  • In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Ra.i 1
  • A Scripture whose signs have been made firm, then made explicit, from a Wise, Informed One: "Obey none but God; I am for you, from Him, a warner and a bearer of glad tidings; ask forgiveness of your Guardian, then turn back to Him: He will let you enjoy a fine enjoyment until an appointed term, and grant every possessor of merit his merit.i 3
  • But if you turn away, I fear for you the punishment of an immense day." 3
  • To God is your return, 4
  • and He has power over everything. 4
  • Is it not that they fold their chests to hide from Him?i 5
  • Is it not that, when they cover themselves with their garments, He knows what they keep secret and what they disclose? 5
  • He knows the contents of the chests. 5
  • There is no living creature on earth whose provision does not fall to God; He knows its abode and its resting-place:i 6
  • everything is in a clear register.i 6
  • And it is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days, while His Edifice was founded upon the water [as primary matter], so as to test you: which of you acts best.i 7
  • And if you say: "You will be raised after death," those who deny will surely say: "This is nothing but a manifest illusion."i 7
  • And if We delay for them the punishment until a counted term, they will surely say: "What holds it back?" 8
  • Is it not that, the day it comes to them, it will not be turned away from them, 8
  • and what they used to mock will surround them. 8
  • And if We let the human being taste a benevolence from Us, then withdraw it from him, he becomes indeed despairing, a great denier.i 9
  • And if We let him taste a blessing after adversity has touched him, he will surely say: "The ills have departed from me": 10
  • he becomes joyful, full of vanity. 10
  • Except those who were patient and did righteous deeds: those will have forgiveness and a great reward. 11
  • It may be that you will leave out part of what is revealed to you, and that your chest will tighten because of it, since they say: "Why has a treasure not been sent down upon him, or why does an Agent not come with him!"i 12
  • You are, yourself, only a warner; 12
  • and God is, over everything, an agent.i 12
  • Or will they say: "He has invented it"? 13
  • Say: "Then bring ten invented sûrahs resembling it, and call upon whomever you can, besides God, if you are truthful." 13
  • If they do not answer you, then know that it has been sent down only with God's knowledge, and that there is no deity but Him. 14
  • Will you then be true to God alone?i 14
  • Whoever wants the present life and its adornment, We pay him in full for his deeds therein, and he will not be wronged in it: 15
  • those are the ones who will have, in the last life, nothing but the Fire; 16
  • what they fabricated therein will have collapsed, 16
  • and what they did will be null and void. 16
  • Is he who relies on a clear proof from his Guardian, followed by a witness from Him, [like those others]? 17
  • And before him, the Scripture of Moussa, as a reference and a benevolence.i 17
  • Those are the ones who believe in it. 17
  • And whoever, among the factions, denies it, the Fire is his appointment:i 17
  • So do not be in doubt about it: 17
  • it is the truth from your Guardian, but most people do not believe. 17
  • And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against God? 18
  • Those are the ones who will be presented before their Guardian, and the witnesses will say: "These are the ones who lied against their Guardian!" 18
  • Is it not that God's curse falls upon the unjust, those who turn away from God's path and seek to make it crooked, and who deny the last life? 19
  • Those are the ones who, on earth, will not be able to thwart [Him], and who will have, besides God, no protector: 20
  • the punishment will be doubled for them.i 20
  • They could neither hear, nor see. 20
  • Those are the ones who have lost themselves, and what they invented has strayed away from them. 21
  • There is no doubt that, in the last life, they are the greatest losers. 22
  • Those who believe, do righteous deeds, and find peace before their Guardian: those are the companions of the Garden, 23
  • wherein they will remain. 23
  • The example of the two groups is like the blind and the deaf, and the seeing and the hearing:i 24
  • are they equal in example? 24
  • Will you not then remember? 24
  • We have indeed sent Nuh to his people:i 25
  • "I am for you a clear warner: 25
  • obey none but God; 26
  • I fear for you the punishment of a painful day." 26
  • The court of those who denied, among his people, said: "We see you only as a human being like us, and we see that only those who are, among us, the most abject, followed you, at first glance.i 27
  • And we see in you no merit over us; we rather think you liars." 27
  • He said: "O my people, do you see? If I rely on a clear proof from my Guardian, and He has granted me a benevolence from Him, which has remained hidden from you, shall We impose it upon you while you detest it? 28
  • O my people, I do not ask you for any wealth for this: 29
  • my reward is incumbent only upon God. 29
  • And I am not of those who drive away those who believe: they will surely meet their Guardian; 29
  • but I see you a people given to ignorance. 29
  • O my people, who would help me against God, if I drove them away? 30
  • Will you not then remember? 30
  • And I do not tell you that I hold God's treasures, nor that I know what escapes the senses, nor that I am an Agent;i 31
  • and I do not say, of those your eyes hold in contempt, that God will grant them no good: 31
  • God knows best what is in their souls. 31
  • I would then be among the unjust." 31
  • They said: "O Nuh, you have indeed disputed with us, and multiplied the dispute; bring us then what you threaten us with, if you are among the truthful."i 32
  • He said: "It is God alone who will bring it to you, if He wills, and you will not be able to thwart anything. 33
  • And my counsel will be of no use to you, even were I to wish to counsel you, if God wills to lead you astray:i 34
  • He is your Guardian, 34
  • and to Him you will be returned." 34
  • Or will they say: "He has invented it"? 35
  • Say: "If I have invented it, then my own severance falls upon me, and I am innocent of your severance." 35
  • And it was revealed to Nuh that none of your people will believe anymore, except those who have already believed:i 36
  • so do not grieve over what they were doing. 36
  • And build the vessel, under Our eyes and by Our revelation, 37
  • and do not speak to Me about those who have been unjust: they will be drowned. 37
  • He was building the vessel; and every time a court of his people passed by him, it mocked him.i 38
  • He said: "If you mock us, we will mock you as you mock." 38
  • You will soon know upon whom a punishment comes that covers him with shame, and upon whom a lasting punishment falls. 39
  • Until, when Our command came and the oven began to boil over, We said: "Load into it, of every kind, two elements of a pair, and your family, except him against whom the word has already been pronounced, and those who have believed."i 40
  • And only a few had believed with him. 40
  • And he said: "Embark therein: in the name of God be its course and its mooring. 41
  • My Guardian is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence." 41
  • And it sailed with them amid waves like mountains. 42
  • And Nuh called his son, who stood apart: "O my little one, embark with us, and do not be with those who deny."i 42
  • He said: "I shall take refuge on a mountain, which will preserve me from the water." 43
  • He said: "None is preserved today from God's command, except him to whom He shows benevolence." 43
  • And the wave came between them, and he was among the drowned. 43
  • And it was said: "O earth, swallow your water! O sky, hold back!" 44
  • And the water subsided, the command was fulfilled, and [the vessel] settled on al-Judi. 44
  • And it was said: "Let the unjust people become nothing but a distant memory!"i 44
  • And Nuh called upon his Guardian and said: "My Guardian, my son is of my family, and Your promise is truth,i 45
  • and You are the most just of judges." 45
  • He said: "O Nuh, he is not of your family:i 46
  • it is an unrighteous deed. 46
  • So do not ask Me about what you have no knowledge of: 46
  • I exhort you not to be among the ignorant." 46
  • He said: "My Guardian, I take refuge with You from asking You about what I have no knowledge of, 47
  • and if You do not forgive me and show me benevolence, I will be among the losers." 47
  • It was said: "O Nuh, descend with a peace from Us, and blessings upon you and upon communities from those who are with you;i 48
  • and there are communities that We shall let enjoy [life], then a painful punishment from Us will touch them." 48
  • Those are pieces of information about what escapes the senses, which We reveal to you:i 49
  • you did not know them, neither you nor your people, before this. 49
  • So be patient: 49
  • the favorable outcome belongs to those who guard themselves. 49
  • And to the Recidivists [Aad], their brother Hud:i 50
  • he said: "O my people, obey God: you have no deity but Him; 50
  • you are only inventors [of falsehood]." 50
  • O my people, I do not ask you for any reward for this: 51
  • my reward is incumbent only upon Him who created me. 51
  • Will you not then reason? 51
  • O my people, ask forgiveness of your Guardian, then turn back to Him: He will send upon you the sky abundantly, and add strength to your strength; and do not turn away as severed." 52
  • They said: "O Hud, you have not brought us a clear proof, and we will not abandon our gods on your word, and we do not believe you.i 53
  • We only say that one of our gods has struck you with evil." 54
  • He said: "I call God to witness, 54
  • And bear witness that I am innocent of what you associate besides Him: 55
  • so scheme against me all together, and give me no respite. 55
  • I place my trust in God, my Guardian and yours:i 56
  • there is no living creature that He does not hold by the forelock.i 56
  • My Guardian is indeed upon a straight path. 56
  • If you turn away, I have conveyed to you that with which I was sent to you; 57
  • and my Guardian will substitute in your place another people, without your harming Him in anything: 57
  • my Guardian watches over everything." 57
  • And when Our command came, We saved Hud and those who had believed with him, by a benevolence from Us, and We saved them from a harsh punishment.i 58
  • And such was Aad: they denied the signs of their Guardian, disobeyed His envoys, and followed the command of every stubborn tyrant.i 59
  • And they were pursued, in the present life, by a curse, and on the Day of Appearance too:i 60
  • Is it not that Aad denied their Guardian?i 60
  • Let Aad, the people of Hud, become nothing but a distant memory!i 60
  • And to the Depleters [Thamud], their brother Salih:i 61
  • he said: "O my people, obey God: you have no deity but Him. 61
  • It is He who brought you forth from the earth and settled you therein to dwell long: so ask His forgiveness, then turn back to Him:i 61
  • my Guardian is near, responsive." 61
  • They said: "O Salih, you were among us a hope before this; do you forbid us to obey what our ancestors obeyed? We are indeed in a troubling doubt about what you call us to."i 62
  • He said: "O my people, do you see? If I rely on a clear proof from my Guardian, and He has granted me, from Him, a benevolence, who then would help me against God if I disobeyed Him? 63
  • You would then only increase my ruin. 63
  • O my people, this is the she-camel of God, a sign for you: 64
  • so let her eat on God's earth, 64
  • and do her no harm, or a near punishment will seize you." 64
  • But they hamstrung her. He then said: "Enjoy yourselves in your dwelling for three days: 65
  • that is a promise that will not be belied." 65
  • When Our command came, We saved Salih and those who had believed with him, by a benevolence from Us, and from the humiliation of that day.i 66
  • Your Guardian is indeed the Strong, the All-Mighty. 66
  • And the Cry seized those who had been unjust, so that they became, in their dwellings, prostrate, as if they had never dwelt there.i 68
  • Is it not that Thamud denied their Guardian?i 68
  • Let Thamud become nothing but a distant memory! 68
  • And Our envoys indeed came to Ibrahim with the glad tidings: they said: "Peace!"i 69
  • He said: "Peace!" 69
  • and he did not delay in bringing a roasted calf. 69
  • But when he saw that their hands did not reach it, he found them strange and felt fear of them.i 70
  • They said: "Do not fear: 70
  • we are sent to the people of Lut."i 70
  • And his wife, standing, began to laugh; 71
  • We then gave her the glad tidings of Ishaq,i 71
  • and, after Ishaq, Yaacoub.i 71
  • She said: "Woe is me! Shall I bear a child, when I am old, and here is my husband, an old man? 72
  • That is indeed an astonishing thing!" 72
  • They said: "Do you marvel at God's command? 73
  • God's benevolence and His blessings be upon you, people of the house! 73
  • He is praiseworthy, full of glory." 73
  • When the fright had left Ibrahim and the glad tidings had come to him, he began to argue with Us about the people of Lut:i 74
  • Ibrahim is indeed thoughtful, full of [repentant] sighs, ever turning back [to God].i 75
  • "O Ibrahim, turn away from this:i 76
  • the command of your Guardian has already come, 76
  • and an irrevocable punishment surely comes to them." 76
  • And when Our envoys came to Lut, he was distressed by it, and felt helpless about them, and said: "This is a hard day."i 77
  • And his people came to him, rushing, though they had previously been committing evil deeds. 78
  • He said: "O my people, here are my daughters: they are purer for you; so guard yourselves before God, and do not humiliate me concerning my guests:i 78
  • is there not among you a reasonable man?"i 78
  • They said: "You already know what right we have over your daughters, and you well know, [right now], what we want."i 79
  • He said: "Would that I had some strength against you, or could take refuge in a strong support!" 80
  • They said: "O Lut, we are the envoys of your Guardian: they will never reach you.i 81
  • So depart with your family, at a time of the night, and let none of you turn around, except your wife.i 81
  • What befalls them will also befall her. 81
  • Their appointment is the morning: 81
  • is the morning not near?" 81
  • When Our command came, We made the top [of their city] its bottom, and rained upon it stones of hardened clay, layered, marked with your Guardian:i 83
  • and it is not far from the unjust. 83
  • And to Madyan, their brother Shu'ayb:i 84
  • he said: "O my people, obey God: you have no deity but Him, 84
  • and do not diminish the measure nor the weight. 84
  • I see you in prosperity, and I fear for you the punishment of a day that encompasses everything. 84
  • O my people, give full measure and full weight, with equity, 85
  • and do not wrong the people in their possessions, and do not spread corruption on the earth as corrupters. 85
  • What remains [licitly] with God is better for you, if you are believers;i 86
  • and I am not, over you, a guardian. 86
  • They said: "O Shu'ayb, does your Contact command you that we abandon what our ancestors obeyed, or that we stop doing with our wealth what we wish?i 87
  • You are indeed, yourself, the thoughtful, the reasonable one!"i 87
  • He said: "O my people, do you see? If I rely on a clear proof from my Guardian, and He has provided me, from Him, with a fine provision... 88
  • And I do not want to contradict you by doing myself what I turn you away from: 88
  • I only want reform, as much as I can; 88
  • and my success rests only with God: 88
  • in Him I place my trust, 88
  • and to Him I return. 88
  • O my people, let not my opposition draw upon you what befell the people of Nuh, or the people of Hud, or the people of Salih;i 89
  • and the people of Lut are not far from you.i 89
  • Ask forgiveness of your Guardian, then turn back to Him: 90
  • my Guardian is full of benevolence, full of affection.i 90
  • They said: "O Shu'ayb, we do not understand much of what you say, and we indeed see you weak among us; were it not for your clan, we would have banished you; and you have no power over us."i 91
  • He said: "O my people, does my clan then weigh more with you than God, whom you have relegated behind your back? 92
  • My Guardian indeed encompasses what you do. 92
  • O my people, act according to your position; I, [too], act: 93
  • you will soon know upon whom a punishment falls that covers him with shame, and who is a liar. 93
  • So watch: 93
  • I watch with you." 93
  • And when Our command came, We saved Shu'ayb and those who had believed with him, by a benevolence from Us. 94
  • And the Cry seized those who had been unjust, so that they became, in their dwellings, prostrate, as if they had never dwelt there. 95
  • Let Madyan become nothing but a distant memory, as Thamud did! 95
  • We have indeed sent Moussa with Our signs and manifest authority, to Fir'awn and his court; but they followed the command of Fir'awn,i 97
  • and the command of Fir'awn was not reasonable.i 97
  • He will precede his people on the Day of Appearance, and bring them to arrive at the Fire:i 98
  • what a detestable place of arrival to arrive at!i 98
  • And they were pursued, here, by a curse, and on the Day of Appearance too:i 99
  • what a detestable gift is that which was given to them!i 99
  • Those are pieces of information about the cities which We relate to you: some of them remain standing, and others are mown down. 100
  • And We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves: 101
  • their deities, which they invoked besides God, availed them nothing when your Guardian's command came, 101
  • and they only increased their ruin. 101
  • Such is the seizure of your Guardian, when He seizes the cities while they are unjust: 102
  • His seizure is indeed painful, severe. 102
  • There is indeed in that a sign for whoever fears the punishment of the last life: 103
  • that is a day on which the people will be gathered, 103
  • and that is a witnessed day. 103
  • And We defer it only until a counted term. 104
  • The day it comes, no soul will speak without His permission: 105
  • there will then be the wretched and the happy. 105
  • As for those who will be wretched, they will be in the Fire, wherein they will have moaning and sobbing, wherein they will remain as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Guardian wills: 107
  • your Guardian indeed does what He wills. 107
  • And as for those who will be happy, they will be in the Garden, wherein they will remain as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Guardian wills: 108
  • a gift that will never be cut off. 108
  • So do not be in doubt about what those people obey: 109
  • they obey only as their ancestors obeyed before. 109
  • And We shall surely give them their share, without any deduction. 109
  • We have indeed given Moussa the Scripture, and there was divergence about it;i 110
  • and were it not for a word already pronounced by your Guardian, it would have been decided between them; 110
  • and they are indeed, about it, in a troubling doubt. 110
  • And to each, your Guardian will surely pay in full for their deeds: 111
  • He is, of what they do, Informed. 111
  • So stand firm, as you have been commanded, and those who have turned back [to God] with you, and do not overstep the bounds:i 112
  • He is, of what you do, Seeing. 112
  • And do not lean upon those who have been unjust, or the Fire would touch you, 113
  • and you would have, besides God, no protector, 113
  • then you would not be helped. 113
  • And perform the Contact at the two ends of the day, and at close moments of the night:i 114
  • good deeds indeed dispel bad ones: 114
  • that is a reminder for those who remember. 114
  • And be patient: 115
  • God does not let go to waste the reward of those who excel [in good]. 115
  • Were there not, among the generations before you, possessors of a remnant [of virtue] who forbade corruption on earth, except a few among those We saved?i 116
  • And those who were unjust followed what they were indulged in, and became severed. 116
  • And your Guardian was not one to destroy the cities unjustly, while their inhabitants were reforming. 117
  • And had your Guardian willed, He would have made the people a single community; 118
  • but they do not cease to differ, except those to whom your Guardian shows benevolence, 119
  • and it is for this that He created them. 119
  • And the word of your Guardian shall be fulfilled: "I will surely fill Jahannam with the Occulted and humans, all together."i 119
  • And all that We relate to you, among the pieces of information about the envoys, is that by which We make your Conscience firm;i 120
  • and there has come to you, in this, the truth, an exhortation, and a reminder for the believers. 120
  • And say to those who do not believe: "Act according to your position; we, [too], act; and wait: we too are waiting." 122
  • And to God belongs what escapes the senses in the heavens and on the earth,i 123
  • and to Him the whole matter returns: 123
  • so obey Him, and place your trust in Him: 123
  • your Guardian is not at all heedless of what you do. 123
