Sourate An-Najm (53) unvowelled

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Benevolent. By the star when it sets: your companion has not strayed, nor has he erred. He does not speak from emotion — it is nothing but a revelation revealed.i 4

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم والنجم اذا هوى ما ضل صاحبكم وما غوى وما ينطق عن الهوى ان هو الا وحي يوحى

One of intense strength, of sound vigor, taught him, 6

علمه شديد القوى ذو مرة

then he appeared in his full stature, at the highest horizon. 7

فاستوى وهو بالافق الاعلى

Then he drew near, and came closer still, until he was at the distance of two bow-lengths, or nearer. 9

ثم دنا فتدلى فكان قاب قوسين او ادنى

He then revealed to His obedient one what He revealed. 10

فاوحى الى عبده ما اوحى

The Conscience did not lie about what it saw.i 11

ما كذب الفواد ما راى

Will you then dispute with him over what he sees? 12

افتمرونه على ما يرى

He saw him, in truth, another time, near the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary — near which lies the Garden of Refuge — when the Lote Tree was enveloped by what enveloped it. 16

ولقد رءاه نزلة اخرى عند سدرة المنتهى عندها جنة الماوى اذ يغشى السدرة ما يغشى

The gaze did not turn aside, nor did it transgress. 17

ما زاغ البصر وما طغى

He saw, in truth, one of the greatest signs of his Guardian. 18

لقد راى من ءايت ربه الكبرى

Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-Uzza, and Manat, the third, the other? Would the male be for you, and for Him the female? 21

افرءيتم اللت والعزى ومنوة الثالثة الاخرى الكم الذكر وله الانثى

That, then, would be an unjust division. 22

تلك اذا قسمة ضيزى

They are nothing but names you have invented, you and your forefathers; God has sent down no authority for them. 23

ان هي الا اسماء سميتموها انتم وءاباوكم ما انزل الله بها من سلطن

They follow nothing but conjecture, and what the Selves desire. 23

ان يتبعون الا الظن وما تهوى الانفس

Though guidance has indeed come to them from their Guardian. 23

ولقد جاءهم من ربهم الهدى

Or does the human being get whatever he wishes? 24

ام للانسن ما تمنى

For to God belong the last and the first. 25

فلله الءاخرة والاولى

How many Agents are there in the heavens whose intercession avails nothing, except after God has permitted it, for whom He wills and approves.i 26

وكم من ملك في السموت لا تغني شفعتهم شيا الا من بعد ان ياذن الله لمن يشاء ويرضى

Those who do not believe in the Hereafter indeed give the Agents archetypes of the feminine.i 27

ان الذين لا يومنون بالءاخرة ليسمون المليكة تسمية الانثى

Yet they have no knowledge of it. 28

وما لهم به من علم

They follow nothing but conjecture. 28

ان يتبعون الا الظن

And conjecture avails nothing against the truth. 28

وان الظن لا يغني من الحق شيا

So turn away from whoever has turned away from Our Reminder and desired nothing but the present life. 29

فاعرض عن من تولى عن ذكرنا ولم يرد الا الحيوة الدنيا

That is the extent of their knowledge. 30

ذلك مبلغهم من العلم

Your Guardian indeed knows best who has strayed from His way, 30

ان ربك هو اعلم بمن ضل عن سبيله

and He knows best who has been guided. 30

وهو اعلم بمن اهتدى

To God belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth, so that He may recompense those who did evil for what they did, and recompense those who did good with the best [reward]. 31

ولله ما في السموت وما في الارض ليجزي الذين اسوا بما عملوا ويجزي الذين احسنوا بالحسنى

Those who avoid the major transgressions and indecencies, except minor lapses. 32

الذين يجتنبون كبير الاثم والفوحش الا اللمم

Your Guardian is indeed vast in forgiveness. 32

ان ربك وسع المغفرة

He knows you best, when He brought you forth from the earth, and when you were embryos in your mothers' wombs. 32

هو اعلم بكم اذ انشاكم من الارض واذ انتم اجنة في بطون امهتكم

So do not claim yourselves to be pure.i 32

فلا تزكوا انفسكم

He knows best who has remained mindful. 32

هو اعلم بمن اتقى

Have you then seen the one who turned away, gave a little, then stopped? 34

افرءيت الذي تولى واعطى قليلا واكدى

Does he have knowledge of what escapes the senses, so that he sees?i 35

اعنده علم الغيب فهو يرى

Or has he not been informed of what is in the pages of Moussa, and of Ibrahim, who fulfilled [his mission]: that no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another,i 38

ام لم ينبا بما في صحف موسى وابرهيم الذي وفى الا تزر وازرة وزر اخرى

and that the human being will have nothing but what he strove for, 39

وان ليس للانسن الا ما سعى

and that his effort will soon be shown, 40

وان سعيه سوف يرى

then he will be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense, 41

ثم يجزىه الجزاء الاوفى

and that to your Guardian is the final boundary, 42

وان الى ربك المنتهى

and that it is He who causes laughter and weeping, 43

وانه هو اضحك وابكى

and that it is He who causes death and gives life, 44

وانه هو امات واحيا

and that He created the two mates, the male and the female, from a drop of fluid when it is deposited, 46

وانه خلق الزوجين الذكر والانثى من نطفة اذا تمنى

and that upon Him rests the other genesis, 47

وان عليه النشاة الاخرى

and that it is He who enriched and granted lasting possession, 48

وانه هو اغنى واقنى

and that it is He, the Guardian of Sirius, 49

وانه هو رب الشعرى

and that He destroyed the Recidivists [Aad], the first, and Thamud, leaving nothing behind, and the people of Nuh before that —i 52

وانه اهلك عادا الاولى وثمودا فما ابقى وقوم نوح من قبل

for they were, indeed, more unjust and more transgressing. 52

انهم كانوا هم اظلم واطغى

And the overturned [city], He cast it down.i 53

والموتفكة اهوى

Then covered it with what covered it. 54

فغشىها ما غشى

So which of your Guardian's favors do you doubt? 55

فباى ءالاء ربك تتمارى

This is a warner among the warners of old. 56

هذا نذير من النذر الاولى

The Imminent has drawn near. 57

ازفت الءازفة

None besides God can unveil it. 58

ليس لها من دون الله كاشفة

Is it then this discourse that you marvel at, laughing, not weeping, while you remain heedless? 61

افمن هذا الحديث تعجبون وتضحكون ولا تبكون وانتم سمدون

So prostrate to God, and obey [Him]. 62

فاسجدوا لله واعبدوا
