Sourate Al-Mumtahana (60) unvowelled

In the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Benevolent. O you who believe! Do not take My enemy and your enemy as allies,i 1

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم يايها الذين ءامنوا لا تتخذوا عدوي وعدوكم اولياء

showing them affection, while they have denied the truth that has come to you, 1

تلقون اليهم بالمودة وقد كفروا بما جاءكم من الحق

driving out the Messenger and yourselves, [only] because you believe in God, your Guardian. 1

يخرجون الرسول واياكم ان تومنوا بالله ربكم

If you went forth to strive in My way and seek My pleasure, [do not ally with them] confiding your affection to them secretly, while I know best what you conceal and what you reveal. 1

ان كنتم خرجتم جهدا في سبيلي وابتغاء مرضاتي تسرون اليهم بالمودة وانا اعلم بما اخفيتم وما اعلنتم

And whoever among you does this has strayed from the right path. 1

ومن يفعله منكم فقد ضل سواء السبيل

If they gain the upper hand over you, they will be enemies to you, and extend against you their hands and their tongues with evil, 2

ان يثقفوكم يكونوا لكم اعداء ويبسطوا اليكم ايديهم والسنتهم بالسوء

and they wish that you would deny. 2

وودوا لو تكفرون

Neither your kinship nor your children will benefit you at all — 3

لن تنفعكم ارحامكم ولا اولدكم

on the Day of Appearance He will separate you.i 3

يوم القيمة يفصل بينكم

And God is Perfectly Seeing of what you do. 3

والله بما تعملون بصير

You have had a good example in Ibrahim and those with him, when they said to their people: We disavow you and what you obey besides God; we disown you, and there has appeared between us and you enmity and hatred forever, until you believe in God alone — except the saying of Ibrahim to his father: I will surely ask forgiveness for you, though I have no power for you against God.i 4

قد كانت لكم اسوة حسنة في ابرهيم والذين معه اذ قالوا لقومهم انا برءوا منكم ومما تعبدون من دون الله كفرنا بكم وبدا بيننا وبينكم العدوة والبغضاء ابدا حتى تومنوا بالله وحده الا قول ابرهيم لابيه لاستغفرن لك وما املك لك من الله من شىء

Our Guardian, in You we place our trust, and to You we turn, and to You is the final return. 4

ربنا عليك توكلنا واليك انبنا واليك المصير

Our Guardian, do not make us a trial for those who deny, 5

ربنا لا تجعلنا فتنة للذين كفروا

and forgive us, our Guardian. 5

واغفر لنا ربنا

You are indeed the All-Powerful, the Wise.i 5

انك انت العزيز الحكيم

You have indeed had in them a good example, for whoever hopes for God and the Last Day. 6

لقد كان لكم فيهم اسوة حسنة لمن كان يرجوا الله واليوم الءاخر

And whoever turns away — indeed God is the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy. 6

ومن يتول فان الله هو الغني الحميد

It may be that God will place affection between you and those you have held as enemies among them, 7

عسى الله ان يجعل بينكم وبين الذين عاديتم منهم مودة

and God is Powerful, 7

والله قدير

and God is Forgiving, benevolent. 7

والله غفور رحيم

God does not forbid you from being kind and just to those who did not fight you concerning the Law and did not expel you from your homes. 8

لا ينهىكم الله عن الذين لم يقتلوكم في الدين ولم يخرجوكم من ديركم ان تبروهم وتقسطوا اليهم

Indeed, God loves those who are just. 8

ان الله يحب المقسطين

God only forbids you from taking as allies those who fought you concerning the Law, expelled you from your homes, and supported your expulsion. 9

انما ينهىكم الله عن الذين قتلوكم في الدين واخرجوكم من ديركم وظهروا على اخراجكم ان تولوهم

And whoever allies with them — those are the wrongdoers. 9

ومن يتولهم فاوليك هم الظلمون

O you who believe! When believing women come to you as emigrants, test them. 10

يايها الذين ءامنوا اذا جاءكم المومنت مهجرت فامتحنوهن

God knows best their faith. 10

الله اعلم بايمنهن

If you know them to be believers, do not return them to those who deny. 10

فان علمتموهن مومنت فلا ترجعوهن الى الكفار

They are not lawful for them, nor are they lawful for them. 10

لا هن حل لهم ولا هم يحلون لهن

And give them what they have spent. 10

وءاتوهم ما انفقوا

There is no blame upon you in marrying them when you give them their due compensation. 10

ولا جناح عليكم ان تنكحوهن اذا ءاتيتموهن اجورهن

And do not hold to the marriage ties of those who conceal [the truth]. 10

ولا تمسكوا بعصم الكوافر

Ask for what you have spent, and let them ask for what they have spent. 10

وسلوا ما انفقتم وليسلوا ما انفقوا

That is the judgment of God; He judges between you. 10

ذلكم حكم الله يحكم بينكم

And God is Knowing, Wise. 10

والله عليم حكيم

And if any of your wives escape from you to those who deny, and you obtain compensation, then give those whose wives have gone the equivalent of what they had spent. 11

وان فاتكم شىء من ازوجكم الى الكفار فعاقبتم فاتوا الذين ذهبت ازوجهم مثل ما انفقوا

And guard yourselves before God, in whom you believe.i 11

واتقوا الله الذي انتم به مومنون

O Prophet! When believing women come to you to pledge allegiance to you that they will not associate anything with God, not steal, not commit adultery, not kill their children, not bring forth slander they have invented between their hands and feet, and not disobey you in what is recognized, accept their pledge and ask God's forgiveness for them.i 12

يايها النبي اذا جاءك المومنت يبايعنك على ان لا يشركن بالله شيا ولا يسرقن ولا يزنين ولا يقتلن اولدهن ولا ياتين ببهتن يفترينه بين ايديهن وارجلهن ولا يعصينك في معروف فبايعهن واستغفر لهن الله

Indeed, God is Forgiving, benevolent. 12

ان الله غفور رحيم

O you who believe! Do not take as allies a people with whom God is angry, who have despaired of the Hereafter, just as those who deny have despaired of the companions of the graves. 13

يايها الذين ءامنوا لا تتولوا قوما غضب الله عليهم قد ييسوا من الءاخرة كما ييس الكفار من اصحب القبور
