One Single Law
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Ḥa. Mim. ʿAyn. Sin. Qaf.
بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم حم عسقThus God, the All-Powerful, the Wise, reveals to you — as He did to those before you.
كذلك يوحي إليك وإلى ٱلذين من قبلك ٱلله ٱلعزيز ٱلحكيمTo Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth,
له ما في ٱلسموت وما في ٱلأرضand He is the Most High, the Immense.
وهو ٱلعلي ٱلعظيمThe heavens are about to be rent asunder from above them,
تكاد ٱلسموت يتفطرن من فوقهنwhile the Agents glorify [God] in praise of their Guardian and ask forgiveness for whoever is on the earth.
وٱلملئكة يسبحون بحمد ربهم ويستغفرون لمن في ٱلأرضIs it not true that God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent?
ألآ إن ٱلله هو ٱلغفور ٱلرحيمAs for those who take allies besides Him, God watches over them;
وٱلذين ٱتخذوا من دونه أوليآء ٱلله حفيظ عليهمand you are not, yourself, their trustee.
ومآ أنت عليهم بوكيلThus have We revealed to you a flawless recitation, that you may warn the metropolis and those around it, and warn of the Day of Gathering, of which there is no doubt:
وكذلك أوحينآ إليك قرءانا عربيا لتنذر أم ٱلقرى ومن حولها وتنذر يوم ٱلجمع لا ريب فيهa group in the Garden,
فريق في ٱلجنةand a group in the Inferno.
وفريق في ٱلسعيرHad God willed, He would have made them a single community,
ولو شآء ٱلله لجعلهم أمة وحدةbut He admits whom He wills into His benevolence;
ولكن يدخل من يشآء في رحمتهand the wrongdoers have neither protector nor helper.
وٱلظلمون ما لهم من ولي ولا نصيرHave they, then, taken allies besides Him?
أم ٱتخذوا من دونه أوليآءYet it is God who is the Protector,
فٱلله هو ٱلوليand it is He who gives life to the dead;
وهو يحي ٱلموتىand He is capable of all things.
وهو على كل شىء قديرAnd whatever you differ about, its judgment rests with God.
وما ٱختلفتم فيه من شىء فحكمه إلى ٱللهSuch is God, my Guardian;
ذلكم ٱلله ربيupon Him I rely,
عليه توكلتand to Him I return.
وإليه أنيبOriginator of the heavens and the earth, He gave you mates from among yourselves, and mates among the cattle; by this means He multiplies you.
فاطر ٱلسموت وٱلأرض جعل لكم من أنفسكم أزوجا ومن ٱلأنعم أزوجا يذرؤكم فيهNothing resembles Him,
ليس كمثله شىءand He is the All-Hearing, the One who sees perfectly.
وهو ٱلسميع ٱلبصيرTo Him belong the charges of the heavens and the earth;
له مقاليد ٱلسموت وٱلأرضHe extends provision to whom He wills, or measures it out sparingly.
يبسط ٱلرزق لمن يشآء ويقدرHe is indeed All-Knowing of all things.
إنه بكل شىء عليمHe has ordained for you, in the Law, what He enjoined upon Nuh, what We have revealed to you, and what We enjoined upon Ibrahim, Moussa, and Issa: "Uphold the Law, and do not become divided within it."
شرع لكم من ٱلدين ما وصى به نوحا وٱلذي أوحينآ إليك وما وصينا به إبرهيم وموسى وعيسى أن أقيموا ٱلدين ولا تتفرقوا فيهWhat you call them to weighs heavily upon the associators.
كبر على ٱلمشركين ما تدعوهم إليهGod draws to Himself whom He wills, and guides to Himself whoever turns back to Him.
ٱلله يجتبي إليه من يشآء ويهدي إليه من ينيبYet they became divided only after knowledge had come to them,
وما تفرقوا إلا من بعد ما جآءهم ٱلعلمout of mutual aggression among themselves.
بغيا بينهمAnd had it not been for a word that preceded from your Guardian until an appointed term, it would have been settled between them.
ولولا كلمة سبقت من ربك إلى أجل مسمى لقضي بينهمAnd those who inherited the Scripture after them are in grave, unsettling doubt about it.
وإن ٱلذين أورثوا ٱلكتب من بعدهم لفي شك منه مريبFor this, then, call and stand straight as you have been commanded, and do not follow their emotions.
فلذلك فٱدع وٱستقم كمآ أمرت ولا تتبع أهوآءهمAnd say: "I believe in whatever Scripture God has sent down, and I have been commanded to be just between you.
وقل ءامنت بمآ أنزل ٱلله من كتب وأمرت لأعدل بينكمGod is our Guardian and your Guardian;
ٱلله ربنا وربكمto us our deeds, and to you your deeds;
لنآ أعملنا ولكم أعملكمthere is no argument between us and you;
لا حجة بيننا وبينكمGod will bring us together,
ٱلله يجمع بينناand to Him is the destination."
وإليه ٱلمصيرAnd those who dispute about God after He has been answered, their argument is void before their Guardian, and upon them is wrath,
وٱلذين يحآجون في ٱلله من بعد ما ٱستجيب له حجتهم داحضة عند ربهم وعليهم غضبand for them a severe punishment.
ولهم عذاب شديدIt is God who has sent down the Scripture bearing truth, and the balance.
ٱلله ٱلذي أنزل ٱلكتب بٱلحق وٱلميزانAnd what would make you know?
وما يدريكPerhaps the Hour is near.
لعل ٱلساعة قريبThose who do not believe in it seek to hasten it,
يستعجل بها ٱلذين لا يؤمنون بهاwhile those who have believed are filled with apprehension of it and know that it is the truth.
وٱلذين ءامنوا مشفقون منها ويعلمون أنها ٱلحقIs it not true that those who wrangle about the Hour are in far-reaching error?
ألآ إن ٱلذين يمارون في ٱلساعة لفي ضلل بعيدGod is Subtle toward His obedient ones;
ٱلله لطيف بعبادهHe provides for whom He wills,
يرزق من يشآءand He is the Strong, the All-Powerful.
وهو ٱلقوي ٱلعزيزWhoever desires the harvest of the last life, We increase his harvest for him;
من كان يريد حرث ٱلءاخرة نزد له في حرثهand whoever desires the harvest of the present life, We give him a portion of it,
ومن كان يريد حرث ٱلدنيا نؤته منهاbut he will have no share in the last life.
وما له في ٱلءاخرة من نصيبDo they, then, have associates who have ordained for them, in the Law, what God has not authorized?
أم لهم شركؤا شرعوا لهم من ٱلدين ما لم يأذن به ٱللهAnd were it not for the word of the Separation, it would have been decided between them;
ولولا كلمة ٱلفصل لقضي بينهمand the wrongdoers will have a painful punishment.
وإن ٱلظلمين لهم عذاب أليمYou will see the wrongdoers apprehensive over what they have earned, while it is about to befall them;
ترى ٱلظلمين مشفقين مما كسبوا وهو واقع بهمwhile those who have believed and done righteous deeds will be in the flowering meadows of the Gardens,
وٱلذين ءامنوا وعملوا ٱلصلحت في روضات ٱلجناتthey will have, with their Guardian, whatever they wish:
لهم ما يشآءون عند ربهمthat is the great favor.
ذلك هو ٱلفضل ٱلكبيرThat is what God gives as glad tidings to His obedient ones who have believed and done righteous deeds.
ذلك ٱلذي يبشر ٱلله عباده ٱلذين ءامنوا وعملوا ٱلصلحتSay: "I ask of you no reward for this, other than affection for one's close kin."
قل لآ أسلكم عليه أجرا إلا ٱلمودة في ٱلقربىAnd whoever earns a good deed, We increase its beauty for him;
ومن يقترف حسنة نزد له فيها حسناGod is indeed Most-Forgiving, Grateful.
إن ٱلله غفور شكورWill they say that he has forged a lie against God?
أم يقولون ٱفترى على ٱلله كذباYet if God willed, He would seal your core;
فإن يشإ ٱلله يختم على قلبكbut God blots out falsehood and establishes truth by His words.
ويمح ٱلله ٱلبطل ويحق ٱلحق بكلمتهHe is indeed All-Knowing of what the chests contain.
إنه عليم بذات ٱلصدورIt is He who accepts repentance from His obedient ones, effaces evil deeds, and knows what they do.
وهو ٱلذي يقبل ٱلتوبة عن عباده ويعفوا عن ٱلسيات ويعلم ما تفعلونHe answers those who have believed and done righteous deeds, and increases them out of His favor;
ويستجيب ٱلذين ءامنوا وعملوا ٱلصلحت ويزيدهم من فضلهwhile those who disown will have a severe punishment.
وٱلكفرون لهم عذاب شديدAnd were God to extend provision abundantly to His obedient ones, they would commit aggression on the earth;
ولو بسط ٱلله ٱلرزق لعباده لبغوا في ٱلأرضbut He sends down in due measure what He wills.
ولكن ينزل بقدر ما يشآءHe is indeed, toward His obedient ones, Informed, the One who sees perfectly.
إنه بعباده خبير بصيرIt is He who sends down the rain after they have lost heart, and who spreads out His benevolence;
وهو ٱلذي ينزل ٱلغيث من بعد ما قنطوا وينشر رحمتهand He is the Protector, the Praiseworthy.
وهو ٱلولي ٱلحميدAnd among His signs: the creation of the heavens and the earth, and whatever living creatures He has scattered throughout them;
ومن ءايته خلق ٱلسموت وٱلأرض وما بث فيهما من دآبةand He is able to gather them together, whenever He wills.
وهو على جمعهم إذا يشآء قديرAnd whatever affliction befalls you is because of what your own hands have earned — and He effaces much.
ومآ أصبكم من مصيبة فبما كسبت أيديكم ويعفوا عن كثيرYou cannot render [Him] powerless on the earth,
ومآ أنتم بمعجزين في ٱلأرضand you have, besides God, neither protector nor helper.
وما لكم من دون ٱلله من ولي ولا نصيرAnd among His signs: the [ships] that run upon the sea like mountains.
ومن ءايته ٱلجوار في ٱلبحر كٱلأعلمIf He wills, He stills the wind, and they remain motionless upon its surface — surely in that are signs for every very patient, very grateful one — or He causes them to perish because of what they have earned, while pardoning much.
إن يشأ يسكن ٱلريح فيظللن رواكد على ظهره إن في ذلك لءايت لكل صبار شكور أو يوبقهن بما كسبوا ويعف عن كثير— so that those who argue about Our signs may know that they have no escape.
ويعلم ٱلذين يجدلون في ءايتنا ما لهم من محيصWhatever you have been given is only the enjoyment of the present life;
فمآ أوتيتم من شىء فمتع ٱلحيوة ٱلدنياbut what is with God is better and more lasting, for those who believe and rely upon their Guardian;
وما عند ٱلله خير وأبقى للذين ءامنوا وعلى ربهم يتوكلونfor those who avoid grave transgressions and indecencies, and who, when angered, forgive;
وٱلذين يجتنبون كبئر ٱلإثم وٱلفوحش وإذا ما غضبوا هم يغفرونfor those who answer their Guardian, maintain the Contact, conduct their affairs by mutual consultation, and spend from what We have provided them;
وٱلذين ٱستجابوا لربهم وأقاموا ٱلصلوة وأمرهم شورى بينهم ومما رزقنهم ينفقونfor those who, when aggression befalls them, defend themselves.
وٱلذين إذآ أصابهم ٱلبغي هم ينتصرونThe recompense of an evil is an evil equal to it;
وجزؤا سيئة سيئة مثلهاbut whoever effaces and reconciles, his reward is upon God —
فمن عفا وأصلح فأجره على ٱللهHe does not love the wrongdoers.
إنه لا يحب ٱلظلمينAnd whoever defends himself after having suffered injustice, against such there is no course [of blame];
ولمن ٱنتصر بعد ظلمه فأولئك ما عليهم من سبيلblame lies only upon those who wrong people and commit aggression on the earth without right.
إنما ٱلسبيل على ٱلذين يظلمون ٱلناس ويبغون في ٱلأرض بغير ٱلحقThose are the ones who will have a painful punishment.
أولئك لهم عذاب أليمAnd whoever endures patiently and forgives, that is surely among matters of firm resolve.
ولمن صبر وغفر إن ذلك لمن عزم ٱلأمورAnd whoever God leaves astray has no protector after that.
ومن يضلل ٱلله فما له من ولي من بعدهYou will see the wrongdoers, when they see the punishment, saying: "Is there any way back?"
وترى ٱلظلمين لما رأوا ٱلعذاب يقولون هل إلى مرد من سبيلYou will see them exposed before it, humble,
وترىهم يعرضون عليها خشعينlooking with a furtive glance, out of humiliation.
من ٱلذل ينظرون من طرف خفيAnd those who have believed will say: "The true losers are those who have lost themselves and their families on the Day of Appearance."
وقال ٱلذين ءامنوا إن ٱلخسرين ٱلذين خسروا أنفسهم وأهليهم يوم ٱلقيمةIs it not true that the wrongdoers are in lasting punishment?
ألآ إن ٱلظلمين في عذاب مقيمThey will have no allies to help them, besides God.
وما كان لهم من أوليآء ينصرونهم من دون ٱللهAnd whoever God leaves astray has no way at all.
ومن يضلل ٱلله فما له من سبيلAnswer your Guardian before there comes a Day that God will not turn back;
ٱستجيبوا لربكم من قبل أن يأتي يوم لا مرد له من ٱللهyou will have no refuge on that Day,
ما لكم من ملجإ يومئذand you will have no way to deny [it].
وما لكم من نكيرIf they turn away, [know that] We have not sent you as a guardian over them;
فإن أعرضوا فمآ أرسلنك عليهم حفيظاupon you rests only the transmission.
إن عليك إلا ٱلبلغAnd when We let the human being taste a benevolence from Us, he rejoices in it;
وإنآ إذآ أذقنا ٱلإنسن منا رحمة فرح بهاbut if an evil befalls them because of what their hands have prepared, then the human being is greatly given to disowning.
وإن تصبهم سيئة بما قدمت أيديهم فإن ٱلإنسن كفورTo God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth;
لله ملك ٱلسموت وٱلأرضHe creates what He wills;
يخلق ما يشآءHe grants, to whom He wills, daughters, and He grants, to whom He wills, sons, or He pairs them, males and females, and He renders barren whom He wills.
يهب لمن يشآء إنثا ويهب لمن يشآء ٱلذكور أو يزوجهم ذكرانا وإنثا ويجعل من يشآء عقيماHe is indeed All-Knowing, Able.
إنه عليم قديرIt is not for any human that God should speak to him, except by revelation, or from behind a veil, or by sending a messenger who reveals, by His leave, what He wills;
وما كان لبشر أن يكلمه ٱلله إلا وحيا أو من ورآئ حجاب أو يرسل رسولا فيوحي بإذنه ما يشآءHe is indeed the Most High, the Wise.
إنه علي حكيمThus have We revealed to you an Influx from Our own command;
وكذلك أوحينآ إليك روحا من أمرناyou did not know what the Scripture was, nor faith, but We made it a light by which We guide whom We will among Our obedient ones;
ما كنت تدري ما ٱلكتب ولا ٱلإيمن ولكن جعلنه نورا نهدي به من نشآء من عبادناand you surely guide to a straight path — the path of God, to whom belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth.
وإنك لتهدي إلى صرط مستقيم صرط ٱلله ٱلذي له ما في ٱلسموت وما في ٱلأرضIs it not true that to God all affairs return?
ألآ إلى ٱلله تصير ٱلأمور
