Stand Straight
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Ra.
بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم الرA Scripture whose signs have been made firm, then made explicit, from a Wise, Informed One: "Obey none but God; I am for you, from Him, a warner and a bearer of glad tidings; ask forgiveness of your Guardian, then turn back to Him: He will let you enjoy a fine enjoyment until an appointed term, and grant every possessor of favor his favor.
كتب أحكمت ءايته ثم فصلت من لدن حكيم خبير ألا تعبدوا إلا ٱلله إنني لكم منه نذير وبشير وأن ٱستغفروا ربكم ثم توبوا إليه يمتعكم متعا حسنا إلى أجل مسمى ويؤت كل ذي فضل فضلهBut if you turn away, I fear for you the punishment of an immense day."
وإن تولوا فإني أخاف عليكم عذاب يوم كبيرTo God is your return,
إلى ٱلله مرجعكمand He is capable of all things.
وهو على كل شىء قديرIs it not that they fold their chests to hide from Him?
ألآ إنهم يثنون صدورهم ليستخفوا منهIs it not that, when they cover themselves with their garments, He knows what they keep secret and what they disclose?
ألا حين يستغشون ثيابهم يعلم ما يسرون وما يعلنونHe is certainly All-Knowing of what the chests contain.
إنه عليم بذات ٱلصدورThere is no living creature on earth whose provision does not fall to God; He knows its abode and its repository:
وما من دآبة في ٱلأرض إلا على ٱلله رزقها ويعلم مستقرها ومستودعهاeverything is in a clear register.
كل في كتب مبينAnd it is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days, while His Edifice was founded upon the water [as primary matter], so as to test you: which of you acts best.
وهو ٱلذي خلق ٱلسموت وٱلأرض في ستة أيام وكان عرشه على ٱلمآء ليبلوكم أيكم أحسن عملاAnd if you say: "You will be resurrected after death," those who disown will surely say: "This is nothing but a manifest illusion."
ولئن قلت إنكم مبعوثون من بعد ٱلموت ليقولن ٱلذين كفروا إن هذآ إلا سحر مبينAnd if We delay for them the punishment until a counted term, they will surely say: "What holds it back?"
ولئن أخرنا عنهم ٱلعذاب إلى أمة معدودة ليقولن ما يحبسهIs it not that, the day it comes to them, it will not be turned away from them,
ألا يوم يأتيهم ليس مصروفا عنهمand what they used to mock will surround them.
وحاق بهم ما كانوا به يستهزءونAnd if We let the human being taste a benevolence from Us, then withdraw it from him, he becomes indeed hopeless, a great disowner.
ولئن أذقنا ٱلإنسن منا رحمة ثم نزعنها منه إنه ليوس كفورAnd if We let him taste a blessing after adversity has touched him, he will surely say: "The bad deeds have departed from me":
ولئن أذقنه نعمآء بعد ضرآء مسته ليقولن ذهب ٱلسيات عنيhe becomes joyful, full of vanity.
إنه لفرح فخورExcept those who were patient and did righteous deeds: those will have forgiveness and a great reward.
إلا ٱلذين صبروا وعملوا ٱلصلحت أولئك لهم مغفرة وأجر كبيرIt may be that you will leave out part of what is revealed to you, and that your chest will tighten because of it, since they say: "Why has a treasure not been sent down upon him, or why does an Agent not come with him!"
فلعلك تارك بعض ما يوحى إليك وضآئق به صدرك أن يقولوا لولآ أنزل عليه كنز أو جآء معه ملكYou are, yourself, only a warner;
إنمآ أنت نذيرand God is, over everything, a trustee.
وٱلله على كل شىء وكيلOr will they say: "He has invented it"?
أم يقولون ٱفترىهSay: "Then bring ten invented sûrahs resembling it, and call upon whomever you can, besides God, if you are truthful."
قل فأتوا بعشر سور مثله مفتريت وٱدعوا من ٱستطعتم من دون ٱلله إن كنتم صدقينIf they do not answer you, then know that it has been sent down only with God's knowledge, and that there is no deity but Him.
فإلم يستجيبوا لكم فٱعلموا أنمآ أنزل بعلم ٱلله وأن لآ إله إلا هوWill you then be true to God alone?
فهل أنتم مسلمونWhoever wants the present life and its adornment, We pay him in full for his deeds therein, and he will not be wronged in it:
من كان يريد ٱلحيوة ٱلدنيا وزينتها نوف إليهم أعملهم فيها وهم فيها لا يبخسونthose are the ones who will have, in the last life, nothing but the Fire;
أولئك ٱلذين ليس لهم في ٱلءاخرة إلا ٱلنارwhat they fabricated therein will have collapsed,
وحبط ما صنعوا فيهاand what they did will be null and void.
وبطل ما كانوا يعملونIs he who relies on a clear proof from his Guardian, followed by a witness from Him, [like those others]?
أفمن كان على بينة من ربه ويتلوه شاهد منهAnd before him, the Scripture of Moussa, as a reference and a benevolence.
ومن قبله كتب موسى إماما ورحمةThose are the ones who believe in it.
أولئك يؤمنون بهAnd whoever, among the parties, disowns it, the Fire is his appointment:
ومن يكفر به من ٱلأحزاب فٱلنار موعدهSo do not be in doubt about it:
فلا تك في مرية منهit is the truth from your Guardian, but most people do not believe.
إنه ٱلحق من ربك ولكن أكثر ٱلناس لا يؤمنونAnd who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against God?
ومن أظلم ممن ٱفترى على ٱلله كذباThose are the ones who will be presented before their Guardian, and the witnesses will say: "These are the ones who lied against their Guardian!"
أولئك يعرضون على ربهم ويقول ٱلأشهد هؤلآء ٱلذين كذبوا على ربهمIs it not that God's curse falls upon the unjust, those who turn [others] away from God's path and seek to make it crooked, and who disown the last life?
ألا لعنة ٱلله على ٱلظلمين ٱلذين يصدون عن سبيل ٱلله ويبغونها عوجا وهم بٱلءاخرة هم كفرونThose are the ones who, on earth, will not be able to render [Him] powerless, and who will have, besides God, no ally:
أولئك لم يكونوا معجزين في ٱلأرض وما كان لهم من دون ٱلله من أوليآءthe punishment will be doubled for them.
يضعف لهم ٱلعذابThey could neither hear, nor see.
ما كانوا يستطيعون ٱلسمع وما كانوا يبصرونThose are the ones who have lost themselves, and what they invented has strayed away from them.
أولئك ٱلذين خسروا أنفسهم وضل عنهم ما كانوا يفترونThere is no doubt that, in the last life, they are the greatest losers.
لا جرم أنهم في ٱلءاخرة هم ٱلأخسرونThose who have believed, done righteous deeds, and found peace before their Guardian: those are the companions of the Garden,
إن ٱلذين ءامنوا وعملوا ٱلصلحت وأخبتوا إلى ربهم أولئك أصحب ٱلجنةwherein they will remain.
هم فيها خلدونThe example of the two groups is like the blind and the deaf, and the seeing and the hearing:
مثل ٱلفريقين كٱلأعمى وٱلأصم وٱلبصير وٱلسميعare they equal in example?
هل يستويان مثلاWill you not then remember?
أفلا تذكرونWe have indeed sent Nuh to his people:
ولقد أرسلنا نوحا إلى قومه"I am for you a clear warner:
إني لكم نذير مبينobey none but God;
أن لا تعبدوا إلا ٱللهI fear for you the punishment of a painful day."
إني أخاف عليكم عذاب يوم أليمThe court of those who disowned, among his people, said: "We see you only as a human like us, and we see that only those who are, among us, the most abject, followed you, at first glance.
فقال ٱلملأ ٱلذين كفروا من قومه ما نرىك إلا بشرا مثلنا وما نرىك ٱتبعك إلا ٱلذين هم أراذلنا بادي ٱلرأيAnd we see in you no favor over us; we rather think you liars."
وما نرى لكم علينا من فضل بل نظنكم كذبينHe said: "O my people, do you see? If I rely on a clear proof from my Guardian, and He has granted me a benevolence from Him, and it has become obscured for you, shall we impose it upon you while you detest it?
قال يقوم أرءيتم إن كنت على بينة من ربي وءاتىني رحمة من عنده فعميت عليكم أنلزمكموها وأنتم لها كرهونO my people, I do not ask you for any goods for this:
ويقوم لآ أسلكم عليه مالاmy reward is incumbent only upon God.
إن أجري إلا على ٱللهAnd I am not of those who drive away those who believe: they will surely meet their Guardian;
ومآ أنا بطارد ٱلذين ءامنوا إنهم ملقوا ربهمbut I see you a people given to ignorance.
ولكني أرىكم قوما تجهلونO my people, who would help me against God, if I drove them away?
ويقوم من ينصرني من ٱلله إن طردتهمWill you not then remember?
أفلا تذكرونAnd I do not tell you that I hold God's treasures, nor that I know what escapes the senses, nor that I am an Agent;
ولآ أقول لكم عندي خزآئن ٱلله ولآ أعلم ٱلغيب ولآ أقول إني ملكand I do not say, of those your eyes hold in contempt, that God will grant them no good:
ولآ أقول للذين تزدري أعينكم لن يؤتيهم ٱلله خيراGod knows best what is in their Selves.
ٱلله أعلم بما في أنفسهمI would then be among the unjust."
إني إذا لمن ٱلظلمينThey said: "O Nuh, you have indeed argued with us, and multiplied the argument; bring us then what you threaten us with, if you are among the truthful."
قالوا ينوح قد جدلتنا فأكثرت جدلنا فأتنا بما تعدنآ إن كنت من ٱلصدقينHe said: "It is God alone who will bring it to you, if He wills, and you will not be able to render [Him] powerless.
قال إنما يأتيكم به ٱلله إن شآء ومآ أنتم بمعجزينAnd my counsel will be of no use to you, even were I to wish to counsel you, if God wills to mislead you:
ولا ينفعكم نصحي إن أردت أن أنصح لكم إن كان ٱلله يريد أن يغويكمHe is your Guardian,
هو ربكمand to Him you will be returned."
وإليه ترجعونOr will they say: "He has invented it"?
أم يقولون ٱفترىهSay: "If I have invented it, then my own severance falls upon me, and I am clear of your severance."
قل إن ٱفتريته فعلى إجرامي وأنا بريء مما تجرمونAnd it was revealed to Nuh that none of your people will believe anymore, except those who have already believed:
وأوحي إلى نوح أنه لن يؤمن من قومك إلا من قد ءامنso do not grieve over what they were doing.
فلا تبتئس بما كانوا يفعلونAnd build the vessel, under Our eyes and by Our revelation,
وٱصنع ٱلفلك بأعيننا ووحيناand do not speak to Me about those who have been unjust: they will be drowned.
ولا تخطبني في ٱلذين ظلموا إنهم مغرقونHe was building the vessel; and every time a court of his people passed by him, it mocked him.
ويصنع ٱلفلك وكلما مر عليه ملأ من قومه سخروا منهHe said: "If you mock us, we will mock you as you mock."
قال إن تسخروا منا فإنا نسخر منكم كما تسخرونYou will soon know upon whom a punishment comes that covers him with disgrace, and upon whom a lasting punishment falls.
فسوف تعلمون من يأتيه عذاب يخزيه ويحل عليه عذاب مقيمUntil, when Our command came and the oven began to boil over, We said: "Load into it, of every kind, two elements of a pair, and your family, except him against whom the word has already been pronounced, and those who have believed."
حتى إذا جآء أمرنا وفار ٱلتنور قلنا ٱحمل فيها من كل زوجين ٱثنين وأهلك إلا من سبق عليه ٱلقول ومن ءامنAnd only a few had believed with him.
ومآ ءامن معه إلا قليلAnd he said: "Embark therein: in the name of God be its course and its mooring.
وقال ٱركبوا فيها بسم ٱلله مجرىها ومرسىهآMy Guardian is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent."
إن ربي لغفور رحيمAnd it sailed with them amid waves like mountains.
وهي تجري بهم في موج كٱلجبالAnd Nuh called his son, who stood apart: "O my little one, embark with us, and do not be with those who disown."
ونادى نوح ٱبنه وكان في معزل يبنى ٱركب معنا ولا تكن مع ٱلكفرينHe said: "I shall take refuge on a mountain, which will preserve me from the water."
قال ساوي إلى جبل يعصمني من ٱلمآءHe said: "There is no preserver today from God's command, except for him to whom He shows benevolence."
قال لا عاصم ٱليوم من أمر ٱلله إلا من رحمAnd the wave came between them, and he was among the drowned.
وحال بينهما ٱلموج فكان من ٱلمغرقينAnd it was said: "O earth, swallow your water! O sky, hold back!"
وقيل يأرض ٱبلعي مآءك ويسمآء أقلعيAnd the water subsided, the command was fulfilled, and [the vessel] settled on al-Judi.
وغيض ٱلمآء وقضي ٱلأمر وٱستوت على ٱلجوديAnd it was said: "Far removed be the unjust people!"
وقيل بعدا للقوم ٱلظلمينAnd Nuh called upon his Guardian and said: "My Guardian, my son is of my family, and Your promise is truth,
ونادى نوح ربه فقال رب إن ٱبني من أهلي وإن وعدك ٱلحقand You are the most just of judges."
وأنت أحكم ٱلحكمينHe said: "O Nuh, he is not of your family:
قال ينوح إنه ليس من أهلكit is an unrighteous deed.
إنه عمل غير صلحSo do not ask Me about what you have no knowledge of:
فلا تسلن ما ليس لك به علمI exhort you not to be among the ignorant."
إني أعظك أن تكون من ٱلجهلينHe said: "My Guardian, I take refuge with You from asking You about what I have no knowledge of,
قال رب إني أعوذ بك أن أسلك ما ليس لي به علمand if You do not forgive me and show me benevolence, I will be among the losers."
وإلا تغفر لي وترحمني أكن من ٱلخسرينIt was said: "O Nuh, descend with a peace from Us, and blessings upon you and upon communities from those who are with you;
قيل ينوح ٱهبط بسلم منا وبركت عليك وعلى أمم ممن معكand there are communities that We shall let enjoy [life], then a painful punishment from Us will touch them."
وأمم سنمتعهم ثم يمسهم منا عذاب أليمThose are pieces of information about what escapes the senses, which We reveal to you:
تلك من أنبآء ٱلغيب نوحيهآ إليكyou did not know them, neither you nor your people, before this.
ما كنت تعلمهآ أنت ولا قومك من قبل هذاSo be patient:
فٱصبرthe [favorable] outcome belongs to those who guard themselves.
إن ٱلعقبة للمتقينAnd to the Recidivists [Aad], their brother Hud:
وإلى عاد أخاهم هوداhe said: "O my people, obey God: you have no other deity than Him;
قال يقوم ٱعبدوا ٱلله ما لكم من إله غيرهyou are only inventors [of falsehood]."
إن أنتم إلا مفترونO my people, I do not ask you for any reward for this:
يقوم لآ أسلكم عليه أجراmy reward is incumbent only upon Him who originated me.
إن أجري إلا على ٱلذي فطرنيWill you not then reason?
أفلا تعقلونO my people, ask forgiveness of your Guardian, then turn back to Him: He will send upon you the sky abundantly, and add strength to your strength; and do not turn away as severed."
ويقوم ٱستغفروا ربكم ثم توبوا إليه يرسل ٱلسمآء عليكم مدرارا ويزدكم قوة إلى قوتكم ولا تتولوا مجرمينThey said: "O Hud, you have not brought us a clear proof, and we will not abandon our deities on your word, and we do not give you credit.
قالوا يهود ما جئتنا ببينة وما نحن بتاركي ءالهتنا عن قولك وما نحن لك بمؤمنينWe only say that one of our deities has struck you with evil."
إن نقول إلا ٱعترىك بعض ءالهتنا بسوءHe said: "I call God to witness,
قال إني أشهد ٱللهAnd bear witness that I am clear of what you associate besides Him:
وٱشهدوا أني بريء مما تشركون من دونهso scheme against me all together, and give me no respite.
فكيدوني جميعا ثم لا تنظرونI rely upon God, my Guardian and yours:
إني توكلت على ٱلله ربي وربكمthere is no living creature that He does not hold by the forelock.
ما من دآبة إلا هو ءاخذ بناصيتهآMy Guardian is indeed upon a straight path.
إن ربي على صرط مستقيمIf you turn away, I have conveyed to you that with which I was sent to you;
فإن تولوا فقد أبلغتكم مآ أرسلت به إليكمand my Guardian will substitute in your place another people, without your harming Him in anything:
ويستخلف ربي قوما غيركم ولا تضرونه شياmy Guardian watches over everything."
إن ربي على كل شىء حفيظAnd when Our command came, We saved Hud and those who had believed with him, by a benevolence from Us, and We saved them from a harsh punishment.
ولما جآء أمرنا نجينا هودا وٱلذين ءامنوا معه برحمة منا ونجينهم من عذاب غليظAnd such were the Recidivists [Aad]: they stubbornly rejected the signs of their Guardian, disobeyed His messengers, and followed the command of every stubborn tyrant.
وتلك عاد جحدوا بايت ربهم وعصوا رسله وٱتبعوا أمر كل جبار عنيدAnd they were pursued, in the present life, by a curse, and on the Day of Appearance too:
وأتبعوا في هذه ٱلدنيا لعنة ويوم ٱلقيمةIs it not that the Recidivists [Aad] disowned their Guardian?
ألآ إن عادا كفروا ربهمFar removed be the Recidivists [Aad], the people of Hud!
ألا بعدا لعاد قوم هودAnd to the Depleters [Thamud], their brother Salih:
وإلى ثمود أخاهم صلحاhe said: "O my people, obey God: you have no other deity than Him.
قال يقوم ٱعبدوا ٱلله ما لكم من إله غيرهIt is He who brought you forth from the earth and settled you therein to dwell long: so ask His forgiveness, then turn back to Him:
هو أنشأكم من ٱلأرض وٱستعمركم فيها فٱستغفروه ثم توبوا إليهmy Guardian is near, responsive."
إن ربي قريب مجيبThey said: "O Salih, you were among us a hope before this; do you forbid us to obey what our ancestors obeyed? We are indeed in a troubling doubt about what you call us to."
قالوا يصلح قد كنت فينا مرجوا قبل هذآ أتنهىنآ أن نعبد ما يعبد ءابآؤنا وإننا لفي شك مما تدعونآ إليه مريبHe said: "O my people, do you see? If I rely on a clear proof from my Guardian, and He has granted me, from Him, a benevolence, who then would help me against God if I disobeyed Him?
قال يقوم أرءيتم إن كنت على بينة من ربي وءاتىني منه رحمة فمن ينصرني من ٱلله إن عصيتهYou would then only increase my loss.
فما تزيدونني غير تخسيرO my people, this is the she-camel of God, a sign for you:
ويقوم هذه ناقة ٱلله لكم ءايةso let her eat on God's earth,
فذروها تأكل في أرض ٱللهand do her no harm, or a near punishment will seize you."
ولا تمسوها بسوء فيأخذكم عذاب قريبBut they hamstrung her. He then said: "Enjoy yourselves in your dwelling for three days:
فعقروها فقال تمتعوا في داركم ثلثة أيامthat is a promise that will not be belied."
ذلك وعد غير مكذوبWhen Our command came, We saved Salih and those who had believed with him, by a benevolence from Us, and from the disgrace of that day.
فلما جآء أمرنا نجينا صلحا وٱلذين ءامنوا معه برحمة منا ومن خزي يومئذYour Guardian is indeed the Strong, the All-Powerful.
إن ربك هو ٱلقوي ٱلعزيزAnd the Cry seized those who had been unjust, so that they became, in their dwellings, prostrate, as if they had never dwelt there.
وأخذ ٱلذين ظلموا ٱلصيحة فأصبحوا في ديرهم جثمين كأن لم يغنوا فيهآIs it not that the Depleters [Thamud] disowned their Guardian?
ألآ إن ثمودا كفروا ربهمFar removed be the Depleters [Thamud]!
ألا بعدا لثمودAnd Our messengers indeed came to Ibrahim with the glad tidings: they said: "Peace!"
ولقد جآءت رسلنآ إبرهيم بٱلبشرى قالوا سلماHe said: "Peace!"
قال سلمand he did not delay in bringing a roasted calf.
فما لبث أن جآء بعجل حنيذBut when he saw that their hands did not reach it, he found them strange and felt fear of them.
فلما رءآ أيديهم لا تصل إليه نكرهم وأوجس منهم خيفةThey said: "Do not fear:
قالوا لا تخفwe are sent to the people of Lut."
إنآ أرسلنآ إلى قوم لوطAnd his wife, standing, began to laugh;
وٱمرأته قآئمة فضحكتWe then gave her the glad tidings of Ishaq,
فبشرنها بإسحقand, after Ishaq, Yaacoub.
ومن ورآء إسحق يعقوبShe said: "Woe is me! Shall I bear a child, when I am old, and here is my husband, an old man?
قالت يويلتى ءألد وأنا عجوز وهذا بعلي شيخاThat is indeed an astonishing thing!"
إن هذا لشىء عجيبThey said: "Do you marvel at God's command?
قالوا أتعجبين من أمر ٱللهGod's benevolence and His blessings be upon you, people of the house!
رحمت ٱلله وبركته عليكم أهل ٱلبيتHe is praiseworthy, full of glory."
إنه حميد مجيدWhen the fright had left Ibrahim and the glad tidings had come to him, he began to argue with Us about the people of Lut:
فلما ذهب عن إبرهيم ٱلروع وجآءته ٱلبشرى يجدلنا في قوم لوطIbrahim is indeed thoughtful, full of [repentant] sighs, ever turning back [to God].
إن إبرهيم لحليم أوه منيب"O Ibrahim, turn away from this:
يإبرهيم أعرض عن هذآthe command of your Guardian has already come,
إنه قد جآء أمر ربكand an irrevocable punishment surely comes to them."
وإنهم ءاتيهم عذاب غير مردودAnd when Our messengers came to Lut, he was distressed by it, and felt helpless about them, and said: "This is a hard day."
ولما جآءت رسلنا لوطا سيء بهم وضاق بهم ذرعا وقال هذا يوم عصيبAnd his people came to him, rushing, though they had previously been committing evil deeds.
وجآءه قومه يهرعون إليه ومن قبل كانوا يعملون ٱلسياتHe said: "O my people, here are my daughters: they are purer for you; so guard yourselves toward God, and do not disgrace me concerning my guests:
قال يقوم هؤلآء بناتي هن أطهر لكم فٱتقوا ٱلله ولا تخزون في ضيفيis there not among you a reasonable man?"
أليس منكم رجل رشيدThey said: "You already know what right we have over your daughters, and you well know, [right now], what we want."
قالوا لقد علمت ما لنا في بناتك من حق وإنك لتعلم ما نريدHe said: "Would that I had some strength against you, or could take refuge in a strong support!"
قال لو أن لي بكم قوة أو ءاوي إلى ركن شديدThey said: "O Lut, we are the messengers of your Guardian: they will never reach you.
قالوا يلوط إنا رسل ربك لن يصلوا إليكSo depart with your family, at a time of the night, and let none of you turn around, except your wife.
فأسر بأهلك بقطع من ٱليل ولا يلتفت منكم أحد إلا ٱمرأتكWhat befalls them will also befall her.
إنه مصيبها مآ أصابهمTheir appointment is the morning:
إن موعدهم ٱلصبحis the morning not near?"
أليس ٱلصبح بقريبWhen Our command came, We made the top [of their city] its bottom, and rained upon it stones of hardened clay, layered, marked with your Guardian:
فلما جآء أمرنا جعلنا عليها سافلها وأمطرنا عليها حجارة من سجيل منضود مسومة عند ربكand it is not far from the unjust.
وما هي من ٱلظلمين ببعيدAnd to Madyan, their brother Shu'ayb:
وإلى مدين أخاهم شعيباhe said: "O my people, obey God: you have no other deity than Him,
قال يقوم ٱعبدوا ٱلله ما لكم من إله غيرهand do not diminish the measure nor the weight.
ولا تنقصوا ٱلمكيال وٱلميزانI see you in prosperity, and I fear for you the punishment of an encompassing day.
إني أرىكم بخير وإني أخاف عليكم عذاب يوم محيطO my people, give full measure and full weight, with equity,
ويقوم أوفوا ٱلمكيال وٱلميزان بٱلقسطand do not wrong the people in their things, and do not spread corruption on the earth as corrupters.
ولا تبخسوا ٱلناس أشيآءهم ولا تعثوا في ٱلأرض مفسدينWhat remains [licitly] with God is better for you, if you are believers;
بقيت ٱلله خير لكم إن كنتم مؤمنينand I am not, over you, a guardian.
ومآ أنا عليكم بحفيظThey said: "O Shu'ayb, does your Contact command you that we abandon what our ancestors obeyed, or that we stop doing with our goods what we wish?
قالوا يشعيب أصلوتك تأمرك أن نترك ما يعبد ءابآؤنآ أو أن نفعل في أمولنا ما نشؤاYou are indeed, yourself, the thoughtful, the reasonable one!"
إنك لأنت ٱلحليم ٱلرشيدHe said: "O my people, do you see? If I rely on a clear proof from my Guardian, and He has provided me, from Him, with a fine provision...
قال يقوم أرءيتم إن كنت على بينة من ربي ورزقني منه رزقا حسناAnd I do not want to contradict you by doing myself what I turn you away from:
ومآ أريد أن أخالفكم إلى مآ أنهىكم عنهI only want reform, as much as I can;
إن أريد إلا ٱلإصلح ما ٱستطعتand my success rests only with God:
وما توفيقي إلا بٱللهupon Him I rely,
عليه توكلتand to Him I return.
وإليه أنيبO my people, let not your rupture with me draw upon you what befell the people of Nuh, or the people of Hud, or the people of Salih;
ويقوم لا يجرمنكم شقاقي أن يصيبكم مثل مآ أصاب قوم نوح أو قوم هود أو قوم صلحand the people of Lut are not far from you.
وما قوم لوط منكم ببعيدAsk forgiveness of your Guardian, then turn back to Him:
وٱستغفروا ربكم ثم توبوا إليهmy Guardian is Benevolent, full of affection.
إن ربي رحيم ودودThey said: "O Shu'ayb, we do not understand much of what you say, and we indeed see you weak among us; were it not for your clan, we would have banished you; and you have no power over us."
قالوا يشعيب ما نفقه كثيرا مما تقول وإنا لنرىك فينا ضعيفا ولولا رهطك لرجمنك ومآ أنت علينا بعزيزHe said: "O my people, does my clan then weigh more with you than God, whom you have relegated behind your back?
قال يقوم أرهطي أعز عليكم من ٱلله وٱتخذتموه ورآءكم ظهرياMy Guardian indeed encompasses what you do.
إن ربي بما تعملون محيطO my people, act according to your position; I, [too], act:
ويقوم ٱعملوا على مكانتكم إني عملyou will soon know upon whom a punishment falls that covers him with disgrace, and who is a liar.
سوف تعلمون من يأتيه عذاب يخزيه ومن هو كذبSo watch:
وٱرتقبواI watch with you."
إني معكم رقيبAnd when Our command came, We saved Shu'ayb and those who had believed with him, by a benevolence from Us.
ولما جآء أمرنا نجينا شعيبا وٱلذين ءامنوا معه برحمة مناAnd the Cry seized those who had been unjust, so that they became, in their dwellings, prostrate, as if they had never dwelt there.
وأخذت ٱلذين ظلموا ٱلصيحة فأصبحوا في ديرهم جثمين كأن لم يغنوا فيهآFar removed be Madyan, as the Depleters [Thamud] were removed!
ألا بعدا لمدين كما بعدت ثمودWe have indeed sent Moussa with Our signs and manifest authority, to Fir'awn and his court; but they followed the command of Fir'awn,
ولقد أرسلنا موسى بايتنا وسلطن مبين إلى فرعون وملإيه فٱتبعوا أمر فرعونand the command of Fir'awn was not reasonable.
ومآ أمر فرعون برشيدHe will precede his people on the Day of Appearance, and bring them to arrive at the Fire:
يقدم قومه يوم ٱلقيمة فأوردهم ٱلنارwhat a detestable place of arrival to arrive at!
وبئس ٱلورد ٱلمورودAnd they were pursued, here, by a curse, and on the Day of Appearance too:
وأتبعوا في هذه لعنة ويوم ٱلقيمةwhat a detestable gift is that which was given to them!
بئس ٱلرفد ٱلمرفودThose are pieces of information about the cities which We relate to you: some of them remain standing, and others are mown down.
ذلك من أنبآء ٱلقرى نقصه عليك منها قآئم وحصيدAnd We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves:
وما ظلمنهم ولكن ظلموا أنفسهمtheir deities, which they invoked besides God, availed them nothing when your Guardian's command came,
فمآ أغنت عنهم ءالهتهم ٱلتي يدعون من دون ٱلله من شىء لما جآء أمر ربكand they only increased their ruin.
وما زادوهم غير تتبيبSuch is the seizure of your Guardian, when He seizes the cities while they are unjust:
وكذلك أخذ ربك إذآ أخذ ٱلقرى وهي ظلمةHis seizure is indeed painful, severe.
إن أخذه أليم شديدThere is indeed in that a sign for whoever fears the punishment of the last life:
إن في ذلك لءاية لمن خاف عذاب ٱلءاخرةthat is a day on which the people will be gathered,
ذلك يوم مجموع له ٱلناسand that is a witnessed day.
وذلك يوم مشهودAnd We defer it only until a counted term.
وما نؤخره إلا لأجل معدودThe day it comes, no Self will speak without His permission:
يوم يأت لا تكلم نفس إلا بإذنهthere will then be the wretched and the happy.
فمنهم شقي وسعيدAs for those who will be wretched, they will be in the Fire, wherein they will have moaning and sobbing, wherein they will remain as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Guardian wills:
فأما ٱلذين شقوا ففي ٱلنار لهم فيها زفير وشهيق خلدين فيها ما دامت ٱلسموت وٱلأرض إلا ما شآء ربكyour Guardian is indeed ever doing what He wills.
إن ربك فعال لما يريدAnd as for those who will be happy, they will be in the Garden, wherein they will remain as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Guardian wills:
وأما ٱلذين سعدوا ففي ٱلجنة خلدين فيها ما دامت ٱلسموت وٱلأرض إلا ما شآء ربكa gift that will never be cut off.
عطآء غير مجذوذSo do not be in doubt about what those people obey:
فلا تك في مرية مما يعبد هؤلآءthey obey only as their ancestors obeyed before.
ما يعبدون إلا كما يعبد ءابآؤهم من قبلAnd We shall surely give them their share, without any deduction.
وإنا لموفوهم نصيبهم غير منقوصWe have indeed given Moussa the Scripture, and there was divergence about it;
ولقد ءاتينا موسى ٱلكتب فٱختلف فيهand were it not for a word already pronounced by your Guardian, it would have been decided between them;
ولولا كلمة سبقت من ربك لقضي بينهمand they are indeed, about it, in a troubling doubt.
وإنهم لفي شك منه مريبAnd to each, your Guardian will surely pay in full for their deeds:
وإن كلا لما ليوفينهم ربك أعملهمHe is Informed of what they do.
إنه بما يعملون خبيرSo stand straight, as you have been commanded, and those who have turned back [to God] with you, and do not exceed the measure:
فٱستقم كمآ أمرت ومن تاب معك ولا تطغواHe sees perfectly what you do.
إنه بما تعملون بصيرAnd do not lean upon those who have been unjust, or the Fire would touch you,
ولا تركنوا إلى ٱلذين ظلموا فتمسكم ٱلنارand you would have, besides God, no ally,
وما لكم من دون ٱلله من أوليآءthen you would not be helped.
ثم لا تنصرونAnd maintain the Contact at the two ends of the day, and at close moments of the night:
وأقم ٱلصلوة طرفى ٱلنهار وزلفا من ٱليلgood deeds indeed dispel bad ones:
إن ٱلحسنت يذهبن ٱلسياتthat is a reminder for those who remember.
ذلك ذكرى للذكرينAnd be patient:
وٱصبرGod does not let go to waste the reward of those who do good.
فإن ٱلله لا يضيع أجر ٱلمحسنينWere there not, among the generations before you, possessors of a remnant [of virtue] who forbade corruption on earth, except a few among those We saved?
فلولا كان من ٱلقرون من قبلكم أولوا بقية ينهون عن ٱلفساد في ٱلأرض إلا قليلا ممن أنجينا منهمAnd those who were unjust followed what they were indulged in, and became severed.
وٱتبع ٱلذين ظلموا مآ أترفوا فيه وكانوا مجرمينAnd your Guardian was not one to annihilate the cities unjustly, while their inhabitants were reforming.
وما كان ربك ليهلك ٱلقرى بظلم وأهلها مصلحونAnd had your Guardian willed, He would have made the people a single community;
ولو شآء ربك لجعل ٱلناس أمة وحدةbut they do not cease to differ, except those to whom your Guardian shows benevolence,
ولا يزالون مختلفين إلا من رحم ربكand it is for this that He created them.
ولذلك خلقهمAnd the word of your Guardian shall be fulfilled: "I will surely fill Jahannam with the Occulted and humans, all together."
وتمت كلمة ربك لأملأن جهنم من ٱلجنة وٱلناس أجمعينAnd all that We relate to you, among the pieces of information about the messengers, is that by which We make your Conscience firm;
وكلا نقص عليك من أنبآء ٱلرسل ما نثبت به فؤادكand there has come to you, in this, the truth, an admonition, and a reminder for the believers.
وجآءك في هذه ٱلحق وموعظة وذكرى للمؤمنينAnd say to those who do not believe: "Act according to your position; we, [too], act; and wait: we too are waiting."
وقل للذين لا يؤمنون ٱعملوا على مكانتكم إنا عملون وٱنتظروا إنا منتظرونAnd to God belongs what escapes the senses in the heavens and on the earth,
ولله غيب ٱلسموت وٱلأرضand to Him the whole matter returns:
وإليه يرجع ٱلأمر كلهso obey Him, and rely upon Him:
فٱعبده وتوكل عليهyour Guardian is not at all heedless of what you do.
وما ربك بغفل عما تعملون
