Sourate Ya-Sin (36) with hamza shown

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Ya-Sin.i 1

بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم يس

By the Recitation full of wisdom, you are truly among the envoys,i 4

وٱلقرءان ٱلحكيم إنك لمن ٱلمرسلين على صرط مستقيم

a revelation sent down from the All-Powerful, the Benevolent, so that you may warn a people whose ancestors were not warned, and who are therefore heedless.i 6

تنزيل ٱلعزيز ٱلرحيم لتنذر قوما مآ أنذر ءابآؤهم فهم غفلون

The verdict has proven true against most of them: they do not believe. 7

لقد حق ٱلقول على أكثرهم فهم لا يؤمنون

We have placed shackles on their necks, reaching up to their chins, so that their heads are held back. 8

إنا جعلنا في أعنقهم أغللا فهي إلى ٱلأذقان فهم مقمحون

And We have placed a barrier before them and a barrier behind them, and We have covered them over, so they do not see. 9

وجعلنا من بين أيديهم سدا ومن خلفهم سدا فأغشينهم فهم لا يبصرون

It is the same to them whether you warn them or do not warn them: they do not believe. 10

وسوآء عليهم ءأنذرتهم أم لم تنذرهم لا يؤمنون

You can only warn usefully one who follows the Reminder and fears the All-Benevolent unseen: give him good news of forgiveness and a generous reward. 11

إنما تنذر من ٱتبع ٱلذكر وخشي ٱلرحمن بٱلغيب فبشره بمغفرة وأجر كريم

It is We, We alone, who give life to the dead, and We record what they put forth and the traces they leave behind. 12

إنا نحن نحي ٱلموتى ونكتب ما قدموا وءاثرهم

And everything, We have counted it in a clear register. 12

وكل شىء أحصينه في إمام مبين

Set before them, as an example, the people of the town: when the envoys came to it, when We sent two [messengers] to them, and they called them liars; so We reinforced them with a third, and they said: "We are indeed sent to you." 14

وٱضرب لهم مثلا أصحب ٱلقرية إذ جآءها ٱلمرسلون إذ أرسلنآ إليهم ٱثنين فكذبوهما فعززنا بثالث فقالوا إنآ إليكم مرسلون

They said: "You are nothing but humans like us; the All-Benevolent has sent nothing down; you are only lying." 15

قالوا مآ أنتم إلا بشر مثلنا ومآ أنزل ٱلرحمن من شىء إن أنتم إلا تكذبون

They said: "Our Guardian knows that we are indeed sent to you; and it is incumbent upon us only to deliver the message clearly." 17

قالوا ربنا يعلم إنآ إليكم لمرسلون وما علينآ إلا ٱلبلغ ٱلمبين

They said: "We see in you a bad omen. If you do not stop, we will surely banish you, and a painful punishment from us will touch you." 18

قالوا إنا تطيرنا بكم لئن لم تنتهوا لنرجمنكم وليمسنكم منا عذاب أليم

They replied: "Your omen lies with yourselves. Is it because you are reminded [of the truth]? 19

قالوا طئركم معكم أئن ذكرتم

Rather, you are a people who overstep all bounds." 19

بل أنتم قوم مسرفون

And a man came hurrying from the farthest end of the Capital. 20

وجآء من أقصا ٱلمدينة رجل يسعى

He said: "O my people, follow the envoys; follow those who ask no reward of you, and who are rightly guided. 21

قال يقوم ٱتبعوا ٱلمرسلين ٱتبعوا من لا يسلكم أجرا وهم مهتدون

And why should I not obey the One who created me, and to whom you will be brought back? 22

وما لي لآ أعبد ٱلذي فطرني وإليه ترجعون

Should I take, besides Him, deities? If the All-Benevolent intends harm for me, their intercession will not avail me at all, nor will they save me. 23

ءأتخذ من دونه ءالهة إن يردن ٱلرحمن بضر لا تغن عني شفعتهم شيا ولا ينقذون

I would then truly be in manifest error. 24

إني إذا لفي ضلل مبين

I have indeed believed in your Guardian: so listen to me." 25

إني ءامنت بربكم فٱسمعون

It was said [to him]: "Enter the Garden." 26

قيل ٱدخل ٱلجنة

He said: "If only my people knew for what my Guardian has forgiven me, and made me one of the honored ones!" 27

قال يليت قومي يعلمون بما غفر لي ربي وجعلني من ٱلمكرمين

And We did not send down upon his people, after him, any army from the sky, nor did We need to send one down. 28

ومآ أنزلنا على قومه من بعده من جند من ٱلسمآء وما كنا منزلين

It was but a single cry, and there they were, extinguished. 29

إن كانت إلا صيحة وحدة فإذا هم خمدون

What regret for the obedient ones! 30

يحسرة على ٱلعباد

No messenger ever came to them but they mocked him. 30

ما يأتيهم من رسول إلا كانوا به يستهزءون

Do they not see how many generations We destroyed before them, [generations] that will not return to them? 31

ألم يروا كم أهلكنا قبلهم من ٱلقرون أنهم إليهم لا يرجعون

All of them, every single one, will be gathered, brought before Us. 32

وإن كل لما جميع لدينا محضرون

A sign for them: the dead earth, which We bring to life, and from which We bring forth grain, so that they eat from it. 33

وءاية لهم ٱلأرض ٱلميتة أحيينها وأخرجنا منها حبا فمنه يأكلون

And We placed therein gardens of palm trees and vines, and We caused springs to gush forth in it, so that they may eat from its fruit — and it was not their hands that produced it. 35

وجعلنا فيها جنت من نخيل وأعنب وفجرنا فيها من ٱلعيون ليأكلوا من ثمره وما عملته أيديهم

Will they not then be grateful? 35

أفلا يشكرون

Glory be to the One who created all the pairs, from what the earth grows, from themselves, and from what they do not know. 36

سبحن ٱلذي خلق ٱلأزوج كلها مما تنبت ٱلأرض ومن أنفسهم ومما لا يعلمون

A sign for them: the night, from which We strip away the day, and there they are, plunged into darkness. 37

وءاية لهم ٱليل نسلخ منه ٱلنهار فإذا هم مظلمون

And the sun glides along a stable orbit that is its own and never varies. 38

وٱلشمس تجري لمستقر لها

That is the measure set by the All-Powerful, the All-Knowing.i 38

ذلك تقدير ٱلعزيز ٱلعليم

And the moon, We have set for it stations, until it returns like an old curved palm-stalk. 39

وٱلقمر قدرنه منازل حتى عاد كٱلعرجون ٱلقديم

It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor for the night to outrun the day. 40

لا ٱلشمس ينبغي لهآ أن تدرك ٱلقمر ولا ٱليل سابق ٱلنهار

Each floats along in an orbit. 40

وكل في فلك يسبحون

A sign for them: We carried their offspring in the laden ship, and We created for them, in its likeness, what they ride.i 42

وءاية لهم أنا حملنا ذريتهم في ٱلفلك ٱلمشحون وخلقنا لهم من مثله ما يركبون

And if We willed, We would drown them; then there would be no help for them, nor would they be saved, except by a benevolence from Us, and enjoyment for a time. 44

وإن نشأ نغرقهم فلا صريخ لهم ولا هم ينقذون إلا رحمة منا ومتعا إلى حين

And when it is said to them: "Guard yourselves against what is before you and what is behind you, so that you may receive benevolence," 45

وإذا قيل لهم ٱتقوا ما بين أيديكم وما خلفكم لعلكم ترحمون

not a single sign, among the signs of their Guardian, comes to them but they turn away from it. 46

وما تأتيهم من ءاية من ءايت ربهم إلا كانوا عنها معرضين

And when it is said to them: "Spend from what God has provided you," those who deny say to those who have believed: "Shall we feed one whom God, if He willed, would feed Himself? You are only in manifest error." 47

وإذا قيل لهم أنفقوا مما رزقكم ٱلله قال ٱلذين كفروا للذين ءامنوا أنطعم من لو يشآء ٱلله أطعمه إن أنتم إلا في ضلل مبين

And they say: "When will this promise be, if you are truthful?" 48

ويقولون متى هذا ٱلوعد إن كنتم صدقين

They await nothing but a single cry that will seize them while they are disputing with one another. 49

ما ينظرون إلا صيحة وحدة تأخذهم وهم يخصمون

Then they will not be able to make any bequest, nor will they return to their people. 50

فلا يستطيعون توصية ولآ إلى أهلهم يرجعون

And the Trumpet will be blown, and there they are, rushing from their graves to their Guardian. 51

ونفخ في ٱلصور فإذا هم من ٱلأجداث إلى ربهم ينسلون

They will say: "Woe to us! Who has raised us up from our resting place? 52

قالوا يويلنا من بعثنا من مرقدنا

This is what the All-Benevolent promised, and the envoys spoke the truth." 52

هذا ما وعد ٱلرحمن وصدق ٱلمرسلون

It will be but a single cry, and there they are, all together, brought before Us. 53

إن كانت إلا صيحة وحدة فإذا هم جميع لدينا محضرون

This day, no Self will be wronged in the least, and you will be repaid only for what you used to do. 54

فٱليوم لا تظلم نفس شيا ولا تجزون إلا ما كنتم تعملون

The companions of the Garden will, this day, be occupied in delight, they and their spouses, in the shade, reclining upon couches. 56

إن أصحب ٱلجنة ٱليوم في شغل فكهون هم وأزوجهم في ظلل على ٱلأرآئك متكون

They will have fruit therein. 57

لهم فيها فكهة

And they will have whatever they call for. Peace! 58

ولهم ما يدعون سلم

A word from a Benevolent Guardian. 58

قولا من رب رحيم

"Stand apart today, O severed! 59

وٱمتزوا ٱليوم أيها ٱلمجرمون

Did I not enjoin upon you, O children of Adam, not to obey the Diverter — he is indeed a manifest enemy to you — and to obey Me alone?i 61

ألم أعهد إليكم يبني ءادم أن لا تعبدوا ٱلشيطن إنه لكم عدو مبين وأن ٱعبدوني

This is a straight path. 61

هذا صرط مستقيم

Yet he did lead astray a great many of you. 62

ولقد أضل منكم جبلا كثيرا

Did you not then reason? 62

أفلم تكونوا تعقلون

This is Jahannam, which you were promised. Burn in it today, for having concealed [the truth]." 64

هذه جهنم ٱلتي كنتم توعدون ٱصلوها ٱليوم بما كنتم تكفرون

This day, We seal their mouths; their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will bear witness to what they used to earn. 65

ٱليوم نختم على أفوههم وتكلمنآ أيديهم وتشهد أرجلهم بما كانوا يكسبون

And if We willed, We would blot out their eyes; then they would rush toward the path, but how would they see? 66

ولو نشآء لطمسنا على أعينهم فٱستبقوا ٱلصرط فأنى يبصرون

And if We willed, We would freeze them in their places, and they would be able neither to go forward nor to return. 67

ولو نشآء لمسخنهم على مكانتهم فما ٱستطعوا مضيا ولا يرجعون

And whomever We grant long life, We reverse in creation. 68

ومن نعمره ننكسه في ٱلخلق

Will they not then reason?i 68

أفلا يعقلون

We did not teach him beguiling rhetoric; it does not befit him.i 69

وما علمنه ٱلشعر وما ينبغي له

It is nothing but a Reminder and a clear Recitation, so as to warn whoever is alive, and so that the verdict may prove true against those who deny.i 70

إن هو إلا ذكر وقرءان مبين لينذر من كان حيا ويحق ٱلقول على ٱلكفرين

Do they not see that We have created for them, from what Our hands have made, livestock which they own? 71

أولم يروا أنا خلقنا لهم مما عملت أيدينآ أنعما فهم لها ملكون

We have made them subservient to them: some serve as their mounts, and some they eat. 72

وذللنها لهم فمنها ركوبهم ومنها يأكلون

And they have in them benefits and drinks. 73

ولهم فيها منفع ومشارب

Will they not then be grateful? 73

أفلا يشكرون

And they have taken, besides God, deities, hoping to be helped. They cannot help them, though they are, for them, a mobilized army. 75

وٱتخذوا من دون ٱلله ءالهة لعلهم ينصرون لا يستطيعون نصرهم وهم لهم جند محضرون

So let their words not grieve you. 76

فلا يحزنك قولهم

We know what they conceal and what they proclaim. 76

إنا نعلم ما يسرون وما يعلنون

Does man not see that We created him from a drop of fluid, and yet he is a manifest disputer? 77

أولم ير ٱلإنسن أنا خلقنه من نطفة فإذا هو خصيم مبين

He sets forth for Us an example, forgetting his own creation. 78

وضرب لنا مثلا ونسي خلقه

He says: "Who will give life to the bones once they are decayed?" 78

قال من يحي ٱلعظم وهي رميم

Say: "He who brought them into being the first time will give them life; and He is All-Knowing of all creation." 79

قل يحييها ٱلذي أنشأهآ أول مرة وهو بكل خلق عليم

He who made for you fire out of the green tree, and see, you kindle from it. 80

ٱلذي جعل لكم من ٱلشجر ٱلأخضر نارا فإذآ أنتم منه توقدون

Is not the One who created the heavens and the earth able to create the like of them? 81

أوليس ٱلذي خلق ٱلسموت وٱلأرض بقدر على أن يخلق مثلهم

Yes indeed! And He is the Creator, the All-Knowing. 81

بلى وهو ٱلخلق ٱلعليم

His command, when He wills a thing, is only to say to it: "Be," 82

إنمآ أمره إذآ أراد شيا أن يقول له كن

and it is. 82

فيكون

So glory be to the One in whose hand is the dominion of all things, and to whom you will be brought back. 83

فسبحن ٱلذي بيده ملكوت كل شىء وإليه ترجعون
