A Scripture whose signs have been made unassailable, then detailed, from a Wise, Intimately Acquainted One: "Obey none but God; I am for you, from Him, a warner and a bearer of good tidings; ask forgiveness of your Guardian, then turn back to Him: He will let you enjoy a fine enjoyment until an appointed term, and grant every possessor of favor his favor.
But if you turn your backs, I indeed fear for you the punishment of a great day."
To God is your return,
and He is capable of all things.
Is it not so: they indeed fold their chests to hide from Him.
Is it not that, when they cover themselves with their clothes, He knows what they keep secret and what they disclose?
He is All-Knowing of what the chests contain.
There is no living being on earth whose provision does not fall to God; He knows its haven and its repository:
everything is in an explicit register.

And it is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days, while His Edifice was founded upon the water, so as to test you: which of you acts best.
And if you say: "You will be raised after death," those who disown will surely say: "This is nothing but a manifest illusion."
And if We adjourn for them the punishment until a numbered term, they will surely say: "What holds it in suspense?"
Is it not that, the day it comes to them, it will not be turned away from them,
and what they used to mock will envelop them.
And if We let the human being taste a benevolence from Us, then pull it away from him, he surely becomes hopeless, a great disowner.
And if We let him taste a blessing after hardship has touched him, he will surely say: "The bad deeds have departed from me":
he surely becomes joyful, boastful.

Except those who were patient and did sound deeds: those will have forgiveness and a great reward.

Perhaps you will leave part of what is revealed to you, and your chest will tighten because of it, since they say: "Why has a treasure not been sent down upon him, or why does an Agent not come with him!"
You are, yourself, only a warner;

Or will they say: "He has invented it"?
Say: "Then bring ten invented surahs like it, and call upon whomever you can, besides God, if you are veracious."
If they do not answer you, then know that it has been sent down only with God's knowledge, and that there is no deity but Him.

Will you then be true to God alone?

Whoever wants the present life and its adornment, We faithfully repay him for his works therein, and he will not be shortchanged in it:

it is indeed the truth from your Guardian, but most men do not believe.

Those are the ones who will be presented before their Guardian, and the witnesses will say: "These are the ones who lied against their Guardian!"

the punishment will be doubled for them.

They could neither hear, nor see clearly.

Those are the ones who have caused the loss of their Selves, and what they invented has strayed away from them.
Inevitably, in the last life, they are the greatest losers.

Those who have believed, done sound deeds, and been lowly before their Guardian: those are the companions of the Garden,

I indeed fear for you the punishment of a painful day."
The court of those who disowned, among his people, said: "We see you only as a human like us, and we see that only those who are, among us, the lowliest, followed you, at first glance.

And it was revealed to Nuh that none of your people will believe anymore, except those who have already believed:

so do not grieve over what they were doing.

Until, when Our command came and the oven began to boil over, We said: "Carry into it, of every kind, two elements of a pair, and your family, except him against whom the saying has already preceded, and those who have believed."

And it sailed with them amid waves like mountains.

He said: "There is no safeguard today against God's command, except for him to whom He shows benevolence."
And the wave intervened between them, and he was among the drowned.

And the water subsided, the matter was decided, and the vessel established itself on al-Judi.
And it was said: "Far removed be the wrongdoing people!"
And Nuh called upon his Guardian and said: "My Guardian, my son is indeed of my family, and Your promise is truth,

So do not ask Me about what you have no knowledge of:

and if You do not forgive me and show me benevolence, I will be among the losers."

and there are communities that We shall let enjoy, then a painful punishment from Us will touch them."

Those are pieces of information about what escapes the senses, which We reveal to you:

you are only inventors.

O my people, I do not ask you for any reward for this:

Will you not then reason?
O my people, ask forgiveness of your Guardian, then turn back to Him: He will send upon you the sky in copious streams, and add strength to your strength; and do not turn your backs as severed."

so scheme against me all together, and grant me no delay.
I indeed entrust myself to God, my Guardian and yours:

My Guardian is upon a straight path.

my Guardian indeed preserves everything."
And when Our command came, We saved Hud and those who had believed with him, by a benevolence from Us, and We saved them from a harsh punishment.
And such were the Aad: they stubbornly rejected the signs of their Guardian, disobeyed His messengers, and followed the command of every obstinate tyrant.
And they were pursued, in the present life, by a curse, and on the Day of Appearance too:

is it not so: the Aad indeed disowned their Guardian.

Far removed be the Aad, the people of Hud!

And to the Thamud, their brother Salih:

he said: "O my people! Obey God: you have no other deity than Him.
It is He who brought you into being from the earth and made you live long therein: so ask His forgiveness, then turn back to Him:

my Guardian is indeed near, and He answers."
They said: "O Salih, you were among us a hope before this; do you forbid us to obey what our ancestors obeyed? We are surely in a troubling doubt about what you call us to."

You would then only increase my loss.

But they hamstrung her. He then said: "Enjoy yourselves in your abode for three days:

that is a promise that will not be belied."
When Our command came, We saved Salih and those who had believed with him, by a benevolence from Us, and from the disgrace of that day.

When the alarm had left Ibrahim and the good tidings had come to him, he began to argue with Us about the people of Lut:

O my people, give the measure and the balance faithfully, with equity,
and do not shortchange men in their things, and do not spread disorder on the earth as corrupters.
What remains with God is better for you, if you are believers;
and I am not, over you, a preserver."
They said: "O Shu'ayb, does your Contact command you that we leave what our ancestors obeyed, or that we stop doing with our goods what we will?
You are surely, yourself, the forbearing, the well-advised one!"
He said: "O my people, do you see? If I rely on a clear proof from my Guardian, and He has provided me, from Him, with a fine provision...
And I do not want to contradict you by doing myself what I forbid you:
I only want to make things sound, as much as I can;
and my success rests only with God:
to Him I entrust myself,
and to Him I have recourse.
O my people, let not your rupture with me cause what struck the people of Nuh, or the people of Hud, or the people of Salih, to strike you;
and the people of Lut are not far from you.
And ask forgiveness of your Guardian, then turn back to Him:
my Guardian is indeed Benevolent, Loving."
They said: "O Shu'ayb, we do not understand much of what you say, and we surely see you weak among us; were it not for your kindred, we would have banished you; and you have no power over us."
He said: "O my people, does my kindred then weigh more with you than God, whom you have relegated behind your back?
My Guardian encompasses perfectly what you do.
O my people, act according to your position; I too am acting:
you will soon know to whom a punishment will come that disgraces him, and who is a liar.
And so watch:
I indeed watch with you."
And when Our command came, We saved Shu'ayb and those who had believed with him, by a benevolence from Us.
And the Cry seized those who had done wrong, so that they found themselves, in their abodes, lying, still, as if they had never dwelt there.
Far removed be Madyan, as the Thamud were removed!
We have indeed sent Moussa with Our signs and manifest authority, to Fir'awn and his court; but they followed the command of Fir'awn,
and the command of Fir'awn was not well-advised.
He will advance at the head of his people on the Day of Appearance, and bring them to arrive at the Fire:
what a detestable place of arrival to arrive at!
And they were pursued, here, by a curse, and on the Day of Appearance too:
what a detestable gift is that which was made to them!
Those are pieces of information about the cities which We relate to you: some of them remain standing, and others are mown down.
And We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves:
their deities, which they invoked besides God, availed them nothing when your Guardian's command came,
and they only increased their perdition.
Such is the seizure of your Guardian, when He seizes the cities while they are doing wrong:
His seizure is indeed painful, severe.
There is surely in that a sign for whoever fears the punishment of the last life:
that is a day on which mankind will be brought together,
and that is a witnessed day.
And We adjourn it only until a numbered term.
The day it comes, no Self will speak without His permission:
there will then be the wretched and the happy.
As for those who will be wretched, they will be in the Fire, wherein they will have rattling and sobbing, wherein they will abide eternally, as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Guardian wills:
your Guardian is ever doing what He wants.
And as for those who will be happy, they will be in the Garden, wherein they will abide eternally, as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Guardian wills:
an endowment that will never be interrupted.
So do not contend about what those people obey:
they obey only as their ancestors obeyed before.
And We shall surely repay them faithfully their portion, undiminished.
We have indeed given Moussa the Scripture, and there was divergence about it;
and had it not been for a word that preceded from your Guardian, it would have been decided between them;
and they are surely, about it, in a troubling doubt.
And to each, your Guardian will surely faithfully repay their works:
He is Intimately Acquainted with what they do.
So stand straight, as you have been commanded, and those who have turned back with you, and do not exceed the measure:
He is indeed All-Seeing of what you do.
And do not lean upon those who have done wrong, or the Fire would touch you,
and you would have, besides God, no ally,
then you would not be helped.
And maintain the Contact at the two ends of the day, and at close moments of the night:
good deeds dispel bad ones:
that is a reminder for those who remember.
And be patient,
for God does not let the reward of those who do good dissipate.
Were there not, among the generations before you, possessors of a remnant who forbade corruption on earth, except a few among those We saved?
And those who did wrong followed the affluence they were given, and became severed.
And it is not in the nature of your Guardian to annihilate the cities wrongfully, while their inhabitants make things sound.
And had your Guardian willed, He would have made mankind a single community;
but they do not cease to differ, except those to whom your Guardian shows benevolence,
and it is for this that He created them.
And the word of your Guardian has been completed: "I will surely fill Jahannam with the Occulted and humans, all together."
And all that We relate to you of the pieces of information about the messengers is that by which We make your Conscience firm;
and there has come to you, in this, the truth, an admonition, and a reminder for the believers.
And say to those who do not believe: "Act according to your position; we act; and wait: we too are indeed waiting."
And to God belongs what escapes the senses in the heavens and on the earth,
and to Him the whole matter returns:
so obey Him, and entrust yourself to Him:
and your Guardian is not heedless of what you do.
