Sura 31 · 34 verses

31:1

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Mim.

31:2–4

These are the signs of the Scripture full of wisdom, a guidance and benevolence for those who do good, those who maintain the Contact and give pure liberality, and who, as for the last life, are certain of it.

Those are upon guidance from their Guardian,

and those are the ones who succeed.

31:6

And among mankind is he who buys distracting discourse, to lead astray from the way of God without knowledge, and who takes it in mockery;

those are the ones who will have a degrading punishment.

31:7

And when Our signs are recited to him, he turns his back, growing proud, as though he had not heard them, as though there were deafness in his ears:

so give him news of a painful punishment.

Those who believed and did sound deeds will indeed have the gardens of bliss, abiding therein eternally —

a promise of God, in truth;

and He is the All-Powerful, the Wise.

31:10

He created the heavens without pillars

31:10

that you can see;

31:10

and He cast on the earth firm anchors, lest it sway with you, and He spread upon it every kind of living being;

and We sent down water from the sky, and caused every generous pair to grow in it.

This is God's creation:

so show Me what those besides Him have created.

The wrongdoers are rather in manifest error.

31:12

And We certainly gave Luqman wisdom: "Be grateful to God";

31:12

and whoever acknowledges does so only for himself,

31:12

and whoever disowns — God is indeed Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.

31:13

And when Luqman said to his son, while exhorting him, "O my little one, do not associate with God;

31:13

association is surely an immense wrong."

31:14

And We enjoined upon the human being concerning his parents —

his mother carried him, frailty upon frailty,

31:14

and his weaning is completed within the two years that follow — :

31:14

"Be grateful to Me and to your parents;

to Me is the destination."

31:15

But if they strive against you to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not defer to them;

31:15

but accompany them in the present life in a recognized manner,

and follow the way of one who has recourse to Me;

then to Me will be your return, and I will then inform you of what you used to do.

31:16

"O my little one, if it should be the weight of a mustard seed, and should be in a rock, or in the heavens, or in the earth, God will bring it forth,

31:16

God is Subtle, Intimately Acquainted.

31:17

O my little one, maintain the Contact,

31:17

and order what is recognized,

31:17

and forbid what is disavowed,

31:17

and be patient with what strikes you:

31:17

that is among the matters requiring resolve.

31:18

And do not turn your cheek away from men,

31:18

and do not walk upon the earth strutting:

God does not love any arrogant boaster.

31:19

And be moderate in your pace,

31:19

and hush your voice:

31:19

for the most disavowed of voices is surely the voice of donkeys."

31:20

Have you not seen that God has subjected to you what is in the heavens and what is on the earth, and has lavished His favors upon you, uncovered and hidden?

31:20

And among mankind is he who argues about God without knowledge, without guidance, and without an illuminating Scripture.

And when it is said to them, "Follow what God has sent down,"

they say, "We rather follow what we found our ancestors upon."

31:21

What, even if the Diverter was calling them to the punishment of the Inferno?

31:22

And whoever renders his direction true to God alone, while doing good, has held firmly to the surest handhold;

and to God is the outcome of all matters.

31:23

And whoever disowns, let not his disowning grieve you:

to Us is their return, and We will then inform them of what they did —

God is indeed All-Knowing of what the chests contain.

We grant them a brief enjoyment, then We will press them hard toward a harsh punishment.

And if you ask them who created the heavens and the earth, they will surely say: "God";

say: "Praise be to God!"

But most of them do not know.

To God belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth;

God is the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy.

31:27

And if all the trees on the earth were pens, and the sea were reinforced, after it, by seven seas, the words of God would not be exhausted:

God is indeed All-Powerful, Wise.

31:28

Your creation and your raising are but as a single Self;

God is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.

Have you not seen that God makes the night penetrate into the day, and makes the day penetrate into the night, and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running to an appointed term, and that God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do?

31:30

That is because God is the Truth, and what you invoke besides Him is falsehood, and because God is the Most High, the Great.

Have you not seen that the vessels sail on the sea by the blessing of God, that He may show you some of His signs?

31:31

There are surely in that signs for every very patient, very grateful one.

31:32

And when a wave covers them like canopies, they call upon God, devoting the Law exclusively to Him;

31:32

but when He saves them to dry land, some of them remain moderate;

and none stubbornly rejects Our signs except every perfidious, great disowner.

31:33

O mankind, guard yourselves toward your Guardian, and dread a day when no parent will avail his child, nor any child avail his parent at all.

God's promise is indeed truth:

so do not let the present life delude you,

and do not let the great deluder delude you about God.

31:34

God indeed has knowledge of the Hour,

31:34

and sends down the saving rain,

31:34

and knows what is in the wombs;

31:34

and no Self has any idea what it will earn tomorrow,

31:34

and no Self has any idea in what land it will die;

God is indeed All-Knowing, Intimately Acquainted.
