۞
Al-An'am
-
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Praise be to God, who created the heavens and the earth, and made the darknesses and the light; yet those who deny-disown set up equals to their Guardian.i 1
It is He who created you from clay, then decreed a term — 2
and a fixed term, with Him. 2
Yet still you doubt. 2
And He is God, 3
in the heavens and on the earth; He knows your secret and your public, and He knows what you earn. 3
No sign, among the signs of their Guardian, comes to them without their turning away from it. 4
So they have denied the truth, when it came to them; 5
the information of what they used to mock will soon reach them. 5
Do they not see how many generations We destroyed before them, whom We had established on the earth as We have not established you, 6
and to whom We sent the sky in abundant rains, 6
and We made the rivers flow beneath them; then We destroyed them for their offenses, 6
and We raised up, after them, another generation. 6
And had We sent down upon you a writing on parchment, and they had touched it with their hands, those who deny-disown would certainly have said: "This is nothing but a manifest illusion."i 7
And they say: "Why has an Agent not been sent down upon him!"i 8
And had We sent down an Agent, the matter would already have been settled, and they would be granted no delay.i 8
And had We made him an Agent, We would have made him a man, and We would have clothed him in what they themselves wear.i 9
Messengers before you were indeed mocked; then what they used to mock enveloped those among them who scoffed. 10
Say: "Travel through the land, then look how the end of those who denied was." 11
Say: "To whom belongs what is in the heavens and on the earth?" Say: "To God. 12
He has prescribed benevolence upon Himself. 12
He will certainly gather you on the Day of Appearance, no doubt possible. 12
Those who will have caused the loss of their Selves, those are the ones who do not believe." 12
To Him belongs what rests in the night and the day; 13
He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. 13
Say: "Should I take a protector other than God, the Originator of the heavens and the earth,i 14
It is He who nourishes and is not nourished." 14
Say: "I have been commanded to be the first of those who are true to God alone", 14
and never be among those who associate. 14
Say: "I fear, if I disobey my Guardian, the punishment of a tremendous day." 15
Whoever is turned away from it, on that day, He will have shown him benevolence, 16
and that is the manifest triumph. 16
And if God touches you with harm, none can remove it but Him; 17
and if He touches you with good, He has power over all things. 17
He prevails above His obedient ones, 18
and He is the Wise, the Informed. 18
Say: "What thing is greatest in testimony?" Say: "God, 19
witness between me and you. 19
And this Recitation was revealed to me so that I might warn you by it, and whoever it reaches. 19
Do you truly bear witness that there are, with God, other deities?" Say: "I do not bear witness [to that]." 19
Say: "He is only one deity, 19
and I disavow what you associate [with Him]." 19
Those to whom We gave the Scripture recognize him as they recognize their own children;i 20
those who will have caused the loss of their Selves, those are the ones who do not believe. 20
Who is then more unjust than one who invents a lie against God, or denies His signs? 21
The unjust do not succeed. 21
And the day when We gather them all together, then say to those who associated: "Where are your associates, whom you used to claim?" 22
Then their only escape will be to say: "By God, our Guardian, we were not among those who associate." 23
Look how they lie against themselves! And what they used to invent will have forsaken them. 24
And among them are some who listen to you, 25
but We have placed over their cores coverings, so that they do not understand it, and in their ears a deafness. 25
And even if they saw every sign, they would not believe in it, 25
to the point that, when they come to you to dispute, those who deny-disown say: "These are nothing but legends of the ancients." 25
And they forbid it [to others], and they distance themselves [from it]; 26
and they ruin none but themselves, without perceiving it. 26
And if you could see, when they will be placed before the Fire, and say: "Ah, if only we were sent back, 27
and no longer denied the signs of our Guardian, and were among the believers!" 27
No! what they used to hide before has become apparent to them. 28
And were they sent back, they would certainly return to what they had been forbidden, 28
for they are indeed liars. 28
And they say: "There is nothing but our present life, and we will not be resurrected." 29
And if you could see, when they will be placed before their Guardian! He will say: "Is this not the truth?" 30
They will say: "Yes, by our Guardian!" 30
He will say: "Taste then the punishment, for having denied-disowned." 30
They are indeed losers, those who have denied the meeting with God, to the point that, when the Hour comes upon them unexpectedly, they say: "What regret for us, for what we neglected in it!" They will bear their burdens on their backs. 31
How evil is what they weigh themselves down with! 31
The present life is nothing but play and diversion; 32
and the last abode is indeed better for those who guard themselves. 32
Will you not then reason? 32
We know well that what they say grieves you; 33
but it is not you they deny, 33
but it is the signs of God that the unjust deny. 33
Messengers were indeed denied before you; they endured this denial and these persecutions, until Our help came to them. 34
No [force] can change the words of God. 34
Some of the information about the envoys has indeed already reached you. 34
And if their turning away weighs upon you, then, if you have the capacity, seek a tunnel into the earth, or a ladder into the sky, to bring them a sign. 35
Had God willed, He would have gathered them upon guidance; 35
so never be among the ignorant. 35
Only those who hear respond. 36
As for the dead, God will resurrect them, 36
then it is to Him that they will be returned. 36
And they say: "Why has a sign from his Guardian not been sent down upon him!" 37
Say: "God is capable of sending down a sign", 37
but most of them do not know. 37
There is no living being on the earth, nor bird flying with its two wings, but forms communities like you. 38
We have neglected nothing of the Code.i 38
Then it is to their Guardian that they will be gathered. 38
And those who have denied Our signs are deaf and mute, in darknesses. 39
Whoever God wills to lead astray, He leads astray; 39
and whoever He wills [to guide], He places on a straight path. 39
Say: "What do you think? If the punishment of God came upon you, or the Hour came upon you, would you invoke other than God, if you are truthful?" 40
In reality, it is Him you would invoke; He would then remove, if He willed, that for which you invoked Him, and you would forget what you associate [with Him]. 41
We have indeed sent [messengers] to communities before you, and We seized them with misfortune and hardship, that they might humble themselves. 42
Why did they not humble themselves, when Our rigor came upon them! 43
But their cores hardened, and the Diverter embellished for them what they were doing.i 43
Then, when they forgot what they had been reminded of, We opened upon them the gates of everything, 44
to the point that, when they rejoiced in what had been given them, We seized them by surprise, and there they were, in despair. 44
Thus was the last remnant of the people who had been unjust cut off. 45
And praise be to God, Guardian of all beings.i 45
Say: "What do you think? If God took your hearing and your sight, and sealed your cores, what deity, other than God, would bring them back to you?" 46
Look how We diversify the signs, and yet they turn away from them. 46
Say: "What do you think? If the punishment of God came upon you, unexpectedly or openly, who would be destroyed, but the unjust people?" 47
We send the envoys only as bearers of good tidings and warners. 48
Whoever believes and reforms, no fear upon them, and they will not grieve. 48
And those who have denied Our signs, the punishment will touch them, for having overstepped. 49
Say: "I do not tell you that I hold the treasures of God, nor that I know what escapes the senses, nor do I tell you that I am an Agent;i 50
I only follow what is revealed to me." 50
Say: "Are the blind and the seeing equal?" 50
Will you not then reflect? 50
And warn by it those who fear to be gathered to their Guardian — they have, besides Him, neither protector nor intercessor — perhaps they will guard themselves. 51
And do not turn away those who invoke their Guardian, morning and evening, seeking His direction. Nothing of their account is upon you, and nothing of your account is upon them, that you should turn them away and then be among the unjust. 52
And thus have We tried some of them by others, that they might say: "Is it then these whom God has favored among us?" 53
Is God not most knowing of those who are grateful? 53
And when those who believe in Our signs come to you, say: "Peace be upon you. 54
Your Guardian has prescribed benevolence upon Himself: whoever among you commits evil out of ignorance, then repents after that and reforms — He is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence." 54
Thus do We detail the signs, so that the path of the severed may become clearly apparent.i 55
Say: "I have been forbidden to obey those you invoke besides God." 56
Say: "I do not follow your emotions;i 56
I would then be astray, and I would not be among the rightly guided." 56
Say: "I rely on clear evidence from my Guardian, and you have denied it. 57
I do not hold what you seek to hasten. 57
Judgment belongs only to God. 57
He relates the truth, 57
and He is the best of those who judge." 57
Say: "If I held what you seek to hasten, the matter would already have been settled between me and you." 58
God knows best the unjust. 58
He holds the keys of what escapes the senses: none knows them, save Him.i 59
And He knows what is on land and in the sea. 59
No leaf falls but He knows it; no grain, in the darknesses of the earth, nothing moist or dry, that is not in a clear register.i 59
It is He who takes you back to Himself, by night, and knows what you accomplish by day, then He resurrects you in it, so that a fixed term may be fulfilled; 60
then to Him will be your return, and He will inform you of what you used to do. 60
He prevails above His obedient ones, 61
and He sends upon you guardians, 61
to the point that, when death comes to one of you, Our envoys take him back [to Him], never failing. 61
Then they are returned to God, their true Protector. 62
Is it not to Him that judgment belongs? 62
He is the swiftest of those who take account. 62
Say: "Who saves you from the darknesses of land and sea?" — you invoke Him humbly and in secret: "If You save us from this, we will certainly be among the grateful." 63
Say: "God saves you from it, and from every distress; yet you associate [others with Him]." 64
Say: "He is capable of raising up against you a punishment, from above you or from beneath your feet, or of mixing you into rival factions, and making some of you taste the violence of others." 65
Look how We diversify the signs, perhaps they will understand. 65
But your people have denied it, though it is the truth. 66
Say: "I am not, for you, a trustee-agent. 66
Every piece of information has a place of fulfillment, 67
and you will soon know." 67
And when you see those who wade into idle talk about Our signs, turn away from them, until they move on to another subject. 68
And if the Diverter makes you forget, do not remain, after this reminder, with the unjust people.i 68
And nothing, of the account of those who guard themselves, is incumbent upon them, 69
except a reminder, perhaps they will guard themselves. 69
And leave those who have taken their Law for amusement and play, and whom the present life has deceived. 70
And remind by it, lest a Self be delivered [to ruin] for what it has earned, having, besides God, neither protector nor intercessor; 70
and even if it offered every compensation, it would not be accepted from it. 70
Those are the ones who will have been delivered [to ruin] for what they have earned; they will have a scalding drink and a painful punishment, for having denied-disowned. 70
Say: "Should we invoke, besides God, what neither benefits nor harms us, and be turned back on our heels after God has guided us, like one whom the diverters have lured on earth, bewildered,i 71
while he has companions who call him to guidance: Come to us?" 71
Say: "The guidance of God, that is the [true] guidance; and we have been commanded to be true to the Guardian of all beings alone, and to maintain the Contact, and to guard ourselves toward Him." 72
And it is to Him that you will be gathered. 72
It is He who created the heavens and the earth in truth, 73
and the day He says: "Be", 73
it is. 73
His word is the truth, 73
and to Him belongs the dominion, 73
the day the Trumpet is blown.i 73
Knower of what escapes the senses and of what is manifest,i 73
He is the Wise, the Informed. 73
And remember when Ibrahim said to his father Azar: "Do you take idols as deities?i 74
I see you indeed, you and your people, in manifest error." 74
Thus did We show Ibrahim the sovereign dominion of the heavens and the earth, that he might be among those who possess certainty.i 75
When the night enveloped him, he saw a star; he said: "This is my guardian"; 76
but when it disappeared, he said: "I do not love those that disappear." 76
Then, when he saw the moon rising, he said: "This is my guardian"; 77
but when it disappeared, he said: "If my Guardian does not guide me, I will certainly be among the astray people." 77
Then, when he saw the sun rising, he said: "This is my guardian, this one is greater"; 78
but when it disappeared, he said: "O my people! I disavow what you associate [with Him]. 78
I have set my direction, without deviation, toward the One who brought forth the heavens and the earth, 79
and I am not among those who associate." 79
And his people disputed with him.i 80
He said: "Do you dispute with me about God, when He has guided me? 80
And I do not fear what you associate with Him, unless my Guardian wills something. 80
My Guardian encompasses all things in His knowledge. 80
Will you not then be reminded? 80
And how should I fear what you associate [with Him], 81
while you do not fear having associated with God that for which He has sent down upon you no authority? 81
Which of the two groups, then, is more worthy of security, if you know?" 81
Those who have believed and have not mixed their faith with any injustice — those are the ones who have security, and they are rightly guided. 82
And that is Our argument, which We gave to Ibrahim against his people.i 83
We raise in degrees whom We will. 83
Your Guardian is indeed Wise, All-Knowing. 83
And We gave him Ishaq and Yaacoub; 84
We guided them both. 84
And Nuh, We had guided him before;i 84
and among his descendants, Dawud, Sulayman, Ayyub, Youssof, Moussa, and Harun.i 84
Thus do We reward those who do good. 84
And Zakariya, Yahya, Issa, and Ilyas — 85
all are among the righteous. 85
And Isma'il, Al-Yasa', Younes, and Lut —i 86
and all of them, We favored above all beings. 86
And among their ancestors, their descendants, and their brothers — 87
We chose them, and We guided them to a straight path. 87
That is the guidance of God, by which He guides whom He wills among His obedient ones. 88
And had they associated, what they were doing would have collapsed for them. 88
Those are the ones to whom We gave the Scripture, the judgment, and the prophecy.i 89
So if these [the deniers] deny it, We have already entrusted it to a people who are not deniers of it. 89
Those are the ones God has guided; follow, then, their guidance. 90
Say: "I do not ask you, for this, any wage. 90
It is only a reminder for all beings." 90
They did not measure God with His true measure, when they said: "God has sent nothing down upon a human." 91
Say: "Who sent down the Scripture that Moussa brought, a light and a guidance for mankind,i 91
which you put on parchments, showing some and hiding much —i 91
and you were taught what you did not know, neither you nor your ancestors?" Say: "God"; 91
then leave them, in their vain talk, to amuse themselves. 91
And here is a Scripture We have sent down, blessed, confirming what precedes it, so that you may warn the metropolis of cities and those around it.i 92
Those who believe in the last life believe in it, and they are watchful over their Contact. 92
Who is then more unjust than one who invents a lie against God, or says: "It has been revealed to me", when nothing has been revealed to him, and one who says: "I will send down the like of what God has sent down"? 93
And if you could see, when the unjust are in the throes of death, and the Agents stretch out their hands: "Bring forth your Self.i 93
Today, you will be rewarded with the punishment of humiliation, for having said about God other than the truth, and for having been arrogant before His signs." 93
Here you have come to Us alone, as We created you the first time, and you have left behind what We had entrusted you with; 94
and We do not see with you your intercessors, whom you claimed to be associates among you. 94
The bonds between you are indeed severed, and what you claimed has forsaken you. 94
God is He who splits open the seed and the kernel. 95
He brings forth the living from the dead, and He brings forth the dead from the living. 95
That is God. 95
How then can you be turned away? 95
He who makes the dawn split forth, and who made the night a rest, 96
and of the sun and the moon, a reckoning. 96
That is the measure set by the All-Powerful, the All-Knowing. 96
And it is He who made for you the stars, so that you might guide yourselves by them in the darknesses of land and sea. 97
We have indeed detailed the signs for a people who know. 97
And it is He who brought you forth from a single Self — then a dwelling and a repository. 98
We have indeed detailed the signs for a people who understand. 98
And it is He who sent down water from the sky, and We brought forth by it the vegetation of every kind, and We brought forth from it a greenery, from which We bring forth grain in clustered ears, and, from the palm tree, from its spathe, clusters within reach, and gardens of vines, the olive and the pomegranate, resembling and not resembling. 99
Look at its fruit, when it bears fruit, and its ripening. 99
There are indeed signs in that for a people who believe. 99
And they made, of the Occulted, associates to God, though He created them;i 100
and they invented for Him, without any knowledge, sons and daughters. 100
Glory be to Him! He is far above what they describe. 100
Unprecedented Creator of the heavens and the earth. 101
How would He have a child, when He has no companion, 101
and He created every thing, 101
and He is, of all things, All-Knowing? 101
That is God, your Guardian. 102
There is no deity but Him, 102
Creator of every thing; 102
obey Him, then. 102
He is, over all things, a trustee-agent. 102
Sights do not reach Him, 103
but He reaches sights. 103
He is the Subtle, the Informed. 103
Insights have indeed come to you from your Guardian. 104
Whoever sees clearly, it is for himself; and whoever remains blind, it is to his own detriment. 104
And I am not, for you, a guardian. 104
And thus do We diversify the signs; and so that they say: "You have studied [all this]", and so that We may make it clear for a people who know. 105
Follow what is revealed to you from your Guardian. 106
There is no deity but Him, 106
and turn away from those who associate. 106
Had God willed, they would not have associated. 107
And We have not made you their guardian, 107
and you are not for them a trustee-agent. 107
And do not insult those they invoke besides God, lest they insult God out of hostility, without knowledge. 108
Thus have We embellished, for every community, its deeds; 108
then to their Guardian will be their return, and He will inform them of what they used to do. 108
And they swore by God, with the utmost strength of their oaths, that if a sign came to them, they would certainly believe in it. 109
Say: "The signs are only with God"; 109
and what makes you perceive 109
that, even coming, they would not believe in it? 109
And We turn about their Consciences and their sights, as they did not believe in it the first time, and We leave them, in their tyranny, to wander blindly. 110
And even had We sent down to them the Agents, and the dead had spoken to them, and We had gathered before them everything, face to face, they would not have believed, unless God willed it;i 111
but most of them are ignorant. 111
And thus have We assigned to every prophet an enemy: the diverters among humans and the Occulted, who inspire one another with embellished speech, by deception.i 112
And had your Guardian willed, they would not have done it; 112
leave them, then, and what they invent. 112
And [this,] so that the Consciences of those who do not believe in the last life may incline toward it, and that they may be satisfied with it, and commit what they are to commit. 113
Should I then seek a judge other than God, when it is He who sent down to you the Scripture, detailed?i 114
And those to whom We gave the Scripture know that it was sent down from your Guardian in truth;i 114
so never be among those who doubt. 114
And the word of your Guardian has been fulfilled, in truth and in equity. 115
No [force] can change His words, 115
and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. 115
And if you obey most of those on the earth, they will lead you astray from the path of God. 116
They follow nothing but conjecture, 116
and they do nothing but engage in baseless guesswork. 116
Your Guardian knows best who strays from His path, 117
and He knows best the rightly guided. 117
Eat, then, of that over which the name of God has been mentioned, if you are believers in His signs. 118
And what is with you that you should not eat of that over which the name of God has been mentioned, when He has detailed for you what He has forbidden you, except what you are compelled to? 119
And many lead [others] astray by their emotions, without knowledge. 119
Your Guardian knows best the transgressors. 119
And forsake transgression, apparent and hidden. 120
Those who acquire transgression will be rewarded for what they used to commit. 120
And do not eat of that over which the name of God has not been mentioned: it is indeed a transgression. 121
And the diverters indeed inspire their allies to dispute with you;i 121
and if you obeyed them, you would indeed be among those who associate. 121
Is he who was dead, and to whom We gave life, and for whom We made a light with which he walks among people, like him whose likeness is to be in darknesses, unable to emerge from them? 122
Thus were embellished, for those who deny-disown, the deeds they used to do. 122
And thus have We placed, in every city, the greatest of its severed, so that they might scheme [evil] there; 123
but they scheme only against themselves, without perceiving it. 123
And when a sign comes to them, they say: "We will not believe, until we are given the like of what was given to the messengers of God." 124
God knows best where to place His message. 124
A humiliation before God, and a severe punishment, will befall those who cut themselves off, for having schemed. 124
Whomever God wants to guide, He opens his chest to being true to God alone;i 125
and whomever He wants to lead astray, He makes his chest narrow and constricted, as if he were ascending into the sky. 125
Thus does God place defilement upon those who do not believe. 125
And that is the path of your Guardian, straight. 126
We have indeed detailed the signs for a people who take heed. 126
They have the Abode of Peace, with their Guardian, 127
and He is their Protector, for what they used to do. 127
And the day He gathers them all: "O assembly of the Occulted! you have indeed made much use of humans";i 128
and their allies among humans will say: "Our Guardian, we enjoyed one another, and we have reached our term, the one You had set for us." 128
He will say: "The Fire is your abode, you abide therein eternally" — except what God wills. 128
Your Guardian is indeed Wise, All-Knowing. 128
And thus do We make the unjust allies to one another, for what they used to earn. 129
"O assembly of the Occulted and humans! did messengers from among you not come to you, relating My signs to you and warning you of the meeting of this day of yours?"i 130
They will say: "We bear witness against ourselves"; 130
and the present life deceived them, and they will bear witness against themselves that they were denying-disowning. 130
That is because it is not in the nature of your Guardian to destroy cities unjustly, while their inhabitants were heedless. 131
And to each, degrees, according to what they did. 132
And your Guardian is not heedless of what they do. 132
And your Guardian is self-sufficient, possessor of benevolence. 133
If He wills, He makes you disappear, and He makes succeed after you what He wills, as He brought you forth from the descendants of another people. 133
What is promised to you will certainly come, 134
and you will not be able to render [Him] powerless. 134
Say: "O my people! act according to your position; I too am acting. 135
You will soon know to whom will belong the happy end of the abode. 135
The unjust do not succeed." 135
And they assigned to God, of what He caused to grow as crops and cattle, a share, saying: "This is for God" — according to their claim — "and this is for our associates"; 136
and what is destined for their associates does not reach God, 136
while what is destined for God, that reaches their associates. 136
How evil is what they decide! 136
And thus have their associates embellished, for many of the associators, the killing of their children, so as to ruin them and confuse their Law for them. 137
And had God willed, they would not have done it; 137
leave them, then, and what they invent. 137
And they said: "This is cattle and crops forbidden: none shall eat of them, except whom we wish" — according to their claim — "and cattle whose backs are made forbidden", and cattle over which they do not mention the name of God, in invention against Him.i 138
He will reward them for what they used to invent. 138
And they said: "What is in the belly of this cattle is reserved exclusively for our males, and forbidden to our wives";i 139
but if it is a stillborn, they all share in it. 139
He will reward them for their attribution. 139
He is Wise, All-Knowing. 139
They are indeed losers, those who killed their children out of foolishness, without knowledge, and who forbade what God had provided them as sustenance, in invention against God. 140
They went astray, and they were not rightly guided. 140
And it is He who brought forth gardens, trellised and untrellised, as well as the palm tree and crops, of varied produce, and the olive and the pomegranate, resembling and not resembling. 141
Eat of its fruit, when it bears fruit, and pay its due, on the day of its harvest, 141
but do not waste: 141
He does not love the wasteful. 141
And among the cattle, there are the beasts of burden and those of the fleece. 142
Eat of what God has provided you as sustenance, 142
and do not follow the footsteps of the Diverter:i 142
he is for you a manifest enemy. 142
Eight [head], in pairs: 143
of sheep, two, and of goats, two. 143
Say: "Is it the two males He has forbidden, or the two females, or what the wombs of the two females contain? 143
Inform me with full knowledge, if you are truthful." 143
And of camelids, two, and of cattle, two. 144
Say: "Is it the two males He has forbidden, or the two females, or what the wombs of the two females contain? 144
Or were you witnesses, when God prescribed this to you?" 144
Who is then more unjust than one who invents a lie against God, to lead people astray without knowledge? 144
God does not guide the unjust people. 144
Say: "I find, in what has been revealed to me, nothing forbidden to one who wants to eat it, except that it be a dead animal, or spilled blood, or the flesh of swine — for that is a defilement — 145
or a transgression consecrated to other than God. 145
But whoever is compelled to it, without being rebellious or transgressing — your Guardian is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence." 145
And to the Reoriented, We forbade every [animal] with an uncloven hoof: and of cattle and sheep, 146
We forbade them their fats, except what their backs carry, or the entrails, or what is mixed with a bone. 146
Thus did We reward them for their transgression, 146
and We are indeed truthful. 146
If they deny you, say then: "Your Guardian is possessor of a vast benevolence, 147
and His rigor will not be turned away from the severed people." 147
Those who have associated will say: "Had God willed, we would not have associated, nor would our ancestors, and we would not have forbidden anything." 148
Thus did those before them deny, until they tasted Our rigor. 148
Say: "Do you have any knowledge, that you could bring forth for us? 148
You follow nothing but conjecture, 148
and you do nothing but engage in baseless guesswork." 148
Say: "To God belongs the conclusive argument. 149
Had He willed, He would have guided you all." 149
Say: "Bring your witnesses, those who testify that God has forbidden this." 150
If they testify, do not testify with them, 150
and do not follow the emotions of those who have denied Our signs, and of those who do not believe in the last life, and who set up equals to their Guardian. 150
Say: "Come, let me recite what your Guardian has forbidden you: do not associate anything with Him; 151
kindness toward both parents; 151
and do not kill your children out of poverty — 151
it is We who provide for you, and for them; 151
and do not approach indecencies, apparent or hidden; 151
and do not kill the Self that God has made inviolable, except in right; 151
that is what He has recommended to you, perhaps you will reason. 151
And do not approach the wealth of the orphan, except in the best way, until he reaches his full maturity; 152
and give full measure and full weight, with equity — 152
We impose upon no Self except its capacity — 152
and when you speak, be equitable, even toward a relative; 152
and keep the engagement of God: 152
that is what He has recommended to you, perhaps you will take heed. 152
And: this is My path, straight; follow it, then, 153
and do not follow the [other] paths, which would scatter you away from His path: 153
that is what He has recommended to you, perhaps you will guard yourselves. 153
Then We gave Moussa the Scripture, as a fulfillment toward him who does good, as a detail of every thing, as a guidance and a benevolence, that they might believe in the meeting with their Guardian.i 154
And here is a Scripture We have sent down, blessed; follow it, then, and guard yourselves, perhaps benevolence will be shown to you — lest you say: "The Scripture was sent down only upon two groups before us, and we were indeed heedless of their study", or lest you say: "Had the Scripture been sent down upon us, we would have been better guided than they."i 157
A clear proof has thus come to you from your Guardian, as well as a guidance and a benevolence. 157
Who is then more unjust than one who has denied the signs of God and turned away from them? 157
We will reward those who turn away from Our signs with the worst punishment, for having turned away from them. 157
Do they await only that the Agents come to them, or that your Guardian come, or that some signs of your Guardian come?i 158
On the day certain signs of your Guardian come, the faith of a Self will not benefit it, if it did not believe before, or acquired, in its faith, no good. 158
Say: "Wait: 158
we are waiting." 158
Those who have divided their Law and become sects, you are in no way linked to them. 159
Their matter rests only with God, 159
then He will inform them of what they used to do. 159
Whoever comes with the good deed has a right to ten times its equivalent, 160
and whoever comes with the evil deed is rewarded only with its equivalent, without being wronged. 160
Say: "My Guardian has guided me to a straight path, 161
an upright Law, the doctrine of Ibrahim, wholly turned toward God;i 161
and he was not among those who associate." 161
Say: "My Contact, my beneficent commitment, my life, and my death belong to God, Guardian of all beings; no associate to Him. 163
And thus have I been commanded, 163
and I am the first of those true to God alone." 163
Say: "Should I seek a guardian other than God, when He is the Guardian of every thing?" 164
And every Self acquires [evil] only to its own detriment, 164
and no [Self] burdened bears the burden of another. 164
Then to your Guardian will be your return, and He will inform you of what you used to differ over. 164
And it is He who made you successors on the earth, and raised some of you above others in degrees, so as to try you in what He has given you. 165
Your Guardian is indeed swift in punishment, 165
and He is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 165
