat from it. 33

وءاية لهم الارض الميتة احيينها واخرجنا منها حبا فمنه ياكلون

And We placed therein gardens of palm trees and vines, and We caused springs to gush forth in it, so that they may eat from its fruit — and it was not their hands that produced it. 35

وجعلنا فيها جنت من نخيل واعنب وفجرنا فيها من العيون لياكلوا من ثمره وما عملته ايديهم

Will they not then be grateful? 35

افلا يشكرون

Glory be to the One who created all the pairs, from what the earth grows, from themselves, and from what they do not know. 36

سبحن الذي خلق الازوج كلها مما تنبت الارض ومن انفسهم ومما لا يعلمون

A sign for them: the night, from which We strip away the day, and there they are, plunged into darkness. 37

وءاية لهم اليل نسلخ منه النهار فاذا هم مظلمون

And the sun glides along a stable orbit that is its own and never varies. 38

والشمس تجري لمستقر لها

That is the measure set by the All-Powerful, the All-Knowing.i 38

ذلك تقدير العزيز العليم

And the moon, We have set for it stations, until it returns like an old curved palm-stalk. 39

والقمر قدرنه منازل حتى عاد كالعرجون القديم

It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor for the night to outrun the day. 40

لا الشمس ينبغي لها ان تدرك القمر ولا اليل سابق النهار

Each floats along in an orbit. 40

وكل في فلك يسبحون

A sign for them: We carried their offspring in the laden ship, and We created for them, in its likeness, what they ride.i 42

وءاية لهم انا حملنا ذريتهم في الفلك المشحون وخلقنا لهم من مثله ما يركبون

And if We willed, We would drown them; then there would be no help for them, nor would they be saved, except by a benevolence from Us, and enjoyment for a time. 44

وان نشا نغرقهم فلا صريخ لهم ولا هم ينقذون الا رحمة منا ومتعا الى حين

And when it is said to them: "Guard yourselves against what is before you and what is behind you, so that you may receive benevolence," 45

واذا قيل لهم اتقوا ما بين ايديكم وما خلفكم لعلكم ترحمون

not a single sign, among the signs of their Guardian, comes to them but they turn away from it. 46

وما تاتيهم من ءاية من ءايت ربهم الا كانوا عنها معرضين

And when it is said to them: "Spend from what God has provided you," those who deny say to those who have believed: "Shall we feed one whom God, if He willed, would feed Himself? You are only in manifest error." 47

واذا قيل لهم انفقوا مما رزقكم الله قال الذين كفروا للذين ءامنوا انطعم من لو يشاء الله اطعمه ان انتم الا في ضلل مبين

And they say: "When will this promise be, if you are truthful?" 48

ويقولون متى هذا الوعد ان كنتم صدقين

They await nothing but a single cry that will seize them while they are disputing with one another. 49

ما ينظرون الا صيحة وحدة تاخذهم وهم يخصمون

Then they will not be able to make any bequest, nor will they return to their people. 50

فلا يستطيعون توصية ولا الى اهلهم يرجعون

And the Trumpet will be blown, and there they are, rushing from their graves to their Guardian. 51

ونفخ في الصور فاذا هم من الاجداث الى ربهم ينسلون

They will say: "Woe to us! Who has raised us up from our resting place? 52

قالوا يويلنا من بعثنا من مرقدنا

This is what the All-Benevolent promised, and the envoys spoke the truth." 52

هذا ما وعد الرحمن وصدق المرسلون

It will be but a single cry, and there they are, all together, brought before Us. 53

ان كانت الا صيحة وحدة فاذا هم جميع لدينا محضرون

This day, no Self will be wronged in the least, and you will be repaid only for what you used to do. 54

فاليوم لا تظلم نفس شيا ولا تجزون الا ما كنتم تعملون

The companions of the Garden will, this day, be occupied in delight, they and their spouses, in the shade, reclining upon couches. 56

ان اصحب الجنة اليوم في شغل فكهون هم وازوجهم في ظلل على الارايك متكون

They will have fruit therein. 57

لهم فيها فكهة

And they will have whatever they call for. Peace! 58

ولهم ما يدعون سلم

A word from a Benevolent Guardian. 58

قولا من رب رحيم

"Stand apart today, O severed! 59

وامتزوا اليوم ايها المجرمون

Did I not enjoin upon you, O children of Adam, not to obey the Diverter — he is indeed a manifest enemy to you — and to obey Me alone?i 61

الم اعهد اليكم يبني ءادم ان لا تعبدوا الشيطن انه لكم عدو مبين وان اعبدوني

This is a straight path. 61

هذا صرط مستقيم

Yet he did lead astray a great many of you. 62

ولقد اضل منكم جبلا كثيرا

Did you not then reason? 62

افلم تكونوا تعقلون

This is Jahannam, which you were promised. Burn in it today, for having concealed [the truth]." 64

هذه جهنم التي كنتم توعدون اصلوها اليوم بما كنتم تكفرون

This day, We seal their mouths; their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will bear witness to what they used to earn. 65

اليوم نختم على افوههم وتكلمنا ايديهم وتشهد ارجلهم بما كانوا يكسبون

And if We willed, We would blot out their eyes; then they would rush toward the path, but how would they see? 66

ولو نشاء لطمسنا على اعينهم فاستبقوا الصرط فانى يبصرون

And if We willed, We would freeze them in their places, and they would be able neither to go forward nor to return. 67

ولو نشاء لمسخنهم على مكانتهم فما استطعوا مضيا ولا يرجعون

And whomever We grant long life, We reverse in creation. 68

ومن نعمره ننكسه في الخلق

Will they not then reason?i 68

افلا يعقلون

We did not teach him beguiling rhetoric; it does not befit him.i 69

وما علمنه الشعر وما ينبغي له

It is nothing but a Reminder and a clear Recitation, so as to warn whoever is alive, and so that the verdict may prove true against those who deny.i 70

ان هو الا ذكر وقرءان مبين لينذر من كان حيا ويحق القول على الكفرين

Do they not see that We have created for them, from what Our hands have made, livestock which they own? 71

اولم يروا انا خلقنا لهم مما عملت ايدينا انعما فهم لها ملكون

We have made them subservient to them: some serve as their mounts, and some they eat. 72

وذللنها لهم فمنها ركوبهم ومنها ياكلون

And they have in them benefits and drinks. 73

ولهم فيها منفع ومشارب

Will they not then be grateful? 73

افلا يشكرون

And they have taken, besides God, deities, hoping to be helped. They cannot help them, though they are, for them, a mobilized army. 75

واتخذوا من دون الله ءالهة لعلهم ينصرون لا يستطيعون نصرهم وهم لهم جند محضرون

So let their words not grieve you. 76

فلا يحزنك قولهم

We know what they conceal and what they proclaim. 76

انا نعلم ما يسرون وما يعلنون

Does man not see that We created him from a drop of fluid, and yet he is a manifest disputer? 77

اولم ير الانسن انا خلقنه من نطفة فاذا هو خصيم مبين

He sets forth for Us an example, forgetting his own creation. 78

وضرب لنا مثلا ونسي خلقه

He says: "Who will give life to the bones once they are decayed?" 78

قال من يحي العظم وهي رميم

Say: "He who brought them into being the first time will give them life; and He is All-Knowing of all creation." 79

قل يحييها الذي انشاها اول مرة وهو بكل خلق عليم

He who made for you fire out of the green tree, and see, you kindle from it. 80

الذي جعل لكم من الشجر الاخضر نارا فاذا انتم منه توقدون

Is not the One who created the heavens and the earth able to create the like of them? 81

اوليس الذي خلق السموت والارض بقدر على ان يخلق مثلهم

Yes indeed! And He is the Creator, the All-Knowing. 81

بلى وهو الخلق العليم

His command, when He wills a thing, is only to say to it: "Be," 82

انما امره اذا اراد شيا ان يقول له كن

and it is. 82

فيكون

So glory be to the One in whose hand is the dominion of all things, and to whom you will be brought back. 83

فسبحن الذي بيده ملكوت كل شىء واليه ترجعون
