Do Not Lose Heart
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. The descent of the Scripture comes from God, the All-Powerful, the Wise.
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم تنزيل الكتب من الله العزيز الحكيمWe have sent down to you the Scripture in truth; so obey God, devoting the Law exclusively to Him.
انا انزلنا اليك الكتب بالحق فاعبد الله مخلصا له الدينIn truth, the pure and exclusive Law belongs to God.
الا لله الدين الخالصAnd those who take allies besides Him [say]: "We only obey them so that they may bring us nearer to God, as near as can be";
والذين اتخذوا من دونه اولياء ما نعبدهم الا ليقربونا الى الله زلفىGod will indeed judge between them concerning that in which they differ.
ان الله يحكم بينهم في ما هم فيه يختلفونGod does not guide one who is a liar, a great disowner [of the truth].
ان الله لا يهدي من هو كذب كفارHad God wanted to take a child, He would have chosen what He wills from what He creates;
لو اراد الله ان يتخذ ولدا لاصطفى مما يخلق ما يشاءglory be to Him —
سبحنهHe is God, the One, the Overpowering.
هو الله الوحد القهارHe created the heavens and the earth in truth;
خلق السموت والارض بالحقHe wraps the night around the day, and wraps the day around the night;
يكور اليل على النهار ويكور النهار على اليلHe has subjected the sun and the moon,
وسخر الشمس والقمرeach running to an appointed term.
كل يجري لاجل مسمىIs He not the All-Powerful, the Great Forgiver?
الا هو العزيز الغفرHe created you from a single Self, then brought forth from it its spouse;
خلقكم من نفس وحدة ثم جعل منها زوجهاand He sent down for you, among the cattle, eight pairs;
وانزل لكم من الانعم ثمنية ازوجHe creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, in three darknesses;
يخلقكم في بطون امهتكم خلقا من بعد خلق في ظلمت ثلثthat is God, your Guardian; to Him belongs the dominion;
ذلكم الله ربكم له الملكthere is no deity but Him;
لا اله الا هوhow then are you turned away?
فانى تصرفونIf you disown, God is Self-Sufficient, beyond you;
ان تكفروا فان الله غني عنكمand He does not approve of disowning for His obedient ones;
ولا يرضى لعباده الكفرbut if you are grateful, He approves it for you.
وان تشكروا يرضه لكمNo bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another;
ولا تزر وازرة وزر اخرىthen to your Guardian is your return, and He will inform you of what you used to do.
ثم الى ربكم مرجعكم فينبيكم بما كنتم تعملونHe is indeed All-Knowing of what the chests contain.
انه عليم بذات الصدورWhen harm touches the human being, he calls upon his Guardian, turning back to Him;
واذا مس الانسن ضر دعا ربه منيبا اليهthen, when He grants him a blessing from Himself, he forgets what he used to call upon before, and sets up equals to God, to lead astray from His path.
ثم اذا خوله نعمة منه نسي ما كان يدعوا اليه من قبل وجعل لله اندادا ليضل عن سبيلهSay: "Enjoy your disowning a little; you are indeed among the companions of the Fire."
قل تمتع بكفرك قليلا انك من اصحب النارHe who is devoted through the hours of the night, prostrating and standing, fearing the last life and hoping for the benevolence of his Guardian —
امن هو قنت ءاناء اليل ساجدا وقايما يحذر الءاخرة ويرجوا رحمة ربهsay: "Are those who know equal to those who do not know?"
قل هل يستوي الذين يعلمون والذين لا يعلمونOnly the possessors of intelligence take heed.
انما يتذكر اولوا الالببSay: "O My obedient ones who believe, guard yourselves before your Guardian;
قل يعباد الذين ءامنوا اتقوا ربكمfor those who do good in the present life there is good;
للذين احسنوا في هذه الدنيا حسنةand God's earth is vast;
وارض الله وسعةthe patient will be given their reward in full, without count."
انما يوفى الصبرون اجرهم بغير حسابSay: "I have been commanded to obey God, devoting the Law exclusively to Him, and I have been commanded to be the first of those true to Him alone."
قل اني امرت ان اعبد الله مخلصا له الدين وامرت لان اكون اول المسلمينSay: "I indeed fear, if I disobey my Guardian, the punishment of an immense day."
قل اني اخاف ان عصيت ربي عذاب يوم عظيمSay: "It is God I obey, devoting my Law exclusively to Him;
قل الله اعبد مخلصا له دينيso obey whatever you wish besides Him."
فاعبدوا ما شيتم من دونهSay: "The losers are those who will have lost themselves and their families on the Day of Appearance;
قل ان الخسرين الذين خسروا انفسهم واهليهم يوم القيمةis that not the manifest loss?"
الا ذلك هو الخسران المبينThey will have, above them, canopies of fire, and beneath them, likewise;
لهم من فوقهم ظلل من النار ومن تحتهم ظللit is by this that God frightens His obedient ones:
ذلك يخوف الله به عباده"O My obedient ones, guard yourselves before Me!"
يعباد فاتقونAnd those who avoid obeying the Tyrant, and turn back to God, will have the good news.
والذين اجتنبوا الطغوت ان يعبدوها وانابوا الى الله لهم البشرىSo give good news to My obedient ones who listen to the word and follow the best of it;
فبشر عباد الذين يستمعون القول فيتبعون احسنهthose are the ones God has guided,
اوليك الذين هدىهم اللهand those are the possessors of intelligence.
واوليك هم اولوا الالببHe against whom the word of punishment has proven true — will you save him who is in the Fire?
افمن حق عليه كلمة العذاب افانت تنقذ من في النارBut those who guarded themselves before their Guardian will have high chambers, above which other chambers are built, beneath which rivers flow;
لكن الذين اتقوا ربهم لهم غرف من فوقها غرف مبنية تجري من تحتها الانهرa promise of God —
وعد اللهGod does not fail His promise.
لا يخلف الله الميعادHave you not seen that God sends down water from the sky, and channels it as springs in the earth, then brings forth with it crops of varying colors; then they wither, and you see them yellowed; then He turns them to debris?
الم تر ان الله انزل من السماء ماء فسلكه ينبيع في الارض ثم يخرج به زرعا مختلفا الونه ثم يهيج فترىه مصفرا ثم يجعله حطماThere is surely in that a reminder for the possessors of intelligence.
ان في ذلك لذكرى لاولي الالببHe whose chest God has opened to true adherence [to Him], so that he is upon a light from his Guardian —
افمن شرح الله صدره للاسلم فهو على نور من ربهso woe to those whose cores are hardened against the remembrance of God!
فويل للقسية قلوبهم من ذكر اللهThose are in manifest error.
اوليك في ضلل مبينGod has sent down the most beautiful of discourse, a Scripture of verses corresponding to one another, in couplets,
الله نزل احسن الحديث كتبا متشبها مثانيat which the skins of those who fear their Guardian shiver; then their skins and their cores soften toward the remembrance of God;
تقشعر منه جلود الذين يخشون ربهم ثم تلين جلودهم وقلوبهم الى ذكر اللهthat is the guidance of God, by which He guides whom He wills;
ذلك هدى الله يهدي به من يشاءand whoever God sends astray has no guide.
ومن يضلل الله فما له من هادHe who shields himself with his face from the worst punishment on the Day of Appearance —
افمن يتقي بوجهه سوء العذاب يوم القيمةand it will be said to the wrongdoers: "Taste what you used to earn."
وقيل للظلمين ذوقوا ما كنتم تكسبونThose before them denied, and the punishment came to them from where they did not perceive;
كذب الذين من قبلهم فاتىهم العذاب من حيث لا يشعرونGod made them taste disgrace in the present life,
فاذاقهم الله الخزي في الحيوة الدنياand the punishment of the last life is greater still, if only they knew.
ولعذاب الءاخرة اكبر لو كانوا يعلمونWe have certainly multiplied for mankind, in this recitation, every kind of example, that they may remember — a flawless recitation, without the slightest crookedness, that they may guard themselves.
ولقد ضربنا للناس في هذا القرءان من كل مثل لعلهم يتذكرون قرءانا عربيا غير ذي عوج لعلهم يتقونGod multiplies an example: a man belonging to quarrelling partners, and a man belonging wholly to one man —
ضرب الله مثلا رجلا فيه شركاء متشكسون ورجلا سلما لرجلare they equal, as an example?
هل يستويان مثلاPraise belongs to God!
الحمد للهBut most of them do not know.
بل اكثرهم لا يعلمونYou will die, and they will die; then, on the Day of Appearance, you will quarrel before your Guardian.
انك ميت وانهم ميتون ثم انكم يوم القيمة عند ربكم تختصمونWho then is more unjust than one who lies about God and denies the truth when it has come to him?
فمن اظلم ممن كذب على الله وكذب بالصدق اذ جاءهIs there not, in Jahannam, a dwelling for those who disown?
اليس في جهنم مثوى للكفرينAnd he who came with the truth, and affirmed it, those are the ones who guard themselves.
والذي جاء بالصدق وصدق به اوليك هم المتقونThey will have whatever they wish, with their Guardian;
لهم ما يشاءون عند ربهمsuch is the reward of those who do good: God covers for them the worst of what they did, and repays them according to the best of what they used to do.
ذلك جزاء المحسنين ليكفر الله عنهم اسوا الذي عملوا ويجزيهم اجرهم باحسن الذي كانوا يعملونIs God not sufficient for His obedient one?
اليس الله بكاف عبدهThey seek to frighten you with those besides Him;
ويخوفونك بالذين من دونهand whoever God sends astray has no guide.
ومن يضلل الله فما له من هادAnd whoever God guides has no one to lead him astray;
ومن يهد الله فما له من مضلis God not All-Powerful, possessor of vengeance?
اليس الله بعزيز ذي انتقامAnd if you ask them who created the heavens and the earth, they will surely say: "God";
ولين سالتهم من خلق السموت والارض ليقولن اللهsay: "Have you considered, then, what you invoke besides God? If God willed harm for me, could they remove His harm? Or if He willed benevolence for me, could they withhold His benevolence?"
قل افرءيتم ما تدعون من دون الله ان ارادني الله بضر هل هن كشفت ضره او ارادني برحمة هل هن ممسكت رحمتهSay: "God is sufficient for me;
قل حسبي اللهit is in Him that those who rely [upon God] rely."
عليه يتوكل المتوكلونSay: "O my people, act according to your position; I am acting [according to mine];
قل يقوم اعملوا على مكانتكم اني عملyou will soon know upon whom a punishment will fall that disgraces him, and upon whom a lasting punishment will settle."
فسوف تعلمون من ياتيه عذاب يخزيه ويحل عليه عذاب مقيمWe have sent down to you the Scripture for mankind, in truth;
انا انزلنا عليك الكتب للناس بالحقwhoever is guided, it is for his own Self;
فمن اهتدى فلنفسهand whoever strays, strays only against his own Self;
ومن ضل فانما يضل عليهاand you are not a trustee over them.
وما انت عليهم بوكيلGod takes back the Selves at the time of their death, and those that have not died, during their sleep;
الله يتوفى الانفس حين موتها والتي لم تمت في منامهاHe retains those for whom He has decreed death, and sends back the others until an appointed term;
فيمسك التي قضى عليها الموت ويرسل الاخرى الى اجل مسمىthere are surely in that signs for a people who reflect.
ان في ذلك لءايت لقوم يتفكرونHave they taken intercessors besides God?
ام اتخذوا من دون الله شفعاءSay: "Even though they have no power over anything and do not reason?"
قل اولو كانوا لا يملكون شيا ولا يعقلونSay: "Intercession belongs entirely to God;
قل لله الشفعة جميعاto Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth;
له ملك السموت والارضthen to Him you will be returned."
ثم اليه ترجعونAnd when God alone is mentioned, the cores of those who do not believe in the last life shrink with revulsion;
واذا ذكر الله وحده اشمازت قلوب الذين لا يومنون بالءاخرةbut when those besides Him are mentioned, at once they rejoice.
واذا ذكر الذين من دونه اذا هم يستبشرونSay: "O God, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of what escapes the senses and of what is manifest, You alone will judge between Your obedient ones concerning that in which they used to differ."
قل اللهم فاطر السموت والارض علم الغيب والشهدة انت تحكم بين عبادك في ما كانوا فيه يختلفونIf those who did wrong possessed all that is on earth, and its like besides, they would offer it as ransom from the worst punishment on the Day of Appearance;
ولو ان للذين ظلموا ما في الارض جميعا ومثله معه لافتدوا به من سوء العذاب يوم القيمةand there will appear to them, from God, what they had not accounted for.
وبدا لهم من الله ما لم يكونوا يحتسبونThe evil consequences of what they earned will appear to them,
وبدا لهم سيات ما كسبواand what they used to mock will envelop them.
وحاق بهم ما كانوا به يستهزءونWhen harm touches the human being, he calls upon Us; then, when We grant him a blessing from Us, he says: "This was only given to me because of some knowledge [I possess]."
فاذا مس الانسن ضر دعانا ثم اذا خولنه نعمة منا قال انما اوتيته على علمRather, it is a trial,
بل هي فتنةbut most of them do not know.
ولكن اكثرهم لا يعلمونThose before them said the same thing, and what they used to earn availed them nothing.
قد قالها الذين من قبلهم فما اغنى عنهم ما كانوا يكسبونThe evil consequences of what they earned struck them;
فاصابهم سيات ما كسبواand those among these who do wrong will be struck by the evil consequences of what they earn, and they will not render [Him] powerless.
والذين ظلموا من هولاء سيصيبهم سيات ما كسبوا وما هم بمعجزينDo they not know that God extends provision for whom He wills, and measures it?
اولم يعلموا ان الله يبسط الرزق لمن يشاء ويقدرThere are surely in that signs for a people who believe.
ان في ذلك لءايت لقوم يومنونSay: "O My obedient ones who have been excessive against yourselves, do not lose heart regarding the benevolence of God;
قل يعبادي الذين اسرفوا على انفسهم لا تقنطوا من رحمة اللهGod forgives all offenses;
ان الله يغفر الذنوب جميعاit is indeed He, the Most-Forgiving, the Benevolent."
انه هو الغفور الرحيمTurn back to your Guardian, and be true to Him alone, before the punishment comes to you; then you will not be helped.
وانيبوا الى ربكم واسلموا له من قبل ان ياتيكم العذاب ثم لا تنصرونAnd follow the best of what has been sent down to you from your Guardian, before the punishment comes to you suddenly, without your realizing it — lest a Self should say: "What regret, for having neglected my duty toward God, and for having been among the mockers!" or should say: "Had God guided me, I would have been among those who guard themselves"; or should say, upon seeing the punishment: "If only I had a return, I would be among those who do good."
واتبعوا احسن ما انزل اليكم من ربكم من قبل ان ياتيكم العذاب بغتة وانتم لا تشعرون ان تقول نفس يحسرتى على ما فرطت في جنب الله وان كنت لمن السخرين او تقول لو ان الله هدىني لكنت من المتقين او تقول حين ترى العذاب لو ان لي كرة فاكون من المحسنينIndeed! My signs certainly came to you, but you denied them, grew arrogant, and were among those who disown.
بلى قد جاءتك ءايتي فكذبت بها واستكبرت وكنت من الكفرينAnd on the Day of Appearance, you will see those who lied about God, their faces blackened.
ويوم القيمة ترى الذين كذبوا على الله وجوههم مسودةIs there not, in Jahannam, a dwelling for the arrogant?
اليس في جهنم مثوى للمتكبرينAnd God saves those who guarded themselves, by their triumph; no harm will touch them, nor will they grieve.
وينجي الله الذين اتقوا بمفازتهم لا يمسهم السوء ولا هم يحزنونGod is the creator of all things;
الله خلق كل شىءand He is, over all things, a trustee.
وهو على كل شىء وكيلTo Him belong the charges of the heavens and the earth;
له مقاليد السموت والارضand those who disown the signs of God, those are the losers.
والذين كفروا بايت الله اوليك هم الخسرونSay: "Do you then command me to obey other than God, O ignorant ones?"
قل افغير الله تامروني اعبد ايها الجهلونIt has certainly been revealed to you, and to those before you: "If you associate, your work will surely collapse, and you will surely be among the losers."
ولقد اوحي اليك والى الذين من قبلك لين اشركت ليحبطن عملك ولتكونن من الخسرينSo obey God, and be among the grateful.
بل الله فاعبد وكن من الشكرينThey did not measure God with His true measure; the whole earth will be in His grasp on the Day of Appearance, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand.
وما قدروا الله حق قدره والارض جميعا قبضته يوم القيمة والسموت مطويت بيمينهGlory be to Him! He is far above what they associate with Him.
سبحنه وتعلى عما يشركونThe Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will collapse, thunderstruck, except whom God wills;
ونفخ في الصور فصعق من في السموت ومن في الارض الا من شاء اللهthen it will be blown a second time, and at once they will stand up, looking on.
ثم نفخ فيه اخرى فاذا هم قيام ينظرونThe earth will shine with the light of its Guardian; the record will be set down; the prophets and the witnesses will be brought forward; it will be judged between them in truth, and they will not be wronged.
واشرقت الارض بنور ربها ووضع الكتب وجايء بالنبين والشهداء وقضي بينهم بالحق وهم لا يظلمونEvery Self will be paid in full for what it did, and He knows best what they do.
ووفيت كل نفس ما عملت وهو اعلم بما يفعلونThose who disown will be driven toward Jahannam, in troops,
وسيق الذين كفروا الى جهنم زمراuntil, when they reach it, its gates will open, and its keepers will say to them: "Did messengers from among you not come to you, reciting to you the signs of your Guardian and warning you of the meeting of this your day?"
حتى اذا جاءوها فتحت ابوبها وقال لهم خزنتها الم ياتكم رسل منكم يتلون عليكم ءايت ربكم وينذرونكم لقاء يومكم هذاThey will say: "Indeed!" but the word of punishment will have proven true against those who disowned.
قالوا بلى ولكن حقت كلمة العذاب على الكفرينIt will be said: "Enter the gates of Jahannam, to abide therein eternally."
قيل ادخلوا ابوب جهنم خلدين فيهاHow wretched is the dwelling of the arrogant!
فبيس مثوى المتكبرينAnd those who guarded themselves before their Guardian will be led toward the Garden, in troops,
وسيق الذين اتقوا ربهم الى الجنة زمراuntil, when they reach it, and its gates open, its keepers will say to them: "Peace be upon you, you have been good — enter it, to abide therein eternally."
حتى اذا جاءوها وفتحت ابوبها وقال لهم خزنتها سلم عليكم طبتم فادخلوها خلدينThey will say: "Praise belongs to God, who has kept His promise to us, and made us inherit the earth, that we may settle in the Garden wherever we wish; how excellent is the reward of those who work!"
وقالوا الحمد لله الذي صدقنا وعده واورثنا الارض نتبوا من الجنة حيث نشاء فنعم اجر العملينAnd you will see the Agents surrounding the Edifice, glorifying their Guardian with praise;
وترى المليكة حافين من حول العرش يسبحون بحمد ربهمit will be judged between them in truth,
وقضي بينهم بالحقand it will be said: "Praise belongs to God, Guardian of all beings."
وقيل الحمد لله رب العلمين
