Sourate At-Tahrim (66) with hamza shown

In the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Benevolent. O Prophet! Why do you forbid what God has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives?i 1

بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم يأيها ٱلنبي لم تحرم مآ أحل ٱلله لك تبتغي مرضات أزوجك

And God is Forgiving, Benevolent. 1

وٱلله غفور رحيم

God has prescribed for you the release from your oaths, 2

قد فرض ٱلله لكم تحلة أيمنكم

and God is your Protector. 2

وٱلله مولىكم

And He is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise. 2

وهو ٱلعليم ٱلحكيم

And when the Prophet confided a matter in secret to one of his wives, 3

وإذ أسر ٱلنبي إلى بعض أزوجه حديثا

and she disclosed it, and God made it known to him, he made known part of it and passed over another part. 3

فلما نبأت به وأظهره ٱلله عليه عرف بعضه وأعرض عن بعض

Then, when he told her of it, she said: 'Who informed you of this?' He said: 'The All-Knowing, the All-Aware informed me.' 3

فلما نبأها به قالت من أنبأك هذا قال نبأني ٱلعليم ٱلخبير

If you two turn to God in repentance — for your cores have indeed swerved — 4

إن تتوبآ إلى ٱلله فقد صغت قلوبكما

but if you support one another against him, then God is his Protector, and Gabriel, and the righteous among the believers, 4

وإن تظهرا عليه فإن ٱلله هو مولىه وجبريل وصلح ٱلمؤمنين

and the Agents, moreover, are his support.i 4

وٱلملئكة بعد ذلك ظهير

It may be that his Guardian, if he divorces you, will give him in exchange wives better than you: true to God alone, believing, devoted, repentant, obedient, free in their movement, previously married or virgins.i 5

عسى ربه إن طلقكن أن يبدله أزوجا خيرا منكن مسلمت مؤمنت قنتت تئبت عبدت سئحت ثيبت وأبكارا

O you who believe! Guard your Selves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are Agents, harsh and severe, who do not disobey God in what He commands them, and who do what they are commanded.i 6

يأيها ٱلذين ءامنوا قوا أنفسكم وأهليكم نارا وقودها ٱلناس وٱلحجارة عليها ملئكة غلاظ شداد لا يعصون ٱلله مآ أمرهم ويفعلون ما يؤمرون

O you who denied [the truth once given to you]! Do not make excuses today: you are only being repaid for what you used to do.i 7

يأيها ٱلذين كفروا لا تعتذروا ٱليوم إنما تجزون ما كنتم تعملون

O you who believe! Turn to God in sincere repentance. It may be that your Guardian will efface your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow, on the day when God will not disgrace the Prophet nor those who believed with him; their light will run before them and on their right. 8

يأيها ٱلذين ءامنوا توبوا إلى ٱلله توبة نصوحا عسى ربكم أن يكفر عنكم سياتكم ويدخلكم جنت تجري من تحتها ٱلأنهر يوم لا يخزي ٱلله ٱلنبي وٱلذين ءامنوا معه نورهم يسعى بين أيديهم وبأيمنهم

They will say: 'Our Guardian, complete our light for us and forgive us.' 8

يقولون ربنآ أتمم لنا نورنا وٱغفر لنآ

You are capable of all things. 8

إنك على كل شىء قدير

O Prophet! Strive against those who deny and the hypocrites, and be firm with them.i 9

يأيها ٱلنبي جهد ٱلكفار وٱلمنفقين وٱغلظ عليهم

Their refuge is Jahannam, 9

ومأوىهم جهنم

and what a wretched destination! 9

وبئس ٱلمصير

God multiplies examples for those who denied: the wife of Nuh and the wife of Lut.i 10

ضرب ٱلله مثلا للذين كفروا ٱمرأت نوح وٱمرأت لوط

they were under two of Our righteous obedient ones, yet they betrayed them, so those two were of no avail to them against God, 10

كانتا تحت عبدين من عبادنا صلحين فخانتاهما فلم يغنيا عنهما من ٱلله شيا

and it was said: 'Enter, both of you, the Fire with those who enter.' 10

وقيل ٱدخلا ٱلنار مع ٱلدخلين

And God multiplies examples for those who believe: the wife of Fir'awn, when she said: 'My Guardian, build for me, near You, a home in Paradise, and save me from Fir'awn and his doing, and save me from the wrongdoing people.'i 11

وضرب ٱلله مثلا للذين ءامنوا ٱمرأت فرعون إذ قالت رب ٱبن لي عندك بيتا في ٱلجنة ونجني من فرعون وعمله ونجني من ٱلقوم ٱلظلمين

And Maryam, daughter of Imran, who guarded her chastity; We breathed into it of Our Influx. She believed in the words of her Guardian and His scriptures, and was among the devoted.i 12

ومريم ٱبنت عمرن ٱلتي أحصنت فرجها فنفخنا فيه من روحنا وصدقت بكلمت ربها وكتبه وكانت من ٱلقنتين
