Al-Imran

The Rope of God

  • In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Mim.

  • God, there is no deity but Him,

  • the Living, the Self-Subsisting. He sent down upon you the Scripture, in truth, confirming what precedes it,

  • and He sent down, before, the Tawrah and the Injil, a guidance for mankind, and He sent down the Discernment.

  • Those who have disowned the signs of God will have a severe punishment.

  • God is All-Powerful, possessor of vengeance.

  • Nothing, on earth or in the sky, escapes God.

  • It is He who shapes you in the wombs as He wills.

  • There is no deity but Him,

  • the All-Powerful, the Wise.

    ٱلعزيز ٱلحكيم
  • It is He who sent down upon you the Scripture;

  • in it are signs of firm terms, which are the foundation of the Scripture, and others, subject to resemblance.

  • As for those in whose cores is a deviation, they follow what, in the Scripture, lends itself to resemblance, in pursuit of the trial and in pursuit of its interpretation;

  • but none knows its interpretation, except God.

    وما يعلم تأويله إلا ٱلله
  • And those who are firmly rooted in knowledge say: "We believe in it; all of it comes from our Guardian";

  • and only the possessors of intelligence take heed.

    وما يذكر إلآ أولوا ٱلألبب
  • "Our Guardian, do not let our cores deviate after You have guided us, and grant us, from Yourself, a benevolence;

  • You are indeed, You, the Great Bestower.

  • Our Guardian, You are the One who gathers mankind for a day without doubt possible.

  • God indeed does not fail His promise."

  • Indeed, those who disown, neither their goods nor their children will avail them at all against God.

  • Those are the ones who will fuel the Fire, like the conduct of the clan of Fir'awn,

  • and of those before them, who denied Our signs; God then seized them for their offenses.

  • God is severe in sanction.

  • Say to those who disown: "You will be defeated, and gathered toward Jahannam."

  • And what an evil bed!

  • You had a sign in those two forces that met:

  • one fought in the way of God, and the other disowned, seeing it, with the naked eye, twice as numerous as itself.

  • God reinforces, by His help, whom He wills.

  • There is surely a lesson in that for the possessors of sight.

  • The love of passions has been embellished for people: women, children, heaped treasures of gold and silver, thoroughbred horses, cattle, and crops.

  • That is the enjoyment of the present life;

    ذلك متع ٱلحيوة ٱلدنيا
  • but it is with God that the best destination is found.

  • Say: "Shall I inform you of something better than that?

  • For those who guard themselves, with their Guardian, gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally, purified spouses, and a good pleasure from God."

  • God sees perfectly His obedient ones,

  • those who say: "Our Guardian, we have believed; forgive us, then, our offenses, and preserve us from the punishment of the Fire",

  • the patient, the truthful, the devoted, those who spend, and those who ask forgiveness before dawn.

  • God bears witness, and so do the Agents and the possessors of knowledge, that there is no deity but Him, standing firm in equity.

  • There is no deity but Him,

  • the All-Powerful, the Wise.

  • The Law, with God, is being true to Him alone.

  • And those to whom the Scripture was given diverged only after knowledge had come to them,

  • out of aggression among themselves.

  • And whoever disowns the signs of God — God is swift in reckoning.

  • If they dispute with you, say then: "I render my direction true to God alone, as do those who have followed me."

  • And say to those to whom the Scripture was given, and to the people without a prior Scripture: "Have you become true to God alone?"

  • If they become so, they are then rightly guided;

    فإن أسلموا فقد ٱهتدوا
  • and if they turn away, only the transmission is incumbent upon you.

  • God sees perfectly His obedient ones.

  • Those who disown the signs of God, kill the prophets without right, and kill those who, among people, order equity — announce to them a painful punishment.

  • Those are the ones whose works have collapsed, in the present life and in the last life,

  • and they will have no helpers.

  • Have you not seen those to whom a portion of the Scripture was given, called to the Scripture of God so that it may judge between them, then a group of them turns away, resolutely?

  • That is because they said: "The Fire will touch us only for a counted number of days"; and what they used to invent deceived them in their Law.

  • How then, when We will have gathered them for a day without doubt possible, and every Self will have been fully repaid for what it has earned, without being wronged?

  • Say: "O God, Sovereign of dominion! You give dominion to whom You will, and You strip dominion from whom You will; You honor whom You will, and You abase whom You will; good is in Your hand.

  • You are indeed capable of all things.

  • You make the night penetrate into the day, and You make the day penetrate into the night; You bring forth the living from the dead, and You bring forth the dead from the living; and You provide sustenance to whom You will, without measure."

  • Let not the believers take those who disown as allies, besides the believers;

  • and whoever does that has nothing more to do with God — except if you guard yourselves from them as a precaution.

  • God warns you against Himself,

  • and to God is the destination.

  • Say: "Whether you hide what is in your chests, or show it, God knows it.

  • And He knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth.

  • God is capable of all things.

  • The day when every Self will find present what it has done of good,

  • and what it has done of evil, it would wish there were between that and itself an immense distance.

  • God warns you against Himself.

  • God is full of kindness toward His obedient ones.

  • Say: "If you love God, follow me: God will love you and forgive you your offenses.

  • God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent."

    وٱلله غفور رحيم
  • Say: "Obey God and the messenger";

    قل أطيعوا ٱلله وٱلرسول
  • and if they turn away, God does not love those who disown.

  • God has indeed chosen Adam, Nuh, the family of Ibrahim, and the family of Imran, above all beings, descendants one from another.

  • God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

  • remember when the wife of Imran said: "My Guardian, I devote to You what is in my belly, wholly consecrated; accept it, then, from me.

  • You are indeed, You, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."

  • Then, when she gave birth to her, she said: "My Guardian, I have given birth to her, a girl" — God knew better, though, what she had given birth to —

  • "and the male is not like the female;

    وليس ٱلذكر كٱلأنثى
  • I have given her the attribute Maryam,

  • and I place her, and her descendants, under Your protection, against the banished Diverter."

  • Her Guardian received her with a beautiful reception, and made her grow with a beautiful growth,

  • and entrusted her care to Zakariya.

  • Every time Zakariya entered upon her in the oratory, he found near her a provision.

  • He said: "O Maryam! from where does this come to you?"

  • She said: "It comes from God.

  • God provides sustenance to whom He wills, without measure."

  • Right there, Zakariya invoked his Guardian.

  • He said: "My Guardian, grant me, from Yourself, an excellent offspring; You are the Hearer of invocation."

  • The Agents called him while he was making contact in the oratory: "God announces to you Yahya, confirming a word from God, a chief, a man of total continence, and a prophet, among the righteous."

  • He said: "My Guardian, how shall I have a boy, when old age has already reached me, and my wife is barren?"

  • He said: "Thus it is:

  • God does what He wills."

  • He said: "My Guardian, appoint for me a sign."

  • He said: "Your sign will be that you will not speak to people except by gestures, for three days.

  • And remember your Guardian abundantly, and glorify Him in the evening and at dawn."

  • And remember when the Agents said: "O Maryam! God has chosen you, purified you, and chosen you above the women of all beings.

  • O Maryam! be devoted toward your Guardian, prostrate, and bow with those who bow."

  • That is part of the information about what escapes the senses, which We reveal to you.

  • You were not with them when they cast their reeds [to draw lots] as to which of them would take charge of Maryam,

  • and you were not with them when they quarreled. remember when the Agents said: "O Maryam! God announces to you a word from Himself,

  • whose attribute will be Al-Massih, Issa, son of Maryam, of high standing in the present life and in the last life, and among those brought near.

  • He will speak to people in the cradle and in maturity,

  • and will be among the righteous."

  • She said: "My Guardian, how shall I have a child, when no human has touched me?"

  • He said: "Thus it is:

  • God creates what He wills.

  • When He decrees a thing, He only says to it: Be",

  • and it is.

  • "And He will teach him the Code, wisdom, the Tawrah and the Injil, and [will send him as] a messenger to the sons of Israel: I bring you a sign from your Guardian:

  • I fashion for you, from clay, the form of a bird, then I breathe into it, and it becomes a bird, with God's permission.

  • And I heal the born-blind and the leper, and I bring the dead back to life, with God's permission.

  • And I inform you of what you eat and what you store up in your houses.

  • There is surely in that a sign for you, if you are believers.

  • And [I come] confirming what, of the Tawrah, precedes me, and to make lawful for you a part of what was forbidden to you.

  • I bring you a sign from your Guardian;

    وجئتكم باية من ربكم
  • guard yourselves, then, toward God, and obey me.

  • God is indeed my Guardian and your Guardian; obey Him, then.

  • That is a straight path."

  • When Issa perceived disowning from them, he said: "Who will be my helpers toward God?"

  • The disciples said: "We are the helpers of God.

  • We believe in God, and bear witness that we are true to Him alone.

  • Our Guardian, we have believed in what You have sent down, and we have followed the messenger; inscribe us, then, among the witnesses."

  • They plotted, and God plotted [in return],

  • and God is the best of those who plot.

  • remember when God said: "O Issa! I am going to take you back to Me, raise you to Me, and purify you from those who disowned,

  • and place those who followed you above those who disowned, until the Day of Appearance.

  • Then to Me will be your return, and I will judge between you concerning what you used to differ over.

  • As for those who disowned, I will punish them with a severe punishment, in the present life and in the last life,

  • and they will have no helpers.

  • And as for those who have believed and done righteous deeds, He will pay them their rewards in full.

  • God does not love the wrongdoers."

  • That is what We recite to you of the signs and the wise Reminder.

  • The likeness of Issa, with God, is like that of Adam:

  • He created him from earth, then said to him: "Be",

  • and he was.

    فيكون
  • That is the truth from your Guardian;

    ٱلحق من ربك
  • so do not be among those who doubt.

  • To whoever would dispute with you about this, after knowledge has come to you, say: "Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then let us pray fervently, and call the curse of God upon the liars."

  • This is surely the true account,

  • and there is no deity but God.

  • And God is surely the All-Powerful, the Wise.

  • If they turn away, God is All-Knowing of the sowers of corruption.

  • Say: "O people of the Scripture! come to an equitable word between us and you: that we obey none but God, that we associate nothing with Him, and that none of us take others as masters besides God."

  • If they turn away, say then: "Bear witness that we are true to God alone."

  • O people of the Scripture! why do you dispute concerning Ibrahim,

  • when the Tawrah and the Injil were sent down only after him?

  • Will you not then reason?

  • Here you are disputing about that of which you have some knowledge; but why do you dispute about that of which you have no knowledge?

  • God knows,

  • and you do not know.

  • Ibrahim was neither Reoriented nor a Helper, but he was wholly turned toward God, true to Him alone,

  • and he was not among those who associate.

  • The people closest to Ibrahim are surely those who followed him, as well as this prophet and those who have believed.

  • God is the protector of the believers.

    وٱلله ولي ٱلمؤمنين
  • A group among the people of the Scripture would have liked to lead you astray;

  • but they lead astray none but themselves, without realizing it.

  • O people of the Scripture! why do you disown the signs of God, when you bear witness to them?

  • O people of the Scripture! why do you cover the truth with falsehood, and hide the truth, when you know?

  • And a group among the people of the Scripture said: "Believe in what has been revealed to those who have believed, at the start of the day, and disown it at its end, perhaps they will turn back [from their faith]."

  • "And give credit only to him who follows your Law."

  • Say: "The [true] guidance is the guidance of God" — [they say this] lest anyone be given the like of what you were given, or lest they dispute with you before your Guardian.

  • Say: "Favor is in the hand of God,

  • He gives it to whom He wills.

  • God is Vast, All-Knowing."

  • He reserves His benevolence for whom He wills.

  • God holds the immense favor.

    وٱلله ذو ٱلفضل ٱلعظيم
  • And among the people of the Scripture, there are some who, if you entrust them with a treasure, will return it to you;

  • and there is one who, if you entrust him with a dinar, does not restore it to you unless you keep pressing him.

  • That is because they say: "We have, toward the people without a prior Scripture, no obligation",

  • and they say falsehood against God, while knowing.

  • But yes, whoever keeps his engagement and guards himself — God loves those who guard themselves.

  • Those who sell the engagement of God and their oaths for a small price — those are the ones who will have no share in the last life; God will not speak to them, will not look at them on the Day of Appearance, and will not purify them.

  • They will have a painful punishment.

  • And among them, there is surely a group who twist their tongues [reciting] the Scripture, so that you might take it for an extract of the Scripture, when it is not part of it,

  • and they say: "This is from God",

  • when it is not from God,

  • and they say falsehood against God, while knowing.

  • It is not for any human to whom God has given the Scripture, the judgment, and the prophecy, to then say to people: "Be obedient to me, besides God"; but rather: "Be spiritual masters, by reason of what you teach of the Scripture and what you study."

  • And he would not order you to take the Agents and the prophets as masters.

  • Would he order you to disown, after you have become true to God alone?

  • 3:81🖼

And remember when God took the solemn engagement of the prophets: "What I have given you of Scripture and wisdom, then a messenger comes to you, confirming what is with you, you must certainly believe in him, and certainly support him."

  • He said: "Have you consented, and taken upon yourselves My burden on this condition?"

  • They said: "We have consented."

  • He said: "Bear witness to it, then, and I am, with you, among the witnesses."

  • Whoever turns away after that, those are the oversteppers.

  • Would they seek then a Law other than God's, while whoever is in the heavens and the earth is true to Him alone, willingly or unwillingly,

  • and to Him they will be returned?

  • Say: "We believe in God, in what has been revealed to us, in what was revealed to Ibrahim, Isma'il, Ishaq, Yaacoub, and the tribes, and in what was given to Moussa, to Issa, and to the prophets, from their Guardian; we make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we are true."

  • And whoever seeks a Law other than being true to God alone, it will never be accepted from him,

  • and he will be, in the last life, among the losers.

  • How would God guide a people who disowned after having believed, and after having testified that the messenger is true, and the clear proofs had come to them?

  • God does not guide the wrongdoing people.

  • Those are the ones whose recompense is that upon them will weigh the curse of God, the Agents, and mankind, all together, wherein they will abide eternally; the punishment will not be lightened for them, and they will not be granted a delay — except those who turn back [to God] after that, and reform: God is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

  • Those who disown after having believed, then increase in disowning, their repentance will never be accepted,

  • and those are the astray.

  • Those who disown and die while disowning, there will never be accepted from any of them the whole earth filled with gold, even were he to offer it as ransom.

  • Those are the ones who will have a painful punishment,

  • and they will have no helpers.

  • You will not attain virtue unless you spend of what you love.

  • And whatever you spend, God knows it perfectly.

  • All food was lawful for the Sons of Israel, except what Israel had forbidden itself, before the Tawrah was sent down.

  • Say: "Bring, then, the Tawrah, and recite it, if you are truthful."

  • Whoever, after that, invents the lie against God — those are the wrongdoers.

  • Say: "God has spoken the truth.

  • Follow, then, the doctrine of Ibrahim, wholly turned toward God,

  • and he was not among those who associate."

  • The first House established for mankind is surely that at the place of the throng, blessed and a guidance for all beings; in it are clear signs.

  • The station of Ibrahim,

  • and whoever enters it is secure.

    ومن دخله كان ءامنا
  • And the Hajj of the House is a duty toward God for mankind, for whoever has the capacity for it by a [practicable] way;

  • and whoever disowns — God is self-sufficient, independent of all beings.

  • Say: "O people of the Scripture! why do you disown the signs of God, when God is witness to what you do?"

  • Say: "O people of the Scripture! why do you turn away from the path of God him who has believed, seeking to make it crooked, while you are witnesses to it?"

  • God is not heedless of what you do.

  • O you who have believed! if you obey a group among those to whom the Scripture was given, they will turn you back, after your faith, to disowning.

  • And how would you disown, when the signs of God are recited to you, and His messenger is among you?

  • And whoever holds firmly to God is already guided to a straight path.

  • O you who have believed! guard yourselves toward God as one should guard oneself toward Him,

  • and do not die except being true to Him alone.

  • And hold, all of you, firmly, to the rope of God,

  • and do not divide yourselves.

    ولا تفرقوا
  • And remember God's blessing upon you, when you were enemies, and He reconciled your cores, so that you became, by His blessing, brothers;

  • and you were at the edge of a pit of fire, and He saved you from it.

  • Thus does God make His signs clear to you, perhaps you will be rightly guided.

  • And let there be from among you a community that calls to good, orders what is recognized, and forbids what is disavowed.

  • Those are the ones who succeed.

  • And do not be like those who divided themselves and fell into disagreement after the clear proofs had come to them.

  • Those are the ones who will have an immense punishment, on the day when faces will brighten and faces will darken.

  • As for those whose faces will have darkened: "Did you disown after your faith? Taste, then, the punishment, for having disowned."

  • And as for those whose faces will have brightened, they will be in the benevolence of God,

  • wherein they will abide eternally.

  • Those are the signs of God, which We recite to you in truth.

  • And God wants no injustice for all beings.

  • And to God belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth,

  • and it is to God that all matters return.

  • You are the best community raised up for mankind: you order what is recognized, you forbid what is disavowed, and you believe in God.

  • And had the people of the Scripture believed, it would have been better for them.

  • Among them, there are believers,

  • but most of them are oversteppers.

  • They can never harm you,

  • except by an annoyance.

    إلآ أذى
  • And if they fight you, they will turn their backs to you;

    وإن يقتلوكم يولوكم ٱلأدبار
  • then, they will not be helped.

  • Humiliation has been imprinted upon them, wherever they are found,

  • except by a bond with God and a bond with mankind; they incur the anger of God,

  • and misery has been imprinted upon them.

  • That is because they used to disown the signs of God, and kill the prophets without right.

  • It is for having disobeyed and crossed the limits.

  • They are not all equal:

  • among the people of the Scripture, there is an upright community, which recites the signs of God in the hours of the night, prostrating.

  • They believe in God and the Last Day, order what is recognized, forbid what is disavowed, and race ahead of others in good deeds.

  • Those are the ones among the righteous.

  • And whatever good they do, it will never be disowned them.

  • God is All-Knowing of those who guard themselves.

  • Indeed, those who disown, neither their goods nor their children will avail them at all against God,

  • and those are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally.

  • The likeness of what they spend in the present life is that of an icy wind, which strikes the crop of a people who have wronged themselves, and annihilates it.

  • And God did not wrong them,

  • but it was themselves that they wronged.

  • O you who have believed! do not take close confidants apart from your own: they never cease to cause you trouble, and would like you to be afflicted.

  • Hatred has already become manifest in their mouths, and what their chests conceal is far graver still.

  • We have already made the signs clear to you, if you reason.

  • Here you are, you who love them, while they do not love you, and you believe in the whole of the Scripture.

  • And when they meet you, they say: "We have believed";

    وإذا لقوكم قالوا ءامنا
  • but when they are alone, they bite their fingertips, out of rage against you.

  • Say: "Die in your rage."

  • God is indeed All-Knowing of what the chests contain.

  • If good touches you, it grieves them,

  • and if evil befalls you, they rejoice at it.

  • But if you are patient and guard yourselves, their scheming will not harm you at all.

  • God encompasses perfectly what they do.

  • And remember when you left your household early, to assign the believers positions for battle.

  • God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

  • When two of your groups almost weakened, God being the protector of both —

  • and it is upon God that the believers should rely.

  • God indeed helped you at Badr, when you were humble.

  • Guard yourselves, then, toward God, perhaps you will be grateful.

  • remember when you said to the believers: "Is it not enough for you that your Guardian reinforces you with three thousand Agents sent down [from the sky]?"

  • But yes: if you are patient and guard yourselves, and they swoop down upon you, right then, your Guardian will reinforce you with five thousand distinctly marked Agents.

  • And God made it only a good tiding for you, and so that your cores might find ease in it.

  • But victory comes only from God, the All-Powerful, the Wise, so that He may cut off a part of those who disown, or lay them low, and they depart disappointed. You have, in this matter, no power: either He turns toward them with clemency, or He punishes them, for they are wrongdoers.

  • And to God belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth.

  • He forgives whom He wills, and He punishes whom He wills.

  • God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

  • O you who have believed! do not devour usury, doubled and redoubled.

  • And guard yourselves toward God, perhaps you will succeed.

  • And guard yourselves against the Fire, prepared for those who disown.

  • And obey God and the messenger, perhaps benevolence will be shown to you.

  • 3:134🖼

And race toward a forgiveness from your Guardian, and a Garden whose extent is that of the heavens and the earth, prepared for those who guard themselves, who spend in ease and hardship, restrain their rage, and efface [the faults] of people.

  • God loves those who do good.

  • And those who, when they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, remember God and ask forgiveness for their offenses —

  • and who forgives offenses, but God? —

  • and who do not persist in what they did, while knowing.

  • Those are the ones whose recompense is a forgiveness from their Guardian, and gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally.

  • How excellent is the reward of those who act [thus]!

    ونعم أجر ٱلعملين
  • Ways [similar] have indeed passed before you;

    قد خلت من قبلكم سنن
  • so travel through the land, and look how the end of those who denied was.

  • This is a clear exposition for mankind, a guidance and an admonition for those who guard themselves.

  • And do not weaken, and do not grieve: you are the most exalted, if you are believers.

  • If a wound touches you, a similar wound has already touched that [other] people.

  • Thus do the days go: We make them alternate among mankind,

  • so that God may know those who have believed, and take from among you witnesses —

  • God does not love the wrongdoers —

  • and so that God may purify those who have believed, and destroy those who disown.

  • Or did you think you would enter the Garden without God yet knowing those among you who have striven, and knowing the patient?

  • You indeed desired death before meeting it; you have now seen it, and you were looking on.

  • Muhammad is only a messenger; messengers have indeed passed before him.

  • If he then died, or was killed, would you turn back on your heels?

  • And whoever turns back on his heels does not harm God at all,

  • and God will recompense the grateful.

  • And it is not for any Self to die, except with the permission of God,

  • according to a register with an appointed term.

    كتبا مؤجلا
  • And whoever wants the requital of the present life, We give it to him;

  • and whoever wants the requital of the last life, We give it to him.

  • We will recompense the grateful.

  • How many a prophet has fought, accompanied by many attached to the Guardian!

  • They did not weaken for what befell them in the way of God, did not grow feeble, and did not submit [to the enemy].

  • God loves the patient.

  • And their only word was to say: "Our Guardian, forgive us our offenses and our excesses in our conduct, make firm our steps, and help us against the people who disown."

  • God then gave them the requital of the present life, and the beautiful requital of the last life.

  • God loves those who do good.

  • O you who have believed! if you obey those who disown, they will make you turn back on your heels, and you will find yourselves losers.

  • God, rather, is your nearest Guarantor,

  • and He is the best of helpers.

  • We will cast terror into the cores of those who disown, for having associated with God that for which He has sent down no authority.

  • Their refuge will be the Fire,

  • and what an evil abode for the wrongdoers!

  • God indeed kept His promise to you, when you were routing them with His permission,

  • until, having weakened, you disagreed about the matter, and disobeyed, after He had shown you what you loved.

  • Among you, there were some who wanted the present life, and among you, there were some who wanted the last life;

  • then He turned you away from them, so as to test you.

  • He has indeed already effaced [the fault] for you.

  • God holds a favor toward the believers.

  • remember when you were climbing [the hill], without turning back to anyone, while the messenger was calling you, at the rear of your ranks; He then rewarded you with anguish upon [another] anguish, so that you would not grieve either for what had escaped you, or for what had befallen you.

  • God is Informed of what you do.

  • Then He sent down upon you, after the anguish, a tranquility, a drowsiness that enveloped a group among you,

  • while [another] group, preoccupied with its own Self, formed about God, contrary to the truth, a conjecture of the age of ignorance,

  • saying: "Do we have, in this matter, any power?"

  • Say: "The matter, entirely, belongs to God."

  • They hide, within themselves, what they do not show you,

  • saying: "Had we had, in this matter, any power, we would not have been killed here."

  • Say: "Had you stayed in your houses, those for whom killing was decreed would certainly have gone forth to their places of falling" — and so that God might test what is in your chests, and purify what is in your cores.

  • And God is All-Knowing of what the chests contain.

  • Those among you who turned their backs, on the day the two forces met, it was only the Diverter who made them stumble, for a part of what they had earned.

  • God has indeed already effaced [the fault] for them.

  • God is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of patience.

  • O you who have believed! do not be like those who disowned, and who say of their brothers, when they travel through the land or go off on an expedition: "Had they stayed with us, they would not have died, and would not have been killed" — so that God may make of it a bitter regret in their cores.

  • God gives life and causes death.

  • God sees perfectly what you do.

  • And if you are killed in the way of God, or if you die, a forgiveness from God and a benevolence are indeed better than what they amass.

  • And whether you die, or are killed, it is to God that you will be gathered.

  • It is by a benevolence from God that you have been gentle toward them;

  • and had you been harsh, hard of core, they would certainly have scattered away from you.

  • So efface [their fault], ask forgiveness for them, and consult them on the matter;

  • and once your decision is made, rely upon God.

  • God loves those who rely [upon Him].

    إن ٱلله يحب ٱلمتوكلين
  • If God helps you, none can overcome you;

  • and if He abandons you, who then could help you after Him?

  • And it is upon God that the believers should rely.

    وعلى ٱلله فليتوكل ٱلمؤمنون
  • It is not for a prophet to commit an embezzlement;

    وما كان لنبي أن يغل
  • and whoever commits an embezzlement will come, on the Day of Appearance, with what he embezzled,

  • then every Self will be fully repaid for what it has earned, without being wronged.

  • Is he who follows the good pleasure of God, then, like him who incurs the anger of God, and whose refuge will be Jahannam?

  • And what an evil destination!

  • They have degrees with God.

  • God sees perfectly what they do.

  • God has indeed blessed the believers, by raising up among them a messenger, from among themselves, who recites His signs to them, purifies them, and teaches them the Scripture and the wisdom, though before they were in manifest error.

  • How then, when misfortune strikes you, after you had inflicted double that, do you say: "From where, then, does this come?"

  • Say: "This comes from yourselves."

  • God is indeed capable of all things.

  • And what befell you, on the day the two forces met, was with God's permission, and so that He might know the believers, and know those who practiced hypocrisy,

  • and so that it might be said to them: "Come, fight in the way of God, or repel [the enemy]";

  • they said: "If we knew how to fight, we would certainly have followed you."

  • That day, they were closer to disowning than to faith,

  • saying with their mouths what was not in their cores.

  • God knows best what they hide.

  • Those who, having stayed seated, said of their brothers: "Had they obeyed us, they would not have been killed."

  • Say: "Ward off death from yourselves, then, if you are truthful."

  • And never think that those who have been killed in the way of God are dead.

  • No, they are alive, with their Guardian, provided [with blessings], rejoicing in what God has given them of His favor, and rejoicing for those who, remaining behind them, have not yet joined them: no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.

  • They rejoice in a blessing from God and a favor, and [in the fact] that God does not let the reward of the believers be lost, those who responded to God and to the messenger after the wound had struck them.

  • To those among them who did good and guarded themselves belongs an immense reward.

  • Those to whom the people said: "The people have gathered against you, so fear them" — that increased their faith.

  • And they said: "God suffices us; what an excellent trustee!"

  • They returned then with a blessing from God and a favor, without any evil having touched them, and they followed the good pleasure of God.

  • God holds an immense favor.

  • It is only that Diverter who frightens his allies; do not fear them, then,

  • but fear Me, if you are believers.

  • And let not those grieve you who hasten into disowning:

  • they will indeed not harm God at all.

  • God wants to give them no share in the last life,

  • and they will have an immense punishment.

  • Those who buy disowning at the price of faith will not harm God at all, and they will have a painful punishment.

  • And let not those who disown by any means think that the delay We grant them is a good for themselves:

  • We grant it to them only so that they may increase in transgression,

  • and they will have a humiliating punishment.

  • It is not for God to leave the believers in the state you are in, without distinguishing the vile from the good,

  • and it is not in God's nature to unveil to you what escapes the senses,

  • but God chooses, among His messengers, whom He wills.

  • So believe in God and in His messengers;

    فامنوا بٱلله ورسله
  • and if you believe and guard yourselves, you will have an immense reward.

  • And let not those who are stingy with what God has given them of His favor by any means think that it is a good for them;

  • it is rather an evil for them.

  • They will be encircled by what they were stingy with, on the Day of Appearance.

  • And to God belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth.

  • God is Informed of what you do.

  • God has indeed heard the saying of those who said: "God is poor, and we are rich."

  • We will record what they said, and their killing of the prophets without right, and We will say: "Taste the punishment of the burning blaze.

  • That is for what your hands have prepared"; and God is not at all unjust toward the constrained [under compulsion].

  • Those who said: "God has bound us not to give credit to any messenger, until he brings us an offering that the fire consumes",

  • say: "Messengers before me indeed came to you with clear proofs, and with what you said; why then did you kill them, if you are truthful?"

  • If they deny you, messengers have already been denied before you, who had come with clear proofs, the Formularies, and the luminous Scripture.

  • Every Self will taste death,

  • and it is only on the Day of Appearance that you will be fully repaid your rewards.

  • Whoever is drawn away from the Fire and admitted into the Garden has thus triumphed.

  • And the present life is nothing but a deceptive enjoyment.

  • You will certainly be tested in your goods and in your Selves, and you will certainly hear, from those to whom the Scripture was given before you, and from those who have associated, much harm.

  • But if you are patient and guard yourselves, that is part of the firmness of resolutions.

  • And remember when God took the solemn engagement of those to whom the Scripture was given: "You will certainly make it clear to mankind, and you will not hide it"; but they cast it behind their backs, and sold it for a small price.

  • How evil is what they buy!

  • Do not by any means think that those who rejoice in what they have done, and love to be praised for what they did not do — do not by any means think that they will escape the punishment.

  • They will have a painful punishment.

  • And to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth.

  • God is capable of all things.

  • There are surely, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, signs for the possessors of intelligence, those who remember God, standing, sitting, or lying on their sides, and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth:

  • "Our Guardian, You did not create this in vain. Glory be to You!

  • Preserve us, then, from the punishment of the Fire.

  • Our Guardian, whoever You admit into the Fire, You have indeed covered him with disgrace,

  • and the wrongdoers have no helpers.

  • Our Guardian, we have heard a herald calling to faith: Believe in your Guardian — and we have believed.

  • Our Guardian, forgive us, then, our offenses, cover for us our evil deeds, and take us back to You with the virtuous.

  • Our Guardian, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers, and do not cover us with disgrace on the Day of Appearance:

  • You never fail Your promise."

  • Their Guardian answered them, then: "I never let the deed of one of you who acts be lost, male or female —

  • you are of one another.

  • Those who have emigrated, been expelled from their dwellings, been persecuted on My way, fought, and been killed, I will certainly cover their evil deeds, and I will certainly admit them into gardens beneath which rivers flow" — a requital from God.

  • And it is with God that the best requital is found.

  • Let not the free movement of those who disown through the land deceive you.

  • It is an enjoyment of little worth,

  • then their refuge will be Jahannam,

  • and what an evil bed!

  • But those who have guarded themselves toward their Guardian will have gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally, as a welcome from God.

  • And what is with God is better for the virtuous.

  • And among the people of the Scripture, there are surely some who believe in God, in what has been revealed to you, and in what was revealed to them, humble toward God,

  • not selling the signs of God for a small price.

  • Those are the ones whose reward is found with their Guardian.

  • God is indeed swift in reckoning.

  • O you who have believed! be patient, surpass [others] in patience, stand ready with firmness, and guard yourselves toward God, perhaps you will succeed.
