Yusuf

The Finest of Accounts

  • In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Ra.

  • These are the signs of the explicit Scripture.

  • We have sent it down as a flawless Recitation, perhaps you will reason.

  • We relate to you the finest of accounts, by revealing to you this Recitation, though you were indeed, before it, among the heedless.

  • [Recall] when Youssof said to his father: "O my father, I saw eleven stars, and the sun and the moon,

  • I saw them prostrate before me."

  • He said: "O my little one, do not relate your vision to your brothers, or they will scheme against you with a scheme:

  • the Diverter is, to the human being, a manifest enemy.

  • And it is thus that your Guardian will elect you and teach you the interpretation of events,

  • and He will complete His blessing upon you and upon the family of Yaacoub, as He completed it before upon your two ancestors, Ibrahim and Ishaq.

  • Your Guardian is indeed All-Knowing, Wise.

  • There were indeed, in Youssof and his brothers, signs for those who ask.

  • [Recall] when they said: "Youssof and his brother are dearer to our father than we, though we are a close-knit group:

  • our father is surely in manifest error.

  • Kill Youssof, or banish him to some land, so that your father's face may be freed for you alone, and that you may be, after that, righteous people."

  • One of them said: "Do not kill Youssof, but throw him into the depths of the well: some travelers will pick him up, if you must act."

  • They said: "O our father, what is it with you, that you do not trust us with Youssof, when we are surely sincere counselors to him?

  • Send him with us tomorrow, that he may enjoy himself and play; we will surely be his guardians."

  • He said: "It surely grieves me that you take him, and I fear the wolf may devour him while you are heedless of him."

  • They said: "If the wolf were to devour him, while we are a close-knit group, we would then surely be losers."

  • When they took him away and agreed to put him in the depths of the well — and We revealed to him: "You will surely inform them of this affair, while they do not suspect it" —

  • they came to their father in the evening, weeping, and said: "O our father, we went off racing and left Youssof with our belongings, and the wolf devoured him."

  • But you will not give us credit, even if we speak the truth.

  • They brought his shirt stained with false blood.

  • He said: "Rather, your Self has suggested a course to you.

  • Beautiful patience!

  • And it is with God that help must be sought against what you describe."

  • Travelers arrived; they sent their water-drawer, who let down his bucket. He said: "Good news! Here is a boy!"

  • They hid him away as merchandise —

  • but God was All-Knowing of what they were doing.

  • And they sold him for a paltry price, a few counted coins: they attached little importance to him.

  • The one who bought him, in Egypt, said to his wife: "Make his stay honorable; perhaps he will be useful to us, or we may adopt him as a son."

  • And thus We established Youssof on that land, and so as to teach him the interpretation of events —

  • God is victorious in His purpose,

  • but most people do not know.

  • And when he reached his full maturity, We gave him judgment and knowledge:

  • thus do We recompense those who do good.

  • She in whose house he was sought to seduce him; she bolted the doors and said: "Come here."

  • He said: "May God preserve me from that!

  • He is indeed my master: he has made my stay excellent:

  • the wrongdoers indeed do not succeed."

  • And she certainly had an intention toward him,

  • and he would have had one toward her, had he not seen a proof of his Guardian:

  • thus it was, so that We might turn away from him evil and indecency:

  • he was indeed among Our purified obedient ones.

  • They both raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from behind, and they found her chief at the door.

  • She said: "What is the recompense of one who intends evil against your family, except prison or a painful punishment?"

  • He said: "It is she who sought to seduce me."

  • A witness from her family bore witness: "If his shirt is torn from the front, she speaks truly, and he is among the liars; but if his shirt is torn from behind, she has lied,

  • and he is among the truthful."

  • When he saw that his shirt was torn from behind, he said: "This is of your scheme, [women]: your scheme is immense.

  • Youssof, turn away from this;

    يوسف أعرض عن هذا
  • and you, ask forgiveness for your offense: you are indeed among those at fault."

  • Women, in the Capital, said: "The wife of the Powerful One is seeking to seduce her young man: he has indeed captivated her with love;

  • we surely see her in manifest error."

  • When she heard of their plot, she invited them and prepared for them something to recline on; she gave each of them a knife, and said [to Youssof]: "Come out before them."

  • When they saw him, they found him so great that they cut their hands, saying: "Far be it from God [such an imperfection]! This is no human:

  • this is nothing but a noble Agent."

  • She said: "This is the one about whom you blamed me.

    قالت فذلكن ٱلذي لمتنني فيه
  • I indeed sought to seduce him, but he absolutely defended himself;

    ولقد رودته عن نفسه فٱستعصم
  • and if he does not do what I order him, he will surely be imprisoned, and will surely be among the diminished."

  • He said: "My Guardian, prison is dearer to me than what they call me to; and if You do not turn their scheme away from me, I would incline toward them and be among the ignorant."

  • His Guardian answered him and turned their scheme away from him:

  • it is indeed He, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

  • Then it seemed good to them, after seeing the signs, to imprison him for a time.

  • Two young men entered the prison with him.

  • One of them said: "I saw myself pressing wine."

  • The other said: "I saw myself carrying bread on my head, from which the birds were eating.

  • Inform us of its interpretation: we indeed see you among those who do good."

  • He said: "No food will be brought to you, destined for you, without my informing you of its interpretation before it reaches you:

  • that is part of what my Guardian has taught me.

  • I have left the doctrine of a people who do not believe in God, and who disown the last life,

  • and I have followed the doctrine of my ancestors, Ibrahim, Ishaq, and Yaacoub:

  • it is not for us to associate anything with God.

  • That is part of God's favor upon us and upon the people,

  • but most people are not grateful.

  • O my two prison companions, are divided masters better, or God, the One, the Subjugator?

  • What you obey, besides Him, is nothing but attributes you have named, you and your ancestors, without God having sent down any authority for it:

  • judgment belongs only to God:

  • He has commanded that you obey none but Him:

  • that is the upright Law,

  • but most people do not know.

    ولكن أكثر ٱلناس لا يعلمون
  • O my two prison companions, one of you will pour wine for his master;

  • as for the other, he will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head.

  • The matter on which you both consulted me is decided."

  • And he said to the one of the two he thought would be saved: "Remember me to your master."

  • But the Diverter made him forget to mention this to his master, and [Youssof] remained in prison for some years.

  • And the king said: "I see seven fat cows being devoured by seven lean ones, and seven green ears of grain and others withered:

  • O court, enlighten me about my vision, if you can cross through visions [to their meaning]."

  • They said: "A jumble of confused dreams,

  • and we are not versed in the interpretation of dreams."

  • The one of the two who had been saved said, remembering after a long while: "I will inform you of its interpretation: so send me forth."

  • "Youssof, man of truth, enlighten us about the seven fat cows devoured by seven lean ones, and the seven green ears of grain and others withered, so that I may return to the people and they may know."

  • He said: "You shall cultivate for seven years, unremittingly;

    قال تزرعون سبع سنين دأبا
  • and what you have harvested, leave it in its ear, except the little that you eat.

  • Then there will come, after that, seven severe years, which will consume what you had prepared for them, except the little you set aside.

  • Then there will come, after that, a year in which the people will be relieved by rain, and in which they will press [the fruits]."

  • And the king said: "Bring him to me."

  • When the messenger came to him, he said: "Return to your master, and ask him about the women who cut their hands:

  • my Guardian is All-Knowing of their scheme."

  • He said: "What was your affair, when you sought to seduce Youssof?"

  • They said: "Far be it from God [such an imperfection]! We know no evil of him."

  • The wife of the Powerful One said: "Now the truth comes out: it is I who sought to seduce him, and he is surely among the truthful.

  • This, so that he may know that I did not betray him in his absence, and that God does not guide the scheme of traitors.

  • And I do not declare my Self clear [of all evil]:

  • the Self surely incites to evil, except one to whom my Guardian shows benevolence.

  • My Guardian is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent."

  • And the king said: "Bring him to me: I shall reserve him exclusively for myself."

  • When he had spoken to him, he said: "You are, today, with us, in a position of authority, trustworthy."

  • He said: "Place me in charge of the treasuries of this land: I am indeed a knowledgeable guardian."

  • And thus We established Youssof on that land, settling there wherever he wished:

  • We grant Our benevolence to whom We will, and We do not let go to waste the reward of those who do good.

  • And the reward of the last life is indeed better for those who believe and guard themselves.

  • The brothers of Youssof came [to Egypt] and entered upon him; he recognized them, but they did not recognize him.

  • When he had provided them with their supplies, he said: "Bring me a brother of yours from your father's side.

  • Do you not see that I give full measure and am the best of those who grant a dwelling?

  • And if you do not bring him to me, you will have no more measure with me, and you shall not approach me again."

  • They said: "We shall seek to obtain him from his father, we shall surely do it."

  • He said to his young men: "Put their merchandise back in their saddlebags, perhaps they will recognize it when they return to their people, perhaps they will come back."

  • When they returned to their father, they said: "O our father, measure has been withheld from us; so send our brother with us, we shall obtain measure, and we shall surely be his guardians."

  • He said: "Shall I trust you with him otherwise than as I trusted you before with his brother?

  • God is the best guardian,

  • and He is the most benevolent of the benevolent."

  • When they opened their belongings, they found their merchandise, which had been returned to them. They said: "O our father, what more could we seek?

  • Here is our merchandise, returned to us; we shall provide for our family, guard our brother, and obtain an extra camel-load:

  • that is an easy measure."

  • He said: "I will not send him with you, until you bring me a solemn engagement before God, that you will bring him back to me, unless you are surrounded."

  • When they had brought him their solemn engagement, he said: "God is trustee over what we say."

  • He said: "O my sons, do not enter by a single gate, but enter by separate gates;

  • I can be of no use to you against God:

  • judgment belongs only to God;

    إن ٱلحكم إلا لله
  • upon Him I rely,

  • and let those who rely [upon God] rely upon Him."

    وعليه فليتوكل ٱلمتوكلون
  • When they entered as their father had commanded them, it was of no use to them against God, except for a need in Yaacoub's Self, which he satisfied;

  • he surely possessed knowledge We had taught him,

  • but most people do not know.

  • When they entered upon Youssof, he took his brother in with him,

  • and said: "I am, indeed, your brother: so do not grieve over what they were doing."

  • When he had provided them with their supplies, he placed the cup in his brother's saddlebag; then a herald proclaimed: "O caravan, you are surely thieves!"

  • They said, turning toward them: "What are you missing?"

    قالوا وأقبلوا عليهم ماذا تفقدون
  • They said: "We are missing the king's measuring vessel;

    قالوا نفقد صواع ٱلملك
  • whoever brings it will have a camel-load, and I stand guarantor for it."

  • They said: "By God, you well know we did not come to spread corruption on this land, and we are not thieves."

  • They said: "What then will be his recompense, if you are liars?"

  • They said: "His recompense: he in whose saddlebag it is found shall himself be the recompense.

  • Thus do we recompense the wrongdoers."

  • He began with their bags before his brother's bag, then drew it out of his brother's bag:

  • thus did We scheme for Youssof:

  • he could not, under the king's law, seize his brother, unless God willed it.

  • We raise in degrees whom We will,

  • and above every possessor of knowledge, there is one [more] knowing.

  • They said: "If he has stolen, a brother of his had already stolen before."

  • Youssof kept this secret within himself and did not reveal it to them;

  • he said: "You are in the worst of positions,

  • and God knows best what you describe."

  • They said: "O Powerful One, he has a very old father; so take one of us in his place: we indeed see you among those who do good."

  • He said: "May God preserve us from taking anyone other than the one with whom we found our belongings: we would then surely be wrongdoers."

  • When they had lost all hope of him, they withdrew into confidential converse.

  • The eldest among them said: "Do you not know that your father took a solemn engagement from you before God,

  • and that before this you failed in your duty toward Youssof?

  • I shall not leave this land, then, until my father permits me, or God judges in my favor:

  • He is the best of judges.

    وهو خير ٱلحكمين
  • Return to your father, and say: 'O our father, your son has stolen;

  • and we attest only to what we know, and we could not guard what escaped the senses.

  • Ask the city where we were, and the caravan with which we returned: we are surely truthful.'"

  • He said: "Rather, your Self has suggested a course to you.

  • Beautiful patience!

  • It may be that God will bring them all back to me:

  • it is indeed He, the All-Knowing, the Wise."

  • And he turned away from them and said: "O my bitterness, for Youssof!"

  • And his eyes turned white from grief, while he suppressed his sorrow.

  • They said: "By God, you will not cease to recall Youssof, until you are worn out or until you perish."

  • He said: "I complain of my anguish and my grief only to God,

  • and I know, from God, what you do not know.

  • O my sons, go and inquire about Youssof and his brother, and do not lose hope of God's rest:

  • none loses hope of God's rest, except the people who disown."

  • When they entered upon him, they said: "O Powerful One, misfortune has touched us and our family, and we have come with merchandise of little value:

  • so give us full measure, and give us alms:

  • God indeed recompenses those who give alms."

  • He said: "Do you know what you did to Youssof and his brother, when you were ignorant?"

  • They said: "Is it you, Youssof?"

  • He said: "I am Youssof, and this is my brother.

  • God has indeed favored us:

  • whoever guards himself and is patient — God does not let go to waste the reward of those who do good."

  • They said: "By God, God has indeed preferred you over us, and we were indeed at fault."

  • He said: "No reproach upon you:

  • today, God forgives you,

  • He is the most benevolent of the benevolent.

  • Go with this shirt of mine, and cast it upon my father's face: he will regain his sight. Then bring me your whole family."

  • When the caravan had set off, their father said: "I surely sense the scent of Youssof, if you do not think me a dotard."

  • They said: "By God, you are surely in your old error."

  • When the bearer of good news arrived, he cast it upon his face, and he at once regained his sight.

  • He said: "Did I not tell you that I know, from God, what you do not know?"

  • They said: "O our father, ask forgiveness for our offenses: we were indeed at fault."

  • He said: "I shall soon ask forgiveness for you from my Guardian:

  • it is indeed He, the Most-Forgiving, the Benevolent."

  • When they entered upon Youssof, he took his two parents in with him, and said: "Enter Egypt, if God wills, in security."

  • And he raised his two parents upon the Edifice, and they fell down before him in prostration.

  • He said: "O my father, this is the interpretation of my vision of old: my Guardian has made it true.

  • He has been good to me, when He brought me out of prison, and brought you from the countryside, after the Diverter had sown discord between me and my brothers.

  • My Guardian is indeed Subtle in what He wills:

  • it is indeed He, the All-Knowing, the Wise.

  • My Guardian, You have granted me a share of sovereignty, and taught me the interpretation of events.

  • Originator of the heavens and the earth, You are my protector in the present life and in the last life: cause me to die true to You alone, and join me with the righteous."

  • That is part of the information about what escapes the senses, which We reveal to you:

  • you were not with them when they resolved their affair while plotting.

  • And most people, however much you may desire it, are not believers.

  • And you ask of them, for this, no reward:

  • it is only a reminder for all beings.

  • How many signs, in the heavens and on the earth, do they pass by, turning away from them!

  • And most of them do not believe in God without associating [others] with Him.

  • Are they then sure that a covering of God's punishment will not come to them, or that the Hour will not come to them suddenly, without their perceiving it?

  • Say: "This is my path: I call to God.

  • With full clear-sightedness, myself and those who follow me.

  • Glory be to God!

  • And I am not among those who associate."

  • And We sent, before you, none but men to whom We revealed, from among the people of the cities.

  • Have they not traveled the earth to see what was the end of those before them?

  • And the abode of the last life is indeed better for those who guarded themselves:

  • will you not then reason?

  • [We sent them] until, when the messengers had lost all hope and thought they had been denied, Our help came to them, and whom We willed was saved,

  • and Our rigor is not turned away from the severed people.

  • There was indeed, in their account, a lesson for the possessors of intelligence:

  • it was not an invented account,

  • but the confirmation of what precedes it, the detail of everything, and a guidance and a benevolence for a people who believe.
