۞

Al-Ma'ida

  • In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. O you who have believed! keep your engagements.i 1
  • Lawful for you are the beasts of cattle, except what is recited to you — without permitting yourselves the [land] hunt, during the inviolable months.i 1
  • God decides what He wills. 1
  • O you who have believed! do not make licit the perceptible markers of God, nor the inviolable month, nor the voluntary offerings, nor the vow-bound offerings, nor those heading toward the Inviolable House, seeking a favor from their Guardian and a good pleasure.i 2
  • And once these months have passed, hunt. 2
  • And let not the hatred of a people, for having turned you away from the inviolable place of prostration, drive you to transgress. 2
  • Help one another in righteousness and guardedness, 2
  • and do not help one another in transgression and transgression. 2
  • Guard yourselves toward God: 2
  • God is severe in punishment. 2
  • Forbidden to you are: the dead animal, blood, the flesh of swine, that which has been consecrated to other than God, the strangled animal, the animal on the brink of death, the animal in a declining state from illness, the animal dead from a blow of the horn, and what a wild beast has devoured — except what you have purified by fire — as well as the animal slaughtered in common whose shares are then drawn by lot with arrows.i 3
  • That is an overstepping.i 3
  • Today, those who deny-disown despair of your Law; 3
  • so do not fear them, but fear Me. 3
  • Today, I have perfected for you your Law, I have completed My blessing upon you, and I have approved for you being true to God alone as your Law. 3
  • But whoever is compelled by hunger, without inclination to transgression — God is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 3
  • They ask you: what is made lawful for them? 4
  • Say: "Lawful for you are the good things, as well as what you have taught your trained hunting animals, instructing them from what God has taught you. 4
  • So eat of what they catch for you, and mention the name of God over it. 4
  • And guard yourselves toward God: 4
  • God is swift in reckoning." 4
  • Today, the good things are made lawful for you. The food of those to whom the Scripture was given is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. And the contractually protected women among the believers, and the contractually protected women among those to whom the Scripture was given before you, [are lawful for you] when you give them their rewards, as men who bind themselves in contract, not in debauchery nor as takers of secret lovers.i 5
  • And whoever denies the faith, his deed collapses, and he will be, in the last life, among the losers. 5
  • O you who have believed! when you rise for the Contact, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe your heads with wet hands, 6
  • and your feet up to the knees.i 6
  • And if you have soiled yourselves [relieving a need], wash yourselves.i 6
  • And if you are sick, or on a journey, or one of you has come from relieving himself, or you have known a woman in intimacy, and you find no water, then resort to clean earth, and wipe your faces and your hands with it.i 6
  • God does not want to impose any hardship on you, 6
  • but He wants to purify you, and to complete His blessing upon you, perhaps you will be grateful. 6
  • And remember God's blessing upon you, and His engagement, by which He bound you, when you said: "We have heard and we have obeyed." 7
  • And guard yourselves toward God: 7
  • God knows perfectly what is in the chests. 7
  • O you who have believed! be firm supporters for God, bearing witness with equity, 8
  • and let not the hatred of a people drive you to not be equitable. 8
  • Be equitable: it is closer to guardedness. 8
  • And guard yourselves toward God: 8
  • God is well informed of what you do. 8
  • God has promised those who have believed and done righteous deeds: they will have a forgiveness and an immense reward. 9
  • And those who have denied-disowned and denied Our signs — those are the companions of the Blaze. 10
  • O you who have believed! remember God's blessing upon you, when a people had resolved to lay hands on you, and He held their hands back from you. 11
  • And guard yourselves toward God: 11
  • it is upon God that the believers should rely. 11
  • God has indeed taken the engagement of the Children of Israel, and We raised up, among them, twelve leaders. 12
  • And God said: "I am with you. 12
  • If you maintain the Contact, give the purifying alms, believe in My messengers, support them, and make God a beautiful loan, I will certainly cover your evil deeds, and I will certainly admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow. 12
  • But whoever among you denies-disowns after that has strayed from the straight path." 12
  • For having violated their engagement, We cursed them and made their cores hard: they displace words from their context, and have forgotten a part of what they had been reminded of. 13
  • And you will not cease to discover among them a betrayal, except a small number of them. 13
  • So forgive them and overlook: 13
  • God loves those who do good. 13
  • And among those who said: "We are the Helpers", We took their engagement, but they forgot a part of what they had been reminded of; We then stirred up among them enmity and hatred, until the Day of Appearance;i 14
  • and God will soon inform them of what they used to do. 14
  • O people of the Scripture! Our envoy has indeed come to you, making clear to you much of what you were hiding of the Scripture, and passing over much [else].i 15
  • A light has indeed come to you from God, as well as a clear Scripture, by which God guides whoever follows His good pleasure toward the paths of peace,i 16
  • and brings them out of the darknesses toward the light, with His permission, 16
  • and guides them to a straight path. 16
  • They have indeed denied-disowned, those who said: "God, that is Al-Massih, son of Maryam."i 17
  • Say: "Who then would hold any power against God, if He willed to destroy Al-Massih, son of Maryam, and his mother, and all those on the earth?" 17
  • To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and of what is between them. 17
  • He creates what He wills. 17
  • God has power over all things. 17
  • And the Reoriented and the Helpers said: "We are the sons of God and His beloved."i 18
  • Say: "Why then does He punish you for your offenses? 18
  • You are rather humans, among those He created. 18
  • He forgives whom He wills, and He punishes whom He wills." 18
  • To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and of what is between them, 18
  • and to Him is the destination. 18
  • O people of the Scripture! Our envoy has indeed come to you, making [the truth] clear after a break in envoys, lest you say: "No bearer of good tidings nor warner has come to us" — a bearer of good tidings and a warner has thus indeed come to you.i 19
  • God has power over all things. 19
  • And remember when Moussa said to his people: "O my people! remember God's blessing upon you, when He placed among you prophets, and made you kings,i 20
  • and gave you what He gave to none other among all beings.i 20
  • O my people! enter the sanctified land that God has destined for you, 21
  • and do not turn back, lest you be returned as losers." 21
  • They said: "O Moussa! there is there a people of tyrants,i 22
  • and we will not enter it until they have left it; 22
  • if they leave it, then we will enter it." 22
  • Two men, among those who feared [God], to whom God had granted His blessing, said: "Enter upon them by the gate; 23
  • once you have entered it, you will certainly be the victors. 23
  • And it is upon God that you should rely, if you are believers." 23
  • They said: "O Moussa! we will never enter it, as long as they remain there; go, then, you and your Guardian, and fight, both of you; we, we will stay here, sitting."i 24
  • He said: "My Guardian, I hold power only over my own Selfi 25
  • and my brother; 25
  • so separate us from the people of the oversteppers." 25
  • He said: "It is, then, forbidden to them, forever,i 26
  • forty years, wandering on the earth.i 26
  • So do not grieve for the people of the oversteppers." 26
  • And recite to them, in truth, the information of the two sons of Adam, when each offered an offering: it was accepted from one, and was not accepted from the other.i 27
  • The latter said: "I will certainly kill you." 27
  • The former said: "God accepts only from those who guard themselves. 27
  • If you stretch out your hand toward me to kill me, I will not stretch out my hand toward you to kill you; 28
  • I fear God, Guardian of all beings. 28
  • I want you to return burdened with my transgression and yours, and to be among the companions of the Fire: 29
  • that is the reward of the unjust." 29
  • But his own Self disposed him to the murder of his brother; he killed him, and thus became among the losers. 30
  • God then sent a raven, which scratched the earth, to show him how to conceal his brother's nakedness. 31
  • He said: "Woe to me! am I unable to be like this raven, and to conceal my brother's nakedness?" And he then became among those who regret. 32
  • That is why We prescribed for the Children of Israel that whoever kills a Self, without it being for [another] Self, or for corruption on the earth, it is as if he had killed all mankind together, 32
  • and whoever gives life to one [Self], it is as if he had given life to all mankind together. 32
  • Our envoys indeed came to them with clear proofs; then many of them, after that, are indeed excessive on the earth. 32
  • The only reward of those who wage war against God and His Messenger, and strive to sow corruption on the earth, is that they be killed, or crucified, or have their hands and feet cut off on opposite sides, or be banished from the earth. 33
  • That is for them a humiliation in the present life, 33
  • and they will have, in the last life, an immense punishment — except those who turn back [to God] before you have power over them; know then that God is Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 34
  • O you who have believed! guard yourselves toward God, seek toward Him the means [of nearness], and strive in His way, perhaps you will succeed. 35
  • Those who deny-disown, were they to possess all that is on earth, and its equivalent with it, to ransom themselves from the punishment of the Day of Appearance, it would not be accepted from them, 36
  • and they will have a painful punishment. 36
  • They will want to leave the Fire, but they will not leave it, 37
  • and they will have a lasting punishment. 37
  • And as for the thief, male and female, stop their supports, as a reward for what they have earned, as an exemplary punishment from God.i 38
  • God is All-Powerful, Wise. 38
  • But whoever turns back [to God] after his injustice, and reforms, God turns toward him with clemency. 39
  • God is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 39
  • Do you not know that to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth? 40
  • He punishes whom He wills, and He forgives whom He wills. 40
  • God has power over all things. 40
  • O messenger! let not those grieve you who hasten into denial-disowning, among those who say: "We have believed" with their mouths, without their cores having believed, 41
  • nor among the Reoriented, listeners to falsehood, listeners on behalf of another people who has not come to you. 41
  • They displace words from their context, saying: "If you are given this, take it; and if you are not given it, beware." 41
  • And whoever God wants to put to the trial, you hold nothing for him against God. 41
  • Those are the ones whose cores God has not wanted to purify. 41
  • They have, in the present life, a humiliation, 41
  • and they will have, in the last life, an immense punishment. 41
  • Listeners to falsehood, devourers of illicit gain —i 42
  • if they come to you, judge between them, then, or turn away from them; 42
  • and if you turn away from them, they cannot harm you at all. 42
  • And if you judge, judge then between them with equity: 42
  • God loves the equitable. 42
  • And how would they take you as judge, when they have the Tawrah, wherein is the judgment of God, and then they turn away from it? 43
  • These are not believers. 43
  • We indeed sent down the Tawrah, wherein is guidance and light; the prophets, who were true to God alone, judged by it the Reoriented, as did the spiritual masters and the rabbis, according to what they were entrusted to guard of God's Scripture, and they were witnesses to it.i 44
  • So do not fear people, but fear Me, 44
  • and do not buy, with My signs, a paltry price.i 44
  • And those who do not judge according to what God has sent down — those are the deniers. 44
  • And We prescribed for them, in it: the Self in exchange for the Self, the eye in exchange for the eye, the nose in exchange for the nose, the ear in exchange for the ear, the tooth in exchange for the tooth, and for wounds, an investigation.i 45
  • But whoever forgoes it as charity, it serves as an expiation for him. 45
  • And those who do not judge according to what God has sent down — those are the unjust. 45
  • And We made Issa, son of Maryam, follow in their footsteps, confirming what, of the Tawrah, preceded him, 46
  • and We gave him the Injil, wherein is guidance and light, confirming what, of the Tawrah, preceded him, and a guidance and an admonition for those who guard themselves. 46
  • And let the people of the Injil judge according to what God sent down in it. 47
  • And those who do not judge according to what God has sent down — those are the oversteppers. 47
  • And We have sent down to you the Scripture, in truth, confirming what, of the Scripture, preceded it, and prevailing over it.i 48
  • Judge, then, between them according to what God has sent down, 48
  • and do not follow their emotions, forsaking what has come to you of the truth. 48
  • To each of you, We have assigned a law and a way. 48
  • And had God willed, He would have made you one community; 48
  • but [He did not], so as to try you in what He has given you. 48
  • Race, then, to good deeds. 48
  • To God will be your return, all together, and He will inform you of what you used to differ over. 48
  • And: judge between them according to what God has sent down, 49
  • and do not follow their emotions, 49

  • And those who have believed will say: "Are these the ones who swore by God, with the utmost strength of their oaths, to be indeed with you?" Their works have collapsed, and they have found themselves losers. 53

  • O you who have believed! whoever among you abandons his Law — God will bring a people whom He loves and who love Him, humble toward the believers, firm toward those who deny-disown, striving in the way of God, and fearing not the blame of any blamer.i 54

  • And the Reoriented said: "God's hand is chained." 64
  • May their hands be chained, and may they be cursed for what they have said! 64
  • No, His two hands are wide open: He spends as He wills. 64

  • And Al-Massih said: "O children of Israel! obey God, my Guardian and your Guardian. 72
  • Whoever associates other deities with God, God indeed forbids him the Garden, and his refuge will be the Fire." 72

  • And the unjust have no helpers. 72
  • They have indeed denied-disowned, those who said: "God is the third of three." 73
  • But there is no deity except one deity. 73
  • And if they do not cease what they say, a painful punishment will certainly touch those among them who have denied-disowned. 73

  • That is because they disobeyed and transgressed. 78

  • and you will certainly find that the closest in affection toward those who have believed are those who say: "We are the Helpers." 82
  • That is because there are, among them, priests and monks, and they are not arrogant. 82
  • And when they hear what has been revealed to the messenger, you see their eyes overflow with tears, for having recognized the truth; they say: "Our Guardian, we have believed; inscribe us, then, among the witnesses. 83
  • And what reason would we have not to believe in God, and in what has come to us of the truth, when we long for our Guardian to admit us with the righteous people?" 84
  • God then rewarded them, for what they said, with gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally. 85
  • That is the reward of those who do good. 85
  • And those who have denied-disowned and denied Our signs — those are the companions of the Blaze. 86
  • O you who have believed! do not forbid the good things God has made lawful for you, and do not transgress: 87
  • God does not love the transgressors. 87

  • And keep your oaths. 89
  • Thus does God make His signs clear to you, perhaps you will be grateful. 89
  • O you who have believed! the combination of wine and games of chance, as well as the sharing by lot of common goods, are nothing but a defilement, the work of the Diverter; avoid them, then, perhaps you will succeed.i 90
  • The Diverter wants only to cast, among you, by wine and games of chance, enmity and hatred, and to turn you away from the remembrance of God and from the Contact.i 91
  • Will you then cease? 91
  • And obey God, and obey the messenger, and beware. 92
  • But if you turn away, know then that only the clear transmission is incumbent upon Our messenger. 92
  • No blame upon those who have believed and done righteous deeds, for what they have tasted, so long as they guarded themselves, believed, and did righteous deeds, then guarded themselves and believed, then guarded themselves and did good.i 93
  • God loves those who do good. 93
  • O you who have believed! God will certainly try you with some game that your hands and your spears will reach, so that God may know who fears Him without perceiving Him.i 94
  • Whoever transgresses after that will have a painful punishment. 94
  • O you who have believed! do not kill game during the inviolable months. 95

  • God has made the Ka'ba, the Inviolable House, a support [of stability] for mankind, as well as the inviolable month, the voluntary offerings, and the vow-bound offerings.i 97
  • That, so that you may know that God knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth, and that God is, of all things, All-Knowing. 97
  • Know that God is severe in punishment, and that God is Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 98

  • O you who have believed! testimony between you, when death presents itself to one of you, at the time of the testament: two equitable [persons] among you, or two others, outside your circle, if you are traveling on the earth and the calamity of death strikes you.i 106
