Al-Hujurat

  • In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. O you who believe, do not put yourselves before God and His messenger.i 1
  • And be mindful of God. 1
  • God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. 1
  • O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, and do not speak loudly to him as you speak loudly to one another, lest your deeds be nullified without your realizing it. 2
  • Those who lower their voices in the presence of the Messenger of God are those whose Cores God has tested for guardedness.i 3
  • They will have forgiveness and an immense reward. 3
  • Those who call out to you from behind the private chambers, most of them do not reason. 4
  • Had they been patient until you came out to them, it would have been better for them. 5
  • God is Forgiving, benevolent. 5
  • O you who believe, if an overstepper brings you news, verify it, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and then become, over what you have done, full of regret. 6
  • Know that the Messenger of God is among you; were he to obey you in many matters, you would be in great difficulty. 7
  • But God has made faith dear to you and made it appealing in your Cores, and has made you detest the denial [of the truth], overstepping, and disobedience. 7
  • Those are the rightly guided, by a favor and a grace from God. 8
  • God knows all, He is Wise. 8
  • And if two groups of believers fight each other, reconcile between them. 9
  • If one of the two commits aggression against the other, fight the one that commits aggression until it returns to the command of God. 9
  • If it returns, reconcile between them with justice, and be equitable. 9
  • God loves the equitable.i 9
  • The believers are but brothers; so reconcile between your two brothers. 10
  • And be mindful of God, so that you may receive benevolence. 10
  • O you who believe, let not a people mock [another] people: it may be that they are better than them; nor let women mock [other] women: it may be that they are better than them. 11
  • Do not disparage yourselves, and do not call each other by offensive nicknames. 11
  • What a wretched name is overstepping, after faith! 11
  • And whoever does not repent, those are the unjust. 11
  • O you who believe, avoid much suspicion. 12
  • For some suspicion is a transgression. 12
  • And do not spy. 12
  • And let none of you backbite another. 12
  • Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would detest it. 12
  • And be mindful of God. 12
  • God accepts repentance, He is benevolent. 12
  • O mankind, We created you from a male and a female, and made you into peoples and tribes, so that you may know one another. 13
  • The most noble of you, with God, is the most pious. 13
  • God knows all, He is perfectly informed. 13
  • The notables said: "We have believed." Say: "You have not believed; rather say: We have become true to God alone," for faith has not yet entered your Cores.i 14
  • And if you obey God and His messenger, He will not diminish your deeds in anything. 14
  • God is Forgiving, benevolent. 14
  • The believers are only those who have believed in God and His messenger, then have not doubted, and have striven with their possessions and their Selves in the way of God. 15
  • Those are the truthful. 15
  • Say: "Do you inform God of your Law, while God knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth?" 16
  • God knows all things. 16
  • They regard it as a favor to you that they have become true to God alone. 17
  • Say: "Do not regard your true adherence to God alone as a favor to me." 17
  • Rather, it is God who bestows a favor upon you in that He has guided you to faith, if you are truthful. 17
  • God knows what escapes the senses in the heavens and the earth.i 18
  • God sees perfectly what you do.i 18
