Fussilat

Their Skins Will Testify

  • In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Ḥa. Mim.

  • A revealed descent from the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent: a Scripture whose signs are made distinct, a flawless recitation for a people who know, bearing good tidings and warning,

  • yet most of them turn away, so that they do not hear.

  • They say: "Our cores are under coverings against what you call us to, and there is a deafness in our ears, and between us and you a veil. So act — we too are acting [on our side]."

  • Say: "I am only a human like you; it is revealed to me that your deity is a single deity. So stand straight toward Him and ask His forgiveness."

  • Woe to those who associate, who do not give the purifying alms and who disown the last life!

  • Those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have a reward never interrupted.

  • Say: "Do you then disown the One who created the earth in two days, and set up equals to Him?"

  • That is the Guardian of all beings.

  • He placed firmly-set mountains upon it, blessed it, and apportioned its provisions in it, in four equal days, for those who ask.

  • Then He established Himself toward the sky, which was smoke, and said to it and to the earth: "Come, both of you, willingly or unwillingly."

  • They said: "We come obediently."

  • So He completed them as seven skies in two days, and inspired to each sky its command.

  • And We adorned the nearest sky with lamps,

  • and with protection.

  • That is the measure of the All-Powerful, the All-Knowing.

  • If they turn away, say: "I warn you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt of the Recidivists [Aad] and the Depleters [Thamud]", when the messengers came to them, from before them and from behind them: "Obey none but God."

  • They said: "Had our Guardian willed, He would have sent down Agents. So we disown what you have been sent with."

  • As for the Recidivists [Aad], they were arrogant on the earth without right, and said: "Who is stronger than us in might?"

  • Did they not see that God, who created them, is stronger than them in might?

  • And they used to stubbornly reject Our signs.

    وكانوا بايتنا يجحدون
  • So We sent upon them an icy wind, during ill-omened days, to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in the present life;

    فأرسلنا عليهم ريحا صرصرا في أيام نحسات لنذيقهم عذاب ٱلخزي في ٱلحيوة ٱلدنيا
  • and the punishment of the last life is more disgraceful still, and they will not be helped.

  • As for the Depleters [Thamud], We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance, so the thunderbolt of the humiliating punishment seized them for what they used to earn.

  • And We saved those who believed and guarded themselves.

  • The day We gather the enemies of God toward the Fire, they will be arranged in ranks,

  • until, when they reach it, their hearing, their sights, and their skins will testify against them about what they used to do.

  • They will say to their skins: "Why did you testify against us?"

  • They will say: "God, who makes everything speak, made us speak. It is He who created you the first time, and to Him you are returned."

    قالوا أنطقنا ٱلله ٱلذي أنطق كل شىء وهو خلقكم أول مرة وإليه ترجعون
  • You were not hiding [in thinking] that your hearing, your sights, and your skins would not testify against you;

    وما كنتم تستترون أن يشهد عليكم سمعكم ولآ أبصركم ولا جلودكم
  • but you thought that God did not know much of what you were doing.

  • That is the thought you had of your Guardian; it has ruined you, and you have become among the losers.

    وذلكم ظنكم ٱلذي ظننتم بربكم أردىكم فأصبحتم من ٱلخسرين
  • If they endure, the Fire is their dwelling;

    فإن يصبروا فٱلنار مثوى لهم
  • and if they ask to be accepted again, they will not be among those accepted again.

  • And We assigned to them companions who made attractive to them what was before them and what was behind them,

    وقيضنا لهم قرنآء فزينوا لهم ما بين أيديهم وما خلفهم
  • and the word proved true against them, among communities of the Occulted and humans that had already passed away before them;

    وحق عليهم ٱلقول في أمم قد خلت من قبلهم من ٱلجن وٱلإنس
  • they were indeed losers.

  • Those who disown said: "Do not listen to this recitation, and drown it out, so that you may prevail."

  • We will surely make those who disown taste a severe punishment, and We will surely repay them the worst of what they used to do.

    فلنذيقن ٱلذين كفروا عذابا شديدا ولنجزينهم أسوأ ٱلذي كانوا يعملون
  • That is the recompense of the enemies of God: the Fire;

    ذلك جزآء أعدآء ٱلله ٱلنار
  • they have therein the home of eternity,

  • a recompense for their stubbornly rejecting Our signs.

  • Those who disown will say: "Our Guardian, show us those who misled us among the Occulted and humans, that we may put them beneath our feet, so that they may be among the lowest."

  • Those who say: "Our Guardian is God," then stand straight — the Agents descend upon them: "Do not fear and do not grieve; rejoice in the Garden that you were promised."

    إن ٱلذين قالوا ربنا ٱلله ثم ٱستقموا تتنزل عليهم ٱلملئكة ألا تخافوا ولا تحزنوا وأبشروا بٱلجنة ٱلتي كنتم توعدون
  • We are your protectors in the present life and in the last life;

    نحن أوليآؤكم في ٱلحيوة ٱلدنيا وفي ٱلءاخرة
  • and you will have therein whatever your Selves desire, and you will have therein whatever you ask for, as a welcome from One Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

  • And who speaks better than one who calls to God, does what is right, and says: "I am indeed among those true to God alone"?

  • The good deed and the bad deed are not equal.

  • Repel with what is better; then the one between you and whom there was enmity will be like a warm friend.

  • But this is received only by those who endure,

  • and it is received only by one who has an immense share.

    وما يلقىهآ إلا ذو حظ عظيم
  • And if an incitement from the Diverter incites you [to evil], seek refuge in God;

    وإما ينزغنك من ٱلشيطن نزغ فٱستعذ بٱلله
  • it is indeed He, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

  • And among His signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon.

  • Do not prostrate to the sun or to the moon,

  • but prostrate to God, who created them, if it is Him that you obey.

  • If they are arrogant, then those who are with your Guardian glorify Him night and day, without growing weary.

  • And among His signs: you see the earth humble; then, when We send down water upon it, it stirs and swells.

    ومن ءايته أنك ترى ٱلأرض خشعة فإذآ أنزلنا عليها ٱلمآء ٱهتزت وربت
  • He who gave it life is surely the One who gives life to the dead;

    إن ٱلذي أحياها لمحي ٱلموتى
  • He is indeed capable of all things.

  • Those who deviate concerning Our signs are not hidden from Us.

  • Is one who is thrown into the Fire better, or one who comes secure on the Day of Appearance?

  • Do what you wish,

  • He indeed sees perfectly what you do.

  • Those who disown the Reminder when it has come to them [will bear the consequences]; and it is indeed an impregnable Scripture, which falsehood cannot reach from before it or from behind it,

  • a revealed descent from One Wise, Praiseworthy.

    تنزيل من حكيم حميد
  • Nothing is said to you except what was already said to the messengers before you;

    ما يقال لك إلا ما قد قيل للرسل من قبلك
  • your Guardian is surely possessor of forgiveness and possessor of painful sanction.

  • Had We made it a confused recitation, they would have said: "Why were its signs not made distinct?"

  • Confused and flawless at once?

    ءاعجمي وعربي
  • Say: "It is, for those who believe, guidance and healing;

    قل هو للذين ءامنوا هدى وشفآء
  • and those who do not believe have a deafness in their ears, and it is upon them a blindness;

    وٱلذين لا يؤمنون في ءاذانهم وقر وهو عليهم عمى
  • those are called from a distant place."

    أولئك ينادون من مكان بعيد
  • We have indeed given Moussa the Scripture, and there was divergence about it;

    ولقد ءاتينا موسى ٱلكتب فٱختلف فيه
  • and had it not been for a word that preceded from your Guardian, it would already have been settled between them;

    ولولا كلمة سبقت من ربك لقضي بينهم
  • and they are surely, about it, in a troubling doubt.

    وإنهم لفي شك منه مريب
  • Whoever does what is right, it is for his own Self;

    من عمل صلحا فلنفسه
  • and whoever does wrong, it is against his own Self;

    ومن أسآء فعليها
  • and your Guardian is not unjust to the constrained [under compulsion].

    وما ربك بظلم للعبيد
  • To Him is referred the knowledge of the Hour;

    إليه يرد علم ٱلساعة
  • no fruit comes out of its sheath, nor does any female conceive or give birth, except with His knowledge;

    وما تخرج من ثمرت من أكمامها وما تحمل من أنثى ولا تضع إلا بعلمه
  • and the day He calls out to them: "Where are My partners?", they will say: "We inform You that there is not among us any witness."

  • What they used to invoke before will stray away from them, and they will know that they have no escape.

    وضل عنهم ما كانوا يدعون من قبل وظنوا ما لهم من محيص
  • The human being does not tire of calling for good;

    لا يسم ٱلإنسن من دعآء ٱلخير
  • but if evil touches him, he becomes hopeless, disheartened.

  • And if We let him taste benevolence from Us after hardship that touched him, he will surely say: "This is mine by right, and I do not think the Hour is coming; and if I am returned to my Guardian, I will indeed have the best with Him."

  • We will surely inform those who disown of what they did, and We will surely make them taste a harsh punishment.

    فلننبئن ٱلذين كفروا بما عملوا ولنذيقنهم من عذاب غليظ
  • And when We favor the human being with blessings, he turns away and withdraws to his side;

    وإذآ أنعمنا على ٱلإنسن أعرض ونا بجانبه
  • and when evil touches him, he is full of endless calling.

  • Say: "Have you considered? If this is from God and you disown it, who is more astray than one who is in a deep rupture?"

  • We will show them Our signs in the horizons and in themselves, until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth.

  • Is it not enough that your Guardian is witness over all things?

    أولم يكف بربك أنه على كل شىء شهيد
  • Indeed, they are in doubt about the meeting with their Guardian;

    ألآ إنهم في مرية من لقآء ربهم
  • indeed, He encompasses all things.
