An-Nisa

  • In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. O mankind! guard yourselves toward your Guardian, who created you from a single Self, and created from it its spouse, and spread, from the two of them, many men and women.i 1
  • And guard yourselves toward God, in whose name you appeal to one another, and [respect] the ties of kinship. 1
  • God is indeed, over you, an Observer. 1
  • And give the orphans their possessions, 2
  • and do not substitute the vile for the good, 2
  • and do not devour their possessions with yours: 2
  • that is indeed a grave offense. 2
  • And if you fear not being equitable toward the orphans, marry then those women who are agreeable to you, two, three, or four;i 3
  • and if you fear not being just, then only one, or those to whom you are bound by oath. 3
  • That is closest to sparing you from being overburdened by the weight of a family (too large to bear).i 3
  • And give women their dowries, as an attribution of full right. 4
  • Then, if they willingly release any of it to you, consume it 4
  • in complete ease and benefit. 4
  • And do not entrust to the foolish your possessions, which God has made a support for you; 5
  • but feed them from it, clothe them, and speak to them a recognized word. 5
  • And test the orphans until they reach the age of marriage; if you then discern in them a soundness of judgment, hand over to them their possessions, and do not devour them wastefully and hastily, before they grow up. 6
  • And whoever is rich, let him abstain; 6
  • and whoever is poor, let him eat from it reasonably. 6
  • And when you hand over their possessions to them, take witnesses regarding them. 6
  • God suffices as an accountant. 6
  • To men belongs a share of what the two parents and relatives leave, and to women belongs a share of what the two parents and relatives leave, whether little or much — 7
  • a mandatory share.i 7
  • And when the possessors of kinship ties, the orphans, and the destitute are present at the division, assign them a share from it,i 8
  • and speak to them a recognized word. 8
  • And let those fear [doing wrong] who, if they left behind them a vulnerable offspring, would fear for it: 9
  • let them, then, guard themselves toward God, and speak a straightforward word. 9
  • Those who devour the possessions of orphans unjustly are only swallowing fire into their bellies, 10
  • and they will burn in a blaze. 10
  • God instructs you, concerning your children: 11
  • to the male, the equivalent of the share of two females. 11
  • But if there are more than two women, two-thirds of what is left belongs to them; 11
  • and if she is alone, half belongs to her. 11
  • And to his two parents, to each of them, a sixth of what he leaves, if he has a child; 11
  • but if he has no child, and his parents inherit from him, to his mother belongs a third. 11
  • If he has siblings, to his mother belongs a sixth, 11
  • after [the execution of] a testament he may have made, or a debt. 11
  • Your parents and your children — you do not know which of them are closer to you in benefit: 11
  • it is an obligation from God. 11
  • God is indeed All-Knowing, Wise. 11
  • And to you belongs half of what your wives leave, if they have no child; 12
  • but if they have a child, to you belongs a quarter of what they leave, after [the execution of] a testament they may have made, or a debt. 12
  • And to them belongs a quarter of what you leave, if you have no child; 12
  • but if you have a child, to them belongs an eighth of what you leave, after [the execution of] a testament you may have made, or a debt. 12
  • And if a man whose inheritance passes in the absence of any ascendant or descendant, or a woman in the same case, has a brother or a sister, to each of them belongs a sixth;i 12
  • but if they are more numerous than that, they share in the third, after [the execution of] a testament that may have been made, or a debt, without harm [to the heirs]. 12
  • It is a recommendation from God. 12
  • God is All-Knowing, full of patience. 12
  • Those are the limits of God. 13
  • And whoever obeys God and His Messenger, He admits him into gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein he will abide eternally. 13
  • That is the immense triumph. 13
  • And whoever disobeys God and His Messenger, and transgresses His limits, He admits him into a fire wherein he will abide eternally, 14
  • and he will have a humiliating punishment. 14
  • And those of your women who commit indecency, take against them the testimony of four among you; 15
  • and if they testify, then keep them within the household rather than casting them out, until death recalls them [to God], or God opens a way for them.i 15
  • And the two among you who commit it, sanction them both; 16
  • but if they turn back [to God] and reform, turn away from them: 16
  • God is indeed the Ever-Accepter of repentance, full of benevolence. 16
  • The repentance accepted by God concerns only those who do evil out of ignorance, then turn back [to Him] without delay: 17
  • those are the ones toward whom God turns with clemency. 17
  • God is All-Knowing, Wise. 17
  • And repentance is not accepted for those who commit evil deeds until, when death presents itself to one of them, he says: "I turn back [to God] now" — nor for those who die while denying-disowning: 18
  • those are the ones for whom We have prepared a painful punishment. 18
  • O you who have believed! it is not lawful for you to inherit women against their will, 19
  • and do not prevent them [from remarrying] so as to take back part of what you gave them, unless they commit a manifest indecency. 19
  • And live with them according to what is recognized. 19
  • If you dislike them, it may be that you dislike a thing in which God places much good. 19
  • And if you want to replace one wife with another, and you have given one of them a treasure, take nothing of it back.i 20
  • Would you take it back through slander and manifest transgression? 20
  • And how would you take it back, when one of you has already been intimately united with the other, and they took from you a solemn engagement? 21
  • And do not marry those women whom your ancestors married, except what has already passed. 22
  • It was an indecency and an abomination, 22
  • and what an evil path! 22
  • Forbidden to you are: your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your paternal aunts, your maternal aunts, your brother's daughters, your sister's daughters, 23

  • your mothers who took you into their care, as well as your sisters through shared care,i 23
  • the mothers of your wives, your stepdaughters under your care, from wives with whom you have consummated marriage — 23
  • but if you have not consummated marriage with them, no blame upon you — 23
  • the wives of your sons from your own loins, 23
  • and to unite two sisters, except what has already passed. 23

  • And the contractually protected women, except those to whom you are bound by oath —i 24
  • it is God's Code that binds you.i 24
  • And made lawful to you are all beyond these categories, whom you seek with your possessions, as men who bind themselves in contract, not in debauchery. 24
  • And for what you have enjoyed with them, give them their rewards, as a fixed obligation. 24
  • And no blame upon you for what you mutually agree upon, beyond the fixed obligation. 24
  • God is indeed All-Knowing, Wise. 24
  • And whoever among you lacks the means to marry believing protected women, [let him marry] then one of your believing young women bound by oath.i 25
  • God knows perfectly your mutual commitments, by virtue of your faith;i 25
  • You are of one another. 25
  • Marry them, then, with the permission of their family, 25
  • and give them their wages according to what is recognized, as protected women, not as promiscuous ones nor as takers of secret lovers.i 25
  • And once protected, if they commit an indecency, they incur half the punishment of women protected by contract.i 25
  • That, for whoever among you fears falling into [moral] hardship; 25

  • God wants to turn toward you with clemency, 27
  • while those who follow their desires want you to deviate greatly. 27
  • God wants to lighten [the burden] for you, 28
  • for the human being was created weak. 28
  • O you who have believed! do not devour your wealth among yourselves through falsehood, 29
  • unless it is a trade concluded with your mutual consent. 29
  • And do not kill yourselves: 29
  • God is indeed, toward you, full of benevolence. 29
  • And whoever does that out of hostility and injustice, We will burn him in a fire. 30
  • And that is, for God, an easy thing. 30
  • If you avoid the grave offenses which are forbidden to you, We will cover your evil deeds, and We will admit you into a noble entrance. 31
  • And do not covet that by which God has favored some of you above others. 32
  • To men a share of what they have earned, 32

  • God is indeed, of all things, All-Knowing. 32
  • And to each, We have assigned heirs for what are left 33
  • by the two parents and the relatives. 33
  • And those with whom your oaths have bound you, give them their share. 33
  • God is indeed, over all things, a witness. 33
  • Men bear the executive, protective, and financial charge of the household toward women, by reason of the advantage God has granted some over others, and of what they spend from their possessions.i 34
  • Righteous women are devoted, guardians of what escapes the presence [of others], by reason of what God has preserved. 34
  • And those whose unilateral breach [of the marital pact] you fear, admonish them, withdraw from them in the beds, then multiply them [the marital structure, by taking another wife];i 34
  • then, if they obey you, seek no further way against them. 34
  • God is indeed Exalted, Great. 34
  • And if you fear a rupture between the two, send then an arbiter from his family, and an arbiter from her family; if they both want reconciliation, God will bring them into accord. 35
  • God is indeed All-Knowing, Informed. 35
  • And obey God, 36
  • and associate nothing with Him, 36
  • and kindness toward the two parents, relatives, orphans, the destitute, the near neighbor, the distant neighbor, the companion at your side, the stranded traveler, and those to whom you are bound by oath. 36
  • God does not love him who is vain, full of boastfulness. 36
  • Those who are stingy, order stinginess upon people, and hide what God has given them of His favor — 37
  • We have prepared, for those who deny-disown, a humiliating punishment. 37
  • And those who spend their wealth for show before people, and believe neither in God nor in the Last Day — 38
  • whoever has the Diverter as a companion, what an evil companion!i 38
  • And what would they have to lose, if they believed in God and the Last Day, and spent from what God provided them as sustenance? 39
  • God knows them perfectly. 39
  • God does no injustice, even the weight of a grain. 40
  • And if it is a good deed, He doubles it, and grants, from Himself, an immense reward. 40
  • How then, when We bring, from every community, a witness, and We bring you as a witness against these? 41
  • On that day, those who denied-disowned and disobeyed the messenger would wish that the earth were leveled over them, and they will not be able to hide anything from God. 42
  • O you who have believed! do not approach the Contact while intoxicated, until you know what you are saying, nor [after] having soiled yourselves [relieving a need] — except when passing along a way — until you have washed yourselves.i 43
  • And if you are sick, or on a journey, or one of you has come from relieving himself, or you have known a woman in intimacy, and you find no water, then resort to clean earth, and wipe your faces and your hands with it.i 43

  • God is indeed Ever-Effacing, Most-Forgiving. 43
  • Have you not seen those to whom a share of the Scripture was given, buying error and wanting you to stray from the path?i 44
  • God knows best your enemies. 45
  • God suffices as a protector, and God suffices as a helper. 45
  • Among the Reoriented, there are some who displace words from their context, and say: "We have heard and disobeyed", and: "Listen, without being made to hear", and: "Ra'ina", twisting their tongues and casting aspersion on the Law.i 46
  • And had they said: "We have heard and obeyed", and: "Listen", and: "Look at us", it would have been better for them, and more upright; 46
  • but God cursed them for their denial-disowning, and they believe only a little. 46
  • O you to whom the Scripture was given! believe in what We have sent down, confirming what is with you, before We efface faces, turning them backward, or curse them as We cursed those of the sabt [the act of rest/inaction].i 47
  • And the command of God is always fulfilled. 47
  • God does not forgive that anything be associated with Him, 48
  • but He forgives, besides that, whom He wills. 48
  • And whoever associates with God invents a grave offense. 48
  • Have you not seen those who declare themselves pure? 49
  • God, rather, purifies whom He wills, 49
  • and they will not be wronged by a thread. 49
  • Look how they invent the lie against God: that suffices as a manifest offense. 50
  • Have you not seen those to whom a share of the Scripture was given, believing in the Idol and the Tyrant, and saying of those who deny-disown: "These are better guided, in path, than those who have believed"?i 51
  • Those are the ones God has cursed; 52
  • and whoever God curses, you will find for him no helper. 52
  • Or do they have a share of the dominion? They would then not give people even the groove of a date-stone. 53
  • Or do they envy people for what God has given them of His favor? 54
  • We have indeed given the family of Ibrahim the Scripture and the wisdom, and We gave them an immense dominion.i 54
  • Among them, there are some who believed in it, and some who turned away from it. 55
  • Jahannam suffices as a blaze. 55
  • Those who denied-disowned Our signs, We will burn them in a fire. 56
  • Every time their skins are consumed, We will replace them with other skins, so that they may taste the punishment. 56
  • God is indeed All-Powerful, Wise. 56
  • And those who have believed and done righteous deeds, We will admit them into gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally, forever. 57
  • They will have therein purified spouses, 57
  • and We will admit them into an extended shade. 57
  • God orders you to restore trusts to their rightful owners, and, when you judge between people, to judge with equity. 58
  • How excellent is that to which God exhorts you! 58
  • God is indeed the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. 58
  • O you who have believed! obey God, obey the messenger, and those among you who hold authority. 59
  • And if you disagree about something, refer it to God and to the messenger, if you believe in God and the Last Day. 59
  • That is better, and of finer interpretation. 59
  • Have you not seen those who claim to have believed in what has been revealed to you and in what was revealed before you, and who want to bring their dispute before the Tyrant, though they have been ordered to deny-disown it? 60
  • The Diverter wants to lead them far astray.i 60
  • And when it is said to them: "Come to what God has sent down, and to the messenger", you see the hypocrites turn away from you, resolutely. 61
  • How then, when misfortune strikes them for what their hands have wrought, do they then come to you, swearing by God: "We wanted only good and reconciliation"? 62
  • Those are the ones whose cores God knows; turn away from them, then, admonish them, and speak to them, concerning themselves, a penetrating word. 63
  • And We sent no messenger except that he be obeyed, with God's permission. 64
  • And had they come to you, after having wronged themselves, to ask God's forgiveness, and had the messenger asked forgiveness for them, they would certainly have found God the Ever-Accepter of repentance, full of benevolence. 64
  • But no, by your Guardian! they will not believe until they have taken you as judge of their disputes, and no longer find, within themselves, any hardship over what you have decided, and accept it with complete integrity. 65
  • And had We prescribed for them: "Kill yourselves", or: "Leave your dwellings", they would not have done it, except a small number of them. 66
  • And had they done what they were exhorted to do, it would have been better for them, and more strengthening; 66
  • and We would then certainly have given them, from Ourselves, an immense reward, 67
  • and We would certainly have guided them to a straight path. 68
  • And whoever obeys God and the messenger, those will be with those God has blessed, among the prophets, the men of truth, the witnesses, and the righteous. 69
  • And what an excellent company that is! 69
  • That is the favor from God, 70
  • and God suffices as All-Knowing. 70
  • O you who have believed! take your precautions, and mobilize in detachments, or mobilize all together.i 71
  • And there is indeed among you one who deliberately lags behind; 72
  • and if misfortune strikes you, he says: "God has blessed me, since I was not present with them." 72
  • But if a favor from God reaches you, he will certainly say, as if there had been no affection between you and him: "Would that I had been with them, I would then have attained an immense triumph!" 73
  • So let those fight in the way of God who sell the present life for the last life. 74
  • And whoever fights in the way of God, and is killed or prevails, We will give him an immense reward. 74
  • And what is with you that you should not fight in the way of God, and for the men, women, and children reduced to weakness, who say: "Our Guardian, bring us out of this city whose people are unjust, and give us, from Yourself, a protector, and give us, from Yourself, a helper"? 75
  • Those who have believed fight in the way of God, 76
  • and those who deny-disown fight in the way of the Tyrant. 76
  • So fight the allies of the Diverter:i 76
  • the scheming of the Diverter is indeed weak.i 76
  • Have you not seen those to whom it was said: "Hold back your hands, maintain the Contact, and give the purifying alms"? 77
  • Then, when combat was prescribed for them, there a group among them dread people as one dreads God, or with an even keener dread, 77
  • and they say: "Our Guardian, why have You prescribed combat for us? Why did You not grant us a delay until a near term!" 77
  • Say: "The enjoyment of the present life is little, 77
  • and the last life is better for whoever guards himself, 77
  • and you will not be wronged by a thread." 77
  • Wherever you are, death will reach you, even were you in impregnable towers. 78
  • And if good befalls them, they say: "This is from God"; 78
  • and if evil befalls them, they say: "This is from you." 78
  • Say: "All comes from God." 78
  • What is with these people that they scarcely understand a discourse? 78
  • What reaches you of good comes from God, 79
  • and what reaches you of evil comes from yourself. 79
  • And We sent you to mankind as a messenger. 79
  • God suffices as a witness. 79
  • Whoever obeys the messenger indeed obeys God, 80
  • and whoever turns away — We have not sent you as a guardian over them. 80
  • And they say: "Obedience", 81
  • but when they leave you, a group among them schemes by night something quite different from what they say. 81
  • God records what they scheme by night. 81
  • Turn away from them, then, and rely upon God. 81
  • God suffices as a trustee-agent. 81
  • Do they not then reflect on this Recitation? 82
  • Had it come from other than God, they would have found in it much divergence. 82
  • And when news reaches them, reassuring or alarming, they spread it; 83
  • but had they referred it to the messenger and to those among them who hold authority, those among them who seek to draw out its substance would have known it. 83
  • And without God's favor upon you and His benevolence, you would certainly have followed the Diverter, except a few.i 83
  • So fight in the way of God: 84
  • you are charged only with yourself. 84
  • And incite the believers [to combat]. 84
  • It may be that God will restrain the violence of those who deny-disown. 84
  • God is more formidable in violence, and more formidable in exemplary punishment. 84
  • Whoever intercedes with a good intercession will have a share of it; 85
  • and whoever intercedes with an evil intercession will bear a share of responsibility for it. 85
  • God is, over all things, a guarantor. 85
  • And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet with a better greeting, or simply return it. 86
  • God is indeed, over all things, an accountant. 86
  • God, there is no deity but Him. 87
  • He will certainly gather you on the Day of Appearance, no doubt possible. 87
  • And who is more truthful than God in speech? 87
  • What is with you, then, concerning the hypocrites, that you form two groups, when God has cast them back for what they have earned? 88
  • Do you want to guide him whom God has led astray? 88
  • And whoever God leads astray, you will find for him no path. 88
  • They would like you to deny-disown as they denied-disowned, so that you might be equal; 89
  • so do not take, among them, allies, until they emigrate in the way of God. 89
  • If they turn away, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them, and take, among them, neither ally nor helper — except those who join a people between whom and you there is a pact, or who come to you 90
  • with their hearts constrained at the thought of fighting you, or fighting their own people. 90
  • And had God willed, He would have given them power over you, and they would have fought you. 90
  • If they keep away from you, do not fight you, and offer you peace, then God grants you no way against them. 90
  • You will find others who want to be secure with you and secure with their own people; every time they are brought back to the trial, they plunge back into it. 91
  • If they do not keep away from you, do not offer you peace, and do not restrain their hands, then seize them and kill them wherever you encounter them. 91
  • Those are the ones against whom We give you manifest authority. 91
  • And it is not for a believer to kill a believer, 92
  • except by mistake. 92
  • And whoever kills a believer by mistake must free a believing person from the burden of a debt, as well as a compensation delivered to his family, unless they forgo it as charity. 92
  • And if the slain belonged to a people hostile to you, while being a believer, then the freeing of a believing person from the burden of a debt. 92
  • And if he belonged to a people between whom and you there is a pact, then a compensation delivered to his family, and the freeing of a believing person from the burden of a debt. 92
  • And whoever does not find the means, then an abstention of two consecutive months, as a [accepted] return toward God. 92
  • God is All-Knowing, Wise. 92
  • And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his reward is Jahannam, wherein he will abide eternally; God is angered against him, has cursed him, and has prepared for him an immense punishment. 93
  • O you who have believed! when you advance in the way of God, distinguish clearly, 94
  • and do not say to one who offers you peace: "You are not a believer", coveting the fleeting goods of the present life; but, with God, there are abundant spoils. 94
  • Thus were you before, and God blessed you. 94
  • So distinguish clearly. 94
  • God is indeed well informed of what you do. 94
  • Not equal are those of the believers who remain seated, apart from those with disabilities, and those who strive in the way of God with their possessions and their Selves. 95
  • God has favored those who strive with their possessions and their Selves, in degree, above those who remain seated. 95
  • And to all, God has promised the best; 95
  • and God has favored those who strive, above those who remain seated, with an immense reward — degrees from Him, and forgiveness, and benevolence;i 96
  • and God is Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 96
  • Those whom the Agents take back [to God] while they are unjust toward themselves — [the Agents] say: "In what situation were you?"i 97
  • They say: "We were reduced to weakness on the earth." 97
  • They say: "Was God's earth not vast enough for you to emigrate in it?" 97
  • Those are the ones whose refuge will be Jahannam; and what an evil destination! — except the men, women, and children reduced to weakness, who have neither the means to scheme, nor to find a way. 98
  • Those, it may be that God will efface them [of their fault]. 99
  • God effaces ceaselessly, He is Most-Forgiving. 99
  • And whoever emigrates in the way of God will find, on the earth, an ample refuge and abundance. 100
  • And whoever leaves his dwelling, emigrating toward God and His Messenger, and is then overtaken by death, his reward is henceforth incumbent upon God. 100
  • God is Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 100
  • And when you travel through the land, no blame upon you for shortening the Contact, if you fear that those who deny-disown may try you. 101
  • Those who deny-disown are indeed, for you, a manifest enemy. 101
  • And when you are among them, and you lead the Contact for them, let a group of them stand with you, and let them take their arms. 102
  • Then, when they have prostrated, let them pass behind you, 102
  • and let another group, who has not yet performed the Contact, come to perform it with you, taking their precautions and their arms. 102
  • Those who deny-disown would like you to neglect your arms and your equipment, so as to swoop down upon you in a single rush. 102
  • And no blame upon you, if you are hindered by rain or are sick, for laying down your arms; 102
  • but take your precautions. 102
  • God has indeed prepared, for those who deny-disown, a humiliating punishment. 102
  • And when you have completed the Contact, remember God, standing, sitting, or lying on your sides. 103
  • Then, once at ease, maintain the Contact. 103
  • The Contact is indeed, for the believers, a prescription at fixed times.i 103
  • And do not weaken in the pursuit of that people. 104
  • If you suffer, they suffer as you suffer; but you hope from God what they do not hope. 104
  • God is All-Knowing, Wise. 104
  • We have sent down to you the Scripture in truth, so that you may judge between people according to what God has shown you.i 105
  • And do not be, for the treacherous, a defender. 105
  • And ask God's forgiveness. 106
  • God is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 106
  • And do not dispute in favor of those who betray themselves. 107
  • God does not love him who is treacherous, transgressive. 107
  • They hide from people, but cannot hide from God: He is with them, when they scheme by night words He does not approve. 108
  • God encompasses perfectly what they do. 108
  • So here you are, who pleaded for them in the present life; but who will plead for them, before God, on the Day of Appearance? Or who will be, for them, a trustee-agent? 109
  • And whoever commits an evil, or wrongs his own Self, then asks God's forgiveness, finds God Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 110
  • And whoever acquires a transgression acquires it only against his own Self. 111
  • God is All-Knowing, Wise. 111
  • And whoever acquires an offense or a transgression, then accuses an innocent person of it, burdens himself with a slander and a manifest offense. 112
  • And without God's favor upon you and His benevolence, a group among them would have resolved to lead you astray; 113
  • but they lead astray none but themselves, and they cannot harm you at all. 113
  • God has sent down upon you the Scripture and the wisdom, and taught you what you did not know.i 113
  • The favor of God upon you is immense. 113
  • There is no good in most of their private conferences, except for one who orders an alms, or a good deed, or a reconciliation between people. 114
  • And whoever does that seeking the good pleasure of God, We will give him an immense reward. 114
  • And whoever opposes the messenger, after guidance has become clear to him, and follows a path other than that of the believers, We will leave him to what he has turned to, and We will burn him in Jahannam. 115
  • And what an evil destination! 115
  • God does not forgive that anything be associated with Him, 116
  • but He forgives, besides that, whom He wills. 116
  • And whoever associates with God strays far astray. 116
  • They invoke, besides Him, only [feminine] deities, and they invoke only a rebellious Diverter, whom God has cursed,i 118
  • who said: "I will certainly take, among Your obedient ones, a determined portion; I will certainly lead them astray, I will certainly give them vain hopes, I will certainly order them to slit the ears of cattle, and I will certainly order them to alter God's creation."i 119
  • And whoever takes the Diverter as an ally, besides God, has indeed suffered a manifest loss.i 119
  • He makes them promises and gives them vain hopes, 120
  • and the Diverter promises them only deception.i 120
  • Those are the ones whose refuge will be Jahannam, 121
  • and they will find no escape from it. 121
  • And those who have believed and done righteous deeds, We will admit them into gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally, forever. 122
  • A promise of God, in truth. 122
  • And who is more truthful than God in speech? 122
  • It does not depend on your wishes, nor on the wishes of the people of the Scripture.i 123
  • Whoever commits an evil will be rewarded for it, and will find, besides God, neither protector nor helper. 123
  • And whoever does righteous deeds, male or female, while being a believer, those will enter the Garden, and will not be wronged in anything. 124
  • And who has a better Law than one who has made his direction toward God integral, while doing good, and followed the doctrine of Ibrahim, wholly turned toward God?i 125
  • And God took Ibrahim as an intimate friend.i 125
  • And to God belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth. 126
  • God encompasses, of all things, perfectly. 126
  • And they consult you concerning women. 127
  • Say: "God instructs you concerning them, as well as what is recited to you in the Scripture concerning the orphan girls to whom you do not give what is prescribed for them, while desiring to marry them, and the children reduced to weakness, and [He orders you] to conduct yourselves with the orphans in complete equity.i 127
  • And whatever good you do, God knows it perfectly." 127
  • And if a woman fears from her husband persistent hostility or disinterest, no blame upon them to reconcile through an agreement; 128
  • and reconciliation is better. 128
  • The Selves are inclined to stinginess; 128
  • but if you act with kindness and guard yourselves, God is indeed well informed of what you do. 128
  • And you will never be able to be equitable between women, even if you are keen on it; 129
  • so do not incline entirely [to one side], to the point of leaving the other as if suspended. 129
  • And if you reconcile and guard yourselves, God is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 129
  • And if they separate, God will enrich each of them from His abundance. 130
  • God is Vast, Wise. 130
  • And to God belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth. 131
  • And We have indeed recommended to those to whom the Scripture was given before you, and to yourselves, to guard yourselves toward God.i 131
  • And if you deny-disown, to God belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth. 131
  • God is self-sufficient, worthy of praise. 131
  • And to God belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth. 132
  • God suffices as a trustee-agent. 132
  • If He wills, He makes you disappear, O mankind, and brings others in your place.i 133
  • God is capable of that. 133
  • Whoever wants the reward of the present life — with God is the reward of the present life and of the last life. 134
  • God is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. 134
  • O you who have believed! be firm supporters in equity, witnesses for God, even against yourselves, or your parents, or your relatives. 135
  • Whether he be rich or poor, God is closer to them both than you; so do not follow emotion, to the point of no longer being equitable. 135
  • And if you distort or turn away, God is indeed well informed of what you do. 135
  • O you who have believed! believe in God, in His Messenger, in the Scripture He sent down upon His Messenger, and in the Scripture He sent down before.i 136
  • And whoever denies-disowns God, His Agents, His scriptures, His messengers, and the Last Day strays far astray.i 136
  • Those who have believed, then denied-disowned, then believed, then denied-disowned, then increased in denial-disowning — it is not for God to forgive them, nor to guide them to a path. 137
  • Announce to the hypocrites that they will have a painful punishment — those who take those who deny-disown as allies, besides the believers.i 139
  • Do they seek power with them? Power belongs to God in its entirety. 139
  • And He has already sent down to you, in the Scripture, [this]: when you hear the signs of God being denied and mocked, do not remain seated with them, until they move on to another subject;i 140
  • you would then be like them. 140
  • God will certainly gather the hypocrites and those who deny-disown, all together, in Jahannam — those who watch [what happens to you]: if a victory comes to you from God, they say: "Were we not with you?" and if a share falls to those who deny-disown, they say: "Did we not overpower you, and did we not protect you against the believers?" 141
  • God will judge between you, on the Day of Appearance; 141
  • and God will never grant those who deny-disown a way over the believers. 141
  • The hypocrites seek to deceive God, and it is He who deceives them [in return]. 142
  • And when they rise for the Contact, they rise lazily, making a show of themselves to people, and remember God only a little, wavering between the two, neither on one side nor the other. 143
  • And whoever God leads astray, you will find for him no path. 143
  • O you who have believed! do not take those who deny-disown as allies, besides the believers. 144
  • Would you give God manifest authority against you? 144
  • The hypocrites are indeed in the lowest stratum of the Fire, and you will never find for them a helper — 145
  • except those who turn back [to God], reform, hold firmly to God, and devote their Law sincerely to God: those are the ones who are with the believers, 146
  • and God will soon give the believers an immense reward. 146
  • What would God do with your punishment, if you are grateful and believing? 147
  • God is Grateful, All-Knowing. 147
  • God does not love the public disclosure of evil in speech, except from one who has been wronged. 148
  • God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. 148
  • Whether you disclose a good, or hide it, or forgive an evil, God is indeed Ever-Effacing, All-Powerful. 149
  • Those who deny-disown God and His messengers, and want to separate God from His messengers, saying: "We believe in part, and we deny-disown part", wanting to carve out a path between the two — those are the true deniers. 151
  • We have prepared, for those who deny-disown, a humiliating punishment. 151
  • And those who have believed in God and His messengers, and have made no distinction between any of them, to those He will soon give their rewards. 152
  • God is Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 152
  • The people of the Scripture ask you to send down upon them a scripture from the sky.i 153
  • They indeed asked Moussa something greater than that, saying: "Show us God openly"; the thunderbolt then seized them for their injustice. 153
  • Then they took the calf [as a deity], after the clear proofs had come to them; but We passed over that, 153
  • and We gave Moussa manifest authority.i 153
  • And We raised above them the Mount, by virtue of their engagement, 154
  • and We said to them: "Enter by the gate, prostrate",i 154
  • and We said to them: "Do not transgress the Sabbath", 154
  • and We took from them a solemn engagement. 154
  • It is for having violated their engagement, denied the signs of God, killed the prophets without right, and said: "Our cores are wrapped up" — no, it is God who sealed their cores for their denial-disowning, so that they believe only a little — and for their denial-disowning, and their imputation against Maryam of an immense slander, and for having said: "We killed Al-Massih, Issa, son of Maryam, the messenger of God", 157

  • They have no knowledge of it,i 157
  • except following a conjecture. 157
  • And they certainly did not kill him. 157
  • God, rather, raised him to Himself. 158
  • God is indeed All-Powerful, Wise. 158
  • And there is none among the people of the Scripture who will not certainly believe in him before his death; and on the Day of Appearance, he will be a witness against them.i 159
  • It is for the injustice of those who practice Judaism that We forbade them good things that had been made lawful for them, and for having greatly turned away from the path of God, and for having practiced usury, though they had been forbidden it, and devoured the wealth of people through falsehood. 161
  • We have prepared, for those among them who deny-disown, a painful punishment. 161
  • But those among them who are firmly rooted in knowledge, and the believers, believe in what has been revealed to you and in what was revealed before you, as well as those who maintain the Contact,i 162

  • God is All-Powerful, Wise.i 165
  • But God testifies to what He has sent down to you; 166
  • He sent it down with full knowledge, and the Agents bear witness to it.i 166
  • And God suffices as a witness. 166
  • Those who denied-disowned and turned away from the path of God have indeed strayed far astray. 167
  • Those who denied-disowned and committed injustice — it is not in God's nature to forgive them, nor to guide them to a path, except the path of Jahannam, wherein they will abide eternally, forever.i 169
  • And that is, for God, an easy thing. 169
  • O mankind! the messenger has indeed come to you with the truth, from your Guardian; believe, then, it is better for you. 170

  • And whoever disdains to obey Him, and is arrogant, He will soon gather them to Himself, all together. 172
  • As for those who have believed and done righteous deeds, He will pay them their rewards in full, and He will give them more of His favor; 173
