Ash-Shu'ara

  • In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Ta. Sin. Mim.i 1
  • These are the signs of the explicit Scripture.i 2
  • Perhaps you will consume yourself with grief because they are not believers.i 3
  • If We willed, We could send down upon them a sign from the sky before which their necks would stay bowed. 4
  • No new reminder comes to them from the All-Benevolent without them turning away from it. 5
  • Yet they have denied; the news of what they used to mock will soon reach them. 6
  • Have they not seen the earth, how much We have made grow in it of every generous kind? 7
  • In that, there is indeed a sign. 8
  • But most of them are not believers. 8
  • And your Guardian is indeed the All-Powerful, the Benevolent. 9
  • And recall when your Guardian called out to Moussa: 'Go to the unjust people, the people of Fir'awn.i 11
  • Will they not become guarded?'i 11
  • He said [Moussa]: 'My Guardian, I fear they will deny me, that my chest will tighten and my tongue will not loosen; so send to Harun. They hold a grievance against me, and I fear they will kill me.'i 14
  • He said [God]: 'By no means! 15
  • Go, both of you, with Our signs; We are with you, listening.' 15
  • 'Go then to Fir'awn and say: We are the messengers of the Guardian of all beings; let the Children of Israel go with us.'i 17
  • He said [Fir'awn]: 'Did we not raise you among us as a child, and did you not stay among us for years of your life? You committed the act you committed, and you are among those who deny.'i 19
  • He said [Moussa]: 'I did it then, while I was among the astray.i 20
  • So I fled from you when I feared you; then my Guardian granted me judgment and made me one of the messengers. 21
  • And this favor you reproach me with is that you enslaved the Children of Israel!' 22
  • Fir'awn said: 'And what is the Guardian of all beings?'i 23
  • He said [Moussa]: 'The Guardian of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you are of those who are certain.'i 24
  • He said [Fir'awn] to those around him: 'Do you not listen?'i 25
  • He said [Moussa]: 'Your Guardian and the Guardian of your earliest forefathers.'i 26
  • He said [Fir'awn]: 'Your messenger who has been sent to you is certainly deranged.'i 27
  • He said [Moussa]: 'The Guardian of the east and the west and what is between them, if you would reason.'i 28
  • He said [Fir'awn]: 'If you take a god other than me, I will certainly put you among the imprisoned.'i 29
  • He said [Moussa]: 'Even if I brought you something explicit?'i 30
  • He said [Fir'awn]: 'Bring it then, if you are among the truthful.'i 31
  • He threw down his staff, and behold, it was a clear serpent; and he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to those who looked. 33
  • He said [Fir'awn] to the court around him: 'This one is truly a knowing worker of illusion, who wants to drive you out of your land by his illusion. What do you propose then?'i 35
  • They said [Fir'awn's court]: 'Put him and his brother off, and send gatherers into the cities, who will bring you every great, knowing worker of illusion.'i 37
  • The workers of illusion were gathered for the appointment of a known day. 38
  • And it was said to the people: 'Will you gather, so that we may follow the workers of illusion, if they are the victors?' 40
  • When the workers of illusion came, they said to Fir'awn: 'Will there truly be a reward for us, if we are the victors?'i 41
  • He said [Fir'awn]: 'Yes, and you will then certainly be among those brought near.'i 42
  • Moussa said to them: 'Throw what you have to throw.'i 43
  • So they threw their ropes and their staffs and said: 'By the might of Fir'awn, it is we, indeed, who will be the victors!'i 44
  • Then Moussa threw his staff, and behold, it swallowed up what they had fabricated as illusion.i 45
  • The workers of illusion then fell down prostrate. 46
  • They said [the workers of illusion]: 'We believe in the Guardian of all beings, the Guardian of Moussa and Harun.'i 48
  • He said [Fir'awn]: 'Have you believed in him before I gave you permission? He is certainly your chief, who taught you illusion.i 49
  • You will soon know. 49
  • I will certainly cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, and crucify you all together.'i 49
  • They said [the workers of illusion]: 'No harm! 50
  • It is to our Guardian that we are turning back. 50
  • We hope our Guardian will forgive us our faults, since we are the first of the believers.' 51
  • And We revealed to Moussa: 'Set out by night with My obedient ones; you will be pursued.'i 52
  • Fir'awn then sent gatherers into the cities:i 53
  • 'These are indeed a small band, and they enrage us, and we are, all together, a vigilant force.'i 56
  • So We brought them out of gardens and springs, and treasures and a noble station. 58
  • Thus. 59
  • And We made the Children of Israel inherit them, and they pursued them at sunrise. 60
  • And when the two groups saw each other, the companions of Moussa said: 'We are certainly overtaken!'i 61
  • He said [Moussa]: 'By no means!i 62
  • My Guardian is indeed with me; He will guide me.' 62
  • We then revealed to Moussa: 'Strike the sea with your staff.' It split, and each part was like an immense mountain.i 63
  • And We brought the others close there. 64
  • And We saved Moussa and all those with him, then We drowned the others.i 66
  • In that, there is indeed a sign. 67
  • But most of them are not believers. 67
  • And your Guardian is indeed the All-Powerful, the Benevolent. 68
  • And recite to them the account of Ibrahim, when he said to his father and his people: 'What do you obey?'i 70
  • They said [Ibrahim's people]: 'We obey idols, and we remain devoted to them.'i 71
  • He said [Ibrahim]: 'Do they hear you when you call upon them, or do they benefit you, or do they harm you?'i 73
  • They said [Ibrahim's people]: 'No, but we found our ancestors acting thus.'i 74
  • He said [Ibrahim]: "Have you then seen what you used to obey, you and your most distant forefathers? They are indeed enemies to me,i 77
  • except the Guardian of all beings, the one who created me and who guides me, 78
  • and the one who feeds me and gives me drink, and who, when I am ill, heals me, 80
  • and the one who will cause me to die then bring me back to life, 81
  • and the one from whom I hope forgiveness for my fault on the Day of Retribution.i 82
  • My Guardian, grant me judgment and join me with the righteous, 83
  • and grant me a tongue of truth among those who come after, 84
  • and make me one of the heirs of the garden of blessing,i 85
  • and forgive my father, for he was among the astray, 86
  • and do not disgrace me on the day they are resurrected, the day when neither wealth nor sons will be of use, except to one who comes to God with an intact Core.i 89
  • And the garden will be brought near to those who guard themselves, 90
  • and the Blaze will be shown to those astray.i 91
  • And it will be said to them: 'Where are those you used to obey, besides God, 93
  • do they help you, or do they help themselves?' 93
  • They will be cast into it, they, those astray, and the troops of the Despairing One [Iblis], all together.i 95
  • They will say, disputing there: 'By God, we were indeed in explicit error, when we set you on the same level as the Guardian of all beings.i 98
  • And it was only the severed who led us astray. 99
  • So we have neither intercessors, nor a devoted friend. 101
  • If only we had a return, we would be among the believers!' 102
  • In that, there is indeed a sign. 103
  • But most of them are not believers. 103
  • And your Guardian is indeed the All-Powerful, the Benevolent. 104
  • The people of Nuh denied the messengers, when their brother Nuh said to them: 'Will you not guard yourselves? I am for you a trustworthy messenger.i 107
  • So guard yourselves before God and obey me. 108
  • I ask you no reward for this; 109
  • my reward is due only from the Guardian of all beings. 109
  • So guard yourselves before God and obey me.' 110
  • They said [Nuh's people]: 'Shall we believe in you while it is the most abject who have followed you?'i 111
  • He said [Nuh]: 'What do I know of what they used to do?i 112
  • Their account is due only to my Guardian, if only you could perceive it. 113
  • And I am not one to drive away the believers; I am only an explicit warner.' 115
  • Nuh's people said: "If you do not stop, O Nuh, you will certainly be among the banished."i 116
  • He said [Nuh]: 'My Guardian, my people have denied me. Judge then between me and them decisively, and save me and those of the believers who are with me.'i 118
  • So We saved him and those with him, in the laden vessel. 119
  • Then We drowned afterward those who remained. 120
  • In that, there is indeed a sign. 121
  • But most of them are not believers. 121
  • And your Guardian is indeed the All-Powerful, the Benevolent. 122
  • The Recidivists [Aad] denied the messengers, when their brother Hud said to them: 'Will you not guard yourselves? I am for you a trustworthy messenger. 125
  • So guard yourselves before God and obey me. 126
  • I ask you no reward for this; 127
  • my reward is due only from the Guardian of all beings. 127
  • Do you build on every height a monument, in play, and take for yourselves works in hope of lasting forever, and when you seize, you seize as tyrants? 130
  • So guard yourselves before God and obey me. 131
  • And guard yourselves before the One who has provided you with what you know: He has provided you with livestock, sons, gardens and springs. 134
  • I fear for you the punishment of an immense day.' 135
  • They said [Aad's people]: 'It is the same to us whether you warn or are not among those who warn; this is only the custom of the ancients, and we shall not be punished.' 138
  • So they denied him, and We destroyed them. 139
  • In that, there is indeed a sign. 139
  • But most of them are not believers. 139
  • And your Guardian is indeed the All-Powerful, the Benevolent. 140
  • The Depleters [Thamud] denied the messengers, when their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not guard yourselves? I am for you a trustworthy messenger.i 143

  • So guard yourselves before God and obey me. 144
  • I ask you no reward for this; 145
  • my reward is due only from the Guardian of all beings. 145
  • Will you be left secure here, amid gardens and springs, and crops and date-palms with tender clusters, while you carve houses out of the mountains, skilled and expert?i 149
  • So guard yourselves before God and obey me. 150
  • And do not obey the command of the excessive, who spread corruption on the earth and set nothing right. 152
  • They said [Thamud's people]: 'You are only among the bewitched; you are only a man like us; bring then a sign, if you are among the truthful.' 154
  • He said [Salih]: 'Here is a she-camel; she has a right to drink,i 155
  • and you have a right to drink on a known day. 155
  • Do her no harm, or the punishment of an immense day will seize you.' 156
  • Yet they hamstrung her, then found themselves full of regret, and the punishment seized them. 158
  • In that, there is indeed a sign. 158
  • But most of them are not believers. 158
  • And your Guardian is indeed the All-Powerful, the Benevolent. 159
  • The people of Lut denied the messengers, when their brother Lut said to them: 'Will you not guard yourselves? I am for you a trustworthy messenger.i 162
  • So guard yourselves before God and obey me. 163
  • I ask you no reward for this; 164
  • my reward is due only from the Guardian of all beings. 164
  • Do you approach males, among all beings, and leave what your Guardian has created for you as spouses?i 166
  • You are rather a people who overstep. 166
  • They said [Lut's people]: 'If you do not stop, O Lut, you will certainly be among those expelled.'i 167
  • He said [Lut]: 'I am certainly, toward your conduct, among those who abhor.i 168
  • My Guardian, save me, and my family, from what they do.' 169
  • So We saved him, and all his family, except an old woman, among those who remained behind; then We destroyed afterward the others. 172
  • And We rained down upon them a rain; 173
  • how evil was the rain of those who had been warned! 173
  • In that, there is indeed a sign. 174
  • But most of them are not believers. 174
  • And your Guardian is indeed the All-Powerful, the Benevolent. 175
  • The people of the Thicket denied the messengers, when Shu'ayb said to them: 'Will you not guard yourselves? I am for you a trustworthy messenger.i 178
  • So guard yourselves before God and obey me. 179
  • I ask you no reward for this; 180
  • my reward is due only from the Guardian of all beings. 180
  • Give full measure, 181
  • and do not be among those who cause loss. 181
  • Weigh with the exact scale, 182
  • and do not deprive people of their possessions, 183
  • and do not spread corruption on the earth as troublemakers. 183
  • Guard yourselves before the One who created you, and the earlier generations. 184
  • They said [the people of the Thicket]: 'You are only among the bewitched; you are only a man like us, and we certainly consider you among the liars. So cause a fragment of the sky to fall upon us, if you are among the truthful.' 187
  • He said [Shu'ayb]: 'My Guardian knows best what you do.' 188
  • So they denied him, and the punishment of the day of shadow seized them. 189
  • It was certainly the punishment of an immense day. 189
  • In that, there is indeed a sign. 190
  • But most of them are not believers. 190
  • And your Guardian is indeed the All-Powerful, the Benevolent. 191
  • And this is indeed a revelation from the Guardian of all beings. 192
  • The trustworthy Influx came down with it, upon your Core, so that you may be among the warners, in impeccable, explicit tongue.i 195
  • And this is indeed found in the Formularies of the ancients.i 196
  • Is it not a sign for them, that the scholars of the Children of Israel know it? 197
  • And if We had sent it down upon one of those whose tongue is not impeccable, and he had recited it to them, they would not have believed in it.i 199
  • Thus We have made it penetrate the Cores of the severed; they will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment, which will come to them suddenly, without their perceiving it, and they will say then: 'Will we be granted a delay?'i 203
  • Is it then Our punishment that they seek to hasten? 204
  • Do you see? If We granted them enjoyment for years, then what they were promised came to them, of what use to them was the enjoyment they were granted? 207
  • And We did not destroy any city without it having had warners, as a reminder; 209
  • and We have never been unjust. 209
  • And it is not the Diverters who descended with it; that does not suit them, and they cannot do it.i 211
  • They are indeed kept away from all listening. 212
  • So do not invoke, alongside God, another god, or you would be among the punished. 213

  • except those who have believed, done righteous works, invoked God abundantly, and defended themselves after being wronged; 227
  • and those who have done injustice will soon know to what turning point they will turn. 227
