Sourate Luqman (31) with hamza shown

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif, Lam, Mim.i 1

بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم الم

These are the signs of the Scripture full of wisdom, a guidance and benevolence for the doers of good, those who maintain the Contact, give the purifying alms, and who have certainty of the Hereafter.i 4

تلك ءايت ٱلكتب ٱلحكيم هدى ورحمة للمحسنين ٱلذين يقيمون ٱلصلوة ويؤتون ٱلزكوة وهم بٱلءاخرة هم يوقنون

Those are upon guidance from their Guardian, 5

أولئك على هدى من ربهم

and it is they who are successful. 5

وأولئك هم ٱلمفلحون

And among people is he who buys distracting talk, to lead [others] astray from the way of God without knowledge, and to take it in mockery; 6

ومن ٱلناس من يشتري لهو ٱلحديث ليضل عن سبيل ٱلله بغير علم ويتخذها هزوا

those will have a humiliating punishment. 6

أولئك لهم عذاب مهين

And when Our signs are recited to him, he turns away in arrogance, as though he had not heard them, as though there were deafness in his ears: 7

وإذا تتلى عليه ءايتنا ولى مستكبرا كأن لم يسمعها كأن في أذنيه وقرا

so give him news of a painful punishment. 7

فبشره بعذاب أليم

Those who believed and did righteous deeds will have the gardens of blessing, abiding therein forever —i 9

إن ٱلذين ءامنوا وعملوا ٱلصلحت لهم جنت ٱلنعيم خلدين فيها

a true promise of God; 9

وعد ٱلله حقا

and He is the All-Powerful, the Wise. 9

وهو ٱلعزيز ٱلحكيم

He created the heavens without pillars 10

خلق ٱلسموت بغير عمد

that you can see; 10

ترونها

and He placed on the earth firm anchors, lest it shake with you, and He scattered upon it every kind of living being;i 10

وألقى في ٱلأرض روسي أن تميد بكم وبث فيها من كل دآبة

and We sent down water from the sky, and caused every generous kind [of plant] to grow in it. 10

وأنزلنا من ٱلسمآء مآء فأنبتنا فيها من كل زوج كريم

This is God's creation: 11

هذا خلق ٱلله

so show Me what those you obey besides Him have created. 11

فأروني ماذا خلق ٱلذين من دونه

The wrongdoers are rather in manifest error. 11

بل ٱلظلمون في ضلل مبين

And We certainly gave Luqman wisdom: "Be grateful to God"; 12

ولقد ءاتينا لقمن ٱلحكمة أن ٱشكر لله

and whoever is grateful is grateful only for himself, 12

ومن يشكر فإنما يشكر لنفسه

and whoever denies [that blessing] — God is self-sufficient, praiseworthy. 12

ومن كفر فإن ٱلله غني حميد

And [recall] when Luqman said to his son, while exhorting him, "O my son, do not associate [any partner] with God; 13

وإذ قال لقمن لٱبنه وهو يعظه يبنى لا تشرك بٱلله

association is certainly a great injustice." 13

إن ٱلشرك لظلم عظيم

And We enjoined upon man [kindness] toward his parents — 14

ووصينا ٱلإنسن بولديه

his mother carried him, weakness upon weakness, 14

حملته أمه وهنا على وهن

and his weaning is completed within the two years that follow — :i 14

وفصله في عامين

"Be grateful to Me and to your parents; 14

أن ٱشكر لي ولولديك

to Me is the final return." 14

إلى ٱلمصير

But if they press you to associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them; 15

وإن جهداك على أن تشرك بي ما ليس لك به علم فلا تطعهما

but accompany them in the present life in a recognized manner,i 15

وصاحبهما في ٱلدنيا معروفا

and follow the path of one who turns to Me [in repentance]; 15

وٱتبع سبيل من أناب إلى

then to Me is your return, and I will inform you of what you used to do. 15

ثم إلى مرجعكم فأنبئكم بما كنتم تعملون

"O my son, indeed if it should be the weight of a mustard seed, and should be in a rock, or in the heavens, or in the earth, God will bring it forth, 16

يبنى إنهآ إن تك مثقال حبة من خردل فتكن في صخرة أو في ٱلسموت أو في ٱلأرض يأت بها ٱلله

for God is Subtle, Aware. 16

إن ٱلله لطيف خبير

O my son, maintain the Contact, 17

يبنى أقم ٱلصلوة

enjoin what is recognized,i 17

وأمر بٱلمعروف

forbid what is disavowed,i 17

وٱنه عن ٱلمنكر

and be patient over what befalls you: 17

وٱصبر على مآ أصابك

that is indeed among matters requiring resolve. 17

إن ذلك من عزم ٱلأمور

And do not turn your cheek away from people [in disdain], 18

ولا تصعر خدك للناس

nor walk upon the earth exultantly: 18

ولا تمش في ٱلأرض مرحا

God certainly does not love any arrogant boaster. 18

إن ٱلله لا يحب كل مختال فخور

Be moderate in your pace, 19

وٱقصد في مشيك

and lower your voice: 19

وٱغضض من صوتك

for the least recognizable of voices is the voice of donkeys."i 19

إن أنكر ٱلأصوت لصوت ٱلحمير

Have you not seen that God has subjected to you what is in the heavens and what is on the earth, and has completed His favors upon you, apparent and hidden? 20

ألم تروا أن ٱلله سخر لكم ما في ٱلسموت وما في ٱلأرض وأسبغ عليكم نعمه ظهرة وباطنة

And among people is he who disputes about God without knowledge, without guidance, and without an illuminating Scripture.i 20

ومن ٱلناس من يجدل في ٱلله بغير علم ولا هدى ولا كتب منير

And when it is said to them, "Follow what God has sent down," 21

وإذا قيل لهم ٱتبعوا مآ أنزل ٱلله

they say, "We rather follow what we found our ancestors upon." 21

قالوا بل نتبع ما وجدنا عليه ءابآءنآ

What, even if the Diverter was calling them to the punishment of the Blaze?i 21

أولو كان ٱلشيطن يدعوهم إلى عذاب ٱلسعير

And whoever devotes himself to God with integrity, while being virtuous, has certainly grasped the firmest handhold;i 22

ومن يسلم وجهه إلى ٱلله وهو محسن فقد ٱستمسك بٱلعروة ٱلوثقى

and to God is the outcome of all things. 22

وإلى ٱلله عقبة ٱلأمور

And whoever denies, let not his denial grieve you: 23

ومن كفر فلا يحزنك كفره

to Us is their return, and We will then inform them of what they did — 23

إلينا مرجعهم فننبئهم بما عملوا

God is certainly All-Knowing of what is in the chests. 23

إن ٱلله عليم بذات ٱلصدور

We grant them a brief enjoyment, then We will compel them toward a harsh punishment. 24

نمتعهم قليلا ثم نضطرهم إلى عذاب غليظ

And if you ask them, "Who created the heavens and the earth?" they will certainly say, "God"; 25

ولئن سألتهم من خلق ٱلسموت وٱلأرض ليقولن ٱلله

say, "Praise be to God!" 25

قل ٱلحمد لله

But most of them do not know. 25

بل أكثرهم لا يعلمون

To God belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth; 26

لله ما في ٱلسموت وٱلأرض

God is certainly self-sufficient, praiseworthy. 26

إن ٱلله هو ٱلغني ٱلحميد

And if whatever trees are on the earth were pens, and the sea, extended by seven seas after it, [were ink], the words of God would not be exhausted: 27

ولو أنما في ٱلأرض من شجرة أقلم وٱلبحر يمده من بعده سبعة أبحر ما نفدت كلمت ٱلله

God is certainly All-Powerful, Wise. 27

إن ٱلله عزيز حكيم

Your creation and your deployment are but as [that of] a single Self;i 28

ما خلقكم ولا بعثكم إلا كنفس وحدة

God is certainly the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. 28

إن ٱلله سميع بصير

Have you not seen that God makes the night pass into the day, and makes the day pass into the night, and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running to an appointed term, and that God is Aware of what you do? 29

ألم تر أن ٱلله يولج ٱليل في ٱلنهار ويولج ٱلنهار في ٱليل وسخر ٱلشمس وٱلقمر كل يجري إلى أجل مسمى وأن ٱلله بما تعملون خبير

That is because God is the Truth, and what you invoke besides Him is falsehood, and because God is the Most High, the Great.i 30

ذلك بأن ٱلله هو ٱلحق وأن ما يدعون من دونه ٱلبطل وأن ٱلله هو ٱلعلي ٱلكبير

Have you not seen that the ships sail on the sea by the favor of God, that He may show you some of His signs? 31

ألم تر أن ٱلفلك تجري في ٱلبحر بنعمت ٱلله ليريكم من ءايته

There are certainly in that signs for every steadfast, grateful being. 31

إن في ذلك لءايت لكل صبار شكور

And when a wave covers them like shadows, they call upon God, devoting the Law exclusively to Him;i 32

وإذا غشيهم موج كٱلظلل دعوا ٱلله مخلصين له ٱلدين

but when He brings them safely to land, some of them remain moderate [in gratitude]; 32

فلما نجىهم إلى ٱلبر فمنهم مقتصد

and none denies Our signs except every treacherous, great denier. 32

وما يجحد بايتنآ إلا كل ختار كفور

O mankind, be mindful of your Guardian, and fear a day when no father will avail his child, nor any child avail his father at all. 33

يأيها ٱلناس ٱتقوا ربكم وٱخشوا يوما لا يجزي والد عن ولده ولا مولود هو جاز عن والده شيا

God's promise is certainly true: 33

إن وعد ٱلله حق

so do not let the present life deceive you, 33

فلا تغرنكم ٱلحيوة ٱلدنيا

and do not let the great deceiver deceive you about God. 33

ولا يغرنكم بٱلله ٱلغرور

God certainly has knowledge of the Hour, 34

إن ٱلله عنده علم ٱلساعة

and sends down the rain, 34

وينزل ٱلغيث

and knows what is in the wombs; 34

ويعلم ما في ٱلأرحام

and no Self knows what it will earn tomorrow, 34

وما تدري نفس ماذا تكسب غدا

and no Self knows in what land it will die; 34

وما تدري نفس بأى أرض تموت

God is certainly All-Knowing, Aware. 34

إن ٱلله عليم خبير
