An-Nisa

  • In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. O mankind! guard yourselves toward your Guardian, who created you from a single Self, and created from it its spouse, and spread, from the two of them, many men and women.i 1
  • And guard yourselves toward God, in whose name you appeal to one another, and [respect] the ties of kinship. 1
  • God is indeed, over you, an Observer. 1
  • And give the orphans their possessions, 2
  • and do not substitute the vile for the good, 2
  • and do not devour their possessions with yours: 2
  • that is indeed a grave offense. 2
  • And if you fear not being equitable toward the orphans, marry then those women who are agreeable to you, two, three, or four;i 3
  • and if you fear not being just, then only one, or those to whom you are bound by oath. 3
  • That is closest to sparing you from being overburdened by the weight of a family (too large to bear).i 3
  • And give women their dowries, as an attribution of full right. 4
  • Then, if they willingly release any of it to you, consume it 4
  • in complete ease and benefit. 4
  • And do not entrust to the foolish your possessions, which God has made a support for you; 5
  • but feed them from it, clothe them, and speak to them a recognized word. 5
  • And test the orphans until they reach the age of marriage; if you then discern in them a soundness of judgment, hand over to them their possessions, and do not devour them wastefully and hastily, before they grow up. 6
  • And whoever is rich, let him abstain; 6
  • and whoever is poor, let him eat from it reasonably. 6
  • And when you hand over their possessions to them, take witnesses regarding them. 6
  • God suffices as an accountant. 6
  • To men belongs a share of what the two parents and relatives leave, and to women belongs a share of what the two parents and relatives leave, whether little or much — 7
  • a mandatory share.i 7
  • And when the possessors of kinship ties, the orphans, and the destitute are present at the division, assign them a share from it,i 8
  • and speak to them a recognized word. 8
  • And let those fear [doing wrong] who, if they left behind them a vulnerable offspring, would fear for it: 9
  • let them, then, guard themselves toward God, and speak a straightforward word. 9
  • Those who devour the possessions of orphans unjustly are only swallowing fire into their bellies, 10
  • and they will burn in a blaze. 10
  • God instructs you, concerning your children: 11
  • to the male, the equivalent of the share of two females. 11
  • But if there are more than two women, two-thirds of what is left belongs to them; 11
  • and if she is alone, half belongs to her. 11
  • And to his two parents, to each of them, a sixth of what he leaves, if he has a child; 11
  • but if he has no child, and his parents inherit from him, to his mother belongs a third. 11
  • If he has siblings, to his mother belongs a sixth, 11
  • after [the execution of] a testament he may have made, or a debt. 11
  • Your parents and your children — you do not know which of them are closer to you in benefit: 11
  • it is an obligation from God. 11
  • God is indeed All-Knowing, Wise. 11
  • And to you belongs half of what your wives leave, if they have no child; 12
  • but if they have a child, to you belongs a quarter of what they leave, after [the execution of] a testament they may have made, or a debt. 12
  • And to them belongs a quarter of what you leave, if you have no child; 12
  • but if you have a child, to them belongs an eighth of what you leave, after [the execution of] a testament you may have made, or a debt. 12
  • And if a man whose inheritance passes in the absence of any ascendant or descendant, or a woman in the same case, has a brother or a sister, to each of them belongs a sixth;i 12
  • but if they are more numerous than that, they share in the third, after [the execution of] a testament that may have been made, or a debt, without harm [to the heirs]. 12
  • It is a recommendation from God. 12
  • God is All-Knowing, full of patience. 12
  • Those are the limits of God. 13
  • And whoever obeys God and His Messenger, He admits him into gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein he will abide eternally. 13
  • That is the immense triumph. 13
  • And whoever disobeys God and His Messenger, and transgresses His limits, He admits him into a fire wherein he will abide eternally, 14
  • and he will have a humiliating punishment. 14
  • And those of your women who commit indecency, take against them the testimony of four among you; 15
  • and if they testify, then keep them within the household rather than casting them out, until death recalls them [to God], or God opens a way for them.i 15
  • And the two among you who commit it, sanction them both; 16
  • but if they turn back [to God] and reform, turn away from them: 16
  • God is indeed the Ever-Accepter of repentance, full of benevolence. 16
  • The repentance accepted by God concerns only those who do evil out of ignorance, then turn back [to Him] without delay: 17
  • those are the ones toward whom God turns with clemency. 17
  • God is All-Knowing, Wise. 17
  • And repentance is not accepted for those who commit evil deeds until, when death presents itself to one of them, he says: "I turn back [to God] now" — nor for those who die while denying-disowning: 18
  • those are the ones for whom We have prepared a painful punishment. 18
  • O you who have believed! it is not lawful for you to inherit women against their will, 19
  • and do not prevent them [from remarrying] so as to take back part of what you gave them, unless they commit a manifest indecency. 19
  • And live with them according to what is recognized. 19
  • If you dislike them, it may be that you dislike a thing in which God places much good. 19
  • And if you want to replace one wife with another, and you have given one of them a treasure, take nothing of it back.i 20
  • Would you take it back through slander and manifest transgression? 20
  • And how would you take it back, when one of you has already been intimately united with the other, and they took from you a solemn engagement? 21
  • And do not marry those women whom your ancestors married, except what has already passed. 22
  • It was an indecency and an abomination, 22
  • and what an evil path! 22
  • Forbidden to you are: your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your paternal aunts, your maternal aunts, your brother's daughters, your sister's daughters, 23
  • your mothers who took you into their care, as well as your sisters through shared care,i 23
  • the mothers of your wives, your stepdaughters under your care, from wives with whom you have consummated marriage — 23
  • but if you have not consummated marriage with them, no blame upon you — 23
  • the wives of your sons from your own loins, 23
  • and to unite two sisters, except what has already passed. 23
  • God is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 23
  • And the contractually protected women, except those to whom you are bound by oath —i 24
  • it is God's Code that binds you.i 24
  • And made lawful to you are all beyond these categories, whom you seek with your possessions, as men who bind themselves in contract, not in debauchery. 24
  • And for what you have enjoyed with them, give them their rewards, as a fixed obligation. 24
  • And no blame upon you for what you mutually agree upon, beyond the fixed obligation. 24
  • God is indeed All-Knowing, Wise. 24
  • And whoever among you lacks the means to marry believing protected women, [let him marry] then one of your believing young women bound by oath.i 25
  • God knows perfectly your mutual commitments, by virtue of your faith;i 25
  • You are of one another. 25
  • Marry them, then, with the permission of their family, 25
  • and give them their wages according to what is recognized, as protected women, not as promiscuous ones nor as takers of secret lovers.i 25
  • And once protected, if they commit an indecency, they incur half the punishment of women protected by contract.i 25
  • That, for whoever among you fears falling into [moral] hardship; 25
  • but to be patient is better for you. 25
  • God is Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 25
  • God wants to make things clear to you, to guide you according to the ways of those who preceded you, and to turn toward you with clemency. 26
  • God is All-Knowing, Wise. 26
  • God wants to turn toward you with clemency, 27
  • while those who follow their desires want you to deviate greatly. 27
  • God wants to lighten [the burden] for you, 28
  • for the human being was created weak. 28
  • O you who have believed! do not devour your wealth among yourselves through falsehood, 29
  • unless it is a trade concluded with your mutual consent. 29
  • And do not kill yourselves: 29
  • God is indeed, toward you, full of benevolence. 29
  • And whoever does that out of hostility and injustice, We will burn him in a fire. 30
  • And that is, for God, an easy thing. 30
  • If you avoid the grave offenses which are forbidden to you, We will cover your evil deeds, and We will admit you into a noble entrance. 31
  • And do not covet that by which God has favored some of you above others. 32
  • To men a share of what they have earned, 32
  • and to women a share of what they have earned. 32
  • And ask God for His favor. 32
  • God is indeed, of all things, All-Knowing. 32
  • And to each, We have assigned heirs for what are left 33
  • by the two parents and the relatives. 33
  • And those with whom your oaths have bound you, give them their share. 33
  • God is indeed, over all things, a witness. 33
  • Men bear the executive, protective, and financial charge of the household toward women, by reason of the advantage God has granted some over others, and of what they spend from their possessions.i 34
  • Righteous women are devoted, guardians of what escapes the presence [of others], by reason of what God has preserved. 34
  • And those whose unilateral breach [of the marital pact] you fear, admonish them, withdraw from them in the beds, then multiply them [the marital structure, by taking another wife];i 34
  • then, if they obey you, seek no further way against them. 34
  • God is indeed Exalted, Great. 34
  • And if you fear a rupture between the two, send then an arbiter from his family, and an arbiter from her family; if they both want reconciliation, God will bring them into accord. 35
  • God is indeed All-Knowing, Informed. 35
  • And obey God, 36
  • and associate nothing with Him, 36
  • and kindness toward the two parents, relatives, orphans, the destitute, the near neighbor, the distant neighbor, the companion at your side, the stranded traveler, and those to whom you are bound by oath. 36
  • God does not love him who is vain, full of boastfulness. 36
  • Those who are stingy, order stinginess upon people, and hide what God has given them of His favor — 37
  • We have prepared, for those who deny-disown, a humiliating punishment. 37
  • And those who spend their wealth for show before people, and believe neither in God nor in the Last Day — 38
  • whoever has the Diverter as a companion, what an evil companion!i 38
  • And what would they have to lose, if they believed in God and the Last Day, and spent from what God provided them as sustenance? 39
  • God knows them perfectly. 39
  • God does no injustice, even the weight of a grain. 40
  • And if it is a good deed, He doubles it, and grants, from Himself, an immense reward. 40
  • How then, when We bring, from every community, a witness, and We bring you as a witness against these? 41
  • On that day, those who denied-disowned and disobeyed the messenger would wish that the earth were leveled over them, and they will not be able to hide anything from God. 42
  • O you who have believed! do not approach the Contact while intoxicated, until you know what you are saying, nor [after] having soiled yourselves [relieving a need] — except when passing along a way — until you have washed yourselves.i 43
  • And if you are sick, or on a journey, or one of you has come from relieving himself, or you have known a woman in intimacy, and you find no water, then resort to clean earth, and wipe your faces and your hands with it.i 43
  • God is indeed Ever-Effacing, Most-Forgiving. 43
  • Have you not seen those to whom a share of the Scripture was given, buying error and wanting you to stray from the path?i 44
  • God knows best your enemies. 45
  • God suffices as a protector, and God suffices as a helper. 45
  • Among the Reoriented, there are some who displace words from their context, and say: "We have heard and disobeyed", and: "Listen, without being made to hear", and: "Ra'ina", twisting their tongues and casting aspersion on the Law.i 46
  • And had they said: "We have heard and obeyed", and: "Listen", and: "Look at us", it would have been better for them, and more upright; 46
  • but God cursed them for their denial-disowning, and they believe only a little. 46
  • O you to whom the Scripture was given! believe in what We have sent down, confirming what is with you, before We efface faces, turning them backward, or curse them as We cursed those of the sabt [the act of rest/inaction].i 47
  • And the command of God is always fulfilled. 47
  • God does not forgive that anything be associated with Him, 48
  • but He forgives, besides that, whom He wills. 48
  • And whoever associates with God invents a grave offense. 48
  • Have you not seen those who declare themselves pure? 49
  • God, rather, purifies whom He wills, 49
  • and they will not be wronged by a thread. 49
  • Look how they invent the lie against God: that suffices as a manifest offense. 50
  • Have you not seen those to whom a share of the Scripture was given, believing in the Idol and the Tyrant, and saying of those who deny-disown: "These are better guided, in path, than those who have believed"?i 51
  • Those are the ones God has cursed; 52
  • and whoever God curses, you will find for him no helper. 52
  • Or do they have a share of the dominion? They would then not give people even the groove of a date-stone. 53
  • Or do they envy people for what God has given them of His favor? 54
  • We have indeed given the family of Ibrahim the Scripture and the wisdom, and We gave them an immense dominion.i 54
  • Among them, there are some who believed in it, and some who turned away from it. 55
  • Jahannam suffices as a blaze. 55
  • Those who denied-disowned Our signs, We will burn them in a fire. 56
  • Every time their skins are consumed, We will replace them with other skins, so that they may taste the punishment. 56
  • God is indeed All-Powerful, Wise. 56
  • And those who have believed and done righteous deeds, We will admit them into gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally, forever. 57
  • They will have therein purified spouses, 57

  • God orders you to restore trusts to their rightful owners, and, when you judge between people, to judge with equity. 58
  • How excellent is that to which God exhorts you! 58
  • God is indeed the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. 58
  • O you who have believed! obey God, obey the messenger, and those among you who hold authority. 59
  • And if you disagree about something, refer it to God and to the messenger, if you believe in God and the Last Day. 59
  • That is better, and of finer interpretation. 59
  • Have you not seen those who claim to have believed in what has been revealed to you and in what was revealed before you, and who want to bring their dispute before the Tyrant, though they have been ordered to deny-disown it? 60
  • The Diverter wants to lead them far astray.i 60
  • And when it is said to them: "Come to what God has sent down, and to the messenger", you see the hypocrites turn away from you, resolutely. 61
  • How then, when misfortune strikes them for what their hands have wrought, do they then come to you, swearing by God: "We wanted only good and reconciliation"? 62
  • Those are the ones whose cores God knows; turn away from them, then, admonish them, and speak to them, concerning themselves, a penetrating word. 63
  • And We sent no messenger except that he be obeyed, with God's permission. 64
  • And had they come to you, after having wronged themselves, to ask God's forgiveness, and had the messenger asked forgiveness for them, they would certainly have found God the Ever-Accepter of repentance, full of benevolence. 64
  • But no, by your Guardian! they will not believe until they have taken you as judge of their disputes, and no longer find, within themselves, any hardship over what you have decided, and accept it with complete integrity. 65

  • And whoever fights in the way of God, and is killed or prevails, We will give him an immense reward. 74
  • And what is with you that you should not fight in the way of God, and for the men, women, and children reduced to weakness, who say: "Our Guardian, bring us out of this city whose people are unjust, and give us, from Yourself, a protector, and give us, from Yourself, a helper"? 75

  • And whoever emigrates in the way of God will find, on the earth, an ample refuge and abundance. 100
  • And whoever leaves his dwelling, emigrating toward God and His Messenger, and is then overtaken by death, his reward is henceforth incumbent upon God. 100

  • And when you have completed the Contact, remember God, standing, sitting, or lying on your sides. 103
  • Then, once at ease, maintain the Contact. 103

  • And whoever opposes the messenger, after guidance has become clear to him, and follows a path other than that of the believers, We will leave him to what he has turned to, and We will burn him in Jahannam. 115
