Yunus

  • In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Ra.i 1
  • These are the signs of the wise Scripture.i 1
  • Is it then a wonder for people that We revealed to a man among them: "Warn mankind," 2
  • and give good news to those who have believed that they have, with their Guardian, a firm standing of truth? 2
  • Those who deny say: "This is indeed a manifest illusion."i 2
  • Your Guardian is God, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then settled upon the Edifice.i 3
  • He governs the Order. 3
  • No intercessor except after His permission. 3
  • That is God, your Guardian. 3
  • So obey Him. 3
  • Will you not then be reminded? 3
  • To Him will be your return, all together. 4
  • It is God's promise, in truth. 4
  • It is He who begins creation, then remakes it, so as to reward with equity those who believed and did righteous deeds.i 4
  • As for those who denied, they will have a scalding drink and a painful punishment, for having denied-disowned. 4
  • It is He who made the sun a brightness and the moon a light, and appointed it stations, so that you might know the count of years and the reckoning.i 5
  • God created that in nothing but truth. 5
  • Thus He details the signs for a people who know. 5
  • In the alternation of night and day, and in what God created in the heavens and the earth, there are indeed signs for a people who guard themselves.i 6
  • Those who do not hope for Our meeting, who were content with the present life and found ease in it, and those who are heedless of Our signs — their refuge will be the Fire, for what they used to earn. 8
  • Those who believed and did righteous deeds, their Guardian guides them by reason of their faith. 9
  • Beneath them rivers will flow, in the Gardens of blessing.i 9
  • Their call there will be: "Glory be to You, O God!" 10
  • And their greeting there will be: "Peace". 10
  • And the end of their call will be: "Praise be to God, Guardian of all beings."i 10
  • If God hastened evil for people as they hasten [the arrival of] good, their term would already have been settled for them. 11
  • So We leave those who do not hope for Our meeting to wander blindly in their tyranny.i 11
  • And when hardship touches the human being, he calls upon Us lying on his side, sitting, or standing; 12
  • then, when We have removed his hardship from him, he goes his way as if he had never called upon Us for a hardship that had touched him. 12
  • Thus were embellished, for the excessive ones, the deeds they used to do. 12
  • We destroyed the generations before you as soon as they committed injustice, even though their messengers had come to them with clear proofs; 13
  • but they were not disposed to believe. 13
  • Thus do We reward the severed people. 13
  • Then We made you successors on the earth, after them, so as to see how you would act. 14
  • And when Our signs are recited to them, wholly explicit, those who do not hope for Our meeting say: "Bring a Recitation other than this one, or change it."i 15
  • Say: "It is not for me to change it of my own accord; 15
  • I only follow what is revealed to me. 15
  • I fear, if I disobeyed my Guardian, the punishment of a tremendous day." 15
  • Say: "Had God willed, I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have made it known to you. 16
  • I dwelt among you a whole lifetime before it, after all. 16
  • Will you not then reason?" 16
  • Who is then more unjust than one who invents a lie against God, or denies His signs? 17
  • The severed do not succeed. 17
  • They obey, besides God, what neither harms nor benefits them, and they say: "These are our intercessors with God." 18
  • Say: "Do you inform God of what He does not know in the heavens or on the earth?" 18
  • Glory be to Him! He is far above what they associate with Him. 18
  • Mankind was but one single community, then they diverged. 19
  • And had it not been for a word that preceded from your Guardian, it would already have been settled between them concerning what they differ over. 19
  • And they say: "Why has no sign been sent down to him from his Guardian?" 20
  • Say: "What escapes the senses belongs exclusively to God.i 20
  • So wait: 20
  • I am, with you, among those who wait." 20
  • And when We let people taste a benevolence after a hardship that had touched them, there they are, scheming against Our signs. 21
  • Say: "God is swifter in scheming." 21
  • Our envoys write down what you scheme. 21
  • It is He who makes you travel on land and sea, 22
  • until, when you are in the ship and it sails with them by a favorable wind, and they rejoice in it, a violent wind comes upon them, the swell comes at them from every side, and they think they are surrounded — then they call upon God, devoting their allegiance to Him alone: "If You save us from this, we will surely be among the grateful."i 22
  • But as soon as He saves them, there they are, transgressing on earth, without right. 23
  • O mankind! your transgression falls back only upon yourselves, 23
  • an enjoyment of the present life; 23
  • then to Us will be your return, and We will inform you of what you used to do. 23
  • The likeness of the present life is that of water which We send down from the sky, and which mingles 24
  • with the vegetation of the earth, from which men and cattle eat, 24
  • until, when the earth has taken on its adornment and become embellished, and its people think they have mastery over it, Our command comes to it, by night or by day, and We make it a mown field, as if it had not flourished the day before. 24
  • Thus do We detail the signs for a people who reflect. 24
  • God calls to the Abode of Peace, and He guides whom He wills to a straight path. 25
  • To those who do good belongs the best reward, and even more; 26
  • neither dark dust nor humiliation will veil their faces. 26
  • Those are the companions of the Garden, 26
  • they will abide therein forever. 26
  • As for those who committed evil deeds, the reward of an evil deed will be its equivalent, and humiliation will cover them; no protector will shield them from God — as if their faces were covered with strips of dark night. 27
  • Those are the companions of the Fire, they will abide therein forever. 27
  • On the day when We gather them all together, then say to those who associated: "Stay in your place, you and your associates" — then We will separate them from one another, 28
  • and their associates will say: "It was not us that you obeyed." 28
  • God suffices as a witness between us and you: we were indeed heedless of your obey. 29
  • There, every Self will experience what it did before,i 30
  • and they will be returned to God, their true Protector, 30
  • and what they used to invent will have forsaken them. 30
  • Say: "Who provides for you from the sky and the earth? 31
  • Or who holds mastery over hearing and sight, who brings forth the living from the dead and brings forth the dead from the living, and who governs the Order?" 31
  • They will say: "God." 31
  • Then say: "Will you not then guard yourselves?" 31
  • That is God, your Guardian, the True. 32
  • After the truth, what is there but error? 32
  • How then can you be turned away? 32
  • Thus was verified the word of your Guardian concerning the oversteppers: they do not believe.i 33
  • Say: "Is there, among your associates, one who begins creation then remakes it?" 34
  • Say: "God begins creation, then remakes it. 34
  • How then can you be turned away from the truth?" 34
  • Say: "Is there, among your associates, one who guides to the truth?" 35
  • Say: "God guides to the truth. 35
  • Is one who guides to the truth more worthy of being followed, or one who does not guide himself unless he is guided? 35
  • What is with you then? How do you judge?" 35
  • Most of them follow nothing but conjecture; 36
  • and conjecture does not avail at all against the truth. 36
  • God knows well what they do. 36
  • This Recitation was not something that could have been invented apart from God; 37
  • rather, it confirms what precedes it, and it details the Code — with no doubt possible — from the Guardian of all beings.i 37
  • Will they say: "He invented it"? 38
  • Say: "Bring then a sourate like it, 38
  • and call upon whomever you can, apart from God, if you are truthful." 38
  • In reality, they denied what they did not encompass in knowledge, and whose interpretation had not yet come to them.i 39
  • Thus did those before them deny. 39
  • So look how the end of the unjust was. 39
  • Among them are some who believe in it, and some who do not believe in it; 40
  • your Guardian knows best the corrupters. 40
  • And if they deny you, say: "To me my deed, and to you your deed; you are innocent of what I do, and I am innocent of what you do." 41
  • Among them are some who listen to you — 42
  • but will you make the deaf hear, even though they do not reason? 42
  • And among them are some who look at you — 43
  • but will you guide the blind, even though they do not see? 43
  • God does no wrong to people, in anything; 44
  • it is people who wrong themselves. 44
  • On the day He gathers them, as if they had remained but an hour of the day, they will recognize one another. 45
  • They are indeed losers, those who denied the meeting with God, and they were not rightly guided. 45
  • Whether We show you part of what We promise them, or We take you back to Us, to Us will be their return; 46
  • God is thereafter a witness over what they do. 46
  • To every community, a messenger. 47
  • And when their messenger came, it was settled between them with equity, and they were not wronged. 47
  • And they say: "When will this promise be, if you are truthful?" 48
  • Say: "I hold, for myself, neither harm nor benefit, except what God wills. 49
  • To every community a term. 49
  • When their term arrives, they cannot delay it by an hour, 49
  • nor advance it." 49
  • Say: "What do you think? If His punishment came upon you by night or by day, what is it the severed would want to hasten? 50
  • Is it then only once it has happened that you will believe in it? 51
  • Now?! when you used to seek to hasten it! 51
  • Then it will be said to those who did wrong: "Taste the punishment of eternity; 52
  • are you rewarded except for what you used to earn?" 52
  • They ask you: "Is it truly so?" 53
  • Say: "Yes, by my Guardian! It is truly so, and you cannot thwart it." 53
  • And if every unjust Self possessed all that is on earth, it would ransom itself with it. 54
  • And they will conceal their regret upon seeing the punishment, and it will be settled between them with equity, and they will not be wronged. 54
  • Is it not so: to God belongs what is in the heavens and on the earth. 55
  • Is it not so: God's promise is true; 55
  • but most of them do not know. 55
  • It is He who gives life and causes death, 56
  • and to Him you will be returned. 56
  • O mankind! an admonition has come to you from your Guardian, a healing for what is in the chests, a guidance and a benevolence for the believers.i 57
  • Say: "It is by God's favor and by His benevolence — let them rejoice in that! 58
  • That is better than what they amass." 58
  • Say: "What do you think? Of what God sent down for you as provision, you made some of it forbidden and some lawful — 59
  • say: Is it God who permitted you, or is it against God that you invent?" 59
  • What will they think, on the Day of Appearance, those who invent the lie against God?i 60
  • God is indeed full of favor toward mankind, 60
  • but most of them are not grateful. 60
  • You are not in any situation, nor do you recite any Recitation from it, nor do you do any deed, without Our being witnesses over you when you engage in it. 61
  • Nothing escapes your Guardian, even the weight of a grain on earth or in the sky, 61
  • nothing smaller or greater that is not in a clear register.i 61
  • Is it not so: the allies of God have nothing to fear, and they will not grieve, 62
  • those who believed and used to guard themselves. 63
  • To them the good news, in the present life and in the last life. 64
  • No change to God's words. 64
  • That is the immense triumph. 64
  • Let not their speech grieve you: 65
  • power belongs to God in its entirety. 65
  • He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. 65
  • Is it not so: to God belongs whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth; 66
  • what then do those who invoke, besides God, associates, follow? 66
  • They follow nothing but conjecture, 66
  • and they do nothing but engage in baseless guesswork. 66
  • It is He who made for you the night so that you might rest in it, and the day for seeing clearly. 67
  • There are indeed signs in that for a people who listen. 67
  • They say: "God has taken a child." 68
  • Glory be to Him! 68
  • He is self-sufficient. 68
  • To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth. 68
  • You have no authority for this. 68
  • Will you say about God what you do not know? 68
  • Say: "Those who invent the lie against God do not succeed." 69
  • An enjoyment in the present life, 70
  • then to Us will be their return; then We will make them taste the severe punishment, for having denied-disowned. 70
  • Recite to them the information concerning Nuh, when he said to his people: "O my people! if my standing among you and my reminder of God's signs weigh upon you, it is upon God that I rely.i 71
  • So gather your resolve and your associates, 71
  • let your resolve no longer be, for you, a confused matter, 71
  • then carry it out against me, and grant me no respite." 71
  • If you turn away, I have not asked you for any wage; 72
  • my wage is due only from God, 72
  • and I have been commanded to be among those true to God alone.i 72
  • But they denied him; We saved him, and those with him in the ship, and We made them successors, 73
  • and We drowned those who had denied Our signs. 73
  • So look how the end of those who had been warned turned out. 73
  • Then, after him, We sent messengers to their respective peoples; they brought them clear proofs, but they were not disposed to believe what they had first denied. 74
  • Thus do We seal the cores of the transgressors.i 74
  • Then, after them, We sent Moussa and Harun to Fir'awn and his court, with Our signs; but they were arrogant and were a severed people.i 75
  • When the truth came to them from Us, they said: "This is indeed a manifest illusion." 76
  • Moussa said: "Do you say this of the truth, once it has come to you?i 77
  • Is this illusion? 77
  • But illusion-makers do not succeed." 77
  • They said: "Have you come to us to turn us away from what we found our ancestors upon, and so that greatness, on earth, would belong to you both? We will not believe in you two."i 78
  • Fir'awn said: "Bring me every knowledgeable illusion-maker."i 79
  • When the illusion-makers came, Moussa said to them: "Throw what you have to throw."i 80
  • When they had thrown, Moussa said: "What you have brought is illusion;i 81
  • God will nullify it. 81
  • God does not make the work of corrupters prosper." 81
  • And God establishes the truth by His words, however much the severed detest it. 82
  • None believed in Moussa except a lineage of his people, in fear of Fir'awn and their court, lest he oppress them.i 83
  • Fir'awn was indeed highly placed on earth,i 83
  • and he was indeed among the excessive ones. 83
  • Moussa said: "O my people, if you believe in God, rely upon Him, if you are true to God alone."i 84
  • They said: "It is upon God that we rely. 85
  • Our Guardian, do not make us a trial for the unjust people, 85
  • and save us, by Your benevolence, from the people who deny-disown." 86
  • We revealed to Moussa and his brother: "Establish houses for your people in Egypt; make your houses an anchor point; and maintain the Contact."i 87
  • And give good news to the believers. 87
  • Moussa said: "Our Guardian, You have given Fir'awn and his court adornment and riches in the present life,i 88
  • our Guardian, so that they may lead astray from Your path. 88
  • Our Guardian, obliterate their riches and harden their cores, so that they do not believe until they see the painful punishment." 88
  • He said: "Your invocation is answered; so stand you both firm, 89
  • and do not follow the path of those who do not know." 89
  • We made the Children of Israel cross the sea; Fir'awn and his armies pursued them in transgression and hostility,i 90
  • until, when the drowning overtook him, he said: "I believe that there is no deity but He in whom the Children of Israel have believed, and I am among those true to God alone." 90
  • "Now?! when you disobeyed before, and were among the corrupters! 91
  • Today, then, We save you as to your body, so that you may be a sign for those who come after you." 92
  • But many people are indeed heedless of Our signs. 92
  • We settled the Children of Israel in a true dwelling, and We provided them with good things as sustenance; they did not diverge until the knowledge had come to them. 93
  • Your Guardian will settle between them, on the Day of Appearance, concerning what they used to differ over. 93
  • If you are in doubt about what We have sent down to you, ask those who read the Scripture before you.i 94
  • The truth has certainly come to you from your Guardian; 94
  • so do not be among those who doubt. 94
  • And do not be among those who denied the signs of God, you would then be among the losers. 95
  • Those on whom the word of your Guardian has been verified will not believe, even if every sign came to them, until they see the painful punishment. 97
  • Was there ever a city that believed and whose faith benefited it — except the people of Younes! When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in the present life, and We granted them enjoyment until a term.i 98
  • Had your Guardian willed, all those on earth would have believed, all of them together. 99
  • Is it you who would compel people to become believers? 99
  • It is not for any Self to believe except with God's permission, 100
  • and He places defilement upon those who do not reason. 100
  • Say: "Look at what is in the heavens and the earth" — but of what avail are signs and warnings to a people who do not believe? 101
  • What then do they await, but the like of the days of those who came before them? 102
  • Say: "Wait then, I am, with you, among those who wait." 102
  • Then We save Our messengers, and those who believed — thus; 103
  • it is a duty upon Us to save the believers. 103
  • Say: "O mankind! if you are in doubt about my Law, I do not obey those you obey besides God,i 104
  • but I obey God, who will recall you to Him. 104
  • And I have been commanded to be among the believers, 104
  • and: "Set your direction toward the Law, wholly turned toward God,i 105
  • and do not be among those who associate." 105
  • Do not invoke, besides God, what neither benefits nor harms you; 106
  • if you did so, you would then be among the unjust. 106
  • If God touches you with harm, none can remove it but Him; 107
  • and if He wills good for you, none can repel His favor. 107
  • He grants it to whom He wills among His obedient ones. 107
  • He is the Most-Forgiving, the Benevolent.i 107
  • Say: "O mankind! the truth has come to you from your Guardian; 108
  • whoever is guided is guided only for himself, 108
  • and whoever strays only strays to his own detriment. 108
  • And I am not, for you, a trustee-agent."i 108
  • Follow what is revealed to you, and be patient until God judges. 109
  • He is the best of judges. 109
