Sourate An-Nazi'at (79) unvowelled

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. By those who tear away violently, those who release gently, those who glide swiftly, those who race ahead, those who govern the affair — the Day the first quaking quakes, followed by the one that comes after,i 7

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم والنزعت غرقا والنشطت نشطا والسبحت سبحا فالسبقت سبقا فالمدبرت امرا يوم ترجف الراجفة تتبعها الرادفة

cores, that Day, will tremble, their eyes humbled. 9

قلوب يوميذ واجفة ابصرها خشعة

They say, "Are we indeed to be returned to our former state, once we have become decayed bones?" 11

يقولون اءنا لمردودون في الحافرة اءذا كنا عظما نخرة

They say, "That, then, would be a losing return!" Yet it will be but a single blast, and there they are, upon the surface of the earth. 14

قالوا تلك اذا كرة خاسرة فانما هي زجرة وحدة فاذا هم بالساهرة

Has the story of Moussa reached you? When his Guardian called him in the sacred valley of Tuwa,i 16

هل اتىك حديث موسى اذ نادىه ربه بالواد المقدس طوى

"Go to Fir'awn; indeed, he has transgressed all bounds. And say to him, 'Would you [be willing] to purify yourself, that I may guide you to your Guardian, so that you may hold Him in awe?'"i 19

اذهب الى فرعون انه طغى فقل هل لك الى ان تزكى واهديك الى ربك فتخشى

So he showed him the greatest sign; but he denied and disobeyed. Then he turned his back, striving, and gathered [his people], and called out, and said, "I am your guardian, the most high." So God seized him with the punishment of the last and the first. 25

فارىه الءاية الكبرى فكذب وعصى ثم ادبر يسعى فحشر فنادى فقال انا ربكم الاعلى فاخذه الله نكال الءاخرة والاولى

Indeed, in that is a lesson for whoever holds [Him] in awe. 26

ان في ذلك لعبرة لمن يخشى

Are you more difficult to create, or is the sky? 27

ءانتم اشد خلقا ام السماء

He built it, raised its vault, and balanced it; and He darkened its night and brought forth its morning light. 29

بنىها رفع سمكها فسوىها واغطش ليلها واخرج ضحىها

And the earth, after that, He spread out; He brought forth from it its water and its pasture, and the mountains, He set them firm — as provision for you and your livestock. 33

والارض بعد ذلك دحىها اخرج منها ماءها ومرعىها والجبال ارسىها متعا لكم ولانعمكم

Then, when the greatest Overwhelming Event comes — the Day man will remember what he strove for, and the Blaze will be laid open for all to see,i 36

فاذا جاءت الطامة الكبرى يوم يتذكر الانسن ما سعى وبرزت الجحيم لمن يرى

as for him who transgressed and preferred the present life, then the Blaze will be his refuge;i 39

فاما من طغى وءاثر الحيوة الدنيا فان الجحيم هي الماوى

but as for him who feared standing before his Guardian, and turned the Self away from following emotion over reason, then the Garden will be his refuge. 41

واما من خاف مقام ربه ونهى النفس عن الهوى فان الجنة هي الماوى

They ask you about the Hour, when it shall anchor. 42

يسلونك عن الساعة ايان مرسىها

What have you to do with mentioning it? 43

فيم انت من ذكرىها

To your Guardian is its final end. 44

الى ربك منتهىها

You are only the warner of whoever holds it in awe. 45

انما انت منذر من يخشىها

It will seem to them, the Day they see it, as though they had remained no more than an evening, or its morning. 46

كانهم يوم يرونها لم يلبثوا الا عشية او ضحىها
