Sourate Al-Waqi'a (56) unvowelled

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. When the Event occurs, none will be able to deny its coming.i 2

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم اذا وقعت الواقعة ليس لوقعتها كاذبة

Abasing [some], exalting [others] — when the earth is shaken with a violent shaking, and the mountains are crushed to powder, becoming scattered dust, and you become three categories. 7

خافضة رافعة اذا رجت الارض رجا وبست الجبال بسا فكانت هباء منبثا وكنتم ازوجا ثلثة

The companions of the right — what are the companions of the right? 8

فاصحب الميمنة ما اصحب الميمنة

And the companions of the left — what are the companions of the left? 9

واصحب المشمة ما اصحب المشمة

And the foremost, the foremost... 10

والسبقون السبقون

Those are the ones brought near, in the gardens of bliss. 12

اوليك المقربون في جنت النعيم

A multitude from the first [generations] and few from the last, on woven couches, reclining on them, face to face. 16

ثلة من الاولين وقليل من الءاخرين على سرر موضونة متكين عليها متقبلين

Around them will circulate youths of eternal freshness, with cups, ewers, and a cup [drawn] from a gushing spring — from which they will neither ache nor be intoxicated — and fruit of their choosing, and the flesh of birds that they desire.i 21

يطوف عليهم ولدن مخلدون باكواب واباريق وكاس من معين لا يصدعون عنها ولا ينزفون وفكهة مما يتخيرون ولحم طير مما يشتهون

And companions of listening and support, like well-guarded pearls, in reward for what they used to do.i 24

وحور عين كامثل اللولو المكنون جزاء بما كانوا يعملون

They will hear therein no vain talk and no incitement to transgression. 25

لا يسمعون فيها لغوا ولا تاثيما

Only the saying: "Peace, peace." 26

الا قيلا سلما سلما

And the companions of the right — what are the companions of the right? 27

واصحب اليمين ما اصحب اليمين

Among thornless lote trees, and clustered banana trees, extended shade, flowing water, abundant fruit neither cut off nor forbidden, and raised couches. 34

في سدر مخضود وطلح منضود وظل ممدود وماء مسكوب وفكهة كثيرة لا مقطوعة ولا ممنوعة وفرش مرفوعة

We produced them in a [new] production, and made them beings inaugural, loving, fertile and of shared stock, for the companions of the right.i 38

انا انشانهن انشاء فجعلنهن ابكارا عربا اترابا لاصحب اليمين

A multitude from the first [generations] and a multitude from the last. 40

ثلة من الاولين وثلة من الءاخرين

And the companions of the left — what are the companions of the left? 41

واصحب الشمال ما اصحب الشمال

In scorching wind, and boiling water, and a shade of black smoke — neither cool nor pleasant. 44

في سموم وحميم وظل من يحموم لا بارد ولا كريم

Indeed, they lived before that in [heedless] ease. 45

انهم كانوا قبل ذلك مترفين

And they used to persist in the great transgression. 46

وكانوا يصرون على الحنث العظيم

And they used to say: "When we are dead and become earth and bones, will we truly be raised up? Or our forefathers?" 48

وكانوا يقولون ايذا متنا وكنا ترابا وعظما اءنا لمبعوثون اوءاباونا الاولون

Say: "Indeed, the first and the last will surely be gathered together at the appointed time of a known day." 50

قل ان الاولين والءاخرين لمجموعون الى ميقت يوم معلوم

Then indeed you, O astray, denying ones, will eat from the tree of Zaqqum, and fill your bellies with it, and drink on top of it boiling water, drinking as thirsty camels drink. 55

ثم انكم ايها الضالون المكذبون لءاكلون من شجر من زقوم فمالون منها البطون فشربون عليه من الحميم فشربون شرب الهيم

This is their welcome on the Day of Reckoning.i 56

هذا نزلهم يوم الدين

It is We who created you. 57

نحن خلقنكم

So why do you not believe? 57

فلولا تصدقون

Have you considered that which you emit? Is it you who create it, or are We the Creator? 59

افرءيتم ما تمنون ءانتم تخلقونه ام نحن الخلقون

It is We who have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outrun in replacing you with your likenesses and producing you in that which you do not know. 61

نحن قدرنا بينكم الموت وما نحن بمسبوقين على ان نبدل امثلكم وننشيكم في ما لا تعلمون

And you have already known the first creation. 62

ولقد علمتم النشاة الاولى

So why do you not remember? 62

فلولا تذكرون

Have you considered that which you sow? Is it you who make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64

افرءيتم ما تحرثون ءانتم تزرعونه ام نحن الزرعون

If We willed, We could make it debris, and you would remain lamenting: "We are indeed ruined! Rather, we are dispossessed." 67

لو نشاء لجعلنه حطما فظلتم تفكهون انا لمغرمون بل نحن محرومون

Have you considered the water that you drink? Is it you who sent it down from the clouds, or are We the Sender? 69

افرءيتم الماء الذي تشربون ءانتم انزلتموه من المزن ام نحن المنزلون

If We willed, We could make it bitter/salty. 70

لو نشاء جعلنه اجاجا

So why are you not grateful? 70

فلولا تشكرون

Have you considered the fire that you kindle? Is it you who caused its tree to grow, or are We the Grower? 72

افرءيتم النار التي تورون ءانتم انشاتم شجرتها ام نحن المنشون

We made it a reminder and a benefit for the travelers. 73

نحن جعلنها تذكرة ومتعا للمقوين

So glorify the Name of your Guardian, the Immense. 74

فسبح باسم ربك العظيم

No! I swear by the positions of the stars — and indeed, it is a great oath, if you but knew — indeed, it is a noble Recitation, in a well-guarded scripture, which none touch except the purified.i 79

فلا اقسم بموقع النجوم وانه لقسم لو تعلمون عظيم انه لقرءان كريم في كتب مكنون لا يمسه الا المطهرون

A revelation from the Guardian of all beings.i 80

تنزيل من رب العلمين

Is it this discourse that you treat with disdain, and do you make your denial [your response to your] provision? 82

افبهذا الحديث انتم مدهنون وتجعلون رزقكم انكم تكذبون

Then why, when [the soul] reaches the throat, and you at that moment are looking on, and We are nearer to it than you, but you do not see — then why, if you were not subject to reckoning, do you not bring it back, if you are truthful?i 87

فلولا اذا بلغت الحلقوم وانتم حينيذ تنظرون ونحن اقرب اليه منكم ولكن لا تبصرون فلولا ان كنتم غير مدينين ترجعونها ان كنتم صدقين

As for the one who is among those brought near: rest, and fragrance, and a garden of bliss. 89

فاما ان كان من المقربين فروح وريحان وجنت نعيم

As for the one who is among the companions of the right: "Peace to you," from the companions of the right. 91

واما ان كان من اصحب اليمين فسلم لك من اصحب اليمين

As for the one who is among the denying, astray ones: a welcome of boiling water, and burning in the Blazing Fire. 94

واما ان كان من المكذبين الضالين فنزل من حميم وتصلية جحيم

Indeed, this is the truth of certainty. 95

ان هذا لهو حق اليقين

So glorify the Name of your Guardian, the Immense. 96

فسبح باسم ربك العظيم
