Do Not Lose Heart
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. The descent of the Scripture comes from God, the All-Powerful, the Wise.
بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم تنزيل ٱلكتب من ٱلله ٱلعزيز ٱلحكيمWe have sent down to you the Scripture in truth; so obey God, devoting the Law exclusively to Him.
إنآ أنزلنآ إليك ٱلكتب بٱلحق فٱعبد ٱلله مخلصا له ٱلدينIn truth, the pure and exclusive Law belongs to God.
ألا لله ٱلدين ٱلخالصAnd those who take allies besides Him [say]: "We only obey them so that they may bring us nearer to God, as near as can be";
وٱلذين ٱتخذوا من دونه أوليآء ما نعبدهم إلا ليقربونآ إلى ٱلله زلفىGod will judge between them concerning that in which they differ.
إن ٱلله يحكم بينهم في ما هم فيه يختلفونGod does not guide one who is a liar, a great disowner [of the truth].
إن ٱلله لا يهدي من هو كذب كفارHad God wanted to take a child, He would have chosen what He wills from what He creates;
لو أراد ٱلله أن يتخذ ولدا لٱصطفى مما يخلق ما يشآءglory be to Him —
سبحنهHe is God, the One, the Overpowering.
هو ٱلله ٱلوحد ٱلقهارHe created the heavens and the earth in truth;
خلق ٱلسموت وٱلأرض بٱلحقHe wraps the night around the day, and wraps the day around the night;
يكور ٱليل على ٱلنهار ويكور ٱلنهار على ٱليلHe has subjected the sun and the moon,
وسخر ٱلشمس وٱلقمرeach running to an appointed term.
كل يجري لأجل مسمىIs He not the All-Powerful, the Great Forgiver?
ألا هو ٱلعزيز ٱلغفرHe created you from a single Self, then brought forth from it its spouse;
خلقكم من نفس وحدة ثم جعل منها زوجهاand He sent down for you, among the livestock, eight pairs;
وأنزل لكم من ٱلأنعم ثمنية أزوجHe creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, in three darknesses;
يخلقكم في بطون أمهتكم خلقا من بعد خلق في ظلمت ثلثthat is God, your Guardian; to Him belongs the dominion;
ذلكم ٱلله ربكم له ٱلملكthere is no deity but Him;
لآ إله إلا هوhow then are you turned away?
فأنى تصرفونIf you disown, God is Self-Sufficient, beyond you;
إن تكفروا فإن ٱلله غني عنكمand He does not approve of disowning for His obedient ones;
ولا يرضى لعباده ٱلكفرbut if you are grateful, He approves it for you.
وإن تشكروا يرضه لكمNo bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another;
ولا تزر وازرة وزر أخرىthen to your Guardian is your return, and He will inform you of what you used to do.
ثم إلى ربكم مرجعكم فينبئكم بما كنتم تعملونHe is certainly All-Knowing of what the chests contain.
إنه عليم بذات ٱلصدورWhen harm touches the human being, he calls upon his Guardian, turning back to Him;
وإذا مس ٱلإنسن ضر دعا ربه منيبا إليهthen, when He grants him a blessing from Himself, he forgets what he used to call upon before, and sets up equals to God, to lead astray from His path.
ثم إذا خوله نعمة منه نسي ما كان يدعوا إليه من قبل وجعل لله أندادا ليضل عن سبيلهSay: "Enjoy your disowning a little; you are indeed among the companions of the Fire."
قل تمتع بكفرك قليلا إنك من أصحب ٱلنارHe who is devoted through the hours of the night, prostrating and standing, fearing the last life and hoping for the benevolence of his Guardian —
أمن هو قنت ءانآء ٱليل ساجدا وقآئما يحذر ٱلءاخرة ويرجوا رحمة ربهsay: "Are those who know equal to those who do not know?"
قل هل يستوي ٱلذين يعلمون وٱلذين لا يعلمونOnly the possessors of intelligence take heed.
إنما يتذكر أولوا ٱلألببSay: "O My obedient ones who believe, guard yourselves before your Guardian;
قل يعباد ٱلذين ءامنوا ٱتقوا ربكمfor those who do good in the present life there is a fine share;
للذين أحسنوا في هذه ٱلدنيا حسنةand God's earth is vast;
وأرض ٱلله وسعةthe patient will be given their reward in full, without count."
إنما يوفى ٱلصبرون أجرهم بغير حسابSay: "I have been commanded to obey God, devoting the Law exclusively to Him, and I have been commanded to be the first of those true to Him alone."
قل إني أمرت أن أعبد ٱلله مخلصا له ٱلدين وأمرت لأن أكون أول ٱلمسلمينSay: "I fear, should I disobey my Guardian, the punishment of a tremendous day."
قل إني أخاف إن عصيت ربي عذاب يوم عظيمSay: "It is God I obey, devoting my Law exclusively to Him;
قل ٱلله أعبد مخلصا له دينيso obey whatever you wish besides Him."
فٱعبدوا ما شئتم من دونهSay: "The losers are those who will have lost themselves and their families on the Day of Appearance;
قل إن ٱلخسرين ٱلذين خسروا أنفسهم وأهليهم يوم ٱلقيمةis that not the manifest loss?"
ألا ذلك هو ٱلخسران ٱلمبينThey will have, above them, canopies of fire, and beneath them, likewise;
لهم من فوقهم ظلل من ٱلنار ومن تحتهم ظللit is by this that God frightens His obedient ones:
ذلك يخوف ٱلله به عباده"O My obedient ones, guard yourselves before Me!"
يعباد فٱتقونAnd those who avoid obeying the Tyrant, and turn back to God, will have the good news.
وٱلذين ٱجتنبوا ٱلطغوت أن يعبدوها وأنابوا إلى ٱلله لهم ٱلبشرىSo give good news to My obedient ones who listen to the word and follow the best of it;
فبشر عباد ٱلذين يستمعون ٱلقول فيتبعون أحسنهthose are the ones God has guided,
أولئك ٱلذين هدىهم ٱللهand those are the possessors of intelligence.
وأولئك هم أولوا ٱلألببHe against whom the word of punishment has proven true — will you save him who is in the Fire?
أفمن حق عليه كلمة ٱلعذاب أفأنت تنقذ من في ٱلنارBut those who guarded themselves before their Guardian will have high chambers, above which other chambers are built, beneath which rivers flow;
لكن ٱلذين ٱتقوا ربهم لهم غرف من فوقها غرف مبنية تجري من تحتها ٱلأنهرa promise of God —
وعد ٱللهGod does not fail His promise.
لا يخلف ٱلله ٱلميعادHave you not seen that God sends down water from the sky, and channels it as springs in the earth, then brings forth with it crops of varying colors; then they wither, and you see them yellowed; then He turns them to debris?
ألم تر أن ٱلله أنزل من ٱلسمآء مآء فسلكه ينبيع في ٱلأرض ثم يخرج به زرعا مختلفا ألونه ثم يهيج فترىه مصفرا ثم يجعله حطماThere is indeed in that a reminder for the possessors of intelligence.
إن في ذلك لذكرى لأولي ٱلألببHe whose chest God has opened to true adherence [to Him], so that he is upon a light from his Guardian —
أفمن شرح ٱلله صدره للإسلم فهو على نور من ربهso woe to those whose cores are hardened against the remembrance of God!
فويل للقسية قلوبهم من ذكر ٱللهThose are in manifest error.
أولئك في ضلل مبينGod has sent down the most beautiful of discourse, a Scripture of verses corresponding to one another, repeated in cycles,
ٱلله نزل أحسن ٱلحديث كتبا متشبها مثانيat which the skins of those who fear their Guardian shiver; then their skins and their cores soften toward the remembrance of God;
تقشعر منه جلود ٱلذين يخشون ربهم ثم تلين جلودهم وقلوبهم إلى ذكر ٱللهthat is the guidance of God, by which He guides whom He wills;
ذلك هدى ٱلله يهدي به من يشآءand whoever God sends astray has no guide.
ومن يضلل ٱلله فما له من هادHe who shields himself with his face from the worst punishment on the Day of Appearance —
أفمن يتقي بوجهه سوء ٱلعذاب يوم ٱلقيمةand it will be said to the wrongdoers: "Taste what you used to earn."
وقيل للظلمين ذوقوا ما كنتم تكسبونThose before them denied, and the punishment came to them from where they did not perceive;
كذب ٱلذين من قبلهم فأتىهم ٱلعذاب من حيث لا يشعرونGod made them taste disgrace in the present life,
فأذاقهم ٱلله ٱلخزي في ٱلحيوة ٱلدنياand the punishment of the last life is greater still, if only they knew.
ولعذاب ٱلءاخرة أكبر لو كانوا يعلمونWe have certainly multiplied for mankind, in this recitation, every kind of example, that they may take heed — a flawless recitation, without the slightest crookedness, that they may guard themselves.
ولقد ضربنا للناس في هذا ٱلقرءان من كل مثل لعلهم يتذكرون قرءانا عربيا غير ذي عوج لعلهم يتقونGod multiplies an example: a man belonging to quarrelling partners, and a man belonging wholly to one man —
ضرب ٱلله مثلا رجلا فيه شركآء متشكسون ورجلا سلما لرجلare they equal, as an example?
هل يستويان مثلاPraise belongs to God!
ٱلحمد للهBut most of them do not know.
بل أكثرهم لا يعلمونYou will die, and they will die; then, on the Day of Appearance, you will quarrel before your Guardian.
إنك ميت وإنهم ميتون ثم إنكم يوم ٱلقيمة عند ربكم تختصمونWho then is more unjust than one who lies about God and denies the truth when it has come to him?
فمن أظلم ممن كذب على ٱلله وكذب بٱلصدق إذ جآءهIs there not, in Jahannam, a dwelling for those who disown?
أليس في جهنم مثوى للكفرينAnd he who came with the truth, and affirmed it, those are the ones who guard themselves.
وٱلذي جآء بٱلصدق وصدق به أولئك هم ٱلمتقونThey will have whatever they wish, with their Guardian;
لهم ما يشآءون عند ربهمsuch is the reward of those who do good: God covers for them the worst of what they did, and repays them according to the best of what they used to do.
ذلك جزآء ٱلمحسنين ليكفر ٱلله عنهم أسوأ ٱلذي عملوا ويجزيهم أجرهم بأحسن ٱلذي كانوا يعملونIs God not sufficient for His obedient one?
أليس ٱلله بكاف عبدهThey seek to frighten you with those besides Him;
ويخوفونك بٱلذين من دونهand whoever God sends astray has no guide.
ومن يضلل ٱلله فما له من هادAnd whoever God guides has no one to lead him astray;
ومن يهد ٱلله فما له من مضلis God not All-Powerful, possessor of vengeance?
أليس ٱلله بعزيز ذي ٱنتقامAnd if you ask them who created the heavens and the earth, they will surely say: "God";
ولئن سألتهم من خلق ٱلسموت وٱلأرض ليقولن ٱللهsay: "Have you considered, then, what you invoke besides God? If God willed harm for me, could they remove His harm? Or if He willed benevolence for me, could they withhold His benevolence?"
قل أفرءيتم ما تدعون من دون ٱلله إن أرادني ٱلله بضر هل هن كشفت ضره أو أرادني برحمة هل هن ممسكت رحمتهSay: "God is sufficient for me;
قل حسبي ٱللهit is in Him that those who rely [upon God] rely."
عليه يتوكل ٱلمتوكلونSay: "O my people, act according to your position; I am acting [according to mine];
قل يقوم ٱعملوا على مكانتكم إني عملyou will soon know upon whom a punishment will fall that disgraces him, and upon whom a lasting punishment will settle."
فسوف تعلمون من يأتيه عذاب يخزيه ويحل عليه عذاب مقيمWe have sent down to you the Scripture for mankind, in truth;
إنآ أنزلنا عليك ٱلكتب للناس بٱلحقwhoever is guided, it is for his own Self;
فمن ٱهتدى فلنفسهand whoever strays, strays only against his own Self;
ومن ضل فإنما يضل عليهاand you are not a trustee over them.
ومآ أنت عليهم بوكيلGod takes back the Selves at the time of their death, and those that have not died, during their sleep;
ٱلله يتوفى ٱلأنفس حين موتها وٱلتي لم تمت في منامهاHe retains those for whom He has decreed death, and sends back the others until an appointed term;
فيمسك ٱلتي قضى عليها ٱلموت ويرسل ٱلأخرى إلى أجل مسمىthere is indeed in that signs for a people who reflect.
إن في ذلك لءايت لقوم يتفكرونHave they taken intercessors besides God?
أم ٱتخذوا من دون ٱلله شفعآءSay: "Even though they have no power over anything and do not reason?"
قل أولو كانوا لا يملكون شيا ولا يعقلونSay: "Intercession belongs entirely to God;
قل لله ٱلشفعة جميعاto Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth;
له ملك ٱلسموت وٱلأرضthen to Him you will be returned."
ثم إليه ترجعونAnd when God alone is mentioned, the cores of those who do not believe in the last life shrink with revulsion;
وإذا ذكر ٱلله وحده ٱشمأزت قلوب ٱلذين لا يؤمنون بٱلءاخرةbut when those besides Him are mentioned, at once they rejoice.
وإذا ذكر ٱلذين من دونه إذا هم يستبشرونSay: "O God, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of what escapes the senses and of what is manifest, You alone will judge between Your obedient ones concerning that in which they used to differ."
قل ٱللهم فاطر ٱلسموت وٱلأرض علم ٱلغيب وٱلشهدة أنت تحكم بين عبادك في ما كانوا فيه يختلفونIf those who did wrong possessed all that is on earth, and its like besides, they would offer it as ransom from the worst punishment on the Day of Appearance;
ولو أن للذين ظلموا ما في ٱلأرض جميعا ومثله معه لٱفتدوا به من سوء ٱلعذاب يوم ٱلقيمةand there will appear to them, from God, what they had not accounted for.
وبدا لهم من ٱلله ما لم يكونوا يحتسبونThe evil consequences of what they earned will appear to them,
وبدا لهم سيات ما كسبواand what they used to mock will envelop them.
وحاق بهم ما كانوا به يستهزءونWhen harm touches the human being, he calls upon Us; then, when We grant him a blessing from Us, he says: "This was only given to me because of some knowledge [I possess]."
فإذا مس ٱلإنسن ضر دعانا ثم إذا خولنه نعمة منا قال إنمآ أوتيته على علمRather, it is a trial,
بل هي فتنةbut most of them do not know.
ولكن أكثرهم لا يعلمونThose before them said the same thing, and what they used to earn availed them nothing.
قد قالها ٱلذين من قبلهم فمآ أغنى عنهم ما كانوا يكسبونThe evil consequences of what they earned struck them;
فأصابهم سيات ما كسبواand those among these who do wrong will be struck by the evil consequences of what they earn, and they will not render [Him] powerless.
وٱلذين ظلموا من هؤلآء سيصيبهم سيات ما كسبوا وما هم بمعجزينDo they not know that God extends provision for whom He wills, and measures it?
أولم يعلموا أن ٱلله يبسط ٱلرزق لمن يشآء ويقدرThere is indeed in that signs for a people who believe.
إن في ذلك لءايت لقوم يؤمنونSay: "O My obedient ones who have been excessive against yourselves, do not lose heart regarding the benevolence of God;
قل يعبادي ٱلذين أسرفوا على أنفسهم لا تقنطوا من رحمة ٱللهGod forgives all wrongs;
إن ٱلله يغفر ٱلذنوب جميعاHe is the Most-Forgiving, the Benevolent."
إنه هو ٱلغفور ٱلرحيمTurn back to your Guardian, and be true to Him alone, before the punishment comes to you; then you will not be helped.
وأنيبوا إلى ربكم وأسلموا له من قبل أن يأتيكم ٱلعذاب ثم لا تنصرونAnd follow the best of what has been sent down to you from your Guardian, before the punishment comes to you suddenly, without your realizing it — lest a Self should say: "What regret, for having neglected my duty toward God, and for having been among the mockers!" or should say: "Had God guided me, I would have been among those who guard themselves"; or should say, upon seeing the punishment: "If only I had a return, I would be among those who do good."
وٱتبعوا أحسن مآ أنزل إليكم من ربكم من قبل أن يأتيكم ٱلعذاب بغتة وأنتم لا تشعرون أن تقول نفس يحسرتى على ما فرطت في جنب ٱلله وإن كنت لمن ٱلسخرين أو تقول لو أن ٱلله هدىني لكنت من ٱلمتقين أو تقول حين ترى ٱلعذاب لو أن لي كرة فأكون من ٱلمحسنينIndeed! My signs certainly came to you, but you denied them, grew arrogant, and were among those who disown.
بلى قد جآءتك ءايتي فكذبت بها وٱستكبرت وكنت من ٱلكفرينAnd on the Day of Appearance, you will see those who lied about God, their faces blackened.
ويوم ٱلقيمة ترى ٱلذين كذبوا على ٱلله وجوههم مسودةIs there not, in Jahannam, a dwelling for the arrogant?
أليس في جهنم مثوى للمتكبرينAnd God saves those who guarded themselves, by their triumph; no harm will touch them, nor will they grieve.
وينجي ٱلله ٱلذين ٱتقوا بمفازتهم لا يمسهم ٱلسوء ولا هم يحزنونGod is the creator of all things;
ٱلله خلق كل شىءand He is, over all things, a trustee.
وهو على كل شىء وكيلTo Him belong the charges of the heavens and the earth;
له مقاليد ٱلسموت وٱلأرضand those who disown the signs of God, those are the losers.
وٱلذين كفروا بايت ٱلله أولئك هم ٱلخسرونSay: "Do you then command me to obey other than God, O ignorant ones?"
قل أفغير ٱلله تأمروني أعبد أيها ٱلجهلونIt has certainly been revealed to you, and to those before you: "If you associate, your work will surely collapse, and you will surely be among the losers."
ولقد أوحي إليك وإلى ٱلذين من قبلك لئن أشركت ليحبطن عملك ولتكونن من ٱلخسرينSo obey God, and be among the grateful.
بل ٱلله فٱعبد وكن من ٱلشكرينThey did not measure God with His true measure; the whole earth will be in His grasp on the Day of Appearance, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand.
وما قدروا ٱلله حق قدره وٱلأرض جميعا قبضته يوم ٱلقيمة وٱلسموت مطويت بيمينهGlory be to Him! He is far above what they associate.
سبحنه وتعلى عما يشركونThe Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will collapse, thunderstruck, except whom God wills;
ونفخ في ٱلصور فصعق من في ٱلسموت ومن في ٱلأرض إلا من شآء ٱللهthen it will be blown a second time, and at once they will stand up, looking on.
ثم نفخ فيه أخرى فإذا هم قيام ينظرونThe earth will shine with the light of its Guardian; the record will be set down; the prophets and the witnesses will be brought forward; it will be judged between them in truth, and they will not be wronged.
وأشرقت ٱلأرض بنور ربها ووضع ٱلكتب وجايء بٱلنبين وٱلشهدآء وقضي بينهم بٱلحق وهم لا يظلمونEvery Self will be paid in full for what it did, and He knows best what they do.
ووفيت كل نفس ما عملت وهو أعلم بما يفعلونThose who disown will be driven toward Jahannam, in troops,
وسيق ٱلذين كفروا إلى جهنم زمراuntil, when they reach it, its gates will open, and its keepers will say to them: "Did messengers from among you not come to you, reciting to you the signs of your Guardian and warning you of the meeting of this your day?"
حتى إذا جآءوها فتحت أبوبها وقال لهم خزنتهآ ألم يأتكم رسل منكم يتلون عليكم ءايت ربكم وينذرونكم لقآء يومكم هذاThey will say: "Indeed!" but the word of punishment will have proven true against those who disowned.
قالوا بلى ولكن حقت كلمة ٱلعذاب على ٱلكفرينIt will be said: "Enter the gates of Jahannam, to remain therein forever."
قيل ٱدخلوا أبوب جهنم خلدين فيهاHow wretched is the dwelling of the arrogant!
فبئس مثوى ٱلمتكبرينAnd those who guarded themselves before their Guardian will be led toward the Garden, in troops,
وسيق ٱلذين ٱتقوا ربهم إلى ٱلجنة زمراuntil, when they reach it, and its gates open, its keepers will say to them: "Peace be upon you, you have been good — enter it, to remain therein forever."
حتى إذا جآءوها وفتحت أبوبها وقال لهم خزنتها سلم عليكم طبتم فٱدخلوها خلدينThey will say: "Praise belongs to God, who has kept His promise to us, and made us inherit the earth, that we may settle in the Garden wherever we wish; how excellent is the reward of those who work!"
وقالوا ٱلحمد لله ٱلذي صدقنا وعده وأورثنا ٱلأرض نتبوأ من ٱلجنة حيث نشآء فنعم أجر ٱلعملينAnd you will see the Agents surrounding the Edifice, glorifying their Guardian with praise;
وترى ٱلملئكة حآفين من حول ٱلعرش يسبحون بحمد ربهمit will be judged between them in truth,
وقضي بينهم بٱلحقand it will be said: "Praise belongs to God, Guardian of all beings."
وقيل ٱلحمد لله رب ٱلعلمين
