Peace upon the Envoys
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. By those that range themselves in ranks, by those who drive back with force, by those who recite the Reminder: your deity is surely one,
بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم وٱلصفت صفا فٱلزجرت زجرا فٱلتليت ذكرا إن إلهكم لوحدGuardian of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, and Guardian of the risings [of the sun].
رب ٱلسموت وٱلأرض وما بينهما ورب ٱلمشرقWe have adorned the nearest heaven with the ornament of the stars,
إنا زينا ٱلسمآء ٱلدنيا بزينة ٱلكواكبand guarded it from every rebellious Diverter,
وحفظا من كل شيطن ماردwho cannot listen to the sublime assembly, and are pelted from every side,
لا يسمعون إلى ٱلملإ ٱلأعلى ويقذفون من كل جانبdriven off violently;
دحوراand they have an unceasing punishment — except him who snatches a fleeting glimpse: a piercing flame then pursues him.
ولهم عذاب واصب إلا من خطف ٱلخطفة فأتبعه شهاب ثاقبAsk them then: are they harder to create, or those We have created?
فٱستفتهم أهم أشد خلقا أم من خلقنآWe created them from a clinging clay.
إنا خلقنهم من طين لازبBut you marvel, while they mock;
بل عجبت ويسخرونand when they are reminded, they do not remember;
وإذا ذكروا لا يذكرونand when they see a sign, they redouble their mockery,
وإذا رأوا ءاية يستسخرونand say: "This is nothing but a plain illusion. When we are dead, earth and bones, shall we be resurrected? And our earliest forefathers too?"
وقالوا إن هذآ إلا سحر مبين أءذا متنا وكنا ترابا وعظما أءنا لمبعوثون أوءابآؤنا ٱلأولونSay: "Yes, and you will be humiliated."
قل نعم وأنتم دخرونIt will be but a single rumbling blast, and there they are, looking on,
فإنما هي زجرة وحدة فإذا هم ينظرونsaying: "Woe to us, this is the Day of Retribution!"
وقالوا يويلنا هذا يوم ٱلدين"This is the Day of Separation, which you used to deny."
هذا يوم ٱلفصل ٱلذي كنتم به تكذبون"Gather those who did wrong, their spouses, and what they used to obey besides God, then guide them to the path of the Blaze,
ٱحشروا ٱلذين ظلموا وأزوجهم وما كانوا يعبدون من دون ٱلله فٱهدوهم إلى صرط ٱلجحيمand hold them: they are to be questioned."
وقفوهم إنهم مسولون"What is wrong with you, that you do not help one another?"
ما لكم لا تناصرونNo, that day, they are utterly submissive.
بل هم ٱليوم مستسلمونAnd they turn to one another, questioning each other.
وأقبل بعضهم على بعض يتسآءلونThey say: "It was you who used to come at us from the right."
قالوا إنكم كنتم تأتوننا عن ٱليمينThey answer: "No, it was you who were not believers;
قالوا بل لم تكونوا مؤمنينand we had no authority over you — you were rather a people who exceeded all measure.
وما كان لنا عليكم من سلطن بل كنتم قوما طغينSo our Guardian's word has proven true against us: we shall indeed taste [the punishment]. We misled you — we ourselves were misled."
فحق علينا قول ربنآ إنا لذآئقون فأغوينكم إنا كنا غوينThat day, they are all partners in the punishment.
فإنهم يومئذ في ٱلعذاب مشتركونThis is indeed how We deal with the severed.
إنا كذلك نفعل بٱلمجرمينSurely, whenever it was said to them, "There is no deity but God," they would swell with arrogance and say: "Shall we abandon our deities for a deranged beguiling rhetorician?"
إنهم كانوا إذا قيل لهم لآ إله إلا ٱلله يستكبرون ويقولون أئنا لتاركوا ءالهتنا لشاعر مجنونNo, he came with the truth, and affirmed the envoys.
بل جآء بٱلحق وصدق ٱلمرسلينYou will surely taste the painful punishment,
إنكم لذآئقوا ٱلعذاب ٱلأليمand you will be recompensed only for what you used to do — except the purified obedient ones of God:
وما تجزون إلا ما كنتم تعملون إلا عباد ٱلله ٱلمخلصينthose have a known provision, fruits,
أولئك لهم رزق معلوم فوكهand they are honored in the Gardens of bliss, on couches facing one another.
وهم مكرمون في جنت ٱلنعيم على سرر متقبلينA cup will be passed among them from a [pure] spring, white, delightful for those who drink it, causing no headache and no intoxication,
يطاف عليهم بكأس من معين بيضآء لذة للشربين لا فيها غول ولا هم عنها ينزفونand beside them will be companions of reserved, clear gaze, as though they were well-guarded eggs.
وعندهم قصرت ٱلطرف عين كأنهن بيض مكنونAnd they turn to one another, questioning each other.
فأقبل بعضهم على بعض يتسآءلونOne of them says: "I had a companion who used to say: 'Are you truly one of those who hold this to be true? When we are dead, earth and bones, shall we truly be judged?'"
قال قآئل منهم إني كان لي قرين يقول أءنك لمن ٱلمصدقين أءذا متنا وكنا ترابا وعظما أءنا لمدينونHe says: "Do you wish to look?" So he looked, and saw him in the midst of the Blaze.
قال هل أنتم مطلعون فٱطلع فرءاه في سوآء ٱلجحيمHe says: "By God, you nearly caused my ruin; and were it not for my Guardian's blessing, I would have been among those brought forth [for punishment].
قال تٱلله إن كدت لتردين ولولا نعمة ربي لكنت من ٱلمحضرينAre we not dead, except our first death, and shall we not be punished?"
أفما نحن بميتين إلا موتتنا ٱلأولى وما نحن بمعذبينThis is surely the immense triumph!
إن هذا لهو ٱلفوز ٱلعظيمIt is for such an outcome that those who act should act.
لمثل هذا فليعمل ٱلعملونIs that a better welcome, or the tree of Zaqqoum?
أذلك خير نزلا أم شجرة ٱلزقومWe have made it a trial for the wrongdoers:
إنا جعلنها فتنة للظلمينit is indeed a tree that grows at the root of the Blaze, whose fruits resemble the heads of Diverters.
إنها شجرة تخرج في أصل ٱلجحيم طلعها كأنه رءوس ٱلشيطينThey will eat from it and fill their bellies with it; then on top of it they will have a mixture of scalding water.
فإنهم لءاكلون منها فمالون منها ٱلبطون ثم إن لهم عليها لشوبا من حميمThen their return will surely be to the Blaze.
ثم إن مرجعهم لإلى ٱلجحيمThey found their ancestors astray, and rushed headlong in their footsteps.
إنهم ألفوا ءابآءهم ضآلين فهم على ءاثرهم يهرعونAnd indeed, before them, most of the earlier peoples had gone astray,
ولقد ضل قبلهم أكثر ٱلأولينand We had certainly sent warners among them.
ولقد أرسلنا فيهم منذرينSo see what was the end of those who were warned — except the purified obedient ones of God.
فٱنظر كيف كان عقبة ٱلمنذرين إلا عباد ٱلله ٱلمخلصينAnd Nuh indeed called upon Us,
ولقد نادىنا نوحand what an excellent Responder We are!
فلنعم ٱلمجيبونWe saved him and his household from the immense distress,
ونجينه وأهله من ٱلكرب ٱلعظيمand We made his offspring the ones who endured.
وجعلنا ذريته هم ٱلباقينAnd We left upon him, among later generations:
وتركنا عليه في ٱلءاخرين"Peace upon Nuh, among all beings!"
سلم على نوح في ٱلعلمينThus indeed do We recompense those who do good.
إنا كذلك نجزي ٱلمحسنينHe was indeed among Our believing obedient ones.
إنه من عبادنا ٱلمؤمنينThen We drowned the others.
ثم أغرقنا ٱلءاخرينAnd Ibrahim was surely of his [spiritual] line, when he came to his Guardian with a sound core, when he said to his father and his people: "What do you obey?
وإن من شيعته لإبرهيم إذ جآء ربه بقلب سليم إذ قال لأبيه وقومه ماذا تعبدونIs it a lie — do you desire deities besides God?
أئفكا ءالهة دون ٱلله تريدونWhat then do you think of the Guardian of all beings?"
فما ظنكم برب ٱلعلمينHe cast a glance at the stars, and said: "I am unwell"; so they turned away from him, departing.
فنظر نظرة في ٱلنجوم فقال إني سقيم فتولوا عنه مدبرينThen he stole away to their deities, and said: "Do you not eat? What is wrong with you, that you do not speak?"
فراغ إلى ءالهتهم فقال ألا تأكلون ما لكم لا تنطقونThen he turned upon them, striking with his right hand; then [his people] came rushing toward him.
فراغ عليهم ضربا بٱليمين فأقبلوا إليه يزفونHe said: "Do you obey what you carve, when God created you and what you make?"
قال أتعبدون ما تنحتون وٱلله خلقكم وما تعملونThey said: "Build him a structure, and cast him into the Blaze!" They intended a scheme against him, but We made them the lowest.
قالوا ٱبنوا له بنينا فألقوه في ٱلجحيم فأرادوا به كيدا فجعلنهم ٱلأسفلينAnd he said: "I am going to my Guardian; He will guide me.
وقال إني ذاهب إلى ربي سيهدينMy Guardian, grant me [a child] among the righteous."
رب هب لي من ٱلصلحينSo We gave him the good news of a reflective boy.
فبشرنه بغلم حليمAnd when he reached the age of walking with him, he said: "O my son, I see in a dream that I am sacrificing you; consider, then, what you think."
فلما بلغ معه ٱلسعي قال يبنى إني أرى في ٱلمنام أني أذبحك فٱنظر ماذا ترىHe said: "O my father, do what you are commanded;
قال يأبت ٱفعل ما تؤمرyou will find me, if God wills, among the patient."
ستجدني إن شآء ٱلله من ٱلصبرينAnd when both of them had become true to God alone, and he had laid him down on his forehead, We called out to him: "O Ibrahim, you have indeed confirmed the vision."
فلمآ أسلما وتله للجبين وندينه أن يإبرهيم قد صدقت ٱلرءيآThus indeed do We recompense those who do good.
إنا كذلك نجزي ٱلمحسنينThis was surely the manifest testing.
إن هذا لهو ٱلبلؤا ٱلمبينAnd We ransomed him with an immense sacrifice.
وفدينه بذبح عظيمAnd We left upon him, among later generations:
وتركنا عليه في ٱلءاخرين"Peace upon Ibrahim!"
سلم على إبرهيمThis is how We recompense those who do good.
كذلك نجزي ٱلمحسنينHe was indeed among Our believing obedient ones.
إنه من عبادنا ٱلمؤمنينAnd We gave him the good news of Ishaq, a prophet among the righteous, and We blessed him and Ishaq.
وبشرنه بإسحق نبيا من ٱلصلحين وبركنا عليه وعلى إسحقAnd among their offspring is one who excels [in good], and one who is manifestly unjust toward his own Self.
ومن ذريتهما محسن وظالم لنفسه مبينAnd We indeed favored Moussa and Harun, and saved them and their people from the immense distress;
ولقد مننا على موسى وهرون ونجينهما وقومهما من ٱلكرب ٱلعظيمWe helped them, and they were the ones who prevailed.
ونصرنهم فكانوا هم ٱلغلبينAnd We gave them both the clear Scripture,
وءاتينهما ٱلكتب ٱلمستبينand We guided them both along the straight path.
وهدينهما ٱلصرط ٱلمستقيمAnd We left upon them both, among later generations:
وتركنا عليهما في ٱلءاخرين"Peace upon Moussa and Harun!"
سلم على موسى وهرونThus indeed do We recompense those who do good.
إنا كذلك نجزي ٱلمحسنينThey were indeed both among Our believing obedient ones.
إنهما من عبادنا ٱلمؤمنينAnd Elias was surely among the envoys, when he said to his people: "Will you not guard yourselves? Do you call upon Ba'l, forsaking the best of creators,
وإن إلياس لمن ٱلمرسلين إذ قال لقومه ألا تتقون أتدعون بعلا وتذرون أحسن ٱلخلقينGod, your Guardian and the Guardian of your earliest forefathers?"
ٱلله ربكم ورب ءابآئكم ٱلأولينBut they denied him; so they will surely be among those brought forth [for punishment] — except the purified obedient ones of God.
فكذبوه فإنهم لمحضرون إلا عباد ٱلله ٱلمخلصينAnd We left upon him, among later generations:
وتركنا عليه في ٱلءاخرين"Peace upon Ilyasin!"
سلم على إل ياسينThus indeed do We recompense those who do good.
إنا كذلك نجزي ٱلمحسنينHe was indeed among Our believing obedient ones.
إنه من عبادنا ٱلمؤمنينAnd Lut was surely among the envoys, when We saved him and his household, all of them, except an old woman among those left behind; then We destroyed the others.
وإن لوطا لمن ٱلمرسلين إذ نجينه وأهله أجمعين إلا عجوزا في ٱلغبرين ثم دمرنا ٱلءاخرينAnd you surely pass by them in the morning, and at night —
وإنكم لتمرون عليهم مصبحين وبٱليلdo you not reason?
أفلا تعقلونAnd Younes was surely among the envoys, when he fled to the laden ship; he took part in the drawing of lots, and was among those who lost; then the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy.
وإن يونس لمن ٱلمرسلين إذ أبق إلى ٱلفلك ٱلمشحون فساهم فكان من ٱلمدحضين فٱلتقمه ٱلحوت وهو مليمHad he not been among those who glorify, he would indeed have remained in its belly until the day they are resurrected.
فلولآ أنه كان من ٱلمسبحين للبث في بطنه إلى يوم يبعثونSo We cast him onto bare ground, while he was unwell,
فنبذنه بٱلعرآء وهو سقيمand We caused a soft, cotton-like plant to grow over him.
وأنبتنا عليه شجرة من يقطينWe then sent him to a hundred thousand [people], or more,
وأرسلنه إلى مائة ألف أو يزيدونand they believed; so We let them enjoy [life] for a while.
فامنوا فمتعنهم إلى حينAsk them then: does your Guardian have daughters, while they have sons?
فٱستفتهم ألربك ٱلبنات ولهم ٱلبنونOr did We create the Agents female, while they witnessed it?
أم خلقنا ٱلملئكة إنثا وهم شهدونIs it not that, out of their own falsehood, they say: "God has begotten"? They are indeed liars.
ألآ إنهم من إفكهم ليقولون ولد ٱلله وإنهم لكذبونWould He have preferred daughters over sons?
أصطفى ٱلبنات على ٱلبنينWhat is wrong with you?
ما لكمHow do you judge?
كيف تحكمونWill you not then remember?
أفلا تذكرونOr do you have a clear authority? Then bring your book, if you are truthful.
أم لكم سلطن مبين فأتوا بكتبكم إن كنتم صدقينAnd they have set up a kinship between Him and the Occulted;
وجعلوا بينه وبين ٱلجنة نسباand these entities well know that they themselves will indeed be brought forth [for punishment] —
ولقد علمت ٱلجنة إنهم لمحضرونglory be to God, above what they describe!
سبحن ٱلله عما يصفونExcept the purified obedient ones of God.
إلا عباد ٱلله ٱلمخلصينNeither you, nor what you obey, can lead anyone astray against Him, except him who is destined to burn in the Blaze.
فإنكم وما تعبدون مآ أنتم عليه بفتنين إلا من هو صال ٱلجحيم"There is not one among us who does not have a known place,
وما منآ إلا له مقام معلومand we are indeed those who stand in ranks, and we are indeed those who glorify."
وإنا لنحن ٱلصآفون وإنا لنحن ٱلمسبحونAnd they indeed used to say: "If only we had a reminder from the earlier peoples, we would have been the purified obedient ones of God."
وإن كانوا ليقولون لو أن عندنا ذكرا من ٱلأولين لكنا عباد ٱلله ٱلمخلصينBut they disowned [it] when it came;
فكفروا بهthey will soon know.
فسوف يعلمونAnd Our word has indeed gone forth in favor of Our envoys, the obedient ones: they are indeed the ones who are helped, and it is indeed Our army that prevails.
ولقد سبقت كلمتنا لعبادنا ٱلمرسلين إنهم لهم ٱلمنصورون وإن جندنا لهم ٱلغلبونSo turn away from them for a while,
فتول عنهم حتى حينand watch them: they will soon see.
وأبصرهم فسوف يبصرونIs it Our punishment that they seek to hasten?
أفبعذابنا يستعجلونWhen it descends into their courtyard, how evil will be the morning of those who were warned!
فإذا نزل بساحتهم فسآء صباح ٱلمنذرينSo turn away from them for a while,
وتول عنهم حتى حينand watch: they will soon see.
وأبصر فسوف يبصرونGlory be to your Guardian, the Guardian of might, above what they describe!
سبحن ربك رب ٱلعزة عما يصفونAnd peace upon the envoys!
وسلم على ٱلمرسلينAnd praise be to God, Guardian of all beings!
وٱلحمد لله رب ٱلعلمين
