Al-A'raf

  • In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Mim. Sad.i 1
  • A Scripture has been revealed to you — let there be no distress in your chest because of it — so that you may warn by it, and [that it be] a reminder for the believers.i 2
  • Follow what has been revealed to you from your Guardian, 3
  • and do not follow, besides Him, other allies. 3
  • How little you take heed! 3
  • How many a city have We destroyed! Our rigor came upon it by night, or while it was taking its midday rest. 4
  • Their only cry, when Our rigor came to them, was to say: "We were indeed unjust." 5
  • We will certainly question those to whom [messengers] were sent, and We will certainly question the envoys, 6
  • and We will relate to them, with full knowledge, 7
  • for We were not absent. 7
  • The weighing, on that day, will be the truth. 8
  • Those whose weights are heavy — those are the ones who succeed. 8
  • And those whose weights are light — those are the ones who will have caused the loss of their Selves, for having been unjust toward Our signs. 9
  • We have indeed established you on the earth, and We have given you therein means of livelihood. 10
  • How little you are grateful! 10
  • We indeed created you, then We gave you form, then We said to the Agents: "Prostrate before Adam"; they prostrated,i 11
  • except the Despairing One [Iblis]: he was not among those who prostrated.i 11
  • He said: "What prevented you from prostrating, when I commanded you?" 12
  • He said: "I am better than him: You created me from fire, and You created him from clay." 12
  • He said: "Then descend from here: it is not for you to be arrogant here; go out, then, you are indeed among the humbled." 13
  • He said: "Grant me a delay, until the day they are resurrected." 14
  • He said: "You are indeed among those granted a delay." 15
  • He said: "Since You have caused me to fall, I will certainly settle in wait for them on Your straight path, then I will certainly come at them, from before them and from behind them, from their right and from their left,i 17
  • and You will not find most of them grateful." 17
  • He said: "Get out of here, disgraced, expelled. 18
  • Whoever among them follows you — I will certainly fill Jahannam with all of you." 18
  • "O Adam! dwell, you and your spouse, in the Garden, and eat from it wherever you wish,i 19
  • but do not approach this tree, lest you be among the unjust." 19
  • But the Diverter whispered suggestions to them, so as to reveal to them what had been hidden from them of their nakedness,i 20
  • and he said: "Your Guardian has forbidden you this tree only to prevent you from becoming Agents, or from being among those who abide eternally."i 20
  • And he swore to them both: "I am indeed, for you two, among the sincere advisors" — thus he brought them down by deception. 22
  • When they had tasted the tree, their nakedness became apparent to them, and they both set about covering themselves with leaves from the Garden. 22
  • And their Guardian called out to them: "Did I not forbid you this tree, and did I not tell you that the Diverter is, for you two, a declared enemy?"i 22
  • They both said: "Our Guardian, we have been unjust to ourselves; if You do not forgive us and have benevolence on us, we will certainly be among the losers." 23
  • He said: "Descend. 24
  • You will be enemies to one another. 24
  • And you will have, on the earth, a dwelling and an enjoyment for a time." 24
  • He said: "There you will live, there you will die, and from there you will be brought forth." 25
  • O children of Adam! We have sent down for you a garment that covers your nakedness, as well as an adornment; and the garment of guardedness —i 26
  • that is better. 26
  • That is one of the signs of God — perhaps they will take heed. 26
  • O children of Adam! let not the Diverter try you as he made your two ancestors go out of the Garden, stripping them of their garment to show them their nakedness.i 27
  • He sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them. 27
  • We have made the diverters allies for those who do not believe.i 27
  • And when they commit an indecency, they say: "We found our ancestors doing this, and God ordered it to us." 28
  • Say: "God does not order indecency. 28
  • Will you say about God what you do not know?" 28
  • Say: "My Guardian has ordered equity. 29
  • Maintain your directions toward Him at every moment of prostration,i 29
  • and invoke Him, devoting your allegiance to Him alone. 29
  • As He originated you, you will return." 29
  • One group, He has guided; 30
  • and [another] group, error has been verified upon them. 30
  • That is because they took the diverters as allies besides God, while thinking themselves rightly guided.i 30
  • O children of Adam! take your adornment at every moment of prostration, and eat and drink,i 31
  • but do not waste: 31
  • He does not love the wasteful. 31
  • Say: "Who has forbidden God's adornment, which He brought forth for His obedient ones, and the good things of provision?" 32
  • Say: "It is for those who have believed in the present life, exclusive on the Day of Appearance."i 32
  • Thus do We detail the signs for a people who know. 32
  • Say: "My Guardian has forbidden only indecencies, apparent or hidden, transgression, transgression without right, that you associate with God that for which He has sent down no authority, and that you say about God what you do not know." 33
  • And to every community a term. 34
  • When their term arrives, they cannot delay it by an hour, 34
  • nor advance it. 34
  • O children of Adam! if messengers from among yourselves come to you, relating My signs to you — whoever guards himself and reforms, no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.i 35
  • But those who denied Our signs and were arrogant about them — those are the companions of the Fire, they will abide therein eternally. 36
  • Who is then more unjust than one who invents a lie against God, or denies His signs? 37
  • Those are the ones who will receive their share of the register,i 37
  • until Our envoys come to take back [their Selves]: "Where are those you used to invoke besides God?" They will say: "They have strayed away from us", 37
  • and they will bear witness against themselves that they were denying-disowning. 37
  • He will say: "Enter among communities that preceded you, of the Occulted and humans, into the Fire."i 38
  • Every time a community enters, it curses its [preceding] sister, 38
  • until, having all joined therein, the last of them will say of the first: "Our Guardian, these are the ones who led us astray; give them, then, a double punishment from the Fire." 38
  • He will say: "To each the double, 38
  • but you do not know." 38
  • And the first of them will say to the last: "You then have no advantage over us; taste, then, the punishment, for what you used to earn." 39
  • Those who denied Our signs and were arrogant about them, the gates of heaven will not open for them, and they will not enter the Garden, until the camel passes through the eye of the needle. 40
  • Thus do We reward the severed. 40
  • They will have, from Jahannam, a bed, 41
  • and, above them, coverings [of fire]. 41
  • Thus do We reward the unjust. 41
  • Those who have believed and done righteous deeds — We do not impose upon any Self except its capacity — 42
  • those are the companions of the Garden, they will abide therein eternally. 42
  • And We will have removed from their chests all rancor; rivers will flow beneath them, 43
  • and they will say: "Praise be to God, who guided us to this; 43
  • we would not have been guided, had God not guided us. 43
  • The messengers of our Guardian did indeed come with the truth." 43
  • And it will be called out to them: "This is the Garden which you have inherited, for what you used to do." 43
  • And the companions of the Garden will call out to the companions of the Fire: "We have found true what our Guardian promised us; have you found true what your Guardian promised you?" 44
  • They will say: "Yes." 44
  • Then a herald will proclaim among them: "The curse of God is upon the unjust, who turn away from the path of God, seeking to make it crooked, and who deny the last life."i 45
  • and between the two, a veil. 46
  • And on the Heights [an identification checkpoint], men who recognize each one by his marks,i 46
  • and they will call out to the companions of the Garden: "Peace be upon you" — 46
  • they themselves have not entered it, though longing for it. 46
  • And when their gazes are turned toward the companions of the Fire, they will say: "Our Guardian, do not place us with the unjust people." 47
  • And the companions of the Heights will call out to men whom they recognize by their marks: "Your crowd has availed you nothing, nor your arrogance." 48
  • "Are these the ones about whom you swore that God would not touch them with any benevolence?" 49
  • "Enter the Garden; no fear upon you, and you will not grieve." 49
  • And the companions of the Fire will call out to the companions of the Garden: "Pour upon us some water, or of what God has provided you as sustenance." 50
  • They will say: "God has forbidden both to those who deny-disown, those who took their Law for amusement and play, and whom the present life deceived. 51
  • Today, then, We forget them, as they forgot the meeting of this day of theirs, and because they used to deny Our signs." 51
  • We indeed brought them a Scripture, which We detailed with full knowledge, a guidance and a benevolence for a people who believe.i 52
  • Do they await anything but its fulfillment? 53
  • On the day its fulfillment comes, those who had forgotten it before will say: "The messengers of our Guardian did indeed come with the truth; do we have intercessors, that they might intercede for us, or could we be sent back, so that we might act otherwise than we used to act?" 53
  • They will have caused the loss of their Selves, and what they used to invent will have forsaken them. 53
  • Your Guardian is God, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then settled upon the Edifice. 54
  • He covers the day with the night, which pursues it relentlessly; the sun, the moon, and the stars are subjected to His command. 54
  • Is it not to Him that creation and the Order belong? 54
  • Blessed is God, Guardian of all beings.i 54
  • Invoke your Guardian, humbly and in secret. 55
  • He does not love those who transgress limits. 55
  • And do not sow corruption on the earth after its setting right, 56
  • and invoke Him with fear and hope. 56
  • The benevolence of God is indeed near to those who do good. 56
  • It is He who sends the winds that disperse, before His benevolence,i 57
  • until, laden with heavy clouds, We drive them toward a dead land: We then send down water from it, and We bring forth by it every kind of fruit. 57
  • Thus will We bring forth the dead — perhaps you will take heed. 57
  • And the good land, its vegetation comes out with the permission of its Guardian, 58
  • while that which is bad brings forth only scantily. 58
  • Thus do We diversify the signs for a people who are grateful. 58
  • We indeed sent Nuh to his people; he said: "O my people! obey God: you have no other deity than Him.i 59
  • I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous day." 59
  • The court of his people said: "We see you indeed in manifest error." 60
  • He said: "O my people! there is no error in me, but I am a messenger from the Guardian of all beings. 61
  • I convey to you the messages of my Guardian, I advise you sincerely, and I know, from God, what you do not know. 62
  • Do you wonder that a reminder from your Guardian should come to you through a man from among yourselves, that he might warn you, that you might guard yourselves, and that, perhaps, benevolence might be shown to you?" 63
  • They denied him; We saved him, and those with him in the ship, 64
  • and We drowned those who had denied Our signs. 64
  • They were indeed a blind people. 64
  • And to the Recidivists [Aad], their brother Hud —i 65
  • he said: "O my people! obey God: you have no other deity than Him. 65
  • Will you not then guard yourselves?" 65
  • The court of his people, those who had denied-disowned, said: "We see you indeed in sheer foolishness, and we think you indeed among the liars." 66
  • He said: "O my people! there is no foolishness in me, but I am a messenger from the Guardian of all beings. 67
  • I convey to you the messages of my Guardian, and I am for you a trustworthy advisor. 68
  • Do you wonder that a reminder from your Guardian should come to you through a man from among yourselves, that he might warn you? 69
  • Remember that He made you successors after the people of Nuh, and gave you an increase of stature in constitution.i 69
  • Remember, then, the blessings of God, perhaps you will succeed." 69
  • They said: "Have you come to us so that we may obey God alone, and abandon what our ancestors used to obey? Bring us then what you threaten us with, if you are among the truthful." 70
  • He said: "A defilement and an anger from your Guardian have already fallen upon you. 71
  • Do you dispute with me concerning names that you and your ancestors have named, for which God has sent down no authority? 71
  • Wait then: I am, with you, among those who wait." 71
  • So We saved him, and those with him, by a benevolence from Us, and We cut off to the last remnant those who had denied Our signs: they were not believers. 72
  • And to the Depleters [Thamud], their brother Salih —i 73
  • he said: "O my people! obey God: you have no other deity than Him. 73
  • A clear proof has indeed come to you from your Guardian: 73
  • this is the she-camel of God, a sign for you. 73
  • So leave her to eat on God's earth, 73
  • and do her no harm, lest a painful punishment seize you." 73
  • And remember that He made you successors after Aad, and settled you on the earth: you take, in its plains, castles, and you carve the mountains into dwellings. 74
  • Remember, then, the blessings of God, 74
  • and do not spread disorder on the earth by spreading corruption in it. 74
  • The court of his people, those who had been arrogant, said to those who had been reduced to weakness, to those among them who had believed: "Do you know that Salih is sent by his Guardian?"i 75
  • They said: "We indeed believe in what he was sent with." 75
  • Those who had been arrogant said: "We, for our part, deny-disown what you believe in." 76
  • They then hamstrung the she-camel, transgressed the order of their Guardian, 77
  • and said: "O Salih! bring us what you threaten us with, if you are among the envoys."i 77
  • Then the great tremor seized them, and they found themselves, in their dwelling, lying, still. 78
  • He turned away from them and said: "O my people! I did indeed convey to you the message of my Guardian, and I advised you, 79
  • but you do not love sincere advisors." 79
  • And Lut, when he said to his people: "Do you commit the indecency that none, among all beings, has committed before you?i 80
  • You indeed approach men with desire, instead of women. 81
  • You are rather indeed a people of the excessive." 81
  • And the only answer of his people was to say: "Expel them from your city; 82
  • they are people who want to be pure." 82
  • So We saved him, and his family, except his wife, who was among those who remained behind. 83
  • And We rained down upon them a rain. 84
  • So look how the end of the severed was. 84
  • And to Madyan, their brother Shu'ayb —i 85
  • he said: "O my people! obey God: you have no other deity than Him. 85
  • A clear proof has indeed come to you from your Guardian. 85
  • So give full measure and full weight, 85
  • and do not wrong people in their possessions, 85
  • and do not sow corruption on the earth after its setting right. 85
  • That is better for you, if you are believers. 85
  • And do not sit in wait on every path, threatening and turning away from the path of God whoever believes in Him, and seeking to make it crooked. 86
  • And remember that you were few, and He multiplied you. 86
  • And look how the end of those who sow corruption was. 86
  • And if a group among you has believed in what I was sent with, and another group has not believed, be patient then until God judges between us: 87
  • He is the best of judges. 87
  • The court of his people, those who had been arrogant, said: "We will certainly expel you from our city, O Shu'ayb, you and those who have believed with you, unless you return to our creed." 88
  • He said: "Even if we were averse to it? 88
  • We would indeed have invented a lie against God, if we returned to your creed after God has saved us from it. 89
  • It is not for us to return to it, unless God, our Guardian, wills it. 89
  • Our Guardian encompasses all things in His knowledge. 89
  • It is upon God that we rely. 89
  • Our Guardian, judge between us and our people, in truth: 89
  • You are the best of those who judge." 89
  • And the court of his people, those who denied-disowned, said: "If you follow Shu'ayb, you will then certainly be losers." 90
  • Then the great tremor seized them, and they found themselves, in their dwelling, lying, still. 91
  • Those who had denied Shu'ayb became as if they had never dwelt there. 92
  • Those who had denied Shu'ayb, they were the losers. 92
  • He turned away from them and said: "O my people! I did indeed convey to you the messages of my Guardian, and I advised you. 93
  • How then should I grieve for a people who deny-disown?" 93
  • We have not sent, into any city, a prophet without seizing its inhabitants with misfortune and hardship, that they might humble themselves. 94
  • Then We replaced evil with good, until they prospered 95
  • and said: "Hardship and happiness already touched our ancestors"; We then seized them by surprise, without their perceiving it. 95
  • And had the inhabitants of the cities believed and guarded themselves, We would indeed have opened upon them blessings from the sky and the earth; 96
  • but they denied, and We then seized them for what they used to earn. 96
  • Are the inhabitants of the cities then secure that Our rigor should come upon them by night, while they sleep? Or are the inhabitants of the cities secure that Our rigor should come upon them in broad daylight, while they play? 98
  • Do they then feel secure from God's scheming? 99
  • None feels secure from God's scheming, except the people of the losers. 99
  • Has it not become clearly apparent to those who inherit the earth after its [past] inhabitants, that, had We willed, We would strike them for their offenses, 100
  • and We seal their cores, so that they do not hear? 100
  • Those are the cities of which We relate to you certain information. 101
  • Their messengers had indeed come to them with clear proofs, but they were not disposed to believe what they had first denied. 101
  • Thus does God seal the cores of those who deny-disown. 101
  • And We found, in most of them, no engagement kept; 102
  • We indeed found most of them to be oversteppers. 102
  • Then We sent, after them, Moussa with Our signs, to Fir'awn and his court, but they were unjust toward them.i 103
  • So look how the end of those who sow corruption was. 103
  • Moussa said: "O Fir'awn! I am a messenger from the Guardian of all beings, in truth,i 105
  • bound to say about God nothing but the truth. 105
  • I have come to you with a clear proof from your Guardian; 105
  • so let the Children of Israel go with me." 105
  • He said: "If you have come with a sign, bring it then, if you are among the truthful." 106
  • He then threw down his staff, and behold, it was a manifest serpent; and he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to those who looked. 108
  • The court of Fir'awn's people said: "This is indeed a knowledgeable illusion-maker, who wants to bring you out of your land."i 110
  • "What then do you advise?" 110
  • They said: "Put him off, him and his brother, and send into the cities gatherers, who will bring you every knowledgeable illusion-maker." 112
  • And the illusion-makers came to Fir'awn; they said: "Will we indeed have a reward, if we are the victors?"i 113
  • He said: "Yes, and you will certainly be among those brought near." 114
  • They said: "O Moussa! either you throw, or we will be the ones who throw."i 115
  • He said: "Throw." 116
  • When they had thrown, they bewitched the eyes of the people by illusion, and filled them with terror, 116
  • and they brought a tremendous illusion. 116
  • And We revealed to Moussa: "Throw your staff";i 117
  • and behold, it swallowed up what they had forged by falsehood. 117
  • The truth then came to pass, and what they were doing proved vain. 118
  • They were defeated, right there, and went away humbled. 119
  • And the illusion-makers threw themselves down, prostrate. 120
  • They said: "We believe in the Guardian of all beings, the Guardian of Moussa and Harun."i 122
  • Fir'awn said: "Have you believed in him before I permitted you? This is indeed a scheme you plotted in the city, so as to drive out its inhabitants; you will soon know.i 123
  • I will certainly cut off your hands and feet, on opposite sides, then I will certainly crucify you all together." 124
  • They said: "It is to our Guardian that we return. 125
  • And you hold nothing against us, except that we believed in the signs of our Guardian, once they came to us. 126
  • Our Guardian, pour patience upon us, and take us back to You as those true to God alone." 126
  • And the court of Fir'awn's people said: "Will you leave Moussa and his people to spread corruption on the earth, and to abandon you and your deities?"i 127
  • He said: "We will kill their sons and violate the modesty of their women; we hold indeed the upper hand over them."i 127
  • Moussa said to his people: "Seek help in God, and be patient;i 128
  • the earth belongs to God; He gives it as inheritance to whom He wills among His obedient ones, 128
  • and the [favorable] outcome is for those who guard themselves." 128
  • They said: "We were mistreated before you came to us, and after you came to us." 129
  • He said: "It may be that your Guardian will destroy your enemy and establish you as successors on the earth, so as to see how you would act." 129
  • And We indeed seized the clan of Fir'awn with years [of famine] and a diminution of fruits, that they might take heed.i 130
  • When happiness comes to them, they say: "This belongs to us"; 131
  • and if misfortune touches them, they attribute it to an ill omen from Moussa and those with him.i 131
  • Is it not that in reality their omen is with God? 131
  • But most of them do not know. 131
  • And they said: "Whatever sign you bring us, to bewitch us with it, we will not believe you." 132
  • We then sent upon them the flood, the locusts, the lice, the frogs, and the blood, detailed signs; but they were arrogant and were a severed people. 133
  • And when the defilement fell upon them, they said: "O Moussa! invoke for us your Guardian, by the covenant He has made with you; if you remove the defilement from us, we will certainly believe you, and we will certainly let the Children of Israel go with you."i 134
  • But when We had removed the defilement from them until a term they were to reach, there they were, breaking their engagement. 135
  • We then took vengeance upon them, and We drowned them in the deep, for having denied Our signs and remained heedless of them. 136
  • And We made the people who had been reduced to weakness inherit the easts and the wests of the land which We had blessed. 137
  • And the beautiful word of your Guardian was fulfilled toward the Children of Israel, for having been patient; 137
  • and We destroyed what Fir'awn and his people were doing, and what they were building.i 137
  • And We made the Children of Israel cross the sea; they came upon a people posted before idols of their own. 138
  • They said: "O Moussa! make for us a deity, as they have deities."i 138
  • He said: "You are indeed an ignorant people. 138
  • What these practice is doomed to ruin, 139
  • and vain is what they were doing." 139
  • He said: "Should I seek for you a deity other than God, while He has favored you above all beings?" 140
  • And remember when We saved you from the clan of Fir'awn, who inflicted upon you the worst of punishments, massacring your sons and violating the modesty of your women —i 141
  • and there was in that, for you, an immense trial from your Guardian. 141
  • We fixed for Moussa an appointment of thirty nights, which We completed with ten: thus the appointed meeting set by his Guardian was fulfilled, in forty nights.i 142
  • And Moussa said to his brother Harun: "Take my place among my people, act rightly, and do not follow the path of those who sow corruption."i 142
  • And when Moussa came to Our appointed meeting, and his Guardian spoke to him, he said: "My Guardian, show Yourself to me, that I may look at You."i 143
  • He said: "You will not see Me, but look at the mountain: if it remains in place, then you will see Me." 143
  • When his Guardian manifested Himself to the mountain, He made it collapse under pressure, and Moussa fell thunderstruck.i 143
  • When he came to, he said: "Glory be to You! I turn back to You, and I am the first of the believers." 143
  • He said: "O Moussa! I have chosen you among mankind for My messages and for My speech; take, then, what I have given you, and be among the grateful."i 144
  • And We wrote for him, on the Tablets, an admonition concerning all things, and a detail of all things. 145
  • Take them, then, with strength, and order your people to take what is best in them. 145
  • I will show you the abode of the oversteppers. 145
  • I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant on the earth without right; even if they saw every sign, they would not believe in it, and if they saw the path of righteousness, they would not take it as a path, while, if they saw the path of error, they would take it as a path. 146
  • That is because they denied Our signs and remained heedless of them. 146
  • And those who denied Our signs and the meeting of the last life, their works have collapsed; are they rewarded except according to what they used to do? 147
  • And the people of Moussa took, after him, from their ornaments, a calf, a body that lowed.i 148
  • Did they not see that it did not speak to them and did not guide them to any path? 148
  • They took it [as a deity], and were unjust. 148
  • And when they were struck with regret, seeing that they had gone astray, they said: "If our Guardian does not have benevolence on us and does not forgive us, we will certainly be among the losers." 149
  • When Moussa returned to his people, angry, grieved, he said: "How evil is what you have done in my place, after me!i 150
  • Did you want to hasten the command of your Guardian?" 150
  • And he threw down the Tablets, and seized his brother by the head, dragging him toward himself. 150
  • He said: "Son of my mother! the people reduced me to weakness, and almost killed me; do not, then, let the enemies gloat over me, and do not place me with the unjust people." 150
  • He said: "My Guardian, forgive me, and my brother, and admit us into Your benevolence; 151
  • You are the most benevolent of the benevolent." 151
  • Those who took the calf [as a deity], an anger from their Guardian will reach them, as well as a humiliation in the present life. 152
  • Thus do We reward the inventors of lies. 152
  • And those who committed evil deeds, then repented after that and believed — your Guardian, after that, is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 153
  • And when Moussa's anger had subsided, he took the Tablets; in their inscription, there was guidance and benevolence for those who dread their Guardian.i 154
  • And Moussa chose, from among his people, seventy men for Our appointed meeting.i 155
  • When the great tremor had seized them, he said: "My Guardian, had You willed, You would have destroyed them before, and me as well. 155
  • Would You destroy us for what the foolish among us have done? 155
  • This is nothing but Your trial, by which You lead astray whom You will, and guide whom You will. 155
  • You are our Protector; forgive us, then, and have benevolence on us; You are the best of those who forgive. 155
  • And inscribe for us, in the present life, a good, as well as in the last life; 156
  • we return to You." 156
  • He said: "My punishment, I strike with it whom I will, 156
  • and My benevolence embraces all things. 156
  • I will inscribe it, then, for those who guard themselves, give the purifying alms, and who believe in Our signs, those who follow the messenger, the prophet without a prior Scripture, whom they find written down with them in the Tawrah and the Injil, who orders them what is recognized and forbids them what is disavowed, makes lawful for them the good things and forbids them the vile things, and removes from them their burden and the shackles that were upon them.i 157
  • Those who believe in him, support him, help him, and follow the light sent down with him — those are the ones who succeed. 157
  • Say: "O mankind! I am the messenger of God to all of you, [God] to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. 158
  • There is no deity but Him. 158
  • He gives life and causes death. 158
  • So believe in God and His Messenger, the prophet without a prior Scripture, who believes in God and His words,i 158
  • and follow him, perhaps you will be rightly guided." 158
  • And among the people of Moussa, there is a community that guides according to the truth and that, by it, acts with equity.i 159
  • And We divided them into twelve tribes, into communities, 160
  • and We revealed to Moussa, when his people asked him for water: "Strike the rock with your staff";i 160
  • and behold, twelve springs gushed forth from it: 160
  • each group of people knew its drinking place. 160
  • And We spread over them the shade of the cloud, and We sent down upon them manna and quails: 160
  • "Eat of the good things We have provided you as sustenance." 160
  • They did not wrong Us, 160
  • but it was to themselves that they did wrong.i 160
  • And remember when it was said to them: "Dwell in this city, eat from it wherever you wish, say: Relieve us [of our faults], and enter by the gate bowing down: We will forgive you your faults. 161
  • We will increase [the reward] of those who do good." 161
  • But those among them who were unjust substituted a saying other than what had been said to them; We then sent down upon them a defilement from the sky, for having been unjust. 162
  • And ask them about the city that was near the sea: when they transgressed by practicing as-sabt [the act of rest/inaction], their fish came to them, breaking the surface; and on the day they did not practice as-sabt, they did not come to them.i 163
  • Thus did We test them, for having overstepped [through this theological transgression]. 163
  • And remember when a community among them said: "Why do you exhort a people whom God is going to destroy, or punish with a severe punishment?" 164
  • They said: "For an excuse before your Guardian, and perhaps they will guard themselves." 164
  • When they forgot what they had been reminded of, We saved those who forbade evil, and We seized the unjust with a harsh punishment, for having overstepped. 165
  • Then, when they persisted arrogantly in what had been forbidden them, We said to them: "Be apes, rejected." 166
  • And remember when your Guardian proclaimed that He would certainly send against them, until the Day of Appearance, one who would inflict upon them the worst of punishments. 167
  • Your Guardian is indeed swift in punishment, 167
  • and He is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 167
  • And We divided them on the earth into communities: 168
  • there are among them the righteous, and there are those who are less so. 168
  • And We tried them with good things and bad things, that they might return. 168
  • Then a posterity succeeded them, who inherited the Scripture, taking the fleeting goods of this lower world, and saying: "It will be forgiven us"; and if a similar good comes to them again, they take it [just the same].i 169
  • Was not the covenant of the Scripture taken from them, that they would say about God nothing but the truth?i 169
  • And they have studied what is in it. 169
  • But the last abode is better for those who guard themselves. 169
  • Will you not then reason? 169
  • And those who hold firmly to the Scripture and maintain the Contact — We do not let the reward of those who set things right be lost.i 170
  • And recall, when We tore the mountain out above them, as though it were a canopy, and they thought it was going to fall upon them: 171
  • "Take with strength what We have given you, and remember what is in it, perhaps you will guard yourselves." 171
  • And remember when your Guardian drew forth from the children of Adam their descendants after them, and made them bear witness concerning themselves: "Am I not your Guardian?" They said: "Yes indeed, we bear witness!"i 172
  • [This,] lest you say, on the Day of Appearance: "We were indeed heedless of this", or that you say: "It was our ancestors who, before, associated, and we were only a descendance after them. 173
  • Would You destroy us for what the workers of falsehood have done?" 173
  • Thus do We detail the signs, and perhaps they will return. 174
  • And recite to them the information concerning him to whom We gave Our signs, and who divested himself of them, so that the Diverter pursued him, and he was among those led astray.i 175
  • Had We willed, We would have raised him by these; but he clung to the earth and followed his emotion. 176
  • His likeness is that of the dog: if you burden it, it pants, and if you leave it, it pants [still]. 176
  • That is the likeness of the people who denied Our signs. 176
  • Relate, then, the account, perhaps they will reflect. 176
  • Evil is the likeness of the people who denied Our signs, and who wronged themselves. 177
  • Whoever God guides, that is the rightly guided; 178
  • and whoever He leads astray, those are the losers. 178
  • And We have created, for Jahannam, many of the Occulted and humans;i 179
  • they have cores with which they do not understand, 179
  • they have eyes with which they do not see, 179
  • and they have ears with which they do not hear. 179
  • Those are the ones who are like cattle — no, they are even more astray. 179
  • Those are the heedless. 179
  • And to God belong the most beautiful attributes; invoke Him, then, by them,i 180
  • and leave those who blaspheme [by distorting] His attributes. 180
  • They will be rewarded according to what they used to do. 180
  • And among those We have created, there is a community that guides according to the truth and that, by it, acts with equity. 181
  • And those who deny Our signs, We will gradually lead them [to ruin], from where they do not know, and I grant them a respite. 183
  • My scheme is indeed solid. 183
  • Do they not then reflect? 184
  • There is no derangement in their companion. 184
  • He is nothing but a manifest warner. 184
  • Have they not looked into the sovereign dominion of the heavens and the earth, and into everything God has created, and [considered] that it may be that their term has already drawn near? 185
  • In what discourse, after this one, will they then believe? 185
  • Whoever God leads astray, no guide for him, 186
  • and He leaves them, in their tyranny, to wander blindly. 186
  • They ask you about the Hour: when will it drop anchor? 187
  • Say: "Knowledge of it is only with my Guardian; 187
  • none but Him will unveil it in its time. 187
  • It weighs heavily in the heavens and on the earth; 187
  • it will come to you only unexpectedly." 187
  • They ask you as if you were well informed about it. 187
  • Say: "Knowledge of it is only with God, 187
  • but most people do not know." 187
  • Say: "I hold, for myself, neither benefit nor harm, except what God wills. 188
  • And if I knew what escapes the senses, I would indeed have amassed abundant good things,i 188
  • and evil would not have touched me. 188
  • I am nothing but a warner, 188
  • and a bearer of good tidings for a people who believe." 188
  • It is He who created you from a single Self, and made from it its spouse, so that he might find rest with it. 189
  • And when he had covered her, she carried a light burden, with which she could move about; 189
  • and when she became heavy with it, they both invoked God, their Guardian: "If You give us a righteous [child], we will certainly be among the grateful." 189
  • But when He had given them a righteous [child], they attributed to Him associates in what He had given them. 190
  • But God is far above what they associate with Him. 190
  • Do they associate with Him what creates nothing, and is [itself] created, 191
  • and can neither help them, nor help itself? 192
  • And if you call them to guidance, they do not follow you. 193
  • It is the same to you, whether you call them, or remain silent. 193
  • Those you invoke besides God are obedient ones like yourselves; 194
  • invoke them, then, and let them answer you, if you are truthful. 194
  • Do they have feet with which they walk? 195
  • Or do they have hands with which they seize? 195
  • Or do they have eyes with which they see? 195
  • Or do they have ears with which they hear? 195
  • Say: "Invoke your associates, then scheme against me, and grant me no respite. 195
  • My protector is God, who sent down the Scripture,i 196
  • and it is He who protects the righteous. 196
  • And those you invoke besides Him can neither help you, nor help themselves." 197
  • And if you call them to guidance, they do not hear; 198
  • and you see them looking at you, without seeing. 198
  • Take what is easy, 199
  • order what is recognized, 199
  • and turn away from the ignorant. 199
  • And if an incitement from the Diverter incites you [to evil], seek refuge in God.i 200
  • He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. 200
  • Those who guard themselves, when a procession [of suggestions] from the Diverter touches them, take heed, and there they are, clear-sighted;i 201
  • while their brothers [the deniers] draw them ever further into error, 202
  • then they do not stop. 202
  • And when you do not bring them a sign, they say: "Why did you not invent it yourself?" 203
  • Say: "I only follow what is revealed to me from my Guardian; 203
  • these are insights from your Guardian, a guidance and a benevolence for a people who believe." 203
  • And when this Recitation is recited, listen to it and keep silent, perhaps benevolence will be shown to you. 204
  • And remember your Guardian, within yourself, humbly and with fear, without raising your voice in speech, in the morning and in the evening, and do not be among the heedless. 205
  • Those who are with your Guardian are not arrogant about obeying Him, they glorify Him, and it is before Him that they prostrate. 206
