Sourate Al-Muddaththir (74) with hamza shown

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. O you who are covered in a cloak! Arise and warn,i 2

بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم يأيها ٱلمدثر قم فأنذر

and your Guardian, magnify, 3

وربك فكبر

and your garments, purify, 4

وثيابك فطهر

and impurity, avoid, 5

وٱلرجز فٱهجر

and do not confer favor seeking more in return, 6

ولا تمنن تستكثر

and for your Guardian, be patient. 7

ولربك فٱصبر

Then, when the trumpet is sounded, that Day will be a difficult day, not easy for the deniers. 10

فإذا نقر في ٱلناقور فذلك يومئذ يوم عسير على ٱلكفرين غير يسير

Leave Me with the one I created alone, and gave him extensive wealth, and children present with him, and spread everything before him, easing his life — then he desires that I should add more. No! 16

ذرني ومن خلقت وحيدا وجعلت له مالا ممدودا وبنين شهودا ومهدت له تمهيدا ثم يطمع أن أزيد كلآ

Indeed, he has been, toward Our signs, obstinate. 16

إنه كان لءايتنا عنيدا

I will cover him with a mounting torment. 17

سأرهقه صعودا

Indeed, he thought and calculated. So may he be destroyed, how he calculated! Again, may he be destroyed, how he calculated! Then he considered; then he frowned and scowled; then he turned back and was arrogant, and said, "This is nothing but illusion passed down; this is nothing but the word of a human being."i 25

إنه فكر وقدر فقتل كيف قدر ثم قتل كيف قدر ثم نظر ثم عبس وبسر ثم أدبر وٱستكبر فقال إن هذآ إلا سحر يؤثر إن هذآ إلا قول ٱلبشر

I will drive him into Saqar. 26

سأصليه سقر

And what can make you know what Saqar is? 27

ومآ أدرىك ما سقر

It leaves nothing and spares nothing, 28

لا تبقي ولا تذر

scorching the flesh of humans. 29

لواحة للبشر

Over it are nineteen. 30

عليها تسعة عشر

And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except Agents,i 31

وما جعلنآ أصحب ٱلنار إلا ملئكة

and We have not made their number except as a trial for those who reject — that those given the Writ may be certain, and those who believe may increase in faith, and those given the Writ and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose cores is a sickness and the deniers may say, "What did God intend by this as an example?"i 31

وما جعلنا عدتهم إلا فتنة للذين كفروا ليستيقن ٱلذين أوتوا ٱلكتب ويزداد ٱلذين ءامنوا إيمنا ولا يرتاب ٱلذين أوتوا ٱلكتب وٱلمؤمنون وليقول ٱلذين في قلوبهم مرض وٱلكفرون ماذآ أراد ٱلله بهذا مثلا

Thus does God leave astray whom He wills and guide whom He wills. 31

كذلك يضل ٱلله من يشآء ويهدي من يشآء

And none knows the soldiers of your Guardian except Him. 31

وما يعلم جنود ربك إلا هو

And it is not but a reminder to humanity. 31

وما هي إلا ذكرى للبشر

No indeed! By the moon, and the night as it departs, and the dawn as it shines forth — indeed, it is one of the greatest signs, a warning to humanity, to whoever among you wills to advance or to remain behind. 37

كلا وٱلقمر وٱليل إذ أدبر وٱلصبح إذآ أسفر إنها لإحدى ٱلكبر نذيرا للبشر لمن شآء منكم أن يتقدم أو يتأخر

Every Self is a pledge for what it has earned, except the companions of the right, 39

كل نفس بما كسبت رهينة إلآ أصحب ٱليمين

in gardens, they will ask one another about the severed: 42

في جنت يتسآءلون عن ٱلمجرمين ما سلككم في سقر

They will say, "We were not of those who maintained the Contact, nor did we used to feed the destitute, and we used to indulge with those who indulged, and we used to deny the Day of Recompense, until certainty came to us."i 47

قالوا لم نك من ٱلمصلين ولم نك نطعم ٱلمسكين وكنا نخوض مع ٱلخآئضين وكنا نكذب بيوم ٱلدين حتى أتىنا ٱليقين

So there will not benefit them the intercession of any intercessors. 48

فما تنفعهم شفعة ٱلشفعين

So what is with them that they turn away from the reminder, as if they were terrified donkeys, fleeing from a lion? 51

فما لهم عن ٱلتذكرة معرضين كأنهم حمر مستنفرة فرت من قسورة

Rather, every one of them desires that he would be given scrolls unrolled. 52

بل يريد كل ٱمرئ منهم أن يؤتى صحفا منشرة

No! But they do not fear the Hereafter. 53

كلا بل لا يخافون ٱلءاخرة

No indeed! Truly, this is a reminder; 54

كلآ إنه تذكرة

so whoever wills may remember it. 55

فمن شآء ذكره

And they will not remember except that God wills. 56

وما يذكرون إلآ أن يشآء ٱلله

He is worthy that one guard oneself before Him, and He is worthy to forgive.i 56

هو أهل ٱلتقوى وأهل ٱلمغفرة
