A Remembrance of Benevolence
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Kaf. Ha. Ya. ʿAyn. Ṣad.
بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم كهيعصA remembrance of your Guardian's benevolence toward His obedient one Zakariya, when he called upon his Guardian with a secret call,
ذكر رحمت ربك عبده زكريآ إذ نادى ربه ندآء خفياhe said: "My Guardian, the bone has grown weak within me, the head has blazed white, and never, in calling upon You, my Guardian, have I been wretched.
قال رب إني وهن ٱلعظم مني وٱشتعل ٱلرأس شيبا ولم أكن بدعآئك رب شقياI have feared for my kin after me, and my wife is barren. So grant me, from Yourself, an heir who will inherit from me and inherit from the line of Yaacoub,
وإني خفت ٱلمولي من ورآءي وكانت ٱمرأتي عاقرا فهب لي من لدنك وليا يرثني ويرث من ءال يعقوبand make him, my Guardian, pleasing [to You]."
وٱجعله رب رضيا"O Zakariya, We give you glad tidings of a boy: his attribute is Yahya, to whom We have given, before him, no one sharing this attribute."
يزكريآ إنا نبشرك بغلم ٱسمه يحيى لم نجعل له من قبل سمياHe said: "My Guardian, how shall I have a boy, when my wife is barren and I have reached, in old age, utter decrepitude?"
قال رب أنى يكون لي غلم وكانت ٱمرأتي عاقرا وقد بلغت من ٱلكبر عتياHe said: "So it will be. Your Guardian has said: That is easy for Me, and I created you before, when you were nothing."
قال كذلك قال ربك هو على هين وقد خلقتك من قبل ولم تك شياHe said: "My Guardian, appoint for me a sign."
قال رب ٱجعل لي ءايةHe said: "Your sign is that you shall not speak to the people for three complete nights."
قال ءايتك ألا تكلم ٱلناس ثلث ليال سوياHe came out to his people, from the oratory, and signaled to them: "Glorify [Him] at morning and evening."
فخرج على قومه من ٱلمحراب فأوحى إليهم أن سبحوا بكرة وعشيا"O Yahya, take the Scripture with strength."
ييحيى خذ ٱلكتب بقوةAnd We gave him judgment, while he was a young child,
وءاتينه ٱلحكم صبياand a tenderness from Us, and a purity;
وحنانا من لدنا وزكوةand he guarded himself.
وكان تقياVirtuous toward his parents, he was neither tyrannical nor rebellious.
وبرا بولديه ولم يكن جبارا عصياAnd peace be upon him the day he was born, the day he dies, and the day he is raised alive.
وسلم عليه يوم ولد ويوم يموت ويوم يبعث حياAnd mention, in the Scripture, Maryam, when she withdrew from her people to a place toward the east and took, apart from them, a screen of seclusion.
وٱذكر في ٱلكتب مريم إذ ٱنتبذت من أهلها مكانا شرقيا فٱتخذت من دونهم حجاباSo We sent to her Our Influx, who took before her the form of a well-formed human.
فأرسلنآ إليها روحنا فتمثل لها بشرا سوياShe said: "I take refuge from you with the All-Benevolent! If you guard yourself [before Him]…"
قالت إني أعوذ بٱلرحمن منك إن كنت تقياHe said: "I am only the messenger of your Guardian, that He may grant you a pure boy."
قال إنمآ أنا رسول ربك لأهب لك غلما زكياShe said: "How shall I have a boy, when no human has touched me and I have not been unchaste?"
قالت أنى يكون لي غلم ولم يمسسني بشر ولم أك بغياHe said: "So it will be. Your Guardian has said: That is easy for Me.
قال كذلك قال ربك هو على هينAnd We shall make him a sign for the people and a benevolence from Us.
ولنجعله ءاية للناس ورحمة مناIt is a matter already decreed."
وكان أمرا مقضياShe conceived him, then withdrew with him to a far-off place.
فحملته فٱنتبذت به مكانا قصياThe pangs of childbirth drove her to the trunk of the palm tree. She said: "Would that I had died before this, and been a thing forgotten, utterly forgotten!"
فأجآءها ٱلمخاض إلى جذع ٱلنخلة قالت يليتني مت قبل هذا وكنت نسيا منسياHe called to her from below her: "Do not grieve! Your Guardian has set beneath you a couch.
فنادىها من تحتهآ ألا تحزني قد جعل ربك تحتك سرياAnd shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree: it will drop upon you fresh, ripe dates.
وهزي إليك بجذع ٱلنخلة تسقط عليك رطبا جنياSo eat, drink, and let your eye find rest.
فكلي وٱشربي وقري عيناIf you see anyone among the humans, say: "I have vowed to the All-Benevolent an abstention [from speech]; so I shall not speak today to any human."
فإما ترين من ٱلبشر أحدا فقولي إني نذرت للرحمن صوما فلن أكلم ٱليوم إنسياThen she came with him to her people, carrying him.
فأتت به قومها تحملهThey said: "O Maryam, you have done a monstrous thing!
قالوا يمريم لقد جئت شيا فرياO sister of Harun, your father was not a man of evil, nor your mother unchaste."
يأخت هرون ما كان أبوك ٱمرأ سوء وما كانت أمك بغياSo she pointed to him.
فأشارت إليهThey said: "How shall we speak to one who is a young child in the cradle?"
قالوا كيف نكلم من كان في ٱلمهد صبياThe child said: "I am the obedient one of God. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet; He has made me blessed wherever I may be, and enjoined upon me the Contact and the purifying alms as long as I live, and virtue toward my mother.
قال إني عبد ٱلله ءاتىني ٱلكتب وجعلني نبيا وجعلني مباركا أين ما كنت وأوصني بٱلصلوة وٱلزكوة ما دمت حيا وبرا بولدتيHe has not made me tyrannical or wretched.
ولم يجعلني جبارا شقياAnd peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I am raised alive."
وٱلسلم على يوم ولدت ويوم أموت ويوم أبعث حياSuch is Issa, son of Maryam —
ذلك عيسى ٱبن مريمthe word of truth, about which they are in doubt.
قول ٱلحق ٱلذي فيه يمترونIt is not for God to take a child.
ما كان لله أن يتخذ من ولدGlory be to Him!
سبحنهWhen He decrees a matter, He only says to it: "Be,"
إذا قضى أمرا فإنما يقول له كنand it is.
فيكونGod is indeed my Guardian and your Guardian: so obey Him.
وإن ٱلله ربي وربكم فٱعبدوهThis is a straight path.
هذا صرط مستقيمBut the parties diverged among themselves.
فٱختلف ٱلأحزاب من بينهمSo woe to those who disown, at the witnessing of an immense Day!
فويل للذين كفروا من مشهد يوم عظيمHow well they will hear and see, the Day they come to Us!
أسمع بهم وأبصر يوم يأتونناYet the wrongdoers, today, are in manifest error.
لكن ٱلظلمون ٱليوم في ضلل مبينAnd warn them of the Day of Regret, when the matter is decided, while they are heedless and do not believe.
وأنذرهم يوم ٱلحسرة إذ قضي ٱلأمر وهم في غفلة وهم لا يؤمنونIt is indeed We who will inherit the earth and all who are upon it,
إنا نحن نرث ٱلأرض ومن عليهاand to Us they will be returned.
وإلينا يرجعونAnd mention, in the Scripture, Ibrahim: he was a man of truth, a prophet, when he said to his father: "O my father, why do you obey what neither hears nor sees and avails you nothing?
وٱذكر في ٱلكتب إبرهيم إنه كان صديقا نبيا إذ قال لأبيه يأبت لم تعبد ما لا يسمع ولا يبصر ولا يغني عنك شياO my father, there has come to me of knowledge what has not come to you; so follow me, I will guide you along an even path.
يأبت إني قد جآءني من ٱلعلم ما لم يأتك فٱتبعني أهدك صرطا سوياO my father, do not obey the Diverter:
يأبت لا تعبد ٱلشيطنthe Diverter is rebellious toward the All-Benevolent.
إن ٱلشيطن كان للرحمن عصياO my father, I fear that a punishment from the All-Benevolent will touch you, and you become an ally of the Diverter."
يأبت إني أخاف أن يمسك عذاب من ٱلرحمن فتكون للشيطن وليا[His father] said: "Do you spurn my deities, O Ibrahim?
قال أراغب أنت عن ءالهتيIf you do not desist, I will banish you! Keep away from me for a long time."
يإبرهيم لئن لم تنته لأرجمنك وٱهجرني مليا[Ibrahim] said: "Peace be upon you. I will ask my Guardian's forgiveness for you: He has ever been attentive to me. I withdraw from you and from what you invoke besides God, and I invoke my Guardian; perhaps, in invoking my Guardian, I shall not be wretched."
قال سلم عليك سأستغفر لك ربي إنه كان بي حفيا وأعتزلكم وما تدعون من دون ٱلله وأدعوا ربي عسى ألآ أكون بدعآء ربي شقياWhen he had withdrawn from them and from what they obeyed besides God, We granted him Ishaq and Yaacoub,
فلما ٱعتزلهم وما يعبدون من دون ٱلله وهبنا له إسحق ويعقوبand each We made a prophet.
وكلا جعلنا نبياAnd We granted them [a share] of Our benevolence, and gave them a lofty renown of truth.
ووهبنا لهم من رحمتنا وجعلنا لهم لسان صدق علياAnd mention, in the Scripture, Moussa: he was devoted exclusively [to God], and he was a messenger, a prophet.
وٱذكر في ٱلكتب موسى إنه كان مخلصا وكان رسولا نبياWe called him from the right side of the Mount, and drew him near in confidence.
وندينه من جانب ٱلطور ٱلأيمن وقربنه نجياAnd We granted him, out of Our benevolence, his brother Harun, a prophet.
ووهبنا له من رحمتنآ أخاه هرون نبياAnd mention, in the Scripture, Ismail: he was true to his promise, and he was a messenger, a prophet. He would enjoin upon his people the Contact and the purifying alms,
وٱذكر في ٱلكتب إسمعيل إنه كان صادق ٱلوعد وكان رسولا نبيا وكان يأمر أهله بٱلصلوة وٱلزكوةand he was, with his Guardian, well-pleasing.
وكان عند ربه مرضياAnd mention, in the Scripture, Idris: he was a man of truth, a prophet.
وٱذكر في ٱلكتب إدريس إنه كان صديقا نبياAnd We raised him to a lofty station.
ورفعنه مكانا علياThose are the ones God has favored among the prophets: of the progeny of Adam, of those We carried with Nuh, of the progeny of Ibrahim and of Israel, and of those We guided and chose.
أولئك ٱلذين أنعم ٱلله عليهم من ٱلنبين من ذرية ءادم وممن حملنا مع نوح ومن ذرية إبرهيم وإسرءيل وممن هدينا وٱجتبينآWhen the signs of the All-Benevolent were recited to them, they fell down prostrate, weeping.
إذا تتلى عليهم ءايت ٱلرحمن خروا سجدا وبكياThen there succeeded them a generation who neglected the Contact and followed desires: so they will meet with misguidance — except one who repents, believes, and acts righteously; those will enter the Garden and be wronged in nothing: the Gardens of permanent abode which the All-Benevolent has promised His obedient ones, in what escapes their presence.
فخلف من بعدهم خلف أضاعوا ٱلصلوة وٱتبعوا ٱلشهوت فسوف يلقون غيا إلا من تاب وءامن وعمل صلحا فأولئك يدخلون ٱلجنة ولا يظلمون شيا جنت عدن ٱلتي وعد ٱلرحمن عباده بٱلغيبHis promise is indeed to be fulfilled.
إنه كان وعده مأتياThey will hear in it no idle talk,
لا يسمعون فيها لغواonly: "Peace!"
إلا سلماAnd they will have their provision there, morning and evening.
ولهم رزقهم فيها بكرة وعشياSuch is the Garden that We shall give as inheritance, among Our obedient ones, to whoever guarded himself.
تلك ٱلجنة ٱلتي نورث من عبادنا من كان تقيا"We do not descend except by the command of your Guardian.
وما نتنزل إلا بأمر ربكTo Him belongs what is before us, what is behind us, and what is between that.
له ما بين أيدينا وما خلفنا وما بين ذلكAnd your Guardian is never forgetful."
وما كان ربك نسياThe Guardian of the heavens, the earth, and what is between them: so obey Him, and be constant in His obedience.
رب ٱلسموت وٱلأرض وما بينهما فٱعبده وٱصطبر لعبدتهDo you know anyone who shares His attribute?
هل تعلم له سمياAnd the human being says: "When I am dead, shall I really be brought forth alive?"
ويقول ٱلإنسن أءذا ما مت لسوف أخرج حياDoes the human being not remember that We created him before, when he was nothing?
أولا يذكر ٱلإنسن أنا خلقنه من قبل ولم يك شياBy your Guardian, We will surely gather them, along with the Diverters; then We will bring them, on their knees, around Jahannam.
فوربك لنحشرنهم وٱلشيطين ثم لنحضرنهم حول جهنم جثياThen We will pluck out, from every faction, those most insolent toward the All-Benevolent.
ثم لننزعن من كل شيعة أيهم أشد على ٱلرحمن عتياThen it is We who know best who most deserves to burn in it.
ثم لنحن أعلم بٱلذين هم أولى بها صلياThere is none of you but will come to it: that is, for your Guardian, an irrevocable decree.
وإن منكم إلا واردها كان على ربك حتما مقضياThen We will save those who guarded themselves, and leave the wrongdoers in it, on their knees.
ثم ننجي ٱلذين ٱتقوا ونذر ٱلظلمين فيها جثياAnd when Our clear signs are recited to them, those who disown say to those who believe: "Which of the two parties has the better standing and the finer assembly?"
وإذا تتلى عليهم ءايتنا بينت قال ٱلذين كفروا للذين ءامنوا أى ٱلفريقين خير مقاما وأحسن ندياHow many a generation before them We have annihilated, finer in possessions and in appearance!
وكم أهلكنا قبلهم من قرن هم أحسن أثثا ورءياSay: "Whoever is in error, let the All-Benevolent extend for him a long respite!"
قل من كان في ٱلضللة فليمدد له ٱلرحمن مداuntil, seeing what they are promised — either the punishment or the Hour — they know who is worse in station and weaker in support.
حتى إذا رأوا ما يوعدون إما ٱلعذاب وإما ٱلساعة فسيعلمون من هو شر مكانا وأضعف جنداAnd God increases in guidance those who let themselves be guided.
ويزيد ٱلله ٱلذين ٱهتدوا هدىAnd the enduring, righteous deeds are, with your Guardian, better in requital and better in outcome.
وٱلبقيت ٱلصلحت خير عند ربك ثوابا وخير مرداHave you seen the one who disowned Our signs and said: "I will surely be given goods and children"? Has he pierced what escapes his presence, or taken a pact with the All-Benevolent? By no means!
أفرءيت ٱلذي كفر بايتنا وقال لأوتين مالا وولدا أطلع ٱلغيب أم ٱتخذ عند ٱلرحمن عهدا كلاWe will record what he says and extend for him the punishment, at length.
سنكتب ما يقول ونمد له من ٱلعذاب مداAnd We will inherit what he speaks of, and he will come to Us, alone.
ونرثه ما يقول ويأتينا فرداThey have taken, besides God, deities, that they might be a might for them. By no means!
وٱتخذوا من دون ٱلله ءالهة ليكونوا لهم عزا كلاThey will disown their obedience and stand against them as adversaries.
سيكفرون بعبادتهم ويكونون عليهم ضداHave you not seen that We have loosed the Diverters upon those who disown, inciting them relentlessly?
ألم تر أنآ أرسلنا ٱلشيطين على ٱلكفرين تؤزهم أزاSo do not be hasty against them:
فلا تعجل عليهمWe are only counting out for them [their days], count by count.
إنما نعد لهم عداThe Day We gather those who guarded themselves to the All-Benevolent, as a delegation, and drive the severed to Jahannam, like a herd to the watering-place.
يوم نحشر ٱلمتقين إلى ٱلرحمن وفدا ونسوق ٱلمجرمين إلى جهنم ورداThey will hold no intercession, except one who has taken a pact with the All-Benevolent.
لا يملكون ٱلشفعة إلا من ٱتخذ عند ٱلرحمن عهداAnd they have said: "The All-Benevolent has taken a child."
وقالوا ٱتخذ ٱلرحمن ولداYou have put forth an enormity! The heavens nearly rupture from it, the earth splits open, and the mountains collapse in ruin — that they have ascribed a child to the All-Benevolent.
لقد جئتم شيا إدا تكاد ٱلسموت يتفطرن منه وتنشق ٱلأرض وتخر ٱلجبال هدا أن دعوا للرحمن ولداIt does not befit the All-Benevolent to take a child.
وما ينبغي للرحمن أن يتخذ ولداThere is none in the heavens and the earth but comes to the All-Benevolent as an obedient one.
إن كل من في ٱلسموت وٱلأرض إلآ ءاتي ٱلرحمن عبداHe has enumerated them and counted them, one by one.
لقد أحصىهم وعدهم عداAnd each of them will come to Him, on the Day of Appearance, alone.
وكلهم ءاتيه يوم ٱلقيمة فرداTo those who have believed and done righteous deeds, the All-Benevolent will grant affection.
إن ٱلذين ءامنوا وعملوا ٱلصلحت سيجعل لهم ٱلرحمن وداWe have made it easy on your tongue only so that you may give glad tidings by it to those who guard themselves and warn by it a contentious people.
فإنما يسرنه بلسانك لتبشر به ٱلمتقين وتنذر به قوما لداHow many a generation before them We have annihilated! Do you perceive a single one of them, or hear from them the faintest murmur?
وكم أهلكنا قبلهم من قرن هل تحس منهم من أحد أو تسمع لهم ركزا
