سورة 15
۞
Al-Hijr
-
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Ra.i 1
بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم الر -
These are the signs of the Scripture, and of a clear Recitation.i 1
تلك ءايت ٱلكتب وقرءان مبين -
It may often be that those who deny wish they had been true to God alone.i 2
ربما يود ٱلذين كفروا لو كانوا مسلمين -
Leave them to eat, enjoy themselves, and let hope distract them: 3
ذرهم يأكلوا ويتمتعوا ويلههم ٱلأمل -
they will soon know. 3
فسوف يعلمون -
without it having had, concerning it, a known register.i 4
ومآ أهلكنا من قرية إلا ولها كتاب معلوم -
No community precedes its term, nor delays it.i 5
ما تسبق من أمة أجلها وما يستخرون -
And they said: "O you upon whom the Reminder has been sent down, you are indeed deranged! Why do you not bring us the Agents, if you are among the truthful?"i 7
وقالوا يأيها ٱلذي نزل عليه ٱلذكر إنك لمجنون لو ما تأتينا بٱلملئكة إن كنت من ٱلصدقين -
We do not send down the Agents except with truth,i 8
ما ننزل ٱلملئكة إلا بٱلحق -
and then, they would be granted no reprieve. 8
وما كانوا إذا منظرين -
It is indeed We who have sent down the Reminder,i 9
إنا نحن نزلنا ٱلذكر -
and it is We who are indeed its preservers. 9
وإنا له لحفظون -
We have indeed sent, before you, [messengers] among the factions of the ancients,i 10
ولقد أرسلنا من قبلك في شيع ٱلأولين -
and no messenger came to them without their mocking him. 11
وما يأتيهم من رسول إلا كانوا به يستهزءون -
Thus We insinuate it into the Cores of the severed: they do not believe in it, though the precedent of the ancients has already come to pass.i 13
كذلك نسلكه في قلوب ٱلمجرمين لا يؤمنون به وقد خلت سنة ٱلأولين -
And even if We opened for them a gate of the sky, through which they kept ascending, they would say: "Our sight is only obnubilated; we are rather a people abused by illusion."i 15
ولو فتحنا عليهم بابا من ٱلسمآء فظلوا فيه يعرجون لقالوا إنما سكرت أبصرنا بل نحن قوم مسحورون -
We have indeed placed in the sky constellations, and adorned them for those who look, and preserved them from every banished Diverter — except one who steals a furtive hearing, and is then pursued by a clear, blazing projectile.i 18
ولقد جعلنا في ٱلسمآء بروجا وزينها للنظرين وحفظنها من كل شيطن رجيم إلا من ٱسترق ٱلسمع فأتبعه شهاب مبين -
And the earth, We spread it out, and cast upon it firmly-anchored mountains, and caused to grow upon it everything in due measure, and We gave you therein means of livelihood,i 20
وٱلأرض مددنها وألقينا فيها روسي وأنبتنا فيها من كل شىء موزون وجعلنا لكم فيها معيش -
as well as to those you do not provide for. 20
ومن لستم له برزقين -
There is nothing whose treasures We do not hold, 21
وإن من شىء إلا عندنا خزآئنه -
and We send it down only according to a known measure. 21
وما ننزله إلا بقدر معلوم -
And We sent the fecundating winds, and then sent down from the sky a water with which We gave you drink, and which you do not hold in reserve.i 22
وأرسلنا ٱلريح لوقح فأنزلنا من ٱلسمآء مآء فأسقينكموه ومآ أنتم له بخزنين -
And it is indeed We who give life and give death, and it is We who are the heirs. 23
وإنا لنحن نحي ونميت ونحن ٱلورثون -
We indeed know those among you who go first, and We indeed know those who lag behind.i 24
ولقد علمنا ٱلمستقدمين منكم ولقد علمنا ٱلمستخرين -
And it is your Guardian who will gather them: 25
وإن ربك هو يحشرهم -
He is Wise, Knowing. 25
إنه حكيم عليم -
We have indeed created the human being from resonant clay, like pottery, [drawn] from molded mud,i 26
ولقد خلقنا ٱلإنسن من صلصل من حمإ مسنون -
and the Occulted, We had created them before, from a fire of scorching wind.i 27
وٱلجآن خلقنه من قبل من نار ٱلسموم -
And [recall] when your Guardian said to the Agents: "I am going to create a human being from resonant clay, like pottery, [drawn] from molded mud; when I have formed him and breathed into him of My Influx, fall down before him in prostration."i 29
وإذ قال ربك للملئكة إني خلق بشرا من صلصل من حمإ مسنون فإذا سويته ونفخت فيه من روحي فقعوا له سجدين -
The Agents then prostrated, all together, except the Despairing One [Iblis]: he refused to be among those who prostrated.i 31
فسجد ٱلملئكة كلهم أجمعون إلآ إبليس أبى أن يكون مع ٱلسجدين -
He said: "O Iblis, what is with you, that you are not among those who prostrate?"i 32
قال يإبليس ما لك ألا تكون مع ٱلسجدين -
He said: "I am not [made] to prostrate before a human being You created from resonant clay, like pottery, [drawn] from molded mud." 33
قال لم أكن لأسجد لبشر خلقته من صلصل من حمإ مسنون -
He said: "Get out of here, for you are now banished, and the banishment will weigh upon you until the Day of Retribution."i 35
قال فٱخرج منها فإنك رجيم وإن عليك ٱللعنة إلى يوم ٱلدين -
He said: "My Guardian, grant me then a respite until the day they are raised up." 36
قال رب فأنظرني إلى يوم يبعثون -
He said: "You are then among those granted a respite, until the day of the known moment." 38
قال فإنك من ٱلمنظرين إلى يوم ٱلوقت ٱلمعلوم -
He said: "My Guardian, for having let me go astray, I shall surely make [evil] appear pleasing to them on earth, and I shall surely mislead them all, except Your obedient ones among them who are purified."i 40
قال رب بمآ أغويتني لأزينن لهم في ٱلأرض ولأغوينهم أجمعين إلا عبادك منهم ٱلمخلصين -
He said: "This is a path incumbent upon Me, a straight path. 41
قال هذا صرط على مستقيم -
Over My obedient ones, you have no authority, except over whoever follows you among the misled."i 42
إن عبادي ليس لك عليهم سلطن إلا من ٱتبعك من ٱلغاوين -
And Jahannam is indeed their meeting-place, all of them; it has seven gates, 44
وإن جهنم لموعدهم أجمعين لها سبعة أبوب -
to each gate belongs a determined portion of them. 44
لكل باب منهم جزء مقسوم -
Those who guarded themselves will be in gardens and springs: "Enter therein in peace, in security." 46
إن ٱلمتقين في جنت وعيون ٱدخلوها بسلم ءامنين -
And We shall have removed from their chests all rancor,i 47
ونزعنا ما في صدورهم من غل -
[they will be] brothers, upon couches, facing one another. 47
إخونا على سرر متقبلين -
No fatigue will touch them therein, 48
لا يمسهم فيها نصب -
and they will never be expelled from it. 48
وما هم منها بمخرجين -
Inform My obedient ones that it is I, the Most-Forgiving, the Benevolent, and that My punishment is the painful punishment. 50
نبئ عبادي أني أنا ٱلغفور ٱلرحيم وأن عذابي هو ٱلعذاب ٱلأليم -
And inform them about the guests of Ibrahim, when they entered upon him and said: "Peace!"i 52
ونبئهم عن ضيف إبرهيم إذ دخلوا عليه فقالوا سلما -
He said: "We are, of you, apprehensive."i 52
قال إنا منكم وجلون -
They said: "Do not be apprehensive: we bring you glad tidings of a knowledgeable boy." 53
قالوا لا توجل إنا نبشرك بغلم عليم -
He said: "Do you give me this glad tiding, when old age has touched me? Of what then do you give me tidings?" 54
قال أبشرتموني على أن مسني ٱلكبر فبم تبشرون -
They said: "We bring you this glad tiding in truth: so do not be among those who despair."i 55
قالوا بشرنك بٱلحق فلا تكن من ٱلقنطين -
He said: "And who despairs of his Guardian's benevolence, except the astray?" 56
قال ومن يقنط من رحمة ربه إلا ٱلضآلون -
He said: "What then is your errand, O envoys?" 57
قال فما خطبكم أيها ٱلمرسلون -
They said: "We are sent to a severed people, except the family of Lut.i 59
قالوا إنآ أرسلنآ إلى قوم مجرمين إلآ ءال لوط -
We shall surely save them all, except his wife: We have determined that she is indeed among those who remain behind."i 60
إنا لمنجوهم أجمعين إلا ٱمرأته قدرنآ إنها لمن ٱلغبرين -
And when the envoys came to the family of Lut, he said: "You are people I do not recognize."i 62
فلما جآء ءال لوط ٱلمرسلون قال إنكم قوم منكرون -
They said: "We bring you rather that about which they were in doubt. We have come to you with the truth, and we are indeed truthful. 64
قالوا بل جئنك بما كانوا فيه يمترون وأتينك بٱلحق وإنا لصدقون -
So depart with your family, at a time of the night, and follow behind them, and let none of you turn around, and go where you are commanded."i 65
فأسر بأهلك بقطع من ٱليل وٱتبع أدبرهم ولا يلتفت منكم أحد وٱمضوا حيث تؤمرون -
And We conveyed to him this decree: the last remnant of those people would be cut off, by morning.i 66
وقضينآ إليه ذلك ٱلأمر أن دابر هؤلآء مقطوع مصبحين -
And the people of the Capital came, rejoicing.i 67
وجآء أهل ٱلمدينة يستبشرون -
He said: "These are my guests: do not disgrace me, 68
قال إن هؤلآء ضيفي فلا تفضحون -
and guard yourselves before God, and do not humiliate me." 69
وٱتقوا ٱلله ولا تخزون -
They said: "Did we not forbid you [to receive] anyone from among all beings?"i 70
قالوا أولم ننهك عن ٱلعلمين -
He said: "Here are my daughters, if you must act."i 71
قال هؤلآء بناتي إن كنتم فعلين -
By your life, they were indeed wandering, blinded, in their intoxication.i 72
لعمرك إنهم لفي سكرتهم يعمهون -
The Cry then seized them at daybreak, and We made the top [of their city] its bottom, and rained upon them stones of hardened clay.i 74
فأخذتهم ٱلصيحة مشرقين فجعلنا عليها سافلها وأمطرنا عليهم حجارة من سجيل -
There are indeed in that signs for those who can read the marks.i 75
إن في ذلك لءايت للمتوسمين -
And it is indeed upon a path that endures. 76
وإنها لبسبيل مقيم -
There is indeed in that a sign for the believers. 77
إن في ذلك لءاية للمؤمنين -
And the companions of the Thicket were indeed unjust,i 78
وإن كان أصحب ٱلأيكة لظلمين -
so We took vengeance upon them, 79
فٱنتقمنا منهم -
and these two [cities] are indeed upon a manifest path.i 79
وإنهما لبإمام مبين -
The companions of al-Hijr indeed denied the messengers,i 80
ولقد كذب أصحب ٱلحجر ٱلمرسلين -
And We gave them Our signs, but they turned away from them. 81
وءاتينهم ءايتنا فكانوا عنها معرضين -
And they carved, in the mountains, houses, in complete security. 82
وكانوا ينحتون من ٱلجبال بيوتا ءامنين -
The Cry then seized them in the morning, 83
فأخذتهم ٱلصيحة مصبحين -
and what they had earned availed them nothing. 84
فمآ أغنى عنهم ما كانوا يكسبون -
We created the heavens, the earth, and what is between them, only with truth. 85
وما خلقنا ٱلسموت وٱلأرض وما بينهمآ إلا بٱلحق -
And the Hour is indeed coming: 85
وإن ٱلساعة لءاتية -
so overlook, with a fine overlooking.i 85
فٱصفح ٱلصفح ٱلجميل -
Your Guardian is indeed the Great Creator, the Knowing. 86
إن ربك هو ٱلخلق ٱلعليم -
We have indeed given you seven iterative [verses], and the immense Recitation.i 87
ولقد ءاتينك سبعا من ٱلمثاني وٱلقرءان ٱلعظيم -
Do not extend your eyes toward what We have granted some pairs among them to enjoy,i 88
لا تمدن عينيك إلى ما متعنا به أزوجا منهم -
and do not grieve over them, 88
ولا تحزن عليهم -
and lower your wing for the believers. 88
وٱخفض جناحك للمؤمنين -
And say: "I am, indeed, the clear warner" — as We sent it down upon those who divided it, those who made of this Recitation disparate fragments.i 91
وقل إني أنا ٱلنذير ٱلمبين كمآ أنزلنا على ٱلمقتسمين ٱلذين جعلوا ٱلقرءان عضين -
By your Guardian, We shall surely question them all about what they used to do. 93
فوربك لنسلنهم أجمعين عما كانوا يعملون -
So proclaim openly what you are commanded,i 94
فٱصدع بما تؤمر -
and turn away from those who associate. 94
وأعرض عن ٱلمشركين -
We have indeed sufficed you against the mockers, those who place, alongside God, another deity: 96
إنا كفينك ٱلمستهزءين ٱلذين يجعلون مع ٱلله إلها ءاخر -
they will soon know. 96
فسوف يعلمون -
We shall indeed know that your chest tightens from what they say:i 97
ولقد نعلم أنك يضيق صدرك بما يقولون -
so glorify, in praise, [the glory of] your Guardian, and be among those who prostrate, 98
فسبح بحمد ربك وكن من ٱلسجدين -
and obey your Guardian until certainty comes to you.i 99
وٱعبد ربك حتى يأتيك ٱليقين
