مريم
Maryam
A Remembrance of Benevolence
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Kaf. Ha. Ya. ʿAyn. Ṣad.
A remembrance of your Guardian's benevolence toward His obedient one Zakariya, when he called upon his Guardian with a hidden call,
he said: "My Guardian, the bone has indeed grown frail within me, the head has blazed white, and never, in invoking You, my Guardian, have I been wretched.
And I have indeed feared my kin after me, and my wife is barren. So bestow on me, from Yourself, a protector who will inherit from me and inherit from the clan of Yaacoub,
and make him, my Guardian, well-pleasing."
"O Zakariya, We indeed give you glad tidings of a boy: his attribute is Yahya, for whom We have made, before him, no one who shares this attribute."
He said: "My Guardian, how shall I have a boy, when my wife is barren and I have reached, in old age, utter decrepitude?"
He said: "So it will be. Your Guardian has said: That is easy for Me, and I created you before, when you were nothing."
He said: "My Guardian, appoint for me a sign."
He said: "Your sign is that you shall not speak to men for three complete nights."
He came out to his people, from the oratory, and signaled to them: "Glorify at morning and evening."
"O Yahya, take the Scripture with strength."
And We gave him judgment, while he was a young child,
and a tenderness from Us, and a purity;
and he guarded himself.
And virtuous toward his parents, he was neither tyrannical nor disobedient.
And peace be upon him the day he was born, the day he dies, and the day he is raised alive.
And mention, in the Scripture, Maryam, when she secluded herself from her people in a place toward the east and took, apart from them, a veil.
So We sent to her Our Influx, who took before her the form of a well-formed human.
She said: "I indeed take refuge from you with the All-Benevolent! If you guard yourself…"
He said: "I am only the messenger of your Guardian, that He may bestow on you a pure boy."
She said: "How shall I have a boy, when no human has touched me and I have not been unchaste?"
He said: "So it will be. Your Guardian has said: That is easy for Me.
And We shall make him a sign for mankind and a benevolence from Us.
It is a matter already decreed."
She carried him, then secluded herself with him in a far-off place.
The pangs of childbirth drove her to the trunk of the palm tree. She said: "Would that I had died before this, and been a thing forgotten, utterly forgotten!"
He called to her from below her: "Do not grieve! Your Guardian has set beneath you a couch.
And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree: it will let fresh, ripe dates tumble upon you.
So eat, drink, and let your eye find rest.
If you see anyone among the humans, say: 'I have vowed to the All-Benevolent an abstention; so I shall not speak today to any human.'"
Then she came with him to her people, carrying him.
They said: "O Maryam, you have surely come to a monstrous thing!
O sister of Harun, your father was not a man of evil, nor your mother unchaste."
So she pointed to him.
They said: "How shall we speak to one who is a young child in the cradle?"
The child said: "I am indeed the obedient one of God. He has given me the Scripture and made me an informant; He has made me blessed wherever I may be, and enjoined upon me the Contact and pure liberality as long as I live, and virtue toward my mother.

And peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I am raised alive."
Such is Issa, son of Maryam —
the saying of truth, about which they contend.
It is not for God to take a child.
Glory be to Him!
When He decrees a matter, He only says to it: "Be",
and it is.
And God is indeed my Guardian and your Guardian: so obey Him.
This is a straight path.
But the parties diverged among themselves.
So woe to those who disown, at the witnessing of an immense Day!
How well they will hear, and how clearly they will see, the Day they come to Us!
Yet the wrongdoers, today, are in manifest error.
And warn them of the Day of Desolation, when the matter is decided, while they are heedless and do not believe.
It is We who will inherit the earth and all who are upon it,
and to Us they will be returned.
And mention, in the Scripture, Ibrahim: he was a veracious man, an informant, when he said to his father: "O my father, why do you obey what neither hears nor sees clearly and avails you nothing?
O my father, there has indeed come to me of knowledge what has not come to you; so follow me, I will guide you along an even path.
O my father, do not obey the Diverter:
the Diverter is indeed disobedient toward the All-Benevolent.
O my father, I fear that a punishment from the All-Benevolent will touch you, and you become an ally of the Diverter."
His father said: "Are you falling away from my deities, O Ibrahim?
If you do not desist, I will surely banish you! Keep away from me for a long time."
Ibrahim said: "Peace be upon you. I will ask my Guardian's forgiveness for you: He has ever been attentive to me. I draw apart from you and from what you invoke besides God, and I invoke my Guardian; it may be that, in invoking my Guardian, I shall not be wretched."
When he had drawn apart from them and from what they obeyed besides God, We bestowed on him Ishaq and Yaacoub,
and each We made an informant.
And We bestowed on them of Our benevolence, and gave them a lofty tongue of veracity.
And mention, in the Scripture, Moussa: he was devoted exclusively to God, and he was a messenger, an informant.
And We called him from the right side of the Mount, and drew him near in private converse.
And We bestowed on him, out of Our benevolence, his brother Harun, an informant.
And mention, in the Scripture, Isma'il: he was true to his promise, and he was a messenger, an informant. He would enjoin upon his people the Contact and pure liberality,
and he was, with his Guardian, well-pleasing.
And mention, in the Scripture, Idris: he was a veracious man, an informant.
And We elevated him to a lofty station.
Those are the ones God has favored among the informants: of the descendants of Adam, of those We carried with Nuh, of the descendants of Ibrahim and of Israel, and of those We guided and elected.
When the signs of the All-Benevolent were recited to them, they fell down prostrate, weeping.
Then there succeeded them a generation who let the Contact dissipate and followed desires: so they will meet with errancy — except one who repents, believes, and does a sound deed; those will be admitted into the Garden and be wronged in nothing: the Gardens of permanence which the All-Benevolent has promised His obedient ones, even though they escape their senses.
His promise is indeed to be fulfilled.
They will hear in it no idle talk,
only: "Peace!"
And they will have their provision there, morning and evening.
Such is the Garden that We shall give as inheritance, among Our obedient ones, to whoever guarded himself.
"We do not descend except by the command of your Guardian.
To Him belongs what is before us, what is behind us, and what is between the two.
And your Guardian is never forgetful."
The Guardian of the heavens and the earth and what is between them: so obey Him, and be constant in obeying Him.
Do you know anyone who shares His attribute?
And the human being says: "When I am dead, shall I really be brought forth alive?"
Does the human being not remember that We created him before, when he was nothing?
By your Guardian, We will surely gather them, along with the Diverters; then We will surely bring them around Jahannam, on their knees.
Then We will surely pluck out, from every faction, those most insolent toward the All-Benevolent.
Then it is We who know best who most deserves to burn in it.
And there is none of you but will arrive at it: that is, for your Guardian, an irrevocable sentence.
Then We will save those who guarded themselves, and forsake the wrongdoers in it, on their knees.
And when Our clear signs are recited to them, those who disown say to those who believe: "Which of the two fractions has the better standing and the more beautiful circle?"
How many a generation before them We have annihilated, more beautiful in possessions and in looks!
Say: "Whoever is in error, let the All-Benevolent extend for him a long respite,
until, seeing what they are promised — either the punishment or the Hour — they know who has the worst place and who is weakest in army."
And God increases in guidance those who let themselves be guided.
And the enduring, sound deeds are, with your Guardian, better in requital and better in what they yield.
Have you seen the one who disowned Our signs and said: "I will surely be given goods and children"? Has he pierced what escapes the senses, or taken a pact with the All-Benevolent? By no means!
We will record what he says and extend for him the punishment, at length.
And We will inherit what he says, and he will come to Us, alone.
And they have taken, besides God, deities, that they might be a might for them. By no means!
They will disown their obedience and stand against them as adversaries.
Have you not seen that We have loosed the Diverters upon those who disown, inflaming them relentlessly?
So do not be hasty against them:
We only number for them, one by one.
The Day We gather those who guarded themselves to the All-Benevolent, as a delegation, and drive the severed to Jahannam, to arrive there.
They will possess no intercession, except one who has taken a pact with the All-Benevolent.
And they have said: "The All-Benevolent has taken a child."
You have surely come to an enormity! The heavens are close to being rent asunder by it, the earth to splitting open, and the mountains to falling in rubble — that they have ascribed a child to the All-Benevolent.
It does not befit the All-Benevolent to take a child.
There is none in the heavens and the earth but comes to the All-Benevolent as an obedient one.
He has surely enumerated them and numbered them, one by one.
And each of them will come to Him, on the Day of Appearance, alone.
To those who have believed and done sound deeds, the All-Benevolent will indeed grant affection.
We have made it easy on your tongue only so that you may give glad tidings by it to those who guard themselves and warn by it a fierce people.
How many a generation before them We have annihilated! Do you perceive a single one of them, or hear from them the faintest murmur?
