Sura 24 · 64 verses

24:1

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. This is a surah which We have sent down and which We have made obligatory, and in which We have sent down clear signs, perhaps you will remember.

24:2

The fornicatress and the fornicator, inflict on each of them a hundred strokes on the skin,

and let no kindness for them seize you in the Law of God, if you believe in God and the Last Day;

24:2

and let a group of believers witness their punishment.

The fornicator takes as wife only a fornicatress or an associator,

and the fornicatress, only a fornicator or an associator takes her as wife;

and that is prohibited to the believers.

24:4

And those who accuse women protected by the marital bond, then do not bring four witnesses, inflict on them eighty strokes on the skin,

24:5

and never accept their testimony again — those are the oversteppers, except those who turned back after that and became sound, for God is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

And those who accuse their spouses, having no witnesses except themselves, the testimony of one of them shall be to testify four times by God that he is surely among the veracious, and a fifth time, that the curse of God be upon him if he is among the liars.

And the punishment will be averted from her if she testifies four times by God that he is surely among the liars, and a fifth time, that the anger of God be upon her if he is among the veracious.

24:10

And were it not for the favor of God upon you and His benevolence, and that God is the Ever-Accepter of repentance, Wise…

24:11

Those who came with the distortion are indeed a group from among you; do not think it is an ill for you,

24:11

no, it is a good for you.

To each person among them, what they have earned of transgression,

and he among them who took the greatest part of it will have an immense punishment.

24:12

If only, upon hearing it, the believing men and women had presumed good of themselves, and had said: "This is a manifest distortion!"

If only they had brought four witnesses concerning it!

Since they did not bring the witnesses, those are, in the sight of God, the liars.

24:14–15

And were it not for the favor of God upon you and His benevolence, in the present life and the last life, an immense punishment would have touched you for what you indulged in, when you received it with your tongues and said with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge, deeming it trivial while it is, in the sight of God, immense.

And if only, upon hearing it, you had said: "It is not for us to speak of this — glory be to You, this is an immense slander!"

God exhorts you never to repeat the like of it, if you are believers.

And God makes the signs clear to you,

and God is All-Knowing, Wise.

Those who love that indecency should spread among those who believe will indeed have a painful punishment, in the present life and the last life,

and God knows,

and you do not know.

24:20

And were it not for the favor of God upon you and His benevolence, and that God is full of kindness, Benevolent…

24:21

O you who have believed! Do not follow the footsteps of the Diverter;

24:21

and whoever follows the footsteps of the Diverter — he indeed commands indecency and what is disavowed.

24:21

And were it not for the favor of God upon you and His benevolence, not one of you would ever have been purified,

but God purifies whom He wills,

and God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

24:22

And let not those among you who have favor and ampleness swear not to give to their relatives, the destitute, and those who emigrated in the way of God,

24:22

and let them rather overlook and turn the page.

24:22

Would you not love for God to forgive you?

And God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

24:23–24

Those who accuse women protected by the marital bond, unwitting, believing, are indeed cursed in the present life and the last life, and they will have an immense punishment, on the day when their tongues, their hands, and their feet will testify against them for what they used to do.

That day, God will faithfully repay them their just due,

and they will know that God is the manifest Truth.

24:26

The vile for the vile, and the vile for the vile;

24:26

and the wholesome for the wholesome, and the wholesome for the wholesome.

24:26

Those are made quit of what is said;

they have forgiveness and a generous provision.

24:27

O you who have believed! Do not enter houses other than your own until you have made yourselves known and greeted their occupants —

that is better for you, perhaps you will remember.

24:28

If you find no one therein, do not enter until you are given permission;

24:28

and if you are told: "Return," then return — it is purer for you.

And God is All-Knowing of what you do.

No blame upon you for entering uninhabited houses in which there is a use for you.

And God knows what you make appear and what you withhold.

24:30

Say to the believing men to cast down their sights and preserve their private parts — that is purer for them.

God is indeed Intimately Acquainted with what they do.

24:31

And say to the believing women to cast down their sights and preserve their private parts,

24:31

and not to make appear that which, in them, arouses desire, except what of it is uncovered,

24:31

and let them multiply their covering cloth over the neckline of their chest,

24:31

and let them not make appear what, in them, arouses desire, except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husbands' fathers, or their sons, or their husbands' sons, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or the women of their circle, or those bound by oath, or male attendants devoid of desire, or children to whom women's private matters are not yet uncovered.

24:31

And let them not multiply their steps so as to make known what they hide of what arouses desire in them.

24:31

And turn all together to God, O believers, perhaps you will succeed.

And marry the unmarried among you, as well as those who are sound among your male and female obedient ones.

If they are poor, God will enrich them from His favor.

And God is Vast, All-Knowing.

And let those who do not find marriage refrain, until God enriches them from His favor.

24:33

And those, among those bound by oath, who seek the written deed of marriage, draw up that deed with them if you know good in them,

and give them from the goods of God which He has given you.

24:33

And do not compel your young women to prostitution, if they wish to be protected, seeking merely the goods of the present life.

24:33

And whoever compels them — after their compulsion, God is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

We have sent down to you clear signs, an example from those who passed before you, and an admonition for those who guard themselves.

God is the Light of the heavens and the earth.

The example of His Light is like a niche wherein is a lamp.

The lamp is in a glass.

24:35

The glass is like a brilliant heavenly body, kindled from a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil is about to glow forth even without fire touching it.

Light upon light.

God guides to His Light whom He wills,

and God multiplies examples for mankind,

and God is All-Knowing of all things.

In houses whose elevation God has authorized, and in which His name is remembered — there glorify Him, morning and evening, men whom neither trade nor selling distracts from the remembrance of God, the maintaining of the Contact, and the giving of pure liberality,

fearing a day when the cores and the sights will capsize, so that God may recompense them according to the most beautiful of what they have done, and give them more of His favor.

And God provides for whom He wills, without reckoning.

24:39

And those who disown, their works are like a mirage in a desert plain, which the thirsty one takes for water, until, when he comes to it, he finds nothing, but he finds God there, who faithfully squares his account.

And God is swift in reckoning.

24:40

Or like darknesses on a deep, surging sea: a wave covers it, above which is another wave, above which is a cloud —

darknesses, one above another:

24:40

when he puts out his hand, he can hardly see it.

24:40

And he to whom God grants no light has no light.

24:41

Have you not seen that God — He is glorified by those in the heavens and on the earth, and the birds aligning their wings?

24:41

Each one knows its Contact and its glorification,

and God is All-Knowing of what they do.

And to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth,

and to God is the destination.

24:43

Have you not seen that God makes the clouds glide, then joins them together, then makes them into a mass, and you see the shower come out from within it?

24:43

And He sends down from the sky, from mountains therein, hail, with which He strikes whom He wills, and which He turns away from whom He wills;

24:43

the flash of its lightning is about to take away the sight.

God alternates the night and the day.

There is surely a lesson in that for the possessors of sight.

24:45

And God created every living being from water.

Among them is one that walks on its belly,

24:45

and among them is one that walks on two feet,

24:45

and among them is one that walks on four.

24:45

God creates what He wills,

God is indeed capable of all things.

We have sent down clear signs,

and God guides whom He wills to a straight path.

24:47

And they say: "We believe in God and in the messenger, and we defer" — then a fraction among them turns its back after that;

and these are not believers.

24:48

And when they are called to God and His messenger so that he may judge between them, there is a fraction among them that turns away.

24:49

But if the right is on their side, they come to him in full compliance.

24:50

Is there a sickness in their cores, or do they doubt, or do they fear that God and His messenger will lean against them?

24:50

No, it is they who are the wrongdoers.

24:51

The only saying of the believers, when they are called to God and His messenger so that he may judge between them, is to say: "We have heard and we have deferred."

And those are the ones who succeed.

And whoever defers to God and His messenger, dreads God and guards himself toward Him — those are the triumphant.

And they swore by God, with the utmost strength of their oaths, that if you ordered them, they would surely go forth.

Say: "Do not swear;

a recognized deference!

God is indeed Intimately Acquainted with what you do."

Say: "Defer to God and defer to the messenger;

24:54

but if you turn your backs, upon him rests only what he has been made to carry, and upon you rests only what you have been made to carry.

And if you defer to him, you will let yourselves be guided.

24:54

And only the clear transmission is incumbent upon the messenger."

24:55

And God has promised those among you who believe and do sound deeds that He will surely make them successors on the earth, as He made successors those before them, that He will surely establish firmly for them their Law which He has approved for them, and that He will surely change their state, after their fear, into security.

24:55

They obey Me without associating anything with Me.

And whoever disowns after that — those are the oversteppers.

24:56

And maintain the Contact, and give pure liberality,

and defer to the messenger, perhaps benevolence will be shown to you.

Do not ever think that those who disown can render Him powerless on the earth;

and their resort is the Fire,

and what an evil destination!

24:58

O you who have believed! Let those bound by oath and those among you who have not yet reached the age of composure ask your permission at three times: before the Contact of dawn, when you lay aside your clothes at midday, and after the Contact of evening —

24:58

three times of privacy for you.

No blame, neither upon you nor upon them, outside these times,

24:58

being visitors among you,

one with another.

Thus does God make the signs clear to you,

and God is All-Knowing, Wise.

24:59

And when the children among you reach the age of composure, let them ask permission as those before them asked permission.

Thus does God make His signs clear to you,

and God is All-Knowing, Wise.

24:60

And the elderly women, among women, who no longer hope for marriage, no blame upon them for laying aside their clothes, without ostentatiously displaying what, in them, arouses desire;

but that they refrain is better for them.

And God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

24:61

There is no discomfort for the blind, nor discomfort for the lame, nor discomfort for the sick, nor for yourselves, in eating in your own houses, or the houses of your fathers, or the houses of your mothers, or the houses of your brothers, or the houses of your sisters, or the houses of your paternal uncles, or the houses of your paternal aunts, or the houses of your maternal uncles, or the houses of your maternal aunts, or in what you hold the keys of, or at your friend's.

24:61

No blame upon you for eating together or separately.

24:61

And when you enter houses, greet one another with a greeting from God, blessed and wholesome.

Thus does God make the signs clear to you, perhaps you will reason.

The believers are only those who believe in God and His messenger, and who, when they are with him for a common matter, do not leave until they have asked his permission.

Those who ask your permission, those are indeed the ones who believe in God and His messenger.

And when they ask your permission for some matter concerning them, grant it to whom you will among them, and ask God's forgiveness for them.

God is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.

Do not consider the call of the messenger among yourselves as the call of one of you to another.

God will surely distinguish those among you who slip away furtively.

Let those who oppose his order beware lest a trial strike them, or a painful punishment strike them.

Is it not so: to God belongs what is in the heavens and on the earth.

He will surely know the state you are in,

and the day when they are returned to Him, He will inform them of what they did.

And God is All-Knowing of all things.
