Al-Isra
To What Is Most Upright
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Exalted is He who made His obedient one travel by night, from the inviolable place of prostration to the farthest place of prostration, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him some of Our signs.
Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
And We gave Moussa the Scripture, and made it a guidance for the Sons of Israel: "Take no one, besides Me, as a trustee" — descendants of those We carried with Nuh.
He was indeed a grateful obedient one.
And We decreed to the Sons of Israel, in the Scripture: "You will surely spread corruption on the earth twice, and you will surely rise to an immense arrogance."
When the promise of the first of these two came, We raised up against you obedient ones of Ours, possessed of severe rigor, who ranged through the abodes in every direction —
فإذا جآء وعد أولىهما بعثنا عليكم عبادا لنآ أولي بأس شديد فجاسوا خلل ٱلديارand it was a fulfilled promise.
Then We gave you back the upper hand over them, and supported you with goods and children, and made you more numerous in ranks.
If you do well, you do well for yourselves,
إن أحسنتم أحسنتم لأنفسكمand if you do ill, it is against yourselves.
Then, when the promise of the second time came, [We raised up obedient ones] to afflict your faces, to enter the place of prostration as they had entered it the first time, and to utterly destroy whatever they seized.
فإذا جآء وعد ٱلءاخرة ليسوا وجوهكم وليدخلوا ٱلمسجد كما دخلوه أول مرة وليتبروا ما علوا تتبيراIt may be that your Guardian will show you benevolence;
عسى ربكم أن يرحمكمbut if you revert, We will revert.
And We have made Jahannam, for those who disown, an enclosure.
This Recitation guides to what is most upright, and gives the believers who do righteous deeds the glad tidings that they will have a great reward, and that those who do not believe in the last life — We have prepared for them a painful punishment.
The human being calls for evil with the same haste with which he calls for good,
ويدع ٱلإنسن بٱلشر دعآءه بٱلخيرfor the human being is hasty.
We have made the night and the day two signs; We effaced the sign of the night and made the sign of the day a time of clarity, so that you might seek a favor from your Guardian and know the count of years and reckoning.
And everything, We have set out in detail.
And to every human being We have fastened his own omen to his neck; and We shall bring forth for him, on the Day of Appearance, a register which he will find deployed:
Read your register: today, it suffices that you be your own accountant."
Whoever lets himself be guided is guided only for himself,
من ٱهتدى فإنما يهتدي لنفسهand whoever goes astray does so only against himself.
No bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another.
And We never punish until We have raised up a messenger.
And when We wish to annihilate a city, We command its affluent ones [to reform], but they overstep within it; so the saying proves true against it, and We destroy it utterly.
How many generations have We annihilated after Nuh!
Your Guardian suffices, to know the offenses of His obedient ones, as Informed and the All-Seeing.
Whoever wants the immediate life, We hasten for him in it what We will, to whom We will; then We assign him Jahannam, where he will burn, blamed, driven away.
And whoever wants the last [life] and strives for it with the effort it deserves, while being a believer — those are the ones whose effort will be acknowledged.
To all, We grant —
كلا نمدto these as to those — from your Guardian's gift,
هؤلآء وهؤلآء من عطآء ربكand your Guardian's gift is never restricted.
وما كان عطآء ربك محظوراSee how We have favored some over others;
ٱنظر كيف فضلنا بعضهم على بعضand the last life is indeed greater in degrees, and greater in preference.
Do not place, alongside God, another deity, or you would find yourself blamed, abandoned.
Your Guardian has decreed that you obey none but Him,
وقضى ربك ألا تعبدوا إلآ إياهand beneficence toward one's two parents.
If either of them, or both, reach old age with you, do not say to them "ugh!" and do not rebuke them,
إما يبلغن عندك ٱلكبر أحدهمآ أو كلاهما فلا تقل لهمآ أف ولا تنهرهماbut speak to them a noble saying.
And lower for them the wing of docility, out of tenderness,
وٱخفض لهما جناح ٱلذل من ٱلرحمةand say: "My Guardian, have benevolence on them as they brought me up when I was small."
Your Guardian knows best what is in your Self.
If you are righteous, He is, toward those who ever turn back to Him, Most-Forgiving.
And give to the close relative his due, and to the destitute and the traveler on the road,
وءات ذا ٱلقربى حقه وٱلمسكين وٱبن ٱلسبيلand do not squander wastefully.
Those who squander are the brothers of the Diverters,
إن ٱلمبذرين كانوا إخون ٱلشيطينand the Diverter is, toward his Guardian, a great disowner.
And if you must turn away from them, seeking a benevolence from your Guardian that you hope for, then speak to them an easy saying.
Do not keep your hand chained to your neck, nor stretch it out completely, or you would find yourself blamed, overwhelmed with desolation.
ولا تجعل يدك مغلولة إلى عنقك ولا تبسطها كل ٱلبسط فتقعد ملوما محسوراYour Guardian extends provision to whom He wills, and He measures it;
He is indeed, toward His obedient ones, Informed and the All-Seeing.
Do not kill your children for dread of poverty:
ولا تقتلوا أولدكم خشية إملقit is We who provide for them, as for you.
Killing them is indeed a great fault.
Do not approach fornication: it is an indecency, and what a detestable way!
And do not kill the Self that God has made inviolable, except by right.
Whoever is killed unjustly, We have granted the legal authority [in charge] an authority; but let him not exceed the bound in taking life,
ومن قتل مظلوما فقد جعلنا لوليه سلطنا فلا يسرف في ٱلقتلfor he will indeed be helped.
Do not approach the orphan's goods, except in the best manner, until he reaches his full maturity,
ولا تقربوا مال ٱليتيم إلا بٱلتي هي أحسن حتى يبلغ أشدهand be faithful to the pact,
وأوفوا بٱلعهدfor the pact will be questioned.
Give the measure faithfully when you measure, and weigh with the straight scale:
وأوفوا ٱلكيل إذا كلتم وزنوا بٱلقسطاس ٱلمستقيمthat is better, and of finer interpretation.
Do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge:
ولا تقف ما ليس لك به علمhearing, sight, and the Conscience — of all that, account will be asked.
And do not walk upon the earth strutting:
ولا تمش في ٱلأرض مرحاyou will indeed never split the earth, nor reach the mountains in height.
All that, its evil is, with your Guardian, detestable.
That is what your Guardian has revealed to you of wisdom.
Do not place, alongside God, another deity, or you would be cast into Jahannam, blamed, driven away.
Has your Guardian then favored you with sons, and taken, among the Agents, daughters?
You are surely uttering an immense saying.
We have indeed diversified, in this Recitation, [Our words] so that they might remember; but it only increases their aversion.
Say: "If there were, with Him, deities, as they say, they would then have sought a way to the Holder of the Edifice."
Glory be to Him, and He is exalted, above what they say, in immense exaltation.
سبحنه وتعلى عما يقولون علوا كبيراThe seven heavens glorify Him, as does the earth and those within it;
تسبح له ٱلسموت ٱلسبع وٱلأرض ومن فيهنthere is nothing that does not glorify Him in praise,
وإن من شىء إلا يسبح بحمدهbut you do not understand their glorification.
He is indeed Forbearing, Most-Forgiving.
And when you recite the Recitation, We place between you and those who do not believe in the last life a hidden veil,
وإذا قرأت ٱلقرءان جعلنا بينك وبين ٱلذين لا يؤمنون بٱلءاخرة حجابا مستوراand We place over their cores coverings, [preventing them] from understanding it, and in their ears a deafness.
And when you mention your Guardian in the Recitation, Him alone, they turn their backs in aversion.
We know best what they listen for, when they listen to you, and when they are in secret talk, when the wrongdoers say: "You follow none but a man abused by illusion."
See how they have multiplied examples against you, and so gone astray:
ٱنظر كيف ضربوا لك ٱلأمثال فضلواso they cannot find a way.
And they said: "When we are bones and fragments, shall we really be raised in a new creation?"
Say: "Be stone, or iron, or any creation that looms great in your chests,
They will then say: 'Who will bring us back?'
Say: 'He who originated you the first time.'
Then they will shake their heads at you and say: 'When will that be?'
Say: 'It may well be near.
The Day He calls you, you will respond in praise of Him, and you will think you had stayed only a little [while]."
And tell My obedient ones to say what is best:
وقل لعبادي يقولوا ٱلتي هي أحسنthe Diverter sows discord among them;
إن ٱلشيطن ينزغ بينهمthe Diverter is, to the human being, a manifest enemy.
Your Guardian knows you best; if He wills, He shows you benevolence, and if He wills, He punishes you.
We have not sent you to be their trustee.
Your Guardian knows best those who are in the heavens and the earth.
We have indeed favored some prophets over others, and We gave Dawud the Formulary.
Say: "Invoke those you claim [to be divine] besides Him: they have no power to remove harm from you, nor to divert it."
Those very ones they invoke seek, toward their Guardian, the means of approach — whichever of them is nearest — and hope for His benevolence and fear His punishment,
أولئك ٱلذين يدعون يبتغون إلى ربهم ٱلوسيلة أيهم أقرب ويرجون رحمته ويخافون عذابهfor your Guardian's punishment is indeed to be feared.
There is not a city but We shall annihilate it before the Day of Appearance, or punish it with a severe punishment:
وإن من قرية إلا نحن مهلكوها قبل يوم ٱلقيمة أو معذبوها عذابا شديداthat is inscribed in the register.
Nothing has kept Us from sending the signs, except that the former peoples denied them.
We gave the Depleters [Thamud] the she-camel, as clear evidence, but they wronged her.
And We send the signs only as a warning.
And [recall] when We told you that your Guardian encompasses the people [in His knowledge] —
We made the vision that We showed you only a trial for the people, as also the cursed tree in this Recitation.
And We warn them, but it only increases their immense excess.
And [recall] when We said to the Agents: "Prostrate before Adam," they prostrated,
وإذ قلنا للملئكة ٱسجدوا لءادم فسجدواexcept the Despairing One [Iblis]: he said: "Shall I prostrate before one You created from clay?"
He said: "Do You see this one You have honored above me? If You give me respite until the Day of Appearance, I shall surely seize his descendants, except a few."
He said: "Go! Whoever among them follows you — Jahannam will be your recompense, an abundant recompense.
Rouse, by your voice, whomever you can among them; muster against them your cavalry and your infantry; share with them in goods and children; and make them promises —
وٱستفزز من ٱستطعت منهم بصوتك وأجلب عليهم بخيلك ورجلك وشاركهم في ٱلأمول وٱلأولد وعدهمbut the Diverter promises them only deception.
وما يعدهم ٱلشيطن إلا غروراOver My obedient ones, you have no authority;
إن عبادي ليس لك عليهم سلطنand your Guardian suffices as trustee."
Your Guardian is the One who makes the vessel glide for you on the sea, so that you may seek His favor.
He is indeed, toward you, Benevolent.
And when harm touches you at sea, those you invoke abandon you, except Him.
Then, when He saves you to dry land, you turn away:
فلما نجىكم إلى ٱلبر أعرضتمthe human being is a great disowner.
Are you then sure He will not cause a part of the dry land to swallow you, or send upon you a storm of stones, leaving you then to find no trustee? Or are you sure He will not bring you back into it another time, to send upon you a shattering wind that drowns you, for your disowning, leaving you then to find no one to pursue Us on your behalf?
We have indeed honored the sons of Adam, carried them on land and sea, provided them with good things, and preferred them, in preference, over many of those We have created.
The Day We call every group of people with their reference,
يوم ندعوا كل أناس بإممهمwhoever is given his register in his right hand — those will read their register, and not be wronged a hair's breadth.
And whoever is blind in this [life] will be blind in the last life, and further astray as to the way.
ومن كان في هذه أعمى فهو في ٱلءاخرة أعمى وأضل سبيلاThey have indeed nearly tried you, [to turn you away] from what We revealed to you, so that you might invent against Us something else;
وإن كادوا ليفتنونك عن ٱلذي أوحينآ إليك لتفتري علينا غيرهand then, they would have taken you as an intimate friend.
And had We not made you firm, you would well nigh have inclined toward them, a little.
We would then have made you taste double [the punishment] of life and double [the punishment] of death; then you would have found, against Us, no helper.
They have indeed nearly shaken you out of this land, to drive you out of it —
وإن كادوا ليستفزونك من ٱلأرض ليخرجوك منهاand then, they would not have remained after you, except a little.
Such is the norm concerning those We sent before you among Our messengers,
سنة من قد أرسلنا قبلك من رسلناand you will find no change to Our norm.
Maintain the Contact from the sun's decline until the darkness of night, and the Recitation of dawn:
أقم ٱلصلوة لدلوك ٱلشمس إلى غسق ٱليل وقرءان ٱلفجرthe Recitation of dawn is indeed witnessed.
And for part of the night, keep vigil with it, as an addition for you: it may be that your Guardian will raise you to a praised station.
And say: "My Guardian, cause me to enter by an entrance of truth, and cause me to exit by an exit of truth, and grant me, from Yourself, a supporting authority."
And say: "The truth has come, and falsehood has vanished:
وقل جآء ٱلحق وزهق ٱلبطلfalsehood is bound to vanish."
And We send down, from this Recitation, that which is healing and benevolence for the believers,
وننزل من ٱلقرءان ما هو شفآء ورحمة للمؤمنينbut it only increases the wrongdoers in loss.
ولا يزيد ٱلظلمين إلا خساراAnd when We favor the human being with blessings, he turns away and withdraws to his side;
وإذآ أنعمنا على ٱلإنسن أعرض ونا بجانبهand when harm touches him, he is hopeless.
Say: "Each one acts according to his own manner; your Guardian knows best who is best guided as to the way."
And they ask you about the Influx.
Say: "The Influx is of my Guardian's affair; and you have been given of knowledge only a little."
And if We willed, We would surely take away what We have revealed to you; then you would find, against Us, no trustee for it — except a benevolence from your Guardian.
His favor toward you is indeed immense.
Say: "If humans and the Occulted united to produce the equal of this Recitation, they would not produce its equal, even were they mutual support to one another."
We have indeed diversified for the people, in this Recitation, every kind of example; but most people persisted in nothing but disowning.
And they said: "We will not give you credit until you make a spring gush forth for us from the earth, or you have a garden of palm trees and vines in which you make rivers gush forth abundantly, or you make the sky fall upon us in pieces as you claim, or you bring God and the Agents before us, or you have a house of ornament, or you ascend to the sky — and we will not give credit even to your ascent until you bring down upon us a register we can read."
Say: "Exalted is my Guardian! Am I anything but a human, a messenger?"
And nothing kept the people from believing, when guidance came to them, except that they said: "Would God have raised up a human as a messenger?"
Say: "Had there been on earth Agents walking about in tranquility, We would have sent down to them, from the sky, an Agent, as messenger."
Say: "God suffices as witness between me and you:
He is indeed, toward His obedient ones, Informed and the All-Seeing."
Whoever God guides, he is the one who lets himself be guided,
ومن يهد ٱلله فهو ٱلمهتدand whoever He lets go astray, you will never find for them allies besides Him.
And We shall gather them, on the Day of Appearance, upon their faces, blind, dumb, and deaf:
ونحشرهم يوم ٱلقيمة على وجوههم عميا وبكما وصماtheir refuge will be Jahannam:
مأوىهم جهنمevery time it dies down, We revive for them the inferno.
That is their recompense, for having disowned Our signs and said: "When we are bones and fragments, shall we really be raised in a new creation?"
Have they not seen that God, who created the heavens and the earth, is able to create their like, and that He has appointed for them a term about which there is no doubt?
But the wrongdoers persisted in nothing but disowning.
Say: "If you possessed the treasures of my Guardian's benevolence, you would then hold them back, for dread of spending."
The human being is stingy.
We have indeed given Moussa nine clear signs:
ولقد ءاتينا موسى تسع ءايت بينتso ask the Sons of Israel: when he came to them, Fir'awn said to him: "I think you are indeed abused by illusion, O Moussa."
He said: "You well know that none but the Guardian of the heavens and the earth has sent down these enlightening proofs,
قال لقد علمت مآ أنزل هؤلآء إلا رب ٱلسموت وٱلأرض بصآئرand I think you are indeed ruined, O Fir'awn."
He then wanted to shake them out of that land; but We drowned him, and all those with him.
And We said after him to the Sons of Israel: "Dwell in this land,"
وقلنا من بعده لبني إسرءيل ٱسكنوا ٱلأرضthen, when the promise of the second time comes, We shall bring you all together, mingled.
With truth We sent it down,
وبٱلحق أنزلنهand with truth it descended;
وبٱلحق نزلand We have sent you only as a bearer of good tidings and a warner.
And a Recitation that We have divided, so that you recite it to the people gradually,
وقرءانا فرقنه لتقرأه على ٱلناس على مكثand We have sent it down by successive stages.
Say: "Believe in it, or do not believe:
قل ءامنوا به أو لا تؤمنواthose to whom knowledge was given before it, when it is recited to them, fall prostrate on their chins, saying: 'Glory to our Guardian! Our Guardian's promise is surely fulfilled.'
And they fall on their chins, weeping, and it increases their humility.
Say: "Invoke God, or invoke the All-Benevolent:
قل ٱدعوا ٱلله أو ٱدعوا ٱلرحمنwhichever [name] you invoke, to Him belong the most beautiful attributes."
Do not speak too loudly in your Contact, nor whisper it either: seek, between the two, a way.
And say: "Praise be to God, who has not taken a child, who has no associate in sovereignty, and who has no protector against humiliation,"
