What Is in Themselves
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Mim. Ra.
بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم المرThese are the signs of the Scripture.
تلك ءايت ٱلكتبAnd what has been sent down to you from your Guardian is the truth,
وٱلذي أنزل إليك من ربك ٱلحقbut most people do not believe.
ولكن أكثر ٱلناس لا يؤمنونGod is the One who elevated the heavens without pillars
ٱلله ٱلذي رفع ٱلسموت بغير عمدthat you can see;
ترونهاthen He established Himself upon the Edifice;
ثم ٱستوى على ٱلعرشand He subjected the sun and the moon,
وسخر ٱلشمس وٱلقمرeach running to an appointed term.
كل يجري لأجل مسمىHe governs the Order,
يدبر ٱلأمرHe details the signs, perhaps you will have certainty of the meeting with your Guardian.
يفصل ٱلءايت لعلكم بلقآء ربكم توقنونAnd it is He who spread out the earth, and placed upon it firmly-anchored mountains and rivers;
وهو ٱلذي مد ٱلأرض وجعل فيها روسي وأنهراand of all the fruits, He placed therein two elements of a pair,
ومن كل ٱلثمرت جعل فيها زوجين ٱثنينHe covers the day with the night.
يغشي ٱليل ٱلنهارThere are surely in that signs for a people who reflect.
إن في ذلك لءايت لقوم يتفكرونAnd on the earth, there are neighboring plots, gardens of vines, crops, palms clustered or standing alone, watered by the same water,
وفي ٱلأرض قطع متجورت وجنت من أعنب وزرع ونخيل صنوان وغير صنوان يسقى بمآء وحدand We favor some of them over others in their fare.
ونفضل بعضها على بعض في ٱلأكلThere are surely in that signs for a people who reason.
إن في ذلك لءايت لقوم يعقلونAnd if you marvel, it is marvelous that they say: "Once we are earth, shall we really be in a new creation?"
وإن تعجب فعجب قولهم أءذا كنا تربا أءنا لفي خلق جديدThose are the ones who disown their Guardian,
أولئك ٱلذين كفروا بربهمthose are the ones who will have chains around their necks,
وأولئك ٱلأغلل في أعناقهمthose are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally.
وأولئك أصحب ٱلنار هم فيها خلدونThey ask you to hasten evil before good, though there have already come to pass, before them, exemplary precedents.
ويستعجلونك بٱلسيئة قبل ٱلحسنة وقد خلت من قبلهم ٱلمثلتAnd your Guardian is surely possessed of forgiveness for the people, despite their injustice;
وإن ربك لذو مغفرة للناس على ظلمهمand your Guardian is surely severe in sanction.
وإن ربك لشديد ٱلعقابAnd those who disown say: "Why has a sign not been sent down upon him from his Guardian?"
ويقول ٱلذين كفروا لولآ أنزل عليه ءاية من ربهYou are, yourself, only a warner,
إنمآ أنت منذرand to every people belongs a guide.
ولكل قوم هادGod knows what every female carries, and what the wombs diminish and what they increase;
ٱلله يعلم ما تحمل كل أنثى وما تغيض ٱلأرحام وما تزدادand everything, with Him, is according to a measure.
وكل شىء عنده بمقدارThe Knower of what escapes the senses and of what is witnessed,
علم ٱلغيب وٱلشهدةthe Great, the Supreme.
ٱلكبير ٱلمتعالIt is equal, among you, whether one keeps his saying secret or says it aloud, and whether he hides in the night or moves openly by day.
سوآء منكم من أسر ٱلقول ومن جهر به ومن هو مستخف بٱليل وسارب بٱلنهارHe has, [placed] before him and behind him, relaying watchers, preserving him by God's command.
له معقبت من بين يديه ومن خلفه يحفظونه من أمر ٱللهGod does not change what is in a people until they change what is in themselves;
إن ٱلله لا يغير ما بقوم حتى يغيروا ما بأنفسهمand when God wills harm for a people, nothing can repel it,
وإذآ أراد ٱلله بقوم سوءا فلا مرد لهand they have, besides Him, no protector.
وما لهم من دونه من والIt is He who shows you the lightning, feared and hoped for, and who brings forth the heavy clouds; and the thunder glorifies Him in praise, as do the Agents, out of fear of Him;
هو ٱلذي يريكم ٱلبرق خوفا وطمعا وينشئ ٱلسحاب ٱلثقال ويسبح ٱلرعد بحمده وٱلملئكة من خيفتهand He sends the thunderbolt, and strikes with it whom He wills, while they argue about God; and He is of a formidable rigor.
ويرسل ٱلصوعق فيصيب بها من يشآء وهم يجدلون في ٱلله وهو شديد ٱلمحالTo Him belongs the call of truth;
له دعوة ٱلحقand those they invoke besides Him respond to them in nothing, except like one who stretches out his palms toward water so that it may reach his mouth, never reaching it.
وٱلذين يدعون من دونه لا يستجيبون لهم بشىء إلا كبسط كفيه إلى ٱلمآء ليبلغ فاه وما هو ببلغهThe invocation of those who disown is nothing but in error.
وما دعآء ٱلكفرين إلا في ضللAnd before God prostrates whoever is in the heavens and on the earth, willingly or unwillingly, as do their shadows, morning and evening.
ولله يسجد من في ٱلسموت وٱلأرض طوعا وكرها وظللهم بٱلغدو وٱلءاصالSay: "Who is the Guardian of the heavens and the earth?" Say: "God."
قل من رب ٱلسموت وٱلأرض قل ٱللهSay: "Have you then taken, besides Him, allies who hold for themselves neither profit nor harm?"
قل أفٱتخذتم من دونه أوليآء لا يملكون لأنفسهم نفعا ولا ضراSay: "Are the blind and the seeing equal?"
قل هل يستوي ٱلأعمى وٱلبصيرOr are the darknesses and the light equal?
أم هل تستوي ٱلظلمت وٱلنورOr have they assigned to God associates who created as He creates, such that creation seems alike to them?
أم جعلوا لله شركآء خلقوا كخلقه فتشبه ٱلخلق عليهمSay: "God is the Creator of everything,
قل ٱلله خلق كل شىءand He is the One, the Subjugator."
وهو ٱلوحد ٱلقهرHe has sent down from the sky a water, and valleys began to flow according to their measure, and the torrent carried a swollen froth;
أنزل من ٱلسمآء مآء فسالت أودية بقدرها فٱحتمل ٱلسيل زبدا رابياand of what is heated in the fire, seeking an ornament or a use, there is likewise a froth.
ومما يوقدون عليه في ٱلنار ٱبتغآء حلية أو متع زبد مثلهThus does God multiply truth and falsehood:
كذلك يضرب ٱلله ٱلحق وٱلبطلthe froth goes off as scum,
فأما ٱلزبد فيذهب جفآءwhile what is useful to people remains on the earth.
وأما ما ينفع ٱلناس فيمكث في ٱلأرضThus God multiplies the examples.
كذلك يضرب ٱلله ٱلأمثالTo those who respond to their Guardian belongs the best;
للذين ٱستجابوا لربهم ٱلحسنىand those who do not respond to Him, if they possessed all that is on the earth, and its equivalent besides, they would give it as ransom.
وٱلذين لم يستجيبوا له لو أن لهم ما في ٱلأرض جميعا ومثله معه لٱفتدوا بهThose are the ones who will have the worst of reckonings,
أولئك لهم سوء ٱلحسابand their refuge will be Jahannam:
ومأوىهم جهنمwhat an evil bed!
وبئس ٱلمهادIs he who knows that what has been sent down to you from your Guardian is the truth then like one who is blind?
أفمن يعلم أنمآ أنزل إليك من ربك ٱلحق كمن هو أعمىOnly the possessors of intelligence remember, those who are faithful to God's pact and do not break the solemn engagement, those who join what God has commanded to be joined, dread their Guardian and fear the worst of reckonings, those who were patient seeking the direction of their Guardian, maintained the Contact, spent from what We provided them, secretly and openly, and repel evil with good.
إنما يتذكر أولوا ٱلألبب ٱلذين يوفون بعهد ٱلله ولا ينقضون ٱلميثق وٱلذين يصلون مآ أمر ٱلله به أن يوصل ويخشون ربهم ويخافون سوء ٱلحساب وٱلذين صبروا ٱبتغآء وجه ربهم وأقاموا ٱلصلوة وأنفقوا مما رزقنهم سرا وعلانية ويدرءون بٱلحسنة ٱلسيئةThose are the ones who will have the outcome of the Abode:
أولئك لهم عقبى ٱلدارthe Gardens of permanent abode, which they will enter, along with those who were righteous among their ancestors, their spouses, and their descendants,
جنت عدن يدخلونها ومن صلح من ءابآئهم وأزوجهم وذريتهمand the Agents will enter upon them through every gate:
وٱلملئكة يدخلون عليهم من كل باب"Peace be upon you, for what you were patient in!"
سلم عليكم بما صبرتمWhat an excellent outcome of the Abode!
فنعم عقبى ٱلدارAnd those who break God's pact after the solemn engagement that binds it, sever what God has commanded to be joined, and spread corruption on the earth — those are the ones to whom belongs the curse, and to whom belongs the worst of abodes.
وٱلذين ينقضون عهد ٱلله من بعد ميثقه ويقطعون مآ أمر ٱلله به أن يوصل ويفسدون في ٱلأرض أولئك لهم ٱللعنة ولهم سوء ٱلدارGod extends provision to whom He wills, and He measures it:
ٱلله يبسط ٱلرزق لمن يشآء ويقدرand they rejoice in the present life,
وفرحوا بٱلحيوة ٱلدنياwhile the present life, compared to the last life, is only a fleeting enjoyment.
وما ٱلحيوة ٱلدنيا في ٱلءاخرة إلا متعAnd those who disown say: "Why has a sign not been sent down upon him from his Guardian?"
ويقول ٱلذين كفروا لولآ أنزل عليه ءاية من ربهSay: "God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides to Himself whoever turns back to Him,
قل إن ٱلله يضل من يشآء ويهدي إليه من أنابthose who believe and whose cores find peace in the remembrance of God.
ٱلذين ءامنوا وتطمئن قلوبهم بذكر ٱللهIs it not in the remembrance of God that the cores find peace?"
ألا بذكر ٱلله تطمئن ٱلقلوبThose who have believed and done righteous deeds — what felicity for them, and what a fine place of return!
ٱلذين ءامنوا وعملوا ٱلصلحت طوبى لهم وحسن مابThus We have sent you within a community before which other communities have already passed, so that you may recite to them what We have revealed to you, while they disown the All-Benevolent.
كذلك أرسلنك في أمة قد خلت من قبلهآ أمم لتتلوا عليهم ٱلذي أوحينآ إليك وهم يكفرون بٱلرحمنSay: "He is my Guardian;
قل هو ربيthere is no deity but Him;
لآ إله إلا هوupon Him I rely, and to Him goes my repentance."
عليه توكلت وإليه متابAnd even if a Recitation caused the mountains to move by it, or split the earth by it, or made the dead speak by it [they would not believe].
ولو أن قرءانا سيرت به ٱلجبال أو قطعت به ٱلأرض أو كلم به ٱلموتىBut to God belongs the command, entirely:
بل لله ٱلأمر جميعاhave those who believe not yet understood that, if God willed, He would guide all the people?
أفلم يايس ٱلذين ءامنوا أن لو يشآء ٱلله لهدى ٱلناس جميعاAnd those who disown will not cease to be struck, for what they have fabricated, by a sudden calamity, or [that calamity] will alight near their abode, until God's promise comes:
ولا يزال ٱلذين كفروا تصيبهم بما صنعوا قارعة أو تحل قريبا من دارهم حتى يأتي وعد ٱللهGod indeed does not fail His promise.
إن ٱلله لا يخلف ٱلميعادAnd messengers before you were indeed mocked; I then granted a delay to those who disowned, then I seized them:
ولقد ٱستهزئ برسل من قبلك فأمليت للذين كفروا ثم أخذتهمand what then was My sanction?
فكيف كان عقابIs He who watches over every Self, according to what it has earned, [like another]?
أفمن هو قآئم على كل نفس بما كسبتAnd they have assigned associates to God: say: "Name them!
وجعلوا لله شركآء قل سموهمWill you inform Him of what He does not know on the earth, or is this only a saying in appearance?"
أم تنبونه بما لا يعلم في ٱلأرض أم بظهر من ٱلقولIt is nothing of the sort: their plot has been made to appear pleasing to those who disown, and they have been turned away from the way.
بل زين للذين كفروا مكرهم وصدوا عن ٱلسبيلAnd whoever God lets go astray has no guide left.
ومن يضلل ٱلله فما له من هادThere is for them a punishment in the present life,
لهم عذاب في ٱلحيوة ٱلدنياbut the punishment of the last life is even more grievous,
ولعذاب ٱلءاخرة أشقand they have, against God, no defender.
وما لهم من ٱلله من واقThe example of the Garden promised to those who guard themselves: rivers flow beneath it, its fare is constant, as is its shade —
مثل ٱلجنة ٱلتي وعد ٱلمتقون تجري من تحتها ٱلأنهر أكلها دآئم وظلهاsuch is the outcome of those who guarded themselves,
تلك عقبى ٱلذين ٱتقواwhile the outcome of those who disown is the Fire.
وعقبى ٱلكفرين ٱلنارAnd those to whom We gave the Scripture rejoice at what has been sent down to you,
وٱلذين ءاتينهم ٱلكتب يفرحون بمآ أنزل إليكbut there are, among the parties, those who disavow part of it.
ومن ٱلأحزاب من ينكر بعضهSay: "I have only been commanded to obey God, and to associate nothing with Him:
قل إنمآ أمرت أن أعبد ٱلله ولآ أشرك بهit is to Him that I call,
إليه أدعواand to Him is my return."
وإليه مابAnd thus We have sent it down, as a flawless judgment:
وكذلك أنزلنه حكما عربياand if you followed their emotions after knowledge has come to you, you would have, against God, neither protector nor defender.
ولئن ٱتبعت أهوآءهم بعدما جآءك من ٱلعلم ما لك من ٱلله من ولي ولا واقWe have indeed sent messengers before you, and given them spouses and descendants;
ولقد أرسلنا رسلا من قبلك وجعلنا لهم أزوجا وذريةand it was not for any messenger to bring a sign, except with God's permission.
وما كان لرسول أن يأتي باية إلا بإذن ٱللهTo every term belongs a register.
لكل أجل كتابGod effaces what He wills, and He affirms,
يمحوا ٱلله ما يشآء ويثبتand with Him is the Source of the Scripture.
وعنده أم ٱلكتبWhether We show you a part of what We promise them, or whether We keep you faithfully, only the transmission is incumbent upon you, and the reckoning belongs to Us.
وإن ما نرينك بعض ٱلذي نعدهم أو نتوفينك فإنما عليك ٱلبلغ وعلينا ٱلحسابHave they not seen that We come to the earth, reducing it from its extremities?
أولم يروا أنا نأتي ٱلأرض ننقصها من أطرافهاGod judges, and none can revise His judgment:
وٱلله يحكم لا معقب لحكمهHe is swift in reckoning.
وهو سريع ٱلحسابThose before them indeed plotted, but to God belongs the whole plot:
وقد مكر ٱلذين من قبلهم فلله ٱلمكر جميعاHe knows what every Self earns,
يعلم ما تكسب كل نفسand those who disown will soon know to whom belongs the outcome of the Abode.
وسيعلم ٱلكفر لمن عقبى ٱلدارAnd those who disown say: "You are not sent."
ويقول ٱلذين كفروا لست مرسلاSay: "God suffices as witness between me and you, and whoever holds the knowledge of the Scripture."
قل كفى بٱلله شهيدا بيني وبينكم ومن عنده علم ٱلكتب
