Ghafir

  • In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Ha, Mim.i 1
  • The descent of the Scripture comes from God, the All-Powerful, the All-Knowing, He who forgives wrong and accepts repentance, severe in retribution, possessor of abundant grace,i 3
  • there is no god but Him; 3
  • to Him is the ultimate return. 3
  • Only those who deny dispute concerning the signs of God;i 4
  • so let not their bustling about through the lands deceive you. 4
  • Before them, the people of Nuh denied, and the factions after them,i 5
  • and every community schemed against its messenger to seize him, 5
  • disputing by falsehood to refute the truth with it — so I seized them: 5
  • how was My retribution! 5
  • Thus was the word of your Guardian fulfilled against those who deny: they are the companions of the Fire.i 6
  • Those who bear the Edifice and those around it glorify their Guardian with praise, believe in Him, and ask forgiveness for those who believe:i 7
  • "Our Guardian, You encompass all things in benevolence and knowledge; so forgive those who repent and follow Your path, and protect them from the punishment of the Blaze; 7
  • Our Guardian, admit them into the gardens of Eden that You have promised them, along with whoever acted rightly among their fathers, their spouses, and their offspring; 8
  • You indeed are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. 8
  • And protect them from evil deeds; 9
  • whoever You protect from evil deeds that day, You have shown him benevolence, 9
  • and that is the immense triumph." 9
  • Those who deny will be called out to: "God's detestation is greater than your own detestation of yourselves, when you were called to faith and you denied."i 10
  • They will say: "Our Guardian, You made us die twice and made us live twice; we acknowledge our wrongs — is there then any way out?" 11
  • That is because, when God alone was invoked, you denied, and when something was associated with Him, you believed;i 12
  • so judgment belongs to God, the Most High, the Great. 12
  • It is He who shows you His signs and sends down provision for you from the sky; 13
  • but only he who turns back [to Him] takes heed. 13
  • So call upon God, devoting the Law exclusively to Him, even if it displeases those who deny.i 14
  • He is the Raiser of ranks, possessor of the Edifice;i 15
  • He casts the Influx of His command upon whom He wills among His obedient ones, to warn of the Day of Meeting, the day they will appear exposed,i 16
  • nothing of them is hidden from God. 16
  • To whom belongs the dominion today? 16
  • To God, the One, the Overpowering. 16
  • Today every Self will be repaid for what it earned;i 17
  • no injustice today; 17
  • God is swift in reckoning. 17
  • Warn them of the imminent Day, when the cores will be at the throats, choked with distress,i 18
  • the wrongdoers will have neither a close ally nor an intercessor who is heeded. 18
  • He knows the treachery of glances and what the chests conceal.i 19
  • God judges with truth, 20
  • while those they invoke besides Him judge nothing; 20
  • God is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. 20
  • Have they not traveled through the earth to see how the end was of those before them? 21
  • They were stronger than them in might and in traces left on the earth, and God seized them for their wrongs; 21
  • no protector defended them against God. 21
  • That was because their messengers used to bring them clear proofs, but they denied; so God seized them:i 22
  • He is strong, severe in retribution. 22
  • We certainly sent Moussa with Our signs and a clear authority, to Fir'awn, Haman, and Qaroon; they said: "A worker of illusion, a great liar."i 24
  • Then, when he brought them the truth from Us, they said: "Kill the sons of those who believed with him, and violate the modesty of their women"; 25
  • but the scheming of those who deny is only in error.i 25
  • Fir'awn said: "Leave me to kill Moussa, and let him call upon his Guardian! I fear he may change your Law or bring about corruption in the land."i 26
  • Moussa said: "I take refuge in my Guardian and your Guardian from every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Reckoning."i 27
  • A believing man from the clan of Fir'awn, who concealed his faith, said: "Will you kill a man for saying, 'My Guardian is God,' when he has brought you clear proofs from your Guardian? If he is lying, his lie is upon him; and if he is truthful, some of what he threatens you with will befall you."i 28
  • God does not guide one who is excessive, a great liar. 28
  • "O my people, the dominion is yours today, you are dominant in the land; but who will help us against God's might if it comes upon us?" 29
  • Fir'awn said: "I show you only what I myself see, and I guide you only to the path of right conduct."i 29
  • The one who had believed said: "O my people, I fear for you a day like that of the factions, like the fate of the people of Nuh, the Recidivists [Aad], the Depleters [Thamud], and those who came after them;i 31
  • and God does not intend any injustice for His obedient ones." 31
  • O my people, I fear for you the Day of Mutual Calling, the day you will turn your backs fleeing, with no protector for you against God; 33
  • and whoever God sends astray has no guide. 33
  • Yusuf certainly came to you before with clear proofs, and you did not cease to be in doubt about what he brought you, until, when he perished, you said: 'God will not send a messenger after him';i 34
  • thus does God send astray whoever is excessive, full of doubt — 34
  • those who dispute concerning the signs of God without any authority having come to them; 35
  • it is a grave thing in detestation, in the sight of God and of those who believe. 35
  • Thus does God seal the core of every arrogant tyrant.i 35
  • Fir'awn said: "O Haman, build me a tower, that I may reach the passages, the passages to the heavens, and glimpse the god of Moussa; I certainly think he is lying."i 37
  • Thus was the evil of his deed made appealing to Fir'awn, and he was turned away from the path;i 37
  • Fir'awn's scheming was nothing but ruin.i 37
  • The one who had believed said: "O my people, follow me; I will guide you to the path of right conduct; 38
  • O my people, the present life is only fleeting enjoyment, 39
  • while the Hereafter is the home of permanence. 39
  • Whoever does an evil deed is repaid only its equivalent, 40
  • and whoever does what is right, male or female, while being a believer, those will enter the Garden, provided for therein without account. 40
  • O my people, why is it that I call you to salvation while you call me to the Fire? 41
  • You call me to deny God and to associate with Him what I have no knowledge of, while I call you to the All-Powerful, the Great Forgiver;i 42
  • there is no doubt that what you call me to has no call in the present life or in the Hereafter, that our return is to God, and that the excessive ones are the companions of the Fire. 43
  • You will soon remember what I say to you; 44
  • I entrust my affair to God; 44
  • God is All-Seeing of His obedient ones. 44
  • So God protected him from the evils of what they schemed, 45
  • and the worst punishment enveloped the clan of Fir'awn:i 45
  • the Fire, to which they are exposed morning and evening, 46
  • and the day the Hour rises: "Admit the clan of Fir'awn into the most severe punishment."i 46
  • And when they dispute with one another in the Fire, the weak will say to those who were arrogant: "We were your followers; can you then spare us a share of the Fire?" 47
  • Those who were arrogant will say: "We are all in it; God has already judged between the obedient ones." 48
  • Those in the Fire will say to the keepers of Jahannam: "Call upon your Guardian to lighten for us, even for one day, the punishment." 49
  • They will say: "Did your messengers not bring you clear proofs?" They will say: "Yes indeed." They will say: "Then call [yourselves]." 50
  • But the calling of those who deny is only in error.i 50
  • We surely help Our messengers and those who believe, in the present life and on the day the witnesses rise, the day the excuse of the wrongdoers will not benefit them; theirs will be the curse, and theirs the worst of homes. 52
  • We certainly gave Moussa the guidance, and made the Children of Israel inherit the Scripture, a guidance and a reminder for those endowed with reason.i 54
  • So be patient: God's promise is truth; 55
  • ask forgiveness for your wrong, and glorify your Guardian with praise, in the evening and the morning. 55
  • Those who dispute concerning the signs of God without any authority having come to them have in their chests nothing but pride they will never attain;i 56
  • so seek refuge in God: 56
  • He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. 56
  • The creation of the heavens and the earth is indeed greater than the creation of mankind, 57
  • but most people do not know. 57
  • The blind and the seeing are not equal, nor are those who believe and do what is right and the evildoer; 58
  • little do you take heed. 58
  • The Hour is surely coming, no doubt about it, 59
  • but most people do not believe. 59
  • Your Guardian has said: "Call upon Me, I will answer you; 60
  • those who are too arrogant to obey Me will soon enter Jahannam, humiliated." 60
  • God is He who made for you the night that you may rest in it, and the day for seeing clearly; 61
  • God is indeed possessor of favor toward mankind, 61
  • but most people are not grateful. 61
  • That is God, your Guardian, 62
  • creator of all things; 62
  • there is no god but Him; 62
  • how then are you turned away? 62
  • Thus are turned away those who used to deny the signs of God. 63
  • God is He who made for you the earth a stable ground and the sky a structure, who shaped you and made your forms excellent, and provided you with good things; 64
  • that is God, your Guardian; 64
  • blessed is God, Guardian of all beings.i 64
  • He is the Living; 65
  • there is no god but Him; 65
  • so call upon Him, devoting the Law exclusively to Him;i 65
  • praise belongs to God, Guardian of all beings. 65
  • Say: "I have been forbidden to obey those you invoke besides God, since the clear proofs have come to me from my Guardian; and I have been commanded to be true to the Guardian of all beings alone."i 66
  • It is He who created you from dust, then from a drop, then from a clinging form, then brings you out as a child, then lets you reach your full strength, then become old men —i 67
  • and some of you die before — so that you may reach an appointed term, and perhaps you will reason. 67
  • It is He who gives life and causes death; 68
  • and when He decrees a matter, He only says to it: "Be," 68
  • and it is. 68
  • Have you not seen those who dispute concerning the signs of God, how they are turned away? 69
  • Those who denied the Scripture and that with which We sent Our messengers will soon know, when the shackles are on their necks, along with the chains,i 71
  • they will be dragged through boiling water, then burned in the fire. 72
  • Then it will be said to them: "Where are those you used to associate besides God?" 74
  • They will say: "They have strayed from us; in fact, we were not calling upon anything before." 74
  • Thus does God send astray those who deny. 74
  • That is for having rejoiced on the earth without right, and for having been insolent; 75
  • enter the gates of Jahannam, to remain therein forever: 76
  • how wretched is the dwelling of the arrogant! 76
  • So be patient: God's promise is truth; 77
  • whether We show you some of what We threaten them with, or We take you in death, it is to Us they will be returned. 77
  • We certainly sent messengers before you; some We have told you about, and some We have not told you about; 78
  • and it is not for any messenger to bring a sign except by God's permission; 78
  • and when God's command comes, it is decided in truth, and there the partisans of falsehood are the losers. 78
  • God is He who made for you the livestock, that you may ride some of them and eat others; 79
  • and you have in them benefits, 80
  • and that you may satisfy on them a need in your chests,i 80
  • and on them, as on ships, you are carried. 80
  • He shows you His signs; 81
  • so which of God's signs do you deny? 81
  • Have they not traveled through the earth to see how the end was of those before them? 82
  • They were more numerous than them and stronger in might and in traces left on the earth; but what they used to earn availed them nothing. 82
  • Then, when their messengers brought them clear proofs, they rejoiced in the knowledge they already possessed; 83
  • and that which they used to mock enveloped them. 83
  • Then, when they saw Our might, they said: "We believe in God alone, and we deny what we used to associate with Him."i 84
  • But their faith did not benefit them once they saw Our might — 85
  • such is God's established way, already past among His obedient ones; 85
  • and there those who used to deny were the losers.i 85
