Will I Acknowledge, or Disown?
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Ṭa. Sin.
بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم طسThese are the signs of the Recitation and an explicit Scripture,
تلك ءايت ٱلقرءان وكتاب مبينguidance and glad tiding for the believers, those who maintain the Contact and give the purifying alms, and who, as for the last life, are certain of it.
هدى وبشرى للمؤمنين ٱلذين يقيمون ٱلصلوة ويؤتون ٱلزكوة وهم بٱلءاخرة هم يوقنونThose who do not believe in the last life, We have made their deeds seem fair to them, and they wander blindly.
إن ٱلذين لا يؤمنون بٱلءاخرة زينا لهم أعملهم فهم يعمهونThose are the ones for whom the worst punishment is due, and it is they, in the last life, who will be the greatest losers.
أولئك ٱلذين لهم سوء ٱلعذاب وهم في ٱلءاخرة هم ٱلأخسرونAnd you, you receive the Recitation from a Wise, an All-Knowing.
وإنك لتلقى ٱلقرءان من لدن حكيم عليمWhen Moussa said to his family: 'I have perceived a fire; I will bring you news of it, or bring you a burning brand, so that you may warm yourselves.'
إذ قال موسى لأهله إني ءانست نارا ساتيكم منها بخبر أو ءاتيكم بشهاب قبس لعلكم تصطلونWhen he came to it, he was called: 'Blessed is he who is in the fire, and he who is around it!
فلما جآءها نودي أن بورك من في ٱلنار ومن حولهاGlory to God, Guardian of all beings!
وسبحن ٱلله رب ٱلعلمينO Moussa, it is I, God, the All-Powerful, the Wise. Throw down your staff.'
يموسى إنه أنا ٱلله ٱلعزيز ٱلحكيم وألق عصاكWhen he saw it vibrate as though it were an Occulted, he turned back in flight and did not return.
فلما رءاها تهتز كأنها جآن ولى مدبرا ولم يعقب'O Moussa, do not fear;
يموسى لا تخفas for Me, the messengers do not fear in My presence,
إني لا يخاف لدى ٱلمرسلونexcept one who has done wrong, then replaced evil with good; then, indeed, I am Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
إلا من ظلم ثم بدل حسنا بعد سوء فإني غفور رحيمPut your hand into your collar: it will come out white, without any harm,
وأدخل يدك في جيبك تخرج بيضآء من غير سوءamong nine signs, to Fir'awn and his people;
في تسع ءايت إلى فرعون وقومهthey are indeed a people of oversteppers.'
إنهم كانوا قوما فسقينWhen Our signs came to them, plainly visible, they said: 'This is an explicit illusion.'
فلما جآءتهم ءايتنا مبصرة قالوا هذا سحر مبينAnd they stubbornly rejected them, while their own selves were certain of them, out of injustice and arrogance.
وجحدوا بها وٱستيقنتهآ أنفسهم ظلما وعلواSo look at what was the end of those who spread corruption.
فٱنظر كيف كان عقبة ٱلمفسدينAnd We certainly gave Dawud and Sulayman knowledge; and both said: 'Praise be to God, who has favored us above many of His believing obedient ones.'
ولقد ءاتينا داود وسليمن علما وقالا ٱلحمد لله ٱلذي فضلنا على كثير من عباده ٱلمؤمنينAnd Sulayman inherited from Dawud, and he said: 'O people, we have been taught the language of birds, and we have been given a share of everything;
وورث سليمن داود وقال يأيها ٱلناس علمنا منطق ٱلطير وأوتينا من كل شىءthis is indeed the explicit favor.'
إن هذا لهو ٱلفضل ٱلمبينAnd Sulayman's troops were gathered for him, among the Occulted, humans and birds, and they were arranged in ranks.
وحشر لسليمن جنوده من ٱلجن وٱلإنس وٱلطير فهم يوزعونUntil, when they came to the valley of the ants, an ant said: 'O ants, enter your dwellings, lest Sulayman and his troops crush you without perceiving it.'
حتى إذآ أتوا على واد ٱلنمل قالت نملة يأيها ٱلنمل ٱدخلوا مسكنكم لا يحطمنكم سليمن وجنوده وهم لا يشعرونHe smiled, amused at her words, and said: 'My Guardian, inspire me to acknowledge the blessing You have granted me and my parents, and to do righteous work that pleases You, and admit me, by Your benevolence, among Your righteous obedient ones.'
فتبسم ضاحكا من قولها وقال رب أوزعني أن أشكر نعمتك ٱلتي أنعمت على وعلى ولدى وأن أعمل صلحا ترضىه وأدخلني برحمتك في عبادك ٱلصلحينHe reviewed the birds, and said: 'Why do I not see the hoopoe? Is she among the absent?
وتفقد ٱلطير فقال ما لي لآ أرى ٱلهدهد أم كان من ٱلغآئبينI will certainly punish her with a severe punishment, or I will slaughter her, unless she brings me a clear authority.'
لأعذبنه عذابا شديدا أو لأاذبحنه أو ليأتيني بسلطن مبينShe did not stay away long,
فمكث غير بعيدand said [the hoopoe]: 'I have grasped what you have not grasped, and I bring you from Saba a certain report.
فقال أحطت بما لم تحط به وجئتك من سبإ بنبإ يقينI found a woman ruling over them, who has been given everything,
إني وجدت ٱمرأة تملكهم وأوتيت من كل شىءAnd she has an immense Edifice.
ولها عرش عظيمI found her and her people prostrating before the sun, besides God; and the Diverter has made their deeds seem fair to them, and thus turned them from the path, so that they are not guided, so that they do not prostrate before God, who brings forth what is hidden in the heavens and the earth, and who knows what they conceal and what they disclose.
وجدتها وقومها يسجدون للشمس من دون ٱلله وزين لهم ٱلشيطن أعملهم فصدهم عن ٱلسبيل فهم لا يهتدون ألا يسجدوا لله ٱلذي يخرج ٱلخبء في ٱلسموت وٱلأرض ويعلم ما تخفون وما تعلنونGod, there is no deity but Him, the Guardian of the immense Edifice.
ٱلله لآ إله إلا هو رب ٱلعرش ٱلعظيمHe said [Sulayman]: 'We shall see whether you have spoken truly, or are among the liars.
قال سننظر أصدقت أم كنت من ٱلكذبينGo with this letter of mine, cast it to them, then withdraw from them, and see what they send back.'
ٱذهب بكتبي هذا فألقه إليهم ثم تول عنهم فٱنظر ماذا يرجعونShe said [the Queen of Saba]: 'O court, a noble letter has been cast to me. It is from Sulayman, and it reads: In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent; do not exalt yourselves against me, and come to me as those true to God alone.'
قالت يأيها ٱلملؤا إني ألقي إلى كتب كريم إنه من سليمن وإنه بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم ألا تعلوا على وأتوني مسلمينShe said [the Queen of Saba]: 'O court, advise me on my affair; I do not decide any affair without you bearing witness to it.'
قالت يأيها ٱلملؤا أفتوني في أمري ما كنت قاطعة أمرا حتى تشهدونThey said [the queen's court]: 'We are possessors of strength and possessors of severe rigor, but the affair is yours to decide; so consider what you command.'
قالوا نحن أولوا قوة وأولوا بأس شديد وٱلأمر إليك فٱنظري ماذا تأمرينShe said [the Queen of Saba]: 'Kings, when they enter a city, corrupt it, and reduce the noble among its people to humiliation;
قالت إن ٱلملوك إذا دخلوا قرية أفسدوها وجعلوا أعزة أهلهآ أذلةand thus they act.
وكذلك يفعلونNow, I am going to send them a gift, and see what the envoys bring back.'
وإني مرسلة إليهم بهدية فناظرة بم يرجع ٱلمرسلونWhen it came to Sulayman, he said: 'Do you wish to aid me with goods? What God has given me is better than what He has given you; it is you rather who rejoice in your gift.
فلما جآء سليمن قال أتمدونن بمال فمآ ءاتىن ٱلله خير ممآ ءاتىكم بل أنتم بهديتكم تفرحونGo back to them: we shall certainly come to them with troops they cannot withstand, and we shall certainly drive them out from it, humbled and diminished.'
ٱرجع إليهم فلنأتينهم بجنود لا قبل لهم بها ولنخرجنهم منهآ أذلة وهم صغرونHe said [Sulayman]: 'O court, which of you will bring me her Edifice before they come to me true to God alone?'
قال يأيها ٱلملؤا أيكم يأتيني بعرشها قبل أن يأتوني مسلمينAn ifrit among the Occulted said: 'I will bring it to you before you rise from your place; and I am capable of it, trustworthy.'
قال عفريت من ٱلجن أنا ءاتيك به قبل أن تقوم من مقامك وإني عليه لقوي أمينThe one who possessed knowledge of the Code said: 'I will bring it to you before even your glance returns to you.'
قال ٱلذي عنده علم من ٱلكتب أنا ءاتيك به قبل أن يرتد إليك طرفكWhen he saw it placed beside him, he said: 'This is from the favor of my Guardian, to test me: will I acknowledge, or will I disown?
فلما رءاه مستقرا عنده قال هذا من فضل ربي ليبلوني ءأشكر أم أكفرAnd whoever acknowledges, does so only for himself,
ومن شكر فإنما يشكر لنفسهand whoever disowns, my Guardian is indeed Self-Sufficient, generous.'
ومن كفر فإن ربي غني كريمHe said [Sulayman]: 'Make her Edifice unrecognizable to her; we shall see whether she is guided, or is among those who are not guided.'
قال نكروا لها عرشها ننظر أتهتدي أم تكون من ٱلذين لا يهتدونWhen she arrived, it was said: 'Is your Edifice like this?' She said: 'It is as if it were.
فلما جآءت قيل أهكذا عرشك قالت كأنه هوAnd knowledge had been given to us before her, and we were true to God alone.'
وأوتينا ٱلعلم من قبلها وكنا مسلمينAnd what she used to obey, besides God, had turned her away;
وصدها ما كانت تعبد من دون ٱللهshe indeed belonged to a people who disown.
إنها كانت من قوم كفرينIt was said to her [by Sulayman]: 'Enter the palace.'
قيل لها ٱدخلي ٱلصرحWhen she saw it, she took it for a pool of water, and bared her legs.
فلما رأته حسبته لجة وكشفت عن ساقيهاHe said [Sulayman]: 'It is a polished palace, made of crystal.'
قال إنه صرح ممرد من قواريرShe said [the Queen of Saba]: 'My Guardian, I have wronged myself, and I am true, with Sulayman, to God, Guardian of all beings.'
قالت رب إني ظلمت نفسي وأسلمت مع سليمن لله رب ٱلعلمينAnd We certainly sent to the Depleters [Thamud] their brother Salih: 'Obey God'; and behold, two camps quarreling.
ولقد أرسلنآ إلى ثمود أخاهم صلحا أن ٱعبدوا ٱلله فإذا هم فريقان يختصمونHe said [Salih]: 'O my people, why do you hasten evil before good? Will you not seek God's forgiveness, so that He may show you benevolence?'
قال يقوم لم تستعجلون بٱلسيئة قبل ٱلحسنة لولا تستغفرون ٱلله لعلكم ترحمونThey said [Thamud's people]: 'We see an evil omen in you and in those with you.'
قالوا ٱطيرنا بك وبمن معكHe said [Salih]: 'Your omen is with God;
قال طئركم عند ٱللهyou are rather a people being tried.'
بل أنتم قوم تفتنونAnd there were in the Capital nine individuals who spread corruption on the earth and set nothing right.
وكان في ٱلمدينة تسعة رهط يفسدون في ٱلأرض ولا يصلحونThey said: 'Swear to one another by God that we will attack him by night, him and his family, then we will certainly say to his legal guardian: We did not witness the annihilation of his family, and we are certainly truthful.'
قالوا تقاسموا بٱلله لنبيتنه وأهله ثم لنقولن لوليه ما شهدنا مهلك أهله وإنا لصدقونThey plotted a plot, and We plotted a plot, without their perceiving it.
ومكروا مكرا ومكرنا مكرا وهم لا يشعرونSo look at what was the outcome of their plot:
فٱنظر كيف كان عقبة مكرهمWe destroyed them, and their people, all together.
أنا دمرنهم وقومهم أجمعينSo there are their houses, deserted because of their injustice.
فتلك بيوتهم خاوية بما ظلمواIn that, there is indeed a sign for a people who know.
إن في ذلك لءاية لقوم يعلمونAnd We saved those who had believed and guarded themselves.
وأنجينا ٱلذين ءامنوا وكانوا يتقونAnd Lut, when he said to his people: 'Do you commit indecency while you see clearly?
ولوطا إذ قال لقومه أتأتون ٱلفحشة وأنتم تبصرونYou approach, out of desire, men, instead of women;
أئنكم لتأتون ٱلرجال شهوة من دون ٱلنسآءyou are rather a people who persist in ignorance.'
بل أنتم قوم تجهلونThe only response of his people was to say: 'Expel the family of Lut from your city;
فما كان جواب قومه إلآ أن قالوا أخرجوا ءال لوط من قريتكمthese are people who want to keep themselves pure.'
إنهم أناس يتطهرونSo We saved him, and his family, except his wife; We had determined that she would be among those who stayed behind.
فأنجينه وأهله إلا ٱمرأته قدرنها من ٱلغبرينAnd We rained down upon them a rain;
وأمطرنا عليهم مطراhow evil was the rain of those who had been warned!
فسآء مطر ٱلمنذرينSay: 'Praise be to God, and peace upon His obedient ones whom He has chosen.
قل ٱلحمد لله وسلم على عباده ٱلذين ٱصطفىIs God better, or what you associate?'
ءآلله خير أما يشركونIs it not He who created the heavens and the earth, and who sent down for you, from the sky, water by which We caused enclosed gardens full of delight to grow,
أمن خلق ٱلسموت وٱلأرض وأنزل لكم من ٱلسمآء مآء فأنبتنا به حدآئق ذات بهجةwithout it being possible for you to make their trees grow?
ما كان لكم أن تنبتوا شجرهآIs there a deity alongside God?
أءله مع ٱللهThey are rather a people who deviate.
بل هم قوم يعدلونIs it not He who made the earth a stable place, placed rivers within it, gave it firmly anchored mountains, and set between the two seas a barrier?
أمن جعل ٱلأرض قرارا وجعل خللهآ أنهرا وجعل لها روسي وجعل بين ٱلبحرين حاجزاIs there a deity alongside God?
أءله مع ٱللهBut most of them do not know.
بل أكثرهم لا يعلمونIs it not He who answers the one in distress, when he calls upon Him, who removes evil, and who makes you successors on the earth?
أمن يجيب ٱلمضطر إذا دعاه ويكشف ٱلسوء ويجعلكم خلفآء ٱلأرضIs there a deity alongside God?
أءله مع ٱللهHow little you remember!
قليلا ما تذكرونIs it not He who guides you in the darknesses of land and sea, and who sends the winds, which disperse, before His benevolence?
أمن يهديكم في ظلمت ٱلبر وٱلبحر ومن يرسل ٱلريح بشرا بين يدى رحمتهIs there a deity alongside God?
أءله مع ٱللهHow exalted is God above what they associate!
تعلى ٱلله عما يشركونIs it not He who originates creation, then remakes it, and who provides for you from the sky and the earth?
أمن يبدؤا ٱلخلق ثم يعيده ومن يرزقكم من ٱلسمآء وٱلأرضIs there a deity alongside God?
أءله مع ٱللهSay: 'Bring your proof, if you are truthful.'
قل هاتوا برهنكم إن كنتم صدقينSay: 'None, in the heavens and on the earth, knows what escapes the senses, except God;
قل لا يعلم من في ٱلسموت وٱلأرض ٱلغيب إلا ٱللهand they do not perceive when they will be resurrected.
وما يشعرون أيان يبعثونBut rather, their knowledge has reached its limit regarding the last life;
بل ٱدرك علمهم في ٱلءاخرةthey are rather in doubt about it, they are rather blind to it.
بل هم في شك منها بل هم منها عمونAnd those who disown said: "When we are earth, we and our ancestors, will we really be brought out?
وقال ٱلذين كفروا أءذا كنا تربا وءابآؤنآ أئنا لمخرجونWe have indeed been promised this, we and our ancestors, before;
لقد وعدنا هذا نحن وءابآؤنا من قبلthese are nothing but legends of the ancients.'
إن هذآ إلآ أسطير ٱلأولينSay: 'Travel the earth, and see what was the end of the severed.'
قل سيروا في ٱلأرض فٱنظروا كيف كان عقبة ٱلمجرمينAnd do not grieve for them, and do not be in distress because of what they plot.
ولا تحزن عليهم ولا تكن في ضيق مما يمكرونAnd they say: 'When then is this promise, if you are truthful?'
ويقولون متى هذا ٱلوعد إن كنتم صدقينSay: 'It may be that some of what you seek to hasten is very close behind you.'
قل عسى أن يكون ردف لكم بعض ٱلذي تستعجلونAnd your Guardian is indeed possessed of favor toward people,
وإن ربك لذو فضل على ٱلناسbut most of them do not acknowledge.
ولكن أكثرهم لا يشكرونAnd your Guardian certainly knows what their chests conceal and what they disclose.
وإن ربك ليعلم ما تكن صدورهم وما يعلنونAnd there is nothing hidden in the sky and the earth that is not in an explicit record.
وما من غآئبة في ٱلسمآء وٱلأرض إلا في كتب مبينThis Recitation indeed relates to the Sons of Israel most of what they differ about.
إن هذا ٱلقرءان يقص على بني إسرءيل أكثر ٱلذي هم فيه يختلفونAnd it is indeed guidance and benevolence for the believers.
وإنه لهدى ورحمة للمؤمنينYour Guardian indeed judges between them by His judgment,
إن ربك يقضي بينهم بحكمهand it is He, the All-Powerful, the All-Knowing.
وهو ٱلعزيز ٱلعليمSo rely upon God,
فتوكل على ٱللهfor you are indeed upon the explicit truth.
إنك على ٱلحق ٱلمبينYou do not make the dead hear, nor do you make the deaf hear the call, when they turn their backs in retreat.
إنك لا تسمع ٱلموتى ولا تسمع ٱلصم ٱلدعآء إذا ولوا مدبرينNor are you the one who guides the blind out of their error;
ومآ أنت بهدي ٱلعمي عن ضللتهمyou make hear only him who believes in Our signs, and those are true to God alone.
إن تسمع إلا من يؤمن بايتنا فهم مسلمونAnd when the word is fulfilled against them, We will bring forth for them a conscious being, from the earth, who will speak to them,
وإذا وقع ٱلقول عليهم أخرجنا لهم دآبة من ٱلأرض تكلمهمbecause people had no certainty regarding Our signs.
أن ٱلناس كانوا بايتنا لا يوقنونAnd the day when We gather, from every community, a crowd among those who deny Our signs, they will be marshaled in ranks,
ويوم نحشر من كل أمة فوجا ممن يكذب بايتنا فهم يوزعونuntil, when they arrive, it will be said: 'Did you deny My signs, without having encompassed them in knowledge?
حتى إذا جآءو قال أكذبتم بايتي ولم تحيطوا بها علماOr what then were you doing?'
أماذا كنتم تعملونAnd the word will be fulfilled against them because of their injustice, and they will not speak.
ووقع ٱلقول عليهم بما ظلموا فهم لا ينطقونDo they not see that We made the night for them to rest in, and the day for them to see clearly?
ألم يروا أنا جعلنا ٱليل ليسكنوا فيه وٱلنهار مبصراIn that, there are indeed signs for a people who believe.
إن في ذلك لءايت لقوم يؤمنونAnd the day the Horn is blown, those in the heavens and those on the earth will be seized with terror, except him whom God wills to spare;
ويوم ينفخ في ٱلصور ففزع من في ٱلسموت ومن في ٱلأرض إلا من شآء ٱللهand all will come to Him, humbled.
وكل أتوه دخرينAnd you see the mountains, you think them fixed, while they pass as the clouds pass:
وترى ٱلجبال تحسبها جامدة وهي تمر مر ٱلسحابthe work of God, who has perfected everything.
صنع ٱلله ٱلذي أتقن كل شىءHe is indeed Informed of what you do.
إنه خبير بما تفعلونWhoever comes with good will have better than it, and those will be, that day, safe from terror.
من جآء بٱلحسنة فله خير منها وهم من فزع يومئذ ءامنونAnd whoever comes with evil, then their faces will be tumbled into the Fire.
ومن جآء بٱلسيئة فكبت وجوههم في ٱلنارWill you be recompensed otherwise than according to what you used to do?
هل تجزون إلا ما كنتم تعملون[The Prophet speaks]: 'I have only been ordered to obey the Guardian of this land, which He has made inviolable, and to whom belongs everything;
إنمآ أمرت أن أعبد رب هذه ٱلبلدة ٱلذي حرمها وله كل شىءand I have been ordered to be among those true to God alone, and to recite the Recitation.'
وأمرت أن أكون من ٱلمسلمين وأن أتلوا ٱلقرءانWhoever is guided, is guided only for himself,
فمن ٱهتدى فإنما يهتدي لنفسهand whoever goes astray, say then: 'I am only one of the warners.'
ومن ضل فقل إنمآ أنا من ٱلمنذرينAnd say: 'Praise be to God; He will show you His signs, and you will recognize them.'
وقل ٱلحمد لله سيريكم ءايته فتعرفونهاAnd your Guardian is not heedless of what you do.
وما ربك بغفل عما تعملون
