Al-Hajj
Neither Their Meat nor Their Blood
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. O mankind, guard yourselves against your Guardian,
بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم يأيها ٱلناس ٱتقوا ربكمfor the tremor of the Hour is an immense thing.
إن زلزلة ٱلساعة شىء عظيمThe Day you see it, every woman with a child in her care will forget the child she was caring for, and every pregnant one will deliver her burden, and you will see mankind as if drunk, though they are not drunk — but the punishment of God is severe.
يوم ترونها تذهل كل مرضعة عمآ أرضعت وتضع كل ذات حمل حملها وترى ٱلناس سكرى وما هم بسكرى ولكن عذاب ٱلله شديدAnd among mankind is he who argues about God without knowledge and follows every rebellious Diverter, for whom it has been decreed that whoever takes him as an ally, he will misguide him and guide him to the punishment of the Inferno.
ومن ٱلناس من يجدل في ٱلله بغير علم ويتبع كل شيطن مريد كتب عليه أنه من تولاه فأنه يضله ويهديه إلى عذاب ٱلسعيرO mankind, if you are in doubt about the Raising, then indeed We created you from dust, then from a drop, then from a clinging clot, then from a lump of flesh, formed and unformed, that We may make things clear to you.
يأيها ٱلناس إن كنتم في ريب من ٱلبعث فإنا خلقنكم من تراب ثم من نطفة ثم من علقة ثم من مضغة مخلقة وغير مخلقة لنبين لكمAnd We settle in the wombs whatever We will until an appointed term,
ونقر في ٱلأرحام ما نشآء إلى أجل مسمىthen We bring you out as a child, that you may then reach your full maturity.
ثم نخرجكم طفلا ثم لتبلغوا أشدكمAnd among you is he who is kept faithfully [early], and among you is he who is returned to the most decrepit age, so that he knows nothing after having known [much].
ومنكم من يتوفى ومنكم من يرد إلى أرذل ٱلعمر لكيلا يعلم من بعد علم شياAnd you see the earth barren, but when We send down water upon it, it stirs, swells, and grows every splendid pair.
وترى ٱلأرض هامدة فإذآ أنزلنا عليها ٱلمآء ٱهتزت وربت وأنبتت من كل زوج بهيجThat is because God is the Truth, He gives life to the dead, He is capable of all things, the Hour is coming — no doubt about it — and God will raise up those who are in the graves.
ذلك بأن ٱلله هو ٱلحق وأنه يحي ٱلموتى وأنه على كل شىء قدير وأن ٱلساعة ءاتية لا ريب فيها وأن ٱلله يبعث من في ٱلقبورAnd among mankind is he who argues about God without knowledge, without guidance, and without an illuminating Scripture, turning his side away in arrogance, to lead [others] astray from the way of God.
ومن ٱلناس من يجدل في ٱلله بغير علم ولا هدى ولا كتب منير ثاني عطفه ليضل عن سبيل ٱللهFor him is disgrace in the present life,
له في ٱلدنيا خزيand We will make him taste, on the Day of Appearance, the punishment of the burning fire.
ونذيقه يوم ٱلقيمة عذاب ٱلحريقThat is for what your hands have prepared; and God is not unjust to the constrained [under compulsion].
ذلك بما قدمت يداك وأن ٱلله ليس بظلم للعبيدAnd among mankind is he who obeys God in a distorted manner: if good befalls him, he is content with it, but if a trial befalls him, he turns back on his face — losing both the present life and the last life.
ومن ٱلناس من يعبد ٱلله على حرف فإن أصابه خير ٱطمأن به وإن أصابته فتنة ٱنقلب على وجهه خسر ٱلدنيا وٱلءاخرةThat is the manifest loss.
ذلك هو ٱلخسران ٱلمبينHe calls upon, besides God, that which can neither harm him nor benefit him.
يدعوا من دون ٱلله ما لا يضره وما لا ينفعهThat is indeed far-reaching error — he calls upon
ذلك هو ٱلضلل ٱلبعيد يدعواone whose harm is nearer than his benefit. What a wretched guarantor, and what a wretched companion!
لمن ضره أقرب من نفعه لبئس ٱلمولى ولبئس ٱلعشيرIndeed, God admits those who have believed and done righteous deeds into gardens beneath which rivers flow.
إن ٱلله يدخل ٱلذين ءامنوا وعملوا ٱلصلحت جنت تجري من تحتها ٱلأنهرIndeed, God does what He wills.
إن ٱلله يفعل ما يريدWhoever thinks that God will never help him in the present life and the last life, let him extend a link toward the sky, then let him withdraw from it, then let him wait and look whether his scheme removes what enrages him.
من كان يظن أن لن ينصره ٱلله في ٱلدنيا وٱلءاخرة فليمدد بسبب إلى ٱلسمآء ثم ليقطع فلينظر هل يذهبن كيده ما يغيظThus have We sent it down as clear signs,
وكذلك أنزلنه ءايت بينتand [know] that God guides whom He wills.
وأن ٱلله يهدي من يريدThose who have believed, the Reoriented, the Aspirants, the Helpers, the Magians, and those who ascribe partners to God — God will separate between them on the Day of Appearance.
إن ٱلذين ءامنوا وٱلذين هادوا وٱلصبين وٱلنصرى وٱلمجوس وٱلذين أشركوا إن ٱلله يفصل بينهم يوم ٱلقيمةIndeed, God is witness over all things.
إن ٱلله على كل شىء شهيدHave you not seen that to God prostrate whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth, the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the living beings, and many among mankind?
ألم تر أن ٱلله يسجد له من في ٱلسموت ومن في ٱلأرض وٱلشمس وٱلقمر وٱلنجوم وٱلجبال وٱلشجر وٱلدوآب وكثير من ٱلناسAnd upon many [others], the punishment has proven true.
وكثير حق عليه ٱلعذابAnd whoever God degrades has none to honor him.
ومن يهن ٱلله فما له من مكرمIndeed, God does what He wills.
إن ٱلله يفعل ما يشآءThese are two opposing parties who have quarreled concerning their Guardian.
هذان خصمان ٱختصموا في ربهمThose who disown will have clothes of fire cut out for them; boiling water will be poured over their heads, melting what is in their bellies as well as their skins.
فٱلذين كفروا قطعت لهم ثياب من نار يصب من فوق رءوسهم ٱلحميم يصهر به ما في بطونهم وٱلجلودAnd for them are maces of iron.
ولهم مقمع من حديدEvery time they wish to come out of it, out of anguish, they will be returned to it:
كلمآ أرادوا أن يخرجوا منها من غم أعيدوا فيها"Taste the punishment of the burning fire!"
وذوقوا عذاب ٱلحريقIndeed, God admits those who have believed and done righteous deeds into gardens beneath which rivers flow; they will be ornamented therein with bracelets of gold and pearls,
إن ٱلله يدخل ٱلذين ءامنوا وعملوا ٱلصلحت جنت تجري من تحتها ٱلأنهر يحلون فيها من أساور من ذهب ولؤلؤاand their garments therein will be of silk.
ولباسهم فيها حريرAnd they were guided to the good in saying,
وهدوا إلى ٱلطيب من ٱلقولand they were guided to the path of the Praiseworthy.
وهدوا إلى صرط ٱلحميدIndeed, those who disown and turn [people] away from the way of God and from the inviolable place of prostration, which We made for the people equally, whether one dwells there or is passing through —
إن ٱلذين كفروا ويصدون عن سبيل ٱلله وٱلمسجد ٱلحرام ٱلذي جعلنه للناس سوآء ٱلعكف فيه وٱلبادand whoever intends therein a deviation through injustice, We will make him taste a painful punishment.
ومن يرد فيه بإلحاد بظلم نذقه من عذاب أليمAnd remember when We established for Ibrahim the site of the House: "Do not associate anything with Me,
وإذ بوأنا لإبرهيم مكان ٱلبيت أن لا تشرك بي شياand purify My House for those who frequent it, those who maintain it, and those who kneel in service and submit [in allegiance]."
وطهر بيتي للطآئفين وٱلقآئمين وٱلركع ٱلسجودAnd proclaim to mankind the Hajj: they will come to you on foot and on every lean mount, coming from every distant, deep-cut path, to witness the benefits [granted] to them and to mention the name of God on known days over the livestock beasts He has provided them.
وأذن في ٱلناس بٱلحج يأتوك رجالا وعلى كل ضامر يأتين من كل فج عميق ليشهدوا منفع لهم ويذكروا ٱسم ٱلله في أيام معلومت على ما رزقهم من بهيمة ٱلأنعمSo eat of it and feed the distressed, the poor.
فكلوا منها وأطعموا ٱلبآئس ٱلفقيرThen let them put an end to their unkempt state, be faithful to their commitments, and frequent the freed House.
ثم ليقضوا تفثهم وليوفوا نذورهم وليطوفوا بٱلبيت ٱلعتيقThat is so.
ذلكAnd whoever magnifies the sacred prohibitions of God, it is better for him with his Guardian.
ومن يعظم حرمت ٱلله فهو خير له عند ربهAnd lawful to you is the cattle, except what is recited to you:
وأحلت لكم ٱلأنعم إلا ما يتلى عليكمso avoid the defilement of idols, and avoid the saying of falsification, wholly turned toward God, associating nothing with Him.
فٱجتنبوا ٱلرجس من ٱلأوثن وٱجتنبوا قول ٱلزور حنفآء لله غير مشركين بهAnd whoever associates [others] with God, it is as though he had fallen from the sky, and the birds snatch him away, or the wind sweeps him down into a far-off place.
ومن يشرك بٱلله فكأنما خر من ٱلسمآء فتخطفه ٱلطير أو تهوي به ٱلريح في مكان سحيقThat is so.
ذلكAnd whoever magnifies the perceptible markers of God — that is part of the guardedness of the cores.
ومن يعظم شعئر ٱلله فإنها من تقوى ٱلقلوبFor you in them are benefits until an appointed term; then their place of release is at the freed House.
لكم فيها منفع إلى أجل مسمى ثم محلهآ إلى ٱلبيت ٱلعتيقAnd for every community We have assigned a beneficent practice, that they may mention the name of God over the livestock beasts He has provided them.
ولكل أمة جعلنا منسكا ليذكروا ٱسم ٱلله على ما رزقهم من بهيمة ٱلأنعمSo your deity is a single deity.
فإلهكم إله وحدSo to Him alone be true.
فله أسلمواAnd give good news to those who lower themselves, whose cores tremble when God is mentioned, who are patient over what befalls them, who maintain the Contact, and who spend from what We have provided them.
وبشر ٱلمخبتين ٱلذين إذا ذكر ٱلله وجلت قلوبهم وٱلصبرين على مآ أصابهم وٱلمقيمي ٱلصلوة ومما رزقنهم ينفقونAnd the sacrificial animals — We have made them for you among the perceptible markers of God; in them is good for you.
وٱلبدن جعلنها لكم من شعئر ٱلله لكم فيها خيرSo mention the name of God over them, while they are lined up in rows;
فٱذكروا ٱسم ٱلله عليها صوآفthen when their flanks fall [to the ground], eat of them and feed the one who is content without asking and the one who asks.
فإذا وجبت جنوبها فكلوا منها وأطعموا ٱلقانع وٱلمعترThus have We subjected them to you, that you may be grateful.
كذلك سخرنها لكم لعلكم تشكرونNeither their flesh nor their blood reaches God, but the guardedness from you reaches Him.
لن ينال ٱلله لحومها ولا دمآؤها ولكن يناله ٱلتقوى منكمThus has He subjected them to you, that you may magnify God for having guided you.
كذلك سخرها لكم لتكبروا ٱلله على ما هدىكمAnd give good news to those who do good.
وبشر ٱلمحسنينIndeed, God defends those who believe.
إن ٱلله يدفع عن ٱلذين ءامنواIndeed, God does not love any grand traitor, grand disowner.
إن ٱلله لا يحب كل خوان كفورPermission is given to those who are being fought, because they have been wronged —
أذن للذين يقتلون بأنهم ظلمواand God is surely able to help them.
وإن ٱلله على نصرهم لقديرthose who were expelled from their abodes without right, only because they said, "Our Guardian is God."
ٱلذين أخرجوا من ديرهم بغير حق إلآ أن يقولوا ربنا ٱللهAnd were it not for God's defense of people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished hermitages, churches, synagogues, and places of prostration wherein the name of God is much mentioned.
ولولا دفع ٱلله ٱلناس بعضهم ببعض لهدمت صومع وبيع وصلوت ومسجد يذكر فيها ٱسم ٱلله كثيراAnd God will surely help whoever helps Him —
ولينصرن ٱلله من ينصرهGod is surely the Strong, the All-Powerful.
إن ٱلله لقوي عزيزthose who, if We establish them in the land, maintain the Contact, render the purifying alms, enjoin what is recognized [by custom], and forbid what is disavowed.
ٱلذين إن مكنهم في ٱلأرض أقاموا ٱلصلوة وءاتوا ٱلزكوة وأمروا بٱلمعروف ونهوا عن ٱلمنكرAnd to God belongs the outcome of all affairs.
ولله عقبة ٱلأمورAnd if they deny you, before them the people of Nuh, the Recidivists [Aad], the Depleters [Thamud], the people of Ibrahim, the people of Lut, and the people of Madyan denied —
وإن يكذبوك فقد كذبت قبلهم قوم نوح وعاد وثمود وقوم إبرهيم وقوم لوط وأصحب مدينand Moussa too was denied.
وكذب موسىSo I granted a delay to those who disowned, then I seized them:
فأمليت للكفرين ثم أخذتهمand how was My disavowal!
فكيف كان نكيرHow many a city have We annihilated while it was committing injustice: they now stand empty despite their edifices, with an abandoned well and a lofty, deserted palace!
فكأين من قرية أهلكنها وهي ظالمة فهي خاوية على عروشها وبئر معطلة وقصر مشيدHave they not traveled through the land, so as to have cores with which to reason, or ears with which to hear?
أفلم يسيروا في ٱلأرض فتكون لهم قلوب يعقلون بهآ أو ءاذان يسمعون بهاFor it is indeed not the eyes that are blind, but rather the cores that are within the chests.
فإنها لا تعمى ٱلأبصر ولكن تعمى ٱلقلوب ٱلتي في ٱلصدورAnd they urge you to hasten the punishment,
ويستعجلونك بٱلعذابthough God will never fail His promise.
ولن يخلف ٱلله وعدهAnd indeed, a day with your Guardian is like a thousand years of those you count.
وإن يوما عند ربك كألف سنة مما تعدونAnd how many a city to which I granted a delay while it was committing injustice, then I seized it —
وكأين من قرية أمليت لها وهي ظالمة ثم أخذتهاand to Me is the destination.
وإلى ٱلمصيرSay, "O mankind, I am only a clear warner to you."
قل يأيها ٱلناس إنمآ أنا لكم نذير مبينSo those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have forgiveness and generous provision.
فٱلذين ءامنوا وعملوا ٱلصلحت لهم مغفرة ورزق كريمBut those who strive against Our signs, seeking to thwart [them], those are the companions of the Blaze.
وٱلذين سعوا في ءايتنا معجزين أولئك أصحب ٱلجحيمAnd We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he had a wish, the Diverter would insert something into it. God then transcribes what the Diverter inserts, and He affirms His signs — God is All-Knowing, Wise — so that this transcription may be a trial for those in whose cores is a sickness and whose cores are hardened.
ومآ أرسلنا من قبلك من رسول ولا نبي إلآ إذا تمنى ألقى ٱلشيطن في أمنيته فينسخ ٱلله ما يلقي ٱلشيطن ثم يحكم ٱلله ءايته وٱلله عليم حكيم ليجعل ما يلقي ٱلشيطن فتنة للذين في قلوبهم مرض وٱلقاسية قلوبهمAnd surely, the wrongdoers are in a deep rupture.
وإن ٱلظلمين لفي شقاق بعيدAnd so that those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Guardian, and believe in it, and their cores lower themselves before it.
وليعلم ٱلذين أوتوا ٱلعلم أنه ٱلحق من ربك فيؤمنوا به فتخبت له قلوبهمAnd indeed, God surely guides those who believe to a straight path.
وإن ٱلله لهاد ٱلذين ءامنوا إلى صرط مستقيمAnd those who disown will not cease to be in doubt of it until the Hour comes upon them unexpectedly, or there comes to them the punishment of a barren day.
ولا يزال ٱلذين كفروا في مرية منه حتى تأتيهم ٱلساعة بغتة أو يأتيهم عذاب يوم عقيمThe dominion, that Day, belongs to God.
ٱلملك يومئذ للهHe will judge between them.
يحكم بينهمSo those who believed and did righteous deeds will be in gardens of bliss.
فٱلذين ءامنوا وعملوا ٱلصلحت في جنت ٱلنعيمAnd those who disowned and denied Our signs — those will have a degrading punishment.
وٱلذين كفروا وكذبوا بايتنا فأولئك لهم عذاب مهينAnd those who emigrated in the way of God and then were killed or died — God will surely provide them with a good provision.
وٱلذين هاجروا في سبيل ٱلله ثم قتلوا أو ماتوا ليرزقنهم ٱلله رزقا حسناAnd indeed, God is surely the best of providers.
وإن ٱلله لهو خير ٱلرزقينHe will surely admit them to an entrance with which they will be pleased.
ليدخلنهم مدخلا يرضونهAnd surely, God is All-Knowing, Forbearing.
وإن ٱلله لعليم حليمThat is so.
ذلكAnd whoever pays back in kind to the exact measure of what was done to him, and then is aggressed against again — God will surely help him.
ومن عاقب بمثل ما عوقب به ثم بغي عليه لينصرنه ٱللهIndeed, God is surely the One who effaces, Most-Forgiving.
إن ٱلله لعفو غفورThat is because God causes the night to enter into the day and the day to enter into the night, and because God is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
ذلك بأن ٱلله يولج ٱليل في ٱلنهار ويولج ٱلنهار في ٱليل وأن ٱلله سميع بصيرThat is because God is the Truth, and what you invoke besides Him is falsehood, and because God is the Most High, the Great.
ذلك بأن ٱلله هو ٱلحق وأن ما يدعون من دونه هو ٱلبطل وأن ٱلله هو ٱلعلي ٱلكبيرHave you not seen that God sends down water from the sky, and the earth becomes green?
ألم تر أن ٱلله أنزل من ٱلسمآء مآء فتصبح ٱلأرض مخضرةIndeed, God is Subtle, Informed.
إن ٱلله لطيف خبيرTo Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.
له ما في ٱلسموت وما في ٱلأرضAnd indeed, God is surely the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy.
وإن ٱلله لهو ٱلغني ٱلحميدHave you not seen that God has subjected to you whatever is on the earth, and the ship which sails through the sea by His command?
ألم تر أن ٱلله سخر لكم ما في ٱلأرض وٱلفلك تجري في ٱلبحر بأمرهAnd He withholds the sky from falling upon the earth, except by His permission.
ويمسك ٱلسمآء أن تقع على ٱلأرض إلا بإذنهGod is surely, toward mankind, full of kindness, Benevolent.
إن ٱلله بٱلناس لرءوف رحيمAnd it is He who gave you life, then will cause you to die,
وهو ٱلذي أحياكم ثم يميتكمthen will give you life again.
ثم يحييكمIndeed, the human being is surely a great disowner.
إن ٱلإنسن لكفورFor every community We have assigned a beneficent practice which it carries out.
لكل أمة جعلنا منسكا هم ناسكوهSo let them not contest with you concerning the matter,
فلا ينزعنك في ٱلأمرand call to your Guardian,
وٱدع إلى ربكfor you are surely upon straight guidance.
إنك لعلى هدى مستقيمAnd if they argue with you, say, "God knows best what you do.
وإن جدلوك فقل ٱلله أعلم بما تعملونGod will judge between you on the Day of Appearance concerning that in which you used to differ."
ٱلله يحكم بينكم يوم ٱلقيمة فيما كنتم فيه تختلفونDo you not know that God knows whatever is in the heaven and the earth?
ألم تعلم أن ٱلله يعلم ما في ٱلسمآء وٱلأرضIndeed, that is in a record:
إن ذلك في كتبthat is indeed easy for God.
إن ذلك على ٱلله يسيرAnd they obey, besides God, that for which He has sent down no authority and of which they have no knowledge.
ويعبدون من دون ٱلله ما لم ينزل به سلطنا وما ليس لهم به علمAnd for the wrongdoers there is no helper.
وما للظلمين من نصيرAnd when Our clear signs are recited to them, you recognize disavowal on the faces of those who disown; they nearly assault those who recite Our signs to them.
وإذا تتلى عليهم ءايتنا بينت تعرف في وجوه ٱلذين كفروا ٱلمنكر يكادون يسطون بٱلذين يتلون عليهم ءايتناSay, "Shall I inform you of something worse than that?
قل أفأنبئكم بشر من ذلكمThe Fire, which God has promised to those who disown —
ٱلنار وعدها ٱلله ٱلذين كفرواand what an evil destination!"
وبئس ٱلمصيرO mankind! An example has been put forth, so listen to it:
يأيها ٱلناس ضرب مثل فٱستمعوا لهindeed, those you invoke besides God will never create a fly, even if they gathered together for that.
إن ٱلذين تدعون من دون ٱلله لن يخلقوا ذبابا ولو ٱجتمعوا لهAnd if the fly should snatch away something from them, they could not recover it from it.
وإن يسلبهم ٱلذباب شيا لا يستنقذوه منهWeak are the seeker and the sought!
ضعف ٱلطالب وٱلمطلوبThey did not measure God with His true measure.
ما قدروا ٱلله حق قدرهGod is surely the Strong, the All-Powerful.
إن ٱلله لقوي عزيزGod chooses from the Agents messengers, and from mankind [as well].
ٱلله يصطفي من ٱلملئكة رسلا ومن ٱلناسIndeed, God is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
إن ٱلله سميع بصيرHe knows what is before them and what is behind them.
يعلم ما بين أيديهم وما خلفهمAnd it is to God that all matters return.
وإلى ٱلله ترجع ٱلأمورO you who have believed! Kneel, prostrate, obey your Guardian, and do good, that you may succeed.
يأيها ٱلذين ءامنوا ٱركعوا وٱسجدوا وٱعبدوا ربكم وٱفعلوا ٱلخير لعلكم تفلحونAnd strive for God with the striving due to Him.
وجهدوا في ٱلله حق جهادهIt is He who has chosen you,
هو ٱجتبىكمand He has not placed upon you, in the Law, any hardship —
وما جعل عليكم في ٱلدين من حرج[it is] the way of your father Ibrahim.
ملة أبيكم إبرهيمIt is He who named you the true [obedient ones of God] before, and in this [Recitation], so that the messenger may be a witness over you, and that you may be witnesses over mankind.
هو سمىكم ٱلمسلمين من قبل وفي هذا ليكون ٱلرسول شهيدا عليكم وتكونوا شهدآء على ٱلناسSo maintain the Contact and render the purifying alms,
فأقيموا ٱلصلوة وءاتوا ٱلزكوةand hold fast to God:
وٱعتصموا بٱللهHe is your nearest Guarantor —
هو مولىكمwhat an excellent Guarantor,
فنعم ٱلمولىand what an excellent helper!
ونعم ٱلنصير
