One Single Law
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Ḥa. Mim. ʿAyn. Sin. Qaf.
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم حم عسقThus God, the All-Powerful, the Wise, reveals to you — as He did to those before you.
كذلك يوحي اليك والى الذين من قبلك الله العزيز الحكيمTo Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth,
له ما في السموت وما في الارضand He is the Most High, the Immense.
وهو العلي العظيمThe heavens are about to be rent asunder from above them,
تكاد السموت يتفطرن من فوقهنwhile the Agents glorify [God] in praise of their Guardian and ask forgiveness for whoever is on the earth.
والمليكة يسبحون بحمد ربهم ويستغفرون لمن في الارضIs it not true that God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent?
الا ان الله هو الغفور الرحيمAs for those who take allies besides Him, God watches over them;
والذين اتخذوا من دونه اولياء الله حفيظ عليهمand you are not, yourself, their trustee.
وما انت عليهم بوكيلThus have We revealed to you a flawless recitation, that you may warn the metropolis and those around it, and warn of the Day of Gathering, of which there is no doubt:
وكذلك اوحينا اليك قرءانا عربيا لتنذر ام القرى ومن حولها وتنذر يوم الجمع لا ريب فيهa group in the Garden,
فريق في الجنةand a group in the Inferno.
وفريق في السعيرHad God willed, He would have made them a single community,
ولو شاء الله لجعلهم امة وحدةbut He admits whom He wills into His benevolence;
ولكن يدخل من يشاء في رحمتهand the wrongdoers have neither protector nor helper.
والظلمون ما لهم من ولي ولا نصيرHave they, then, taken allies besides Him?
ام اتخذوا من دونه اولياءYet it is God who is the Protector,
فالله هو الوليand it is He who gives life to the dead;
وهو يحي الموتىand He is capable of all things.
وهو على كل شىء قديرAnd whatever you differ about, its judgment rests with God.
وما اختلفتم فيه من شىء فحكمه الى اللهSuch is God, my Guardian;
ذلكم الله ربيupon Him I rely,
عليه توكلتand to Him I return.
واليه انيبOriginator of the heavens and the earth, He gave you mates from among yourselves, and mates among the cattle; by this means He multiplies you.
فاطر السموت والارض جعل لكم من انفسكم ازوجا ومن الانعم ازوجا يذروكم فيهNothing resembles Him,
ليس كمثله شىءand He is the All-Hearing, the One who sees perfectly.
وهو السميع البصيرTo Him belong the charges of the heavens and the earth;
له مقاليد السموت والارضHe extends provision to whom He wills, or measures it out sparingly.
يبسط الرزق لمن يشاء ويقدرHe is indeed All-Knowing of all things.
انه بكل شىء عليمHe has ordained for you, in the Law, what He enjoined upon Nuh, what We have revealed to you, and what We enjoined upon Ibrahim, Moussa, and Issa: "Uphold the Law, and do not become divided within it."
شرع لكم من الدين ما وصى به نوحا والذي اوحينا اليك وما وصينا به ابرهيم وموسى وعيسى ان اقيموا الدين ولا تتفرقوا فيهWhat you call them to weighs heavily upon the associators.
كبر على المشركين ما تدعوهم اليهGod draws to Himself whom He wills, and guides to Himself whoever turns back to Him.
الله يجتبي اليه من يشاء ويهدي اليه من ينيبYet they became divided only after knowledge had come to them,
وما تفرقوا الا من بعد ما جاءهم العلمout of mutual aggression among themselves.
بغيا بينهمAnd had it not been for a word that preceded from your Guardian until an appointed term, it would have been settled between them.
ولولا كلمة سبقت من ربك الى اجل مسمى لقضي بينهمAnd those who inherited the Scripture after them are in grave, unsettling doubt about it.
وان الذين اورثوا الكتب من بعدهم لفي شك منه مريبFor this, then, call and stand straight as you have been commanded, and do not follow their emotions.
فلذلك فادع واستقم كما امرت ولا تتبع اهواءهمAnd say: "I believe in whatever Scripture God has sent down, and I have been commanded to be just between you.
وقل ءامنت بما انزل الله من كتب وامرت لاعدل بينكمGod is our Guardian and your Guardian;
الله ربنا وربكمto us our deeds, and to you your deeds;
لنا اعملنا ولكم اعملكمthere is no argument between us and you;
لا حجة بيننا وبينكمGod will bring us together,
الله يجمع بينناand to Him is the destination."
واليه المصيرAnd those who dispute about God after He has been answered, their argument is void before their Guardian, and upon them is wrath,
والذين يحاجون في الله من بعد ما استجيب له حجتهم داحضة عند ربهم وعليهم غضبand for them a severe punishment.
ولهم عذاب شديدIt is God who has sent down the Scripture bearing truth, and the balance.
الله الذي انزل الكتب بالحق والميزانAnd what would make you know?
وما يدريكPerhaps the Hour is near.
لعل الساعة قريبThose who do not believe in it seek to hasten it,
يستعجل بها الذين لا يومنون بهاwhile those who have believed are filled with apprehension of it and know that it is the truth.
والذين ءامنوا مشفقون منها ويعلمون انها الحقIs it not true that those who wrangle about the Hour are in far-reaching error?
الا ان الذين يمارون في الساعة لفي ضلل بعيدGod is Subtle toward His obedient ones;
الله لطيف بعبادهHe provides for whom He wills,
يرزق من يشاءand He is the Strong, the All-Powerful.
وهو القوي العزيزWhoever desires the tilth of the last life, We increase his tilth for him;
من كان يريد حرث الءاخرة نزد له في حرثهand whoever desires the tilth of the present life, We give him a portion of it,
ومن كان يريد حرث الدنيا نوته منهاbut he will have no share in the last life.
وما له في الءاخرة من نصيبDo they, then, have associates who have ordained for them, in the Law, what God has not authorized?
ام لهم شركوا شرعوا لهم من الدين ما لم ياذن به اللهAnd were it not for the word of the Separation, it would have been decided between them;
ولولا كلمة الفصل لقضي بينهمand the wrongdoers will have a painful punishment.
وان الظلمين لهم عذاب اليمYou will see the wrongdoers apprehensive over what they have earned, while it is about to befall them;
ترى الظلمين مشفقين مما كسبوا وهو واقع بهمwhile those who have believed and done righteous deeds will be in the flowering meadows of the Gardens,
والذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت في روضات الجناتthey will have, with their Guardian, whatever they wish:
لهم ما يشاءون عند ربهمthat is the great favor.
ذلك هو الفضل الكبيرThat is what God gives as glad tidings to His obedient ones who have believed and done righteous deeds.
ذلك الذي يبشر الله عباده الذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحتSay: "I ask of you no reward for this, other than affection for one's close kin."
قل لا اسلكم عليه اجرا الا المودة في القربىAnd whoever earns a good deed, We increase its beauty for him;
ومن يقترف حسنة نزد له فيها حسناGod is indeed Most-Forgiving, Grateful.
ان الله غفور شكورWill they say that he has forged a lie against God?
ام يقولون افترى على الله كذباYet if God willed, He would seal your core;
فان يشا الله يختم على قلبكbut God blots out falsehood and establishes truth by His words.
ويمح الله البطل ويحق الحق بكلمتهHe is indeed All-Knowing of what the chests contain.
انه عليم بذات الصدورIt is He who accepts repentance from His obedient ones, effaces evil deeds, and knows what they do.
وهو الذي يقبل التوبة عن عباده ويعفوا عن السيات ويعلم ما تفعلونHe answers those who have believed and done righteous deeds, and increases them out of His favor;
ويستجيب الذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت ويزيدهم من فضلهwhile those who disown will have a severe punishment.
والكفرون لهم عذاب شديدAnd were God to extend provision abundantly to His obedient ones, they would commit aggression on the earth;
ولو بسط الله الرزق لعباده لبغوا في الارضbut He sends down in due measure what He wills.
ولكن ينزل بقدر ما يشاءHe is indeed, toward His obedient ones, Informed, the One who sees perfectly.
انه بعباده خبير بصيرIt is He who sends down the saving rain after they have lost heart, and who spreads out His benevolence;
وهو الذي ينزل الغيث من بعد ما قنطوا وينشر رحمتهand He is the Protector, the Praiseworthy.
وهو الولي الحميدAnd among His signs: the creation of the heavens and the earth, and whatever living beings He has scattered throughout them;
ومن ءايته خلق السموت والارض وما بث فيهما من دابةand He is able to gather them together, whenever He wills.
وهو على جمعهم اذا يشاء قديرAnd whatever affliction befalls you is because of what your own hands have earned — and He effaces much.
وما اصبكم من مصيبة فبما كسبت ايديكم ويعفوا عن كثيرYou cannot render [Him] powerless on the earth,
وما انتم بمعجزين في الارضand you have, besides God, neither protector nor helper.
وما لكم من دون الله من ولي ولا نصيرAnd among His signs: the [ships] that run upon the sea like mountains.
ومن ءايته الجوار في البحر كالاعلمIf He wills, He stills the wind, and they remain motionless upon its surface — surely in that are signs for every very patient, very grateful one — or He causes them to perish because of what they have earned, while pardoning much.
ان يشا يسكن الريح فيظللن رواكد على ظهره ان في ذلك لءايت لكل صبار شكور او يوبقهن بما كسبوا ويعف عن كثير— so that those who argue about Our signs may know that they have no escape.
ويعلم الذين يجدلون في ءايتنا ما لهم من محيصWhatever you have been given is only the enjoyment of the present life;
فما اوتيتم من شىء فمتع الحيوة الدنياbut what is with God is better and more lasting, for those who believe and rely upon their Guardian;
وما عند الله خير وابقى للذين ءامنوا وعلى ربهم يتوكلونfor those who avoid grave transgressions and indecencies, and who, when angered, forgive;
والذين يجتنبون كبير الاثم والفوحش واذا ما غضبوا هم يغفرونfor those who answer their Guardian, maintain the Contact, conduct their affairs by mutual consultation, and spend from what We have provided them;
والذين استجابوا لربهم واقاموا الصلوة وامرهم شورى بينهم ومما رزقنهم ينفقونfor those who, when aggression befalls them, defend themselves.
والذين اذا اصابهم البغي هم ينتصرونThe recompense of an evil is an evil equal to it;
وجزوا سيية سيية مثلهاbut whoever effaces and reconciles, his reward is upon God —
فمن عفا واصلح فاجره على اللهHe does not love the wrongdoers.
انه لا يحب الظلمينAnd whoever defends himself after having suffered injustice, against such there is no course [of blame];
ولمن انتصر بعد ظلمه فاوليك ما عليهم من سبيلblame lies only upon those who wrong people and commit aggression on the earth without right.
انما السبيل على الذين يظلمون الناس ويبغون في الارض بغير الحقThose are the ones who will have a painful punishment.
اوليك لهم عذاب اليمAnd whoever endures patiently and forgives, that is surely among matters of firm resolve.
ولمن صبر وغفر ان ذلك لمن عزم الامورAnd whoever God leaves astray has no protector after that.
ومن يضلل الله فما له من ولي من بعدهYou will see the wrongdoers, when they see the punishment, saying: "Is there any way back?"
وترى الظلمين لما راوا العذاب يقولون هل الى مرد من سبيلYou will see them exposed before it, humble,
وترىهم يعرضون عليها خشعينlooking with a furtive glance, out of humiliation.
من الذل ينظرون من طرف خفيAnd those who have believed will say: "The true losers are those who have lost themselves and their families on the Day of Appearance."
وقال الذين ءامنوا ان الخسرين الذين خسروا انفسهم واهليهم يوم القيمةIs it not true that the wrongdoers are in lasting punishment?
الا ان الظلمين في عذاب مقيمThey will have no allies to help them, besides God.
وما كان لهم من اولياء ينصرونهم من دون اللهAnd whoever God leaves astray has no way at all.
ومن يضلل الله فما له من سبيلAnswer your Guardian before there comes a Day that God will not turn back;
استجيبوا لربكم من قبل ان ياتي يوم لا مرد له من اللهyou will have no refuge on that Day,
ما لكم من ملجا يوميذand you will have no way to deny [it].
وما لكم من نكيرIf they turn away, [know that] We have not sent you as a guardian over them;
فان اعرضوا فما ارسلنك عليهم حفيظاupon you rests only the transmission.
ان عليك الا البلغAnd when We let the human being taste a benevolence from Us, he rejoices in it;
وانا اذا اذقنا الانسن منا رحمة فرح بهاbut if an evil befalls them because of what their hands have prepared, then the human being is greatly given to disowning.
وان تصبهم سيية بما قدمت ايديهم فان الانسن كفورTo God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth;
لله ملك السموت والارضHe creates what He wills;
يخلق ما يشاءHe grants, to whom He wills, daughters, and He grants, to whom He wills, sons, or He pairs them, males and females, and He renders barren whom He wills.
يهب لمن يشاء انثا ويهب لمن يشاء الذكور او يزوجهم ذكرانا وانثا ويجعل من يشاء عقيماHe is indeed All-Knowing, Able.
انه عليم قديرIt is not for any human that God should speak to him, except by revelation, or from behind a veil, or by sending a messenger who reveals, by His leave, what He wills;
وما كان لبشر ان يكلمه الله الا وحيا او من وراي حجاب او يرسل رسولا فيوحي باذنه ما يشاءHe is indeed the Most High, the Wise.
انه علي حكيمThus have We revealed to you an Influx from Our own command;
وكذلك اوحينا اليك روحا من امرناyou did not know what the Scripture was, nor faith, but We made it a light by which We guide whom We will among Our obedient ones;
ما كنت تدري ما الكتب ولا الايمن ولكن جعلنه نورا نهدي به من نشاء من عبادناand you surely guide to a straight path — the path of God, to whom belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth.
وانك لتهدي الى صرط مستقيم صرط الله الذي له ما في السموت وما في الارضIs it not true that to God all affairs return?
الا الى الله تصير الامور
