Sourate Al-Balad (90) unvowelled

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. No! I swear by this city, and you are a resident in it, and by a father and what he begot! We have certainly created man in hardship.i 4

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم لا اقسم بهذا البلد وانت حل بهذا البلد ووالد وما ولد لقد خلقنا الانسن في كبد

Does he think that no one will ever have power over him? He says, "I have squandered vast wealth!" 6

ايحسب ان لن يقدر عليه احد يقول اهلكت مالا لبدا

Does he think that no one has seen him? 7

ايحسب ان لم يره احد

Have We not assigned him two eyes, a tongue, and two lips, and guided him to the two paths? 10

الم نجعل له عينين ولسانا وشفتين وهدينه النجدين

But he has not plunged into the steep path. 11

فلا اقتحم العقبة

And what can make you know what the steep path is? 12

وما ادرىك ما العقبة

It is freeing someone from a crushing debt, or feeding, on a day of hunger, an orphan near of kin, or a destitute person in privation.i 16

فك رقبة او اطعم في يوم ذي مسغبة يتيما ذا مقربة او مسكينا ذا متربة

Then, it is being of those who believe and enjoin one another to patience, and enjoin one another to benevolence. 17

ثم كان من الذين ءامنوا وتواصوا بالصبر وتواصوا بالمرحمة

Those are the companions of the right. 18

اوليك اصحب الميمنة

But those who denied Our signs, they are the companions of misfortune.i 19

والذين كفروا بايتنا هم اصحب المشمة

Over them will close a fire. 20

عليهم نار موصدة
