Locks Upon the Cores
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Those who disown and turn [people] away from the way of God — He renders their deeds astray.
بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم ٱلذين كفروا وصدوا عن سبيل ٱلله أضل أعملهمAnd those who have believed and done righteous deeds, and believe in what has been sent down to Muhammad — and it is the truth from their Guardian — He covers their bad deeds and sets right their condition.
وٱلذين ءامنوا وعملوا ٱلصلحت وءامنوا بما نزل على محمد وهو ٱلحق من ربهم كفر عنهم سياتهم وأصلح بالهمThat is because those who disown follow falsehood, while those who believe follow the truth from their Guardian.
ذلك بأن ٱلذين كفروا ٱتبعوا ٱلبطل وأن ٱلذين ءامنوا ٱتبعوا ٱلحق من ربهمThus does God multiply for mankind their examples.
كذلك يضرب ٱلله للناس أمثلهمSo when you meet those who disown [the truth in combat], multiply the captives.
فإذا لقيتم ٱلذين كفروا فضرب ٱلرقابThen, when you have subdued them, tighten their bonds firmly,
حتى إذآ أثخنتموهم فشدوا ٱلوثاقthen either grace freely, or exchange of captives, until the war lays down its burdens.
فإما منا بعد وإما فدآء حتى تضع ٱلحرب أوزارهاThat is so. And if God willed, He would have taken vengeance upon them Himself,
ذلك ولو يشآء ٱلله لٱنتصر منهمbut [He does otherwise] so as to test some of you by means of others.
ولكن ليبلوا بعضكم ببعضAnd those who fought in the way of God, He will never render their deeds astray.
وٱلذين قتلوا في سبيل ٱلله فلن يضل أعملهمHe will guide them and set right their condition, and admit them to the Garden which He has made them recognize.
سيهديهم ويصلح بالهم ويدخلهم ٱلجنة عرفها لهمO you who have believed! if you help God, He will help you and make firm your feet.
يأيها ٱلذين ءامنوا إن تنصروا ٱلله ينصركم ويثبت أقدامكمAnd those who disown — ruin be upon them, and He renders their deeds astray.
وٱلذين كفروا فتعسا لهم وأضل أعملهمThat is because they hated what God sent down, so He voided their deeds.
ذلك بأنهم كرهوا مآ أنزل ٱلله فأحبط أعملهمHave they not traveled through the land and looked at what was the end of those before them? God destroyed them,
أفلم يسيروا في ٱلأرض فينظروا كيف كان عقبة ٱلذين من قبلهم دمر ٱلله عليهمand for those who disown is the like thereof.
وللكفرين أمثلهاThat is because God is the nearest Guarantor of those who believe, while those who disown have no nearest guarantor.
ذلك بأن ٱلله مولى ٱلذين ءامنوا وأن ٱلكفرين لا مولى لهمIndeed, God admits those who have believed and done righteous deeds into gardens beneath which rivers flow.
إن ٱلله يدخل ٱلذين ءامنوا وعملوا ٱلصلحت جنت تجري من تحتها ٱلأنهرAnd those who disown enjoy themselves and eat as cattle eat, and the Fire will be their abode.
وٱلذين كفروا يتمتعون ويأكلون كما تأكل ٱلأنعم وٱلنار مثوى لهمAnd how many a city stronger in might than your city which expelled you have We annihilated, and they had no helper.
وكأين من قرية هي أشد قوة من قريتك ٱلتي أخرجتك أهلكنهم فلا ناصر لهمIs he who stands upon clear evidence from his Guardian like one to whom the evil of his deed has been made attractive, and who follow their emotions [overriding reason]?
أفمن كان على بينة من ربه كمن زين له سوء عمله وٱتبعوا أهوآءهمThe example of the Garden promised to those who guard themselves: therein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk whose taste does not change, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey,
مثل ٱلجنة ٱلتي وعد ٱلمتقون فيهآ أنهر من مآء غير ءاسن وأنهر من لبن لم يتغير طعمه وأنهر من خمر لذة للشربين وأنهر من عسل مصفىand therein they have of every fruit, and forgiveness from their Guardian — are they like one who abides eternally in the Fire, given to drink boiling water that tears apart their insides?
ولهم فيها من كل ٱلثمرت ومغفرة من ربهم كمن هو خلد في ٱلنار وسقوا مآء حميما فقطع أمعآءهمAnd among them are those who listen to you, until, when they leave your presence, they say to those given knowledge: "What did he say just now?"
ومنهم من يستمع إليك حتى إذا خرجوا من عندك قالوا للذين أوتوا ٱلعلم ماذا قال ءانفاThose are the ones upon whose cores God has set a seal, and who follow their emotions.
أولئك ٱلذين طبع ٱلله على قلوبهم وٱتبعوا أهوآءهمAnd those who are guided, He increases them in guidance and grants them their guardedness.
وٱلذين ٱهتدوا زادهم هدى وءاتىهم تقوىهمDo they await only the Hour, that it come upon them suddenly? Its signs have already come.
فهل ينظرون إلا ٱلساعة أن تأتيهم بغتة فقد جآء أشراطهاSo how will they benefit, when their reminder comes to them then?
فأنى لهم إذا جآءتهم ذكرىهمSo know that there is no deity but God, and ask forgiveness for your offense and for the believing men and believing women.
فٱعلم أنه لآ إله إلا ٱلله وٱستغفر لذنبك وللمؤمنين وٱلمؤمنتAnd God knows your movements and your resting place.
وٱلله يعلم متقلبكم ومثوىكمAnd those who believe say: "Why has a surah not been sent down?"
ويقول ٱلذين ءامنوا لولا نزلت سورةBut when a decisive surah is sent down and fighting is mentioned therein, you see those in whose core is a sickness looking at you with the look of one overcome by death.
فإذآ أنزلت سورة محكمة وذكر فيها ٱلقتال رأيت ٱلذين في قلوبهم مرض ينظرون إليك نظر ٱلمغشي عليه من ٱلموتCloser for them, then:
فأولى لهمobedience and a recognized saying.
طاعة وقول معروفThen, when the matter is resolved, if only they had been true to God, it would have been better for them.
فإذا عزم ٱلأمر فلو صدقوا ٱلله لكان خيرا لهمMight you, then, if you turned away, spread corruption on earth and fragment your kinship into rival factions?
فهل عسيتم إن توليتم أن تفسدوا في ٱلأرض وتقطعوا أرحامكمThose are the ones God has cursed, so He made them deaf and blinded their sight.
أولئك ٱلذين لعنهم ٱلله فأصمهم وأعمى أبصرهمDo they not then ponder the Recitation, or are there locks upon their cores?
أفلا يتدبرون ٱلقرءان أم على قلوب أقفالهآIndeed, those who turned back after guidance had become clear to them — it is the Diverter who enticed them [with fair appearances],
إن ٱلذين ٱرتدوا على أدبرهم من بعد ما تبين لهم ٱلهدى ٱلشيطن سول لهمand [God] granted them a delay.
وأملى لهمThat is because they have said to those who hate what God has sent down: "We will obey you in part of the matter."
ذلك بأنهم قالوا للذين كرهوا ما نزل ٱلله سنطيعكم في بعض ٱلأمرAnd God knows what they conceal.
وٱلله يعلم إسرارهمHow, then, will it be when the Agents keep them faithfully, multiplying the harvest [of their Self], whether they face them or turn their backs [in flight]?
فكيف إذا توفتهم ٱلملئكة يضربون وجوههم وأدبرهمThat is because they followed what displeased God and hated His good pleasure, so He voided their deeds.
ذلك بأنهم ٱتبعوا مآ أسخط ٱلله وكرهوا رضونه فأحبط أعملهمOr do those in whose cores is a sickness think that God will never bring out their malice?
أم حسب ٱلذين في قلوبهم مرض أن لن يخرج ٱلله أضغنهمAnd if We willed, We could show them to you, and you would recognize them by their mark.
ولو نشآء لأرينكهم فلعرفتهم بسيمهمAnd you will surely recognize them by the tone of their saying.
ولتعرفنهم في لحن ٱلقولAnd God knows your actions.
وٱلله يعلم أعملكمAnd We will surely test you, until We make evident those among you who strive and those who are patient, and We will test your accounts.
ولنبلونكم حتى نعلم ٱلمجهدين منكم وٱلصبرين ونبلوا أخباركمIndeed, those who disown, turn [people] away from the way of God, and set themselves in breach against the messenger after guidance has become clear to them, will not harm God in the least,
إن ٱلذين كفروا وصدوا عن سبيل ٱلله وشآقوا ٱلرسول من بعد ما تبين لهم ٱلهدى لن يضروا ٱلله شياand He will soon void their deeds.
وسيحبط أعملهمO you who have believed! obey God and obey the messenger, and do not render your deeds vain.
يأيها ٱلذين ءامنوا أطيعوا ٱلله وأطيعوا ٱلرسول ولا تبطلوا أعملكمIndeed, those who disown, turn [people] away from the way of God, then die while they disown [the truth still] — God will never forgive them.
إن ٱلذين كفروا وصدوا عن سبيل ٱلله ثم ماتوا وهم كفار فلن يغفر ٱلله لهمSo do not weaken and call for peace, while you are the most exalted, and God is with you,
فلا تهنوا وتدعوا إلى ٱلسلم وأنتم ٱلأعلون وٱلله معكمand He will never deprive you of [the fruit of] your deeds.
ولن يتركم أعملكمThis present life is but play and distraction.
إنما ٱلحيوة ٱلدنيا لعب ولهوAnd if you believe and guard yourselves, He will give you your rewards and will not ask you for your goods.
وإن تؤمنوا وتتقوا يؤتكم أجوركم ولا يسلكم أمولكمIf He were to ask you for it and press you, you would become stingy, and it would bring out your malice.
إن يسلكموها فيحفكم تبخلوا ويخرج أضغنكمThere you are — those called to spend in the way of God — yet among you are some who are stingy,
هأنتم هؤلآء تدعون لتنفقوا في سبيل ٱلله فمنكم من يبخلand whoever is stingy is stingy only against himself.
ومن يبخل فإنما يبخل عن نفسهAnd God is Self-Sufficient,
وٱلله ٱلغنيwhile you are the poor.
وأنتم ٱلفقرآءAnd if you turn away, He will replace you with another people who will not be like you.
وإن تتولوا يستبدل قوما غيركم ثم لا يكونوا أمثلكم
