Oaths as a Shield
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. When the hypocrites come to you, they say: We testify that you are surely the messenger of God.
بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم إذا جآءك ٱلمنفقون قالوا نشهد إنك لرسول ٱللهAnd God knows that you are surely His messenger.
وٱلله يعلم إنك لرسولهAnd God testifies that the hypocrites are surely liars.
وٱلله يشهد إن ٱلمنفقين لكذبونThey have taken their oaths as a shield and turned [people] away from the way of God.
ٱتخذوا أيمنهم جنة فصدوا عن سبيل ٱللهHow evil indeed is what they used to do!
إنهم سآء ما كانوا يعملونThat is because they believed, then disowned; so a seal was set upon their cores, and they do not understand.
ذلك بأنهم ءامنوا ثم كفروا فطبع على قلوبهم فهم لا يفقهونAnd when you see them, their appearance pleases you,
وإذا رأيتهم تعجبك أجسامهمand if they speak, you listen to their speech; they are like propped-up pieces of wood.
وإن يقولوا تسمع لقولهم كأنهم خشب مسندةThey think every shout is against them.
يحسبون كل صيحة عليهمThey are the enemy.
هم ٱلعدوSo beware of them.
فٱحذرهمMay God combat them!
قتلهم ٱللهHow are they deluded!
أنى يؤفكونAnd when it is said to them: Come, that the messenger of God may ask forgiveness for you, they turn their heads aside, and you see them withdrawing while they are arrogant.
وإذا قيل لهم تعالوا يستغفر لكم رسول ٱلله لووا رءوسهم ورأيتهم يصدون وهم مستكبرونIt is the same for them whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them.
سوآء عليهم أستغفرت لهم أم لم تستغفر لهمGod will never forgive them.
لن يغفر ٱلله لهمIndeed, God does not guide the overstepping people.
إن ٱلله لا يهدي ٱلقوم ٱلفسقينThey are the ones who say: Do not spend on those who are with the messenger of God until they disperse.
هم ٱلذين يقولون لا تنفقوا على من عند رسول ٱلله حتى ينفضواBut to God belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth,
ولله خزآئن ٱلسموت وٱلأرضbut the hypocrites do not understand.
ولكن ٱلمنفقين لا يفقهونThey say: If we return to the Capital, the mightier will surely expel the more abased therefrom.
يقولون لئن رجعنآ إلى ٱلمدينة ليخرجن ٱلأعز منها ٱلأذلBut to God belongs might, and to His messenger, and to the believers,
ولله ٱلعزة ولرسوله وللمؤمنينbut the hypocrites do not know.
ولكن ٱلمنفقين لا يعلمونO you who have believed! Let not your goods or your children distract you from the remembrance of God.
يأيها ٱلذين ءامنوا لا تلهكم أمولكم ولآ أولدكم عن ذكر ٱللهAnd whoever does that — those are the losers.
ومن يفعل ذلك فأولئك هم ٱلخسرونAnd spend from what We have provided you before death comes to one of you, and he says: My Guardian, if only You would delay me for a short term, that I might give charity and be among the righteous.
وأنفقوا من ما رزقنكم من قبل أن يأتي أحدكم ٱلموت فيقول رب لولآ أخرتني إلى أجل قريب فأصدق وأكن من ٱلصلحينBut God will never delay a Self when its term has come.
ولن يؤخر ٱلله نفسا إذا جآء أجلهاAnd God is Informed of what you do.
وٱلله خبير بما تعملون
