Al-Hijr
Until Certainty Comes
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Ra.
بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم الرThese are the signs of the Scripture, and of a clear Recitation.
تلك ءايت ٱلكتب وقرءان مبينIt may often be that those who disown wish they had been true to God alone.
ربما يود ٱلذين كفروا لو كانوا مسلمينLeave them to eat, enjoy themselves, and let hope distract them:
ذرهم يأكلوا ويتمتعوا ويلههم ٱلأملthey will soon know.
فسوف يعلمونWe have not annihilated any city without it having had, concerning it, a known register.
ومآ أهلكنا من قرية إلا ولها كتاب معلومNo community precedes its term, nor delays it.
ما تسبق من أمة أجلها وما يستخرونAnd they said: "O you upon whom the Reminder has been sent down, you are surely deranged! Why do you not bring us the Agents, if you are among the truthful?"
وقالوا يأيها ٱلذي نزل عليه ٱلذكر إنك لمجنون لو ما تأتينا بٱلملئكة إن كنت من ٱلصدقينWe do not send down the Agents except with truth,
ما ننزل ٱلملئكة إلا بٱلحقand then, they would be granted no reprieve.
وما كانوا إذا منظرينIt is indeed We who have sent down the Reminder,
إنا نحن نزلنا ٱلذكرand it is We who are surely its preservers.
وإنا له لحفظونWe have indeed sent, before you, [messengers] among the factions of the ancients,
ولقد أرسلنا من قبلك في شيع ٱلأولينand no messenger came to them without their mocking him.
وما يأتيهم من رسول إلا كانوا به يستهزءونThus We insinuate it into the cores of the severed: they do not believe in it, though the precedent of the ancients has already come to pass.
كذلك نسلكه في قلوب ٱلمجرمين لا يؤمنون به وقد خلت سنة ٱلأولينAnd even if We opened for them a gate of the sky, through which they kept ascending, they would say: "Our sight is only obnubilated; we are rather a people abused by illusion."
ولو فتحنا عليهم بابا من ٱلسمآء فظلوا فيه يعرجون لقالوا إنما سكرت أبصرنا بل نحن قوم مسحورونWe have indeed placed in the sky constellations, and adorned them for those who look, and preserved them from every banished Diverter — except one who steals a furtive hearing, and is then pursued by a clear, blazing projectile.
ولقد جعلنا في ٱلسمآء بروجا وزينها للنظرين وحفظنها من كل شيطن رجيم إلا من ٱسترق ٱلسمع فأتبعه شهاب مبينAnd the earth, We spread it out, and cast upon it firmly-anchored mountains, and caused to grow upon it everything weighed, and We gave you therein means of livelihood,
وٱلأرض مددنها وألقينا فيها روسي وأنبتنا فيها من كل شىء موزون وجعلنا لكم فيها معيشas well as to those for whom you are not providers.
ومن لستم له برزقينThere is nothing whose treasures We do not hold,
وإن من شىء إلا عندنا خزآئنهand We send it down only according to a known measure.
وما ننزله إلا بقدر معلومAnd We sent the fecundating winds, and then sent down from the sky a water with which We gave you drink, and which you do not hold in reserve.
وأرسلنا ٱلريح لوقح فأنزلنا من ٱلسمآء مآء فأسقينكموه ومآ أنتم له بخزنينAnd it is surely We who give life and give death, and it is We who are the heirs.
وإنا لنحن نحي ونميت ونحن ٱلورثونWe indeed know those among you who go first, and We indeed know those who lag behind.
ولقد علمنا ٱلمستقدمين منكم ولقد علمنا ٱلمستخرينAnd it is indeed your Guardian who will gather them:
وإن ربك هو يحشرهمHe is indeed Wise, All-Knowing.
إنه حكيم عليمWe have indeed created the human being from resonant clay, [drawn] from molded mud,
ولقد خلقنا ٱلإنسن من صلصل من حمإ مسنونand the Occulted, We had created them before, from a fire of scorching wind.
وٱلجآن خلقنه من قبل من نار ٱلسمومAnd [recall] when your Guardian said to the Agents: "I am going to create a human from resonant clay, [drawn] from molded mud; when I have formed him and breathed into him of My Influx, fall down before him in prostration."
وإذ قال ربك للملئكة إني خلق بشرا من صلصل من حمإ مسنون فإذا سويته ونفخت فيه من روحي فقعوا له سجدينThe Agents then prostrated, all together, except the Despairing One [Iblis]: he refused to be among those who prostrated.
فسجد ٱلملئكة كلهم أجمعون إلآ إبليس أبى أن يكون مع ٱلسجدينHe said: "O Despairing One [Iblis], what is with you, that you are not among those who prostrate?"
قال يإبليس ما لك ألا تكون مع ٱلسجدينHe said: "I am not [made] to prostrate before a human You created from resonant clay, [drawn] from molded mud."
قال لم أكن لأسجد لبشر خلقته من صلصل من حمإ مسنونHe said: "Get out of here, for you are now banished, and the curse will weigh upon you until the Day of Retribution."
قال فٱخرج منها فإنك رجيم وإن عليك ٱللعنة إلى يوم ٱلدينHe said: "My Guardian, grant me then a delay until the day they are raised."
قال رب فأنظرني إلى يوم يبعثونHe said: "You are indeed among those granted a delay, until the day of the known moment."
قال فإنك من ٱلمنظرين إلى يوم ٱلوقت ٱلمعلومHe said: "My Guardian, for having let me be misled, I shall surely make [evil] appear pleasing to them on earth, and I shall surely mislead them all, except Your obedient ones among them who are purified."
قال رب بمآ أغويتني لأزينن لهم في ٱلأرض ولأغوينهم أجمعين إلا عبادك منهم ٱلمخلصينHe said: "This is a path incumbent upon Me, a straight path.
قال هذا صرط على مستقيمOver My obedient ones, you have no authority, except over whoever follows you among the misled."
إن عبادي ليس لك عليهم سلطن إلا من ٱتبعك من ٱلغاوينAnd Jahannam is surely their meeting-place, all of them; it has seven gates,
وإن جهنم لموعدهم أجمعين لها سبعة أبوبto each gate belongs a determined portion of them.
لكل باب منهم جزء مقسومThose who guarded themselves will be in gardens and springs: "Enter therein in peace, in security."
إن ٱلمتقين في جنت وعيون ٱدخلوها بسلم ءامنينAnd We shall have removed from their chests all rancor,
ونزعنا ما في صدورهم من غل[they will be] brothers, upon couches, facing one another.
إخونا على سرر متقبلينNo fatigue will touch them therein,
لا يمسهم فيها نصبand they will never be expelled from it.
وما هم منها بمخرجينInform My obedient ones that it is I, the Most-Forgiving, the Benevolent, and that My punishment is the painful punishment.
نبئ عبادي أني أنا ٱلغفور ٱلرحيم وأن عذابي هو ٱلعذاب ٱلأليمAnd inform them about the guests of Ibrahim, when they entered upon him and said: "Peace!"
ونبئهم عن ضيف إبرهيم إذ دخلوا عليه فقالوا سلماHe said: "We are trembling because of you."
قال إنا منكم وجلونThey said: "Do not tremble: we bring you glad tidings of a knowledgeable boy."
قالوا لا توجل إنا نبشرك بغلم عليمHe said: "Do you give me this glad tiding, when old age has touched me? Of what then do you give me tidings?"
قال أبشرتموني على أن مسني ٱلكبر فبم تبشرونThey said: "We bring you this glad tiding in truth: so do not be among those who lose heart."
قالوا بشرنك بٱلحق فلا تكن من ٱلقنطينHe said: "And who loses heart regarding his Guardian's benevolence, except the astray?"
قال ومن يقنط من رحمة ربه إلا ٱلضآلونHe said: "What then is your case, O envoys?"
قال فما خطبكم أيها ٱلمرسلونThey said: "We are sent to a severed people, except the family of Lut.
قالوا إنآ أرسلنآ إلى قوم مجرمين إلآ ءال لوطWe shall surely save them all, except his wife: We have determined that she is indeed among those who remain behind."
إنا لمنجوهم أجمعين إلا ٱمرأته قدرنآ إنها لمن ٱلغبرينAnd when the envoys came to the family of Lut, he said: "You are people I do not recognize."
فلما جآء ءال لوط ٱلمرسلون قال إنكم قوم منكرونThey said: "We bring you rather that about which they were in doubt. We have come to you with the truth, and we are surely truthful.
قالوا بل جئنك بما كانوا فيه يمترون وأتينك بٱلحق وإنا لصدقونSo depart with your family, at a time of the night, and follow behind them, and let none of you turn around, and go where you are commanded."
فأسر بأهلك بقطع من ٱليل وٱتبع أدبرهم ولا يلتفت منكم أحد وٱمضوا حيث تؤمرونAnd We conveyed to him this command: the last remnant of those people would be cut off, by morning.
وقضينآ إليه ذلك ٱلأمر أن دابر هؤلآء مقطوع مصبحينAnd the people of the Capital came, exulting.
وجآء أهل ٱلمدينة يستبشرونHe said: "These are my guests: do not dishonor me,
قال إن هؤلآء ضيفي فلا تفضحونand guard yourselves toward God, and do not disgrace me."
وٱتقوا ٱلله ولا تخزونThey said: "Did we not forbid you [to receive] anyone from among all beings?"
قالوا أولم ننهك عن ٱلعلمينHe said: "Here are my daughters, if you must act."
قال هؤلآء بناتي إن كنتم فعلينBy your life, they were surely wandering blindly in their intoxication.
لعمرك إنهم لفي سكرتهم يعمهونThe Cry then seized them at daybreak, and We made the top [of their city] its bottom, and rained upon them stones of hardened clay.
فأخذتهم ٱلصيحة مشرقين فجعلنا عليها سافلها وأمطرنا عليهم حجارة من سجيلThere are surely in that signs for those who can read the marks.
إن في ذلك لءايت للمتوسمينAnd it is indeed upon a way that endures.
وإنها لبسبيل مقيمThere is surely in that a sign for the believers.
إن في ذلك لءاية للمؤمنينAnd the companions of the Thicket were indeed wrongdoers,
وإن كان أصحب ٱلأيكة لظلمينso We took vengeance upon them,
فٱنتقمنا منهمand these two [cities] are indeed upon a manifest reference.
وإنهما لبإمام مبينThe companions of al-Hijr indeed denied the envoys,
ولقد كذب أصحب ٱلحجر ٱلمرسلينAnd We gave them Our signs, but they turned away from them.
وءاتينهم ءايتنا فكانوا عنها معرضينAnd they carved, in the mountains, houses, in complete security.
وكانوا ينحتون من ٱلجبال بيوتا ءامنينThe Cry then seized them in the morning,
فأخذتهم ٱلصيحة مصبحينand what they had earned availed them nothing.
فمآ أغنى عنهم ما كانوا يكسبونWe created the heavens, the earth, and what is between them, only with truth.
وما خلقنا ٱلسموت وٱلأرض وما بينهمآ إلا بٱلحقAnd the Hour is surely coming:
وإن ٱلساعة لءاتيةso overlook, with a fine overlooking.
فٱصفح ٱلصفح ٱلجميلYour Guardian is indeed the Great Creator, the All-Knowing.
إن ربك هو ٱلخلق ٱلعليمWe have indeed given you seven of the couplets, and the immense Recitation.
ولقد ءاتينك سبعا من ٱلمثاني وٱلقرءان ٱلعظيمDo not extend your eyes toward what We have granted some pairs among them to enjoy,
لا تمدن عينيك إلى ما متعنا به أزوجا منهمand do not grieve over them,
ولا تحزن عليهمand lower your wing for the believers.
وٱخفض جناحك للمؤمنينAnd say: "I am, indeed, the clear warner" — as We sent it down upon those who divided it, those who made of this Recitation disparate fragments.
وقل إني أنا ٱلنذير ٱلمبين كمآ أنزلنا على ٱلمقتسمين ٱلذين جعلوا ٱلقرءان عضينBy your Guardian, We shall surely question them all about what they used to do.
فوربك لنسلنهم أجمعين عما كانوا يعملونSo proclaim openly what you are commanded,
فٱصدع بما تؤمرand turn away from those who associate.
وأعرض عن ٱلمشركينWe have indeed sufficed you against the mockers, those who place, alongside God, another deity:
إنا كفينك ٱلمستهزءين ٱلذين يجعلون مع ٱلله إلها ءاخرthey will soon know.
فسوف يعلمونWe indeed know that your chest tightens from what they say:
ولقد نعلم أنك يضيق صدرك بما يقولونso glorify, with praise, your Guardian, and be among those who prostrate,
فسبح بحمد ربك وكن من ٱلسجدينand obey your Guardian until certainty comes to you.
وٱعبد ربك حتى يأتيك ٱليقين
