Al-Kahf
Unless God Wills
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Praise be to God, who has sent down upon His obedient one the Scripture and placed in it no deviation,
بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم ٱلحمد لله ٱلذي أنزل على عبده ٱلكتب ولم يجعل له عوجاstraight — to warn of a severe rigor from Him, to give the believers who do righteous deeds the glad tidings that they will have a fine reward, wherein they will remain forever, and to warn those who said: "God has taken a child."
They have no knowledge of it, nor did their ancestors.
How grave is the word that comes out of their mouths!
They say nothing but falsehood.
Perhaps you will consume yourself with bitterness, following after them, if they do not believe in this discourse.
We have made what is on the earth an adornment for it, so as to test them: which of them acts best.
And We shall surely make what is on it a barren, stripped ground.
Did you suppose that the companions of the Cave and of ar-Raqim were, among Our signs, a marvel?
When the young people took refuge in the Cave and said: "Our Guardian, grant us, from Yourself, a benevolence, and prepare for us, in our affair, a path of rectitude."
We then set up [a barrier] over their ears, in the Cave, for a counted number of years; then We revived them to know which of the two parties better reckoned the span of their stay.
We relate to you their information in truth:
نحن نقص عليك نبأهم بٱلحقthey were indeed young people who believed in their Guardian, and We increased them in guidance.
We bound their cores [firm], when they stood up and said: "Our Guardian is the Guardian of the heavens and the earth; never shall we call upon any deity besides Him — we would then have uttered an enormous excess."
Here is our people, who have taken deities besides Him: why do they not produce, concerning them, a clear authority?
Who then is more unjust than one who invents a lie against God?
And since you have separated yourselves from them and from what they obey besides God, take refuge in the Cave: your Guardian will spread over you some of His benevolence and prepare for you, in your affair, a support.
You would have seen the sun, at its rising, pay only a brief visit to their cave on the right, and at its setting, leave it with a graze on the left, while they lay in a recess set apart from it.
That is among the signs of God.
Whoever God guides, he lets himself be guided,
من يهد ٱلله فهو ٱلمهتدand whoever He lets go astray, you will never find for him an ally to set him back on the path.
You would have thought them awake, while they were asleep.
We turned them to the right and to the left, while their dog lay, paws stretched out, in a guarding stance [on watch].
Had you seen them, you would surely have turned away from them in flight, and been filled with terror at them.
Thus We revived them, so that they might question one another.
One of them said: "How long have you stayed?"
They said: "We have stayed a day, or part of a day."
They said: "Your Guardian knows best how long you have stayed; so send one of you, with these silver coins of yours, to the Capital, and let him see which of its foods is purest, and let him bring you provision from it, and let him act with discretion,
قالوا ربكم أعلم بما لبثتم فٱبعثوا أحدكم بورقكم هذه إلى ٱلمدينة فلينظر أيهآ أزكى طعاما فليأتكم برزق منه وليتلطفand let him make no one sense your presence in any way.
ولا يشعرن بكم أحداfor if they discovered you, they would banish you, or bring you back into their doctrine, and you would then never succeed."
Thus We caused their presence to be discovered, so that they might know that God's promise is true and that the Hour is not in doubt,
وكذلك أعثرنا عليهم ليعلموا أن وعد ٱلله حق وأن ٱلساعة لا ريب فيهآwhen they disagreed among themselves about them and said: "Build over them a structure" —
إذ يتنزعون بينهم أمرهم فقالوا ٱبنوا عليهم بنيناtheir Guardian knows them best.
Those who prevailed in the matter said: "We shall surely set up over them a place of prostration."
They will say: "Three, their dog the fourth,"
سيقولون ثلثة رابعهم كلبهمand they will say: "Five, their dog the sixth," guessing at what escapes the senses,
ويقولون خمسة سادسهم كلبهم رجما بٱلغيبand they will say: "Seven,"
ويقولون سبعةtheir dog being the eighth.
وثامنهم كلبهمSay: "My Guardian knows best their number";
قل ربي أعلم بعدتهمnone knows them, except a few.
So do not wrangle about them except in an apparent wrangling, and do not consult anyone among them about them.
And never say, of a thing: "I will do that tomorrow," without [adding]: "unless God wills."
And remember your Guardian when you forget,
وٱذكر ربك إذا نسيتand say: "It may be that my Guardian will guide me to a rectitude nearer than this."
They remained in their cave three hundred years, and added nine.
Say: "God knows best how long they remained:
قل ٱلله أعلم بما لبثواto Him belongs what escapes the senses in the heavens and on the earth.
How well He sees and hears!
They have, besides Him, no protector,
ما لهم من دونه من وليand He associates no one with His judgment."
Recite what has been revealed to you of the Scripture of your Guardian: none can alter His words,
وٱتل مآ أوحي إليك من كتاب ربك لا مبدل لكلمتهand you will find, besides Him, no refuge.
Hold yourself, with constancy, alongside those who call upon their Guardian morning and evening, seeking His direction,
وٱصبر نفسك مع ٱلذين يدعون ربهم بٱلغدوة وٱلعشي يريدون وجههand do not let your eyes turn away from them, seeking the adornment of the present life;
ولا تعد عيناك عنهم تريد زينة ٱلحيوة ٱلدنياand do not obey one whose core We have made heedless of Our remembrance, who has followed his emotion, and whose affair has [become] excess.
And say: "The truth is from your Guardian: so let whoever wishes believe, and whoever wishes disown."
We have prepared for the wrongdoers a fire whose enclosure surrounds them.
And if they cry for help, they will be helped with a water like molten metal, which scalds the faces.
What a detestable drink!
And what a detestable resting-place!
Those who have believed and done righteous deeds — We surely do not let go to waste the reward of one who does well.
Those are the ones who will have the Gardens of permanent abode, beneath which rivers flow; they will be ornamented there with bracelets of gold and clothed in green clothes of fine silk and brocade, reclining on couches.
What an excellent requital!
And what an excellent resting-place!
Multiply for them an example: two men; to one of them We gave two gardens of vines, which We surrounded with palm trees, and between which We placed cultivated fields.
Each of the two gardens gave its fare without failing in anything,
كلتا ٱلجنتين ءاتت أكلها ولم تظلم منه شياand We made a river burst forth between them; and he had fructified wealth.
He said to his companion, while conversing with him: "I am richer than you in goods, and stronger in numbers."
He entered his garden, wronging himself,
ودخل جنته وهو ظالم لنفسهand said: "I do not think this will ever perish, and I do not think the Hour will come; and even if I am brought back to my Guardian, I shall surely find something better than this garden as a return."
His companion said to him, while conversing with him: "Do you disown Him who created you from earth, then from a drop, then fashioned you into a well-formed man?
As for me, He is God, my Guardian, and I associate no one with my Guardian.
Why did you not say, upon entering your garden: 'What God wills! No strength except in God!' —
If you see me as having less goods and children than you, it may be that my Guardian will grant me better than your garden, and send upon it, from the sky, a reckoned punishment, so that it becomes a slippery ground, or its water sinks away, so that you will never be able to seek it out.
And his fructified wealth was surrounded [by ruin], so that he began wringing his hands over what he had spent on it, while it [the garden] was empty despite its edifices, and he was saying: "Would that I had associated no one with my Guardian!"
He had no group to help him besides God,
ولم تكن له فئة ينصرونه من دون ٱللهand he could not help himself.
In this, the [protective] sovereignty belongs to God, the True.
He is best in requital and best in outcome.
Multiply for them the example of the present life: it is like water that We send down from the sky; the vegetation of the earth mingles with it, then it becomes chaff scattered by the winds —
God is capable of all things.
وكان ٱلله على كل شىء مقتدراGoods and children are the adornment of the present life;
ٱلمال وٱلبنون زينة ٱلحيوة ٱلدنياand the enduring, righteous deeds are, with your Guardian, better in requital and better in hope.
The Day We set the mountains in motion, and you see the earth laid bare, and We gather them, leaving out not one of them.
They will be presented before your Guardian in rows:
وعرضوا على ربك صفا"Here you have come to Us as We created you the first time;
لقد جئتمونا كما خلقنكم أول مرةbut you claimed that We would never appoint you a meeting."
The register will be set down, and you will see the severed apprehensive of what is in it,
ووضع ٱلكتب فترى ٱلمجرمين مشفقين مما فيهand they will say: "Woe to us! What is it with this register that it leaves out nothing, small or great, without counting it!"
They will find before them what they have done,
ووجدوا ما عملوا حاضراand your Guardian wrongs no one.
And [recall] when We said to the Agents: "Prostrate before Adam," they prostrated,
وإذ قلنا للملئكة ٱسجدوا لءادم فسجدواexcept the Despairing One [Iblis]: he was among the Occulted, and he overstepped the command of his Guardian.
Would you then take him and his descendants as allies besides Me, while they are enemies to you?
What a detestable exchange for the wrongdoers!
I did not make them witnesses to the creation of the heavens and the earth, nor to their own creation, and I would never take those who mislead as a support.
And the Day He says: "Call upon My associates whom you claimed [to have]," they will call upon them, but they will not respond to them; and We shall place between them a place of perdition.
The severed will see the Fire and know that they are about to fall into it, finding no way to turn away from it.
ورءا ٱلمجرمون ٱلنار فظنوا أنهم مواقعوها ولم يجدوا عنها مصرفاWe have indeed diversified, in this Recitation, every kind of example for the people;
ولقد صرفنا في هذا ٱلقرءان للناس من كل مثلbut the human being is, more than anything, given to argument.
And nothing prevents the people from believing, when guidance has come to them, and from asking forgiveness of their Guardian, except that they wait for the precedent of the former peoples to come to them, or for the punishment to come to them, face to face.
وما منع ٱلناس أن يؤمنوا إذ جآءهم ٱلهدى ويستغفروا ربهم إلآ أن تأتيهم سنة ٱلأولين أو يأتيهم ٱلعذاب قبلاWe send the envoys only as bearers of good tidings and warners;
وما نرسل ٱلمرسلين إلا مبشرين ومنذرينand those who disown argue by falsehood, to shake the truth by it,
ويجدل ٱلذين كفروا بٱلبطل ليدحضوا به ٱلحقand they have taken My signs, and what they were warned of, in mockery.
And who is more unjust than one who, reminded of the signs of his Guardian, turns away from them, forgetting what his hands have prepared?
ومن أظلم ممن ذكر بايت ربه فأعرض عنها ونسي ما قدمت يداهWe have placed over their cores coverings, [preventing them] from understanding it, and in their ears a deafness;
إنا جعلنا على قلوبهم أكنة أن يفقهوه وفي ءاذانهم وقراand if you call them to guidance, they will never let themselves be guided.
وإن تدعهم إلى ٱلهدى فلن يهتدوا إذا أبداYour Guardian is the Most-Forgiving, the Possessor of benevolence;
وربك ٱلغفور ذو ٱلرحمةwere He to seize them for what they have earned, He would have hastened the punishment for them;
لو يؤاخذهم بما كسبوا لعجل لهم ٱلعذابbut they have an appointment from which they will find, besides Him, no refuge.
And those cities, We annihilated them when they did wrong, and We set an appointment for their annihilation.
And [recall] when Moussa said to his young companion: "I will not stop until I reach the meeting-place of the two seas, though I journey long."
When they had reached the meeting-place of the two seas, they forgot their fish, which then took its way into the sea, like a mirage vanishing.
When they had passed beyond [the place], he said to his young companion: "Bring us our meal; we have indeed met, on this journey, much fatigue."
He said: "Did you see? When we took refuge near the rock, I forgot the fish —
قال أرءيت إذ أوينآ إلى ٱلصخرة فإني نسيت ٱلحوتand only the Diverter made me forget it, so that I did not think to mention it —
ومآ أنسىنيه إلا ٱلشيطن أن أذكرهand it took its way into the sea,
وٱتخذ سبيله في ٱلبحرin an astonishing way!"
He said: "That is what we were seeking."
So they returned upon their own tracks, retracing them, and found an obedient one among Our obedient ones, to whom We had granted a benevolence from Us and to whom We had taught, from Us, a knowledge.
Moussa said to him: "May I follow you, on condition that you teach me, of what you have been taught, a rectitude?"
He said: "You will never be able to be patient with me.
And how would you be patient about what you do not encompass by experience?"
He said: "You will find me, if God wills, patient,
قال ستجدني إن شآء ٱلله صابراand I will not disobey you in anything."
He said: "If then you follow me, do not question me about anything, until I myself make mention of it to you."
So they set off, until, when they had boarded the boat, he made a hole in it.
He said: "Have you made a hole in it to drown its occupants? You have done a very grave thing!"
He said: "Did I not tell you that you would never be able to be patient with me?"
He said: "Do not take me to task for what I forgot, and do not burden me, in my affair, with excessive hardship."
So they set off, until, meeting a young boy, he killed him. He said: "Have you killed a pure Self, without it being for [another] Self? You have done a horrible thing!"
He said: "Did I not tell you that you would never be able to be patient with me?"
He said: "If I question you about anything after this, do not keep me as a companion; you will then have, from me, an excuse."
So they set off, until, arriving at the people of a city, they asked them for food; but they refused to receive them as guests. There they found a wall about to collapse, and he set it upright.
He said: "Had you wished, you could have taken a reward for that."
قال لو شئت لتخذت عليه أجراHe said: "This is the parting between you and me;
I will tell you the interpretation of what you were not able to bear with patience.
As for the boat, it belonged to destitute people working at sea; I wanted to damage it, for behind them was a king who was seizing every [sound] boat by force.
As for the boy, his father and mother were believers, and we feared that he would overwhelm them with excess and disowning,
وأما ٱلغلم فكان أبواه مؤمنين فخشينآ أن يرهقهما طغينا وكفراand we wanted their Guardian to give them in exchange one [a child] better than him in purity and closer in tenderness.
فأردنآ أن يبدلهما ربهما خيرا منه زكوة وأقرب رحماAs for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys of the Capital, and beneath it was a treasure belonging to them;
وأما ٱلجدار فكان لغلمين يتيمين في ٱلمدينة وكان تحته كنز لهماtheir father was righteous, and your Guardian wanted them to reach their full maturity and extract their treasure themselves, as a benevolence from your Guardian;
وكان أبوهما صلحا فأراد ربك أن يبلغآ أشدهما ويستخرجا كنزهما رحمة من ربكand I did not do that of my own accord.
That is the interpretation of what you were not able to bear with patience."
And they ask you about Dhul-Qarnayn.
Say: "I will recite to you a remembrance of him."
We established him on the earth, and gave him, of everything, a link; he then followed a link, until, having reached the setting-place of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring, and found by it a people.
We said: "O Dhul-Qarnayn, either you punish them, or you adopt toward them a fine conduct."
He said: "As for the one who has done wrong, we shall punish him; then he will be brought back to his Guardian, who will punish him with a horrible punishment.
As for the one who believes and does a righteous deed, he will have the finest [of outcomes] as recompense,
وأما من ءامن وعمل صلحا فله جزآء ٱلحسنىand we shall speak to him, of our affair, an easy word."
Then he followed a link, until, having reached the rising-place of the sun, he found it rising on a people to whom We had given, besides it, no shelter. So it was.
And We encompassed by knowledge all that concerned him.
Then he followed a link, until, having reached [a place] between the two barriers, he found, on the near side of them, a people who could hardly understand any saying.
They said: "O Dhul-Qarnayn, Yajuj and Majuj are spreading corruption in the land; shall we grant you a tribute, on condition that you place between us and them a barrier?"
قالوا يذا ٱلقرنين إن يأجوج ومأجوج مفسدون في ٱلأرض فهل نجعل لك خرجا على أن تجعل بيننا وبينهم سداHe said: "That in which my Guardian has established me is better [than your tribute];
قال ما مكني فيه ربي خيرso help me with strength, and I will set up between you and them a rampart.
Bring me blocks of iron."
Then, when he had leveled the space between the two sides, he said: "Blow!"
Then, when he had made it fire, he said: "Bring me, that I may pour molten naphtha over it."
They were able neither to scale it, nor to pierce it.
فما ٱسطعوا أن يظهروه وما ٱستطعوا له نقباHe said: "This is a benevolence from my Guardian;
قال هذا رحمة من ربيbut when the promise of my Guardian comes, He will reduce it to dust — and the promise of my Guardian is true."
We shall leave them, that Day, surging one against another,
وتركنا بعضهم يومئذ يموج في بعضand it will be blown into the Horn, and We shall gather them in a single gathering.
And We shall present, that Day, Jahannam to those who disown, in full view — those whose eyes were under a veil, away from My remembrance, and who could not hear at all.
Have those who disown then thought they could take My obedient ones, besides Me, as allies?
We have prepared Jahannam as a lodging for those who disown.
Say: "Shall I inform you of those who are the greatest losers in their deeds — those whose effort has gone astray in the present life, while they think they are doing well?"
Those are the ones who disowned the signs of their Guardian and the meeting with Him: their works have collapsed, and We shall not assign them, on the Day of Appearance, any weight.
Such: their recompense will be Jahannam, for having disowned and having taken My signs and My messengers in mockery.
Those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have, as a lodging, the Gardens of the Firdaws, wherein they will abide eternally, with no desire to turn away from it.
Say: "If the sea were ink for the words of my Guardian, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Guardian were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it in reinforcement."
Say: "I am only a human like you; it is revealed to me that your deity is a single deity.
So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Guardian, let him do a righteous deed and associate no one in obedience to his Guardian."
