۞
An-Nahl
-
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. The command of God has come: so do not seek to hasten it. 1
Glory be to Him, and He is exalted above what they associate with Him.i 1
He sends down the Agents with the Influx, by His command, upon whom He wills among His obedient ones: "Warn that there is no deity but Me; so guard yourselves before Me."i 2
He created the heavens and the earth with truth. 3
He is exalted above what they associate with Him. 3
He created the human being from a drop, and behold, he is a declared disputant. 4
And the cattle, He created them: 5
in them you find warmth and benefits, and from them you eat. 5
And in them you find a beauty, when you bring them back in the evening and when you lead them out to pasture. 6
And they carry your burdens to a land you would not have reached except with great hardship on yourselves:i 7
your Guardian is indeed full of kindness, full of benevolence. 7
And horses, mules, and donkeys, for you to ride, and as adornment. 8
And He creates what you do not know. 8
To God belongs the tracing of the straight path; some of it veers off.i 9
Had He willed, He would have guided you all. 9
It is He who sent down from the sky a water: from it you have a drink, and from it comes vegetation where you graze [your herds]. 10
By it, He causes to grow for you the crops, the olive, the palms, the vines, and every kind of fruit: 11
there is indeed in that a sign for a people who reflect. 11
He has subjected for you the night and the day, the sun and the moon; and the stars are subjected by His command. 12
There are indeed in that signs for a people who reason. 12
And what He has scattered for you on the earth, of varied colors: 13
there is indeed in that a sign for a people who remember. 13
It is He who has subjected the sea, so that you may eat from it tender flesh and extract from it an ornament that you wear; 14
and you see the vessel cleaving through it, so that you may seek His favor, and perhaps you will be grateful. 14
And He cast upon the earth firmly-anchored mountains, so that it would not shake beneath you, and rivers and paths, so that you might be guided, and landmarks,i 16
and it is by the star that they find their way. 16
Is He who creates then like one who creates nothing? 17
Will you not then remember? 17
If you were to count God's blessings, you could not enumerate them. 18
God is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 18
God knows what you keep secret and what you disclose. 19
Those they invoke besides God create nothing; it is they who are created.i 20
Dead, without life, 21
and they do not even know when they will be raised. 21
Your deity is a single deity. 22
Those who do not believe in the last life have a denying Core, and they are full of pride.i 22
There is no doubt that God knows what they keep secret and what they disclose: 23
He does not love those who are puffed up with pride. 23
And when it is said to them: "What has your Guardian sent down?" they say: "Legends of the ancients" — so as to bear, on the Day of Appearance, their burdens in full, and a portion of the burdens of those they mislead without knowledge:i 25
how detestable is what they bear! 25
Those before them indeed plotted; but God seized their structure from the foundations, so that the roof collapsed upon them from above, and the punishment came to them from where they did not perceive. 26
Then, on the Day of Appearance, He will cover them with shame and say: "Where are My associates, about whom you were in dissension?"i 27
Those to whom knowledge was given will say: "Humiliation, today, and misfortune, are upon those who deny" — those the Agents take, wronging themselves.i 28
They then offer their submission: "We were doing no evil!" — But yes, indeed!i 28
God knows best what you were doing. 28
So enter through the gates of Jahannam, to remain therein:i 29
what a detestable abode for those puffed up with pride! 29
And it is said to those who guarded themselves: "What has your Guardian sent down?" They say: "Something good." 30
For those who do good, in the present life, there is good; 30
but the abode of the last life is better, 30
and what an excellent abode is that of those who guard themselves! 30
The Gardens of Eden, which they will enter, beneath which rivers flow; they will have therein what they desire. 31
Thus God rewards those who guard themselves, those the Agents take in a state of purity,i 32
saying: "Peace be upon you! Enter the Garden, for what you used to do." 32
Do they then wait only for the Agents to come to them, or for the command of your Guardian to come?i 33
Thus did those before them act. 33
God did not wrong them, 33
but they were unjust toward themselves. 33
The evils of what they did overtook them, 34
and what they used to mock encompassed them. 34
Those who associated said: "Had God willed, we would not have obeyed anything besides Him, neither we nor our ancestors, nor would we have forbidden anything besides Him." 35
Thus did those before them act. 35
Is anything then incumbent upon the messengers, except clear transmission? 35
We have indeed raised up, in every community, a messenger: "Obey God and avoid the Tyrant,"i 36
there are among them those God has guided, 36
and there are those upon whom error has come true. 36
So travel the earth and see what was the end of those who denied. 36
If you are eager for their guidance, God does not guide him who strays by himself,i 37
and they will have no helpers. 37
They swore by God, with their most solemn oaths, that God will not raise up the one who dies. 38
But yes indeed! It is a promise incumbent upon Him, in truth — but most people do not know — so that He may make clear to them that on which they differ, and so that those who deny may know that they were liars.i 39
Our only word, for a thing, when We will it, is to say to it: "Be," 40
and it is. 40
And those who emigrated for God, after having suffered injustice, We shall surely establish them in a fine position in the present life; 41
and the reward of the last life is even greater, if they knew — 41
those who were patient and who place their trust in their Guardian. 42
And We sent, before you, none but men to whom We revealed: so ask the keepers of the Reminder, if you do not know — with the clear proofs and the Formulary.i 44
And We have sent down to you the Reminder, so that you may make clear to the people what has been sent down to them, and perhaps they will reflect.i 44
Are those who plotted the evils then sure that God will not cause the earth to swallow them, or that the punishment will not come to them from where they do not perceive, or that He will not seize them in their comings and goings, without their being able to thwart [Him], or that He will not seize them in a gradual dread? 47
Your Guardian is indeed full of kindness, full of benevolence. 47
Have they not seen that, of everything God has created, the shadows incline to the right and the left, prostrate before God, in utter humility?i 48
And before God prostrates everything in the heavens and on the earth, among living creatures, as well as the Agents, without being puffed up with pride: they fear their Guardian, above them, and do what they are commanded.i 50
And God said: "Do not take two deities. 51
He is but a single deity; 51
so it is Me you must dread." 51
To Him belongs what is in the heavens and on the earth, 52
and to Him the Law, permanently.i 52
Would you then fear other than God? 52
Every blessing that is in you comes from God; 53
then, when harm touches you, it is to Him that you cry out, imploring.i 53
Then, when He removes harm from you, behold, a group among you associates [others] with its Guardian, so as to deny what We have given them. 55
So enjoy yourselves, 55
but you will soon know. 55
And they assign, to what they do not know, a share of what We have provided them. 56
By God, you will surely be questioned about what you used to invent. 56
And they assign to God daughters — Glory be to Him!i 57
while for themselves is what they desire. 57
And when one of them receives the news of a daughter, his face darkens, and he is filled with suppressed distress; he hides himself from the people, because of the ill news he was given:i 59
shall he keep her despite the humiliation, or bury her in the ground?i 59
How detestable is what they decide! 59
To those who do not believe in the last life belongs the example of evil, 60
and to God belongs the most exalted example: 60
He is the All-Mighty, the Wise. 60
If God were to seize the people for their injustice, He would not leave upon it [the earth] a single living creature; 61
but He defers them until an appointed term, 61
and when their term comes, they will not be able to delay it by an hour,i 61
nor advance it. 61
And they assign to God what they themselves detest, 62
and their tongues describe the lie, claiming that to them belongs the best: 62
there is no doubt that to them belongs the Fire, and that they will be sent forth into it first.i 62
By God, We indeed sent [messengers] to communities before you; but the Diverter made their actions appear pleasing to them, and he is their ally today:i 63
and they will have a painful punishment. 63
And We have sent down to you the Scripture only so that you may make clear to them that on which they differ, and as guidance and benevolence for a people who believe.i 64
And God sent down from the sky a water, by which He revived the earth after its death: 65
there is indeed in that a sign for a people who hear. 65
And there is indeed, for you, in the cattle, a lesson:i 66
We provide you drink from what is in their bellies, between chyme and blood, a pure milk, pleasant to drink for those who drink it; and from the fruits of palms and vines, you draw an intoxicating drink and an excellent provision.i 67
There is indeed in that a sign for a people who reason. 67
And your Guardian inspired the bee: "Take, among the mountains, dwellings, and in the trees and in what they build [the people]; then eat of all the fruits, and follow the paths of your Guardian, made smooth."i 69
From their bellies comes forth a drink of varied colors, in which there is healing for the people:i 69
there is indeed in that a sign for a people who reflect. 69
God created you, then He causes you to die; 70
and among you are those brought back to the most abject age, so as to know nothing more after having known.i 70
God is Knowing, Able. 70
And God has favored some among you over others in provision: 71
those who have been favored do not hand back their provision to those bound by pledge among them, so that they would be equal in it: would they then deny God's blessing?i 71
Would they then deny the blessing of God?i 71
And God has given you, from yourselves, spouses, and given you, from your spouses, children and grandchildren,i 72
and He has provided you with good things. 72
Would they then believe in falsehood, and deny the blessing of God? 72
And they obey, besides God, what holds for them, from the heavens and the earth, no provision at all, and has no power to do so. 73
So do not multiply examples for God:i 74
God knows, 74
and you do not know. 74
God multiplies an example: a constrained one, having no power at all, and one to whom We have granted, from Us, a fine provision, from which he spends secretly and openly — would they be equal?i 75
Praise be to God! 75
But most of them do not know. 75
And God multiplies another example: two men, one of whom is mute, possessing no power at all, an entire burden upon his master; wherever he sends him, he brings back nothing good — is that one the equal of one who commands justice and stands upon a straight path?i 76
To God belongs what escapes the senses in the heavens and on the earth.i 77
The matter of the Hour is only like the twinkling of an eye, or even swifter. 77
God has power over everything. 77
And God brought you out of your mothers' wombs, knowing nothing, 78
and He gave you hearing, sight, and consciences, perhaps you will be grateful.i 78
Have they not seen the birds, subjected in the space of the sky, held by nothing but God? 79
There are indeed in that signs for a people who believe. 79
And God has given you, from your houses, a peaceful abode, and He has given you, from the hides of cattle, dwellings you find light on the day of your departure and the day of your settling, 80
and, from their wool, their fur, and their hair, furnishings and use for a time. 80
And God has given you, from what He created, shades, and He has given you, from the mountains, shelters, and He has given you garments that protect you from the heat, and garments that protect you from your own violence:i 81
thus He completes His blessing upon you, perhaps you will be true to Him alone.i 81
If they turn away, only clear transmission is incumbent upon you. 82
They recognize the blessing of God, then deny it, 83
and most of them deny. 83
And the Day We raise up, from every community, a witness, it will no longer be permitted to those who deny [to excuse themselves], nor will they be asked to make amends.i 84
And when those who were unjust see the punishment, it will neither be lightened for them, nor will they be granted a reprieve. 85
And when those who associated see their associates, they will say: "Our Guardian, these are our associates whom we used to invoke besides You." 86
These will then address these words to them: "You are indeed liars." 86
And they will offer to God, that Day, their submission, 87
and what they used to invent will stray away from them. 87
Those who deny and who turned away from God's path — We shall add for them a punishment upon the punishment, for the corruption they spread.i 88
And the Day We raise up, in every community, a witness from among themselves, against it, and We bring you, as a witness against these, 89
And We have sent down to you the Scripture, making everything clear, and as guidance, benevolence, and glad tidings for those who are true to God alone.i 89
God commands equity, benevolence, and giving to the close relative, 90
and He forbids indecency, the disavowed, and outrage:i 90
He exhorts you, perhaps you will remember. 90
And keep God's covenant when you make a covenant, 91
and do not break oaths after affirming them, having taken God as a guarantor over you:i 91
God knows what you do. 91
And do not be like her who unravels her thread, after having firmly spun it, reducing it to fibers; you take your oaths as a means of deceit among yourselves, on the pretext that one community is more numerous than another:i 92
God only thereby tests you, 92
and He will surely make clear to you, on the Day of Appearance, that on which you differed.i 92
Had God willed, He would have made you a single community; 93
but He lets go astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills, 93
and you will surely be questioned about what you did. 93
And do not take your oaths as a means of deceit among yourselves, or a foot would slip after having been firm, and you would taste evil for having turned away from God's path; and you would have an immense punishment. 94
And do not sell God's covenant for a small price: 95
what is with God is better for you, if you knew. 95
What is with you is exhausted, 96
and what is with God endures. 96
And We shall surely reward those who were patient according to the best of their deeds.i 96
Whoever does good, male or female, while being a believer, We shall surely make him live a good life, and We shall surely reward them according to the best of their deeds. 97
When you recite the Recitation, seek refuge with God from the banished Diverter.i 98
He has no authority over those who believe and who place their trust in their Guardian. 99
His authority is exercised only over those who take him as ally, and over those who make him an associate. 100
And when We substitute one sign for another sign — God knows best what He sends down — they say: "You are but an inventor." 101
But most of them do not know. 101
Say: "The Influx of holiness has brought it down, from your Guardian, with truth, so as to make firm those who believe, and as guidance and glad tidings for those who are true to God alone."i 102
We indeed know that they say: "It is only a human being who teaches it to him." 103
Yet the tongue of the one to whom they allude is confused, whereas this tongue is flawless, clear.i 103
Those who do not believe in God's signs, God does not guide them, 104
and they will have a painful punishment. 104
Those who invent falsehood are those who do not believe in God's signs, 105
and they are the liars. 105
Whoever denies God after having believed — except one who is coerced, while his Core remains at peace in faith —i 106
but whoever opens his chest to denial, upon them falls a wrath from God, 106
and they will have an immense punishment. 106
That, because they preferred the present life to the last life, and because God does not guide the people who deny. 107
Those are the ones on whose Core, hearing, and sight God has set a seal,i 108
and those are the heedless. 108
There is no doubt that, in the last life, they are the losers. 109
Then, your Guardian, toward those who emigrated after having been tried, then strove and were patient — your Guardian, after that, is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 110
The Day every Self will come pleading for itself, and every Self will be paid in full for what it did, without being wronged.i 111
And God proposes an example: a city that was secure, at peace, to which its provision came abundantly from everywhere; then it denied God's blessings, and God made it taste the garment of hunger and fear, for what they were fabricating.i 112
A messenger, from among them, had indeed come to them, but they denied him; the punishment then seized them, while they were unjust. 113
So eat of what God has provided you, lawful and good, 114
and be grateful for God's blessing, if it is Him you obey. 114
He has forbidden you only carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and what has been consecrated to other than God. 115
But whoever is compelled, without transgression or excess, God is then Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 115
And do not say, for what your tongues falsely describe: "This is lawful and this is forbidden," so as to invent falsehood against God: 116
those who invent falsehood against God will not succeed. 116
A fleeting enjoyment, 117
and they will have a painful punishment. 117
And to the Reoriented, We forbade what We have already set out to you; 118
We did not wrong them, 118
but they were unjust toward themselves. 118
Then, your Guardian, toward those who did evil out of ignorance, then repented after that and reformed — your Guardian, after that, is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 119
Ibrahim was indeed a community unto himself, obedient to God, wholly turned toward Him, and he was not among those who associate,i 120
grateful for His blessings. 121
He elected him and guided him to a straight path. 121
And We gave him, in the present life, good; 122
and in the last life, he is indeed among the righteous. 122
Then We revealed to you: "Follow the doctrine of Ibrahim, wholly turned toward God,"i 123
and he was not among those who associate. 123
The sabt [the act of rest/inaction] was instituted only for those who differed about it: 124
your Guardian will surely judge between them, on the Day of Appearance, concerning that in which they differed.i 124
Call to the path of your Guardian with wisdom and fine exhortation, and debate with them in the finest manner. 125
Your Guardian knows best who strays from His path, 125
and He knows best the rightly guided. 125
And if you punish, punish to the exact measure of that with which you were harmed; 126
but if you are patient, that is indeed better for those who are patient. 126
And be patient — 127
yet your patience rests only in God. 127
And do not grieve over them, and do not be constrained because of what they scheme. 127
God is with those who guard themselves and those who excel [in good]. 128
